La Feria Churches Partner With Schools To Serve Local Children
Methodist & Presbyterian churches work together on Serve Our Schools project
LA FERIA – On aug. 30, two La Feria churches worked together to make improvements to Sam Houston elementary School. Volunteers from First United Method-ist Church of La Feria and new Hope Presbyterian Church of La Feria began constructing steps, cork display strips and coat racks to be installed in the elementary school.
This annual service project is part of the Serve Our Schools program, launched in august 2012 by the Method-ist church. The Sam Houston elementary School improve-ment project will be completed and presented Sept. 20.
The church and student volunteers who were not build-ing that day began collecting coats, shoes, socks, and un-derwear to be distributed to needy children at all four La Feria elementary schools. They also prepared the weekend

La Feria Leaps PastDonna Chiefs with
35–13 VictoryStory by Jaime Acuna
The La Feria Lions didn’t let the rain spoil their home opener at Lion Stadium as they cruised to a 35–13 win over the Donna north Chiefs.
The Lion offense was on fire early in the game as quarterback, Isaac Galpin scored the first touchdown of the game on a 2 yard run. Kicker, Joel nava then added the extra point to put the Lions up 7–0 in the first quarter.
Galpin then hit Lion wide receiver Brandon Perez on a long 53-yard strike to put the Lions up two scores. The fury continued as junior running back, Rusbel Gonzalez scored two rushing touchdowns and senior wide receiver angel Carrera scored another late in the game.
The Lion defense also had a great game on the other side of the ball. They amassed a total of six sacks and forced the Chiefs quarterback to throw two interceptions.
Senior linebacker, Sergio Contreras led the way with 2 sacks and 11 total tackles. Randy Cantu and Ozzie Cisneros each had an interception as the Lion defense held onto a shutout until late in the game when the game was already all but over.
Overall, the Lions played great and have their hopes high on doing well all season long and making a deep run in the playoffs.
They will now travel to Santa Rosa on Friday, September 5th to face the Warriors in the annual Battle of 506.
It’s a rivalry game, and both teams will be ready to go to war in this heated confron-tation that will earn the winner bragging rights for the entire year.
We wish the Lions the best of luck this season ... Go Lions!

RE-CERTIFIED KNEE AND HIP SURGERY CENTER HELPS MANY VALLEY PATIENTS
TO WALK AGAIN WITHOUT PAINHARLINGEN – Knee and
hip replacement surgery is performed at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen for patients who have pain, discomfort, or loss of function because of arthritis, accidents, or other causes.
Arthritis can eventually cause a joint to deteriorate or wear out to the point that partial or total replacement is necessary. The replacement surgery is designed to help restore the patient’s ability to walk and relieve pain.
Recently, Valley Baptist was re-certified with a “Gold Seal of Approval™” specifically for knee and hip replacement su rge r ie s by a na t iona l accrediting organization for healthcare organizations, the Joint Commission. In 2 011 , t h e a c c r e d i t i n g
organization, which is based in Illinois. granted Valley Baptist the first-ever specialty certification in the Valley for knee and hip replacement.
Valley Baptist is one of the most experienced hospitals in Texas in performing joint replacement surgeries. In fact, Dr. Rick Bassett, Orthopedic Surgeon and Medical Director of Valley Baptist-Harlingen’s Orthopedics / Joint Replacement Program, has performed more than 12,000 knee replacement and 3,000 hip replacement surgeries at Valley Baptist. Last year, 1,061 joint replacement surgeries were performed at Valley Baptist.
Valley Baptist’s orthopedics department follows national standards to reduce the length of stay and risk of infections for patients hospitalized after orthopedic surgery. For example, patients are given antibiotics at optimum times to reduce the chance of infection. In addition, Valley Baptist’s orthopedic surgery rooms are equipped with a sterile air flow system which reduces infections.
Following joint replacement surgery, patients recover on a specially-equipped orthopedics floor, with 39 large, private rooms, staffed by nurses experienced at caring for joint replacement patients.
Maureen Rattray, RN, Nurse Director for the Valley Baptist’s orthopedics floor, said the Joint Commission’s “Gold Seal of Approval” program shows that Valley Baptist is using the most up-to-date care, by following scientifically-proven “evidence-based” guidelines to care for hip and knee patients.
For more information on knee, hip and other joint replacement procedures, please consult your physician and visit www.ValleyBaptist.net.
Dr. Rick Bassett, Orthopedic Surgeon, has performed more than 12,000 knee replacement and 3,000 hip replacement surgeries for Valley residents and visitors at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.

