What is the Castanyada?

The “Castanyada” it is a popular festival in Catalonia that it's celebrated on All Saints' Day.

Like Halloween, its origins are in an ancient ritual festival of the dead.

The “castanyera”The “castanyera” is

the figure with which is depicted this festival.

She is an old woman wearing old clothes that sells hot toasted chestnuts wrapped in newspaper, on the street.

Traditional foods of this celebration

Chestnuts (they are sold toasted by street vendors)

Sweet potatoes (they are cooked on oven and they are eaten with cinnamon or sugar)

Panellets (small round cakes, made mainly of marzipan)