Chaha is little big personalityCHACHA is a mighty little personality. This girl stands only a foot tall and has gorgeous coloring. Besides being a pint-sized beauty, she is a social gal that loves people and other happy dogs. While small enough to be an easy apartment or RV pet, she is sturdy enough to thrive in a home with children. Chacha is available for adoption with application and fee, which includes vac-cinations, spay and microchip ID.
here’s my cute new friend KiKitaKIKITA is a young lady that takes a while to make friends. Though we think she is well worth the effort. With beautifully striped lynx point coloring and bright blue eyes, she’s an absolute stunner. Kikita is under a year old and can adjust to a new home with some patience and love. She is litter trained, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. And she is available for adoption with application. If you’d like to meet her, stop by HSH this afternoon.

Proposition Number 1 (SJR 1)
SJR 1 would authorize the trans-fer of certain money from the general revenue fund to the state highway fund and the economic stabilization fund. Money trans-ferred to the state highway fund may be used solely for the con-struction, maintenance and acqui-sition of rights-of-way for public roadways.
The proposed amendment will

Tony Baczewski has been in the business of helping people keep their cars and trucks clean--inside and outside--since 1987. Many changes and advancements have taken place over the years so that people who care about their “pride and joy” have many more op-tions available than ever before.
LA FERIA NEWS met with Tony at his Central Park car wash operation in Harlingen to learn more about how his business has changed.
He related that after his graduation from Harlingen High School in 1975, he went to work in his family’s Overhead Door Company business. His work covered everything from installing doors in houses to designing and installing huge doors in industrial and commercial buildings. “Everyday was a different challenge,” he said. “It was a great job.:
“When the opportunity came to buy property on Expressway 77 near the
Mall and build my own self-service car wash, I jumped at it,” he recalls. “It was centrally located, so I figured Central Park Car Wash would be a good name.”
Baczewski recalled that the Mall had only been in existence for a few years, and he was “all by my lone-some out there” until the area started growing. “Now, I’m surrounded by big time businesses like H.E.B, the Cinema, hotels and restau-rants--Yes, it was a good investment.”
In 1987 Tony hired a com-pany out of Houston to build him a self-service 3-bay car wash with 1 automatic drive-through. “I’ve since added another bay and an 8-bay vacuum area and with a car beauty parlor.“ he said. “People can drive away with a squeaky-clean, waxed car, inside and out, with a fragrance of their choice. I tell everyone that a ‘clean car is a happy car.’”
In the beginning, Central Park Car Wash offered an
automatic washing machine with the standard, huge ro-tating brush system. “How-ever,” he says, “we up-grad-ed to the latest system called the Water Wizard ‘touchless’ automatic car wash method. It does a fabulous job and eliminates the chance of damage to mirrors, paint and antennas.”
“We here at Central Park Car Wash plan to provide economical, full-service deluxe wash jobs with all the bells and whistles,“ he said. “We’re open 7 days a week with an attendant on duty from 8 a.m. till 5:00 p.m each day--My lady cus-tomers feel safer with a male attendant on duty.“
Tony has two sons: Tyler is a 2008 South Harlingen High School graduate and works with his father in the car wash business. Cody is a North Texas State Univer-sity graduate and works with the city of Weslaco.
About plans for the future, he said, “We’re happy where we are. We don’t have room for much expansion. And,
that is fine: I plan to keep up my equipment and not
disappoint my customers.” You can find Tony at his
2008 West Tyler address in Harlingen ‘most anytime.

ON THEFARMTony Schaub cultivates
culture with show at the Harlingen Arts and
Heritage MuseumVisitors to the latest art ex-
hibition at The Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum on the evening of Thursday, August 28th were greeted with the strains of square dance music as they browsed through the latest work of local artist Tony Schaub. His latest show - On the Farm - Schaub pays hom-age to the life of an agricultural community, embellished with his trademark use of word play, mixed media and his impec-cable pop art sensibility.
A native of Pittsburgh, Penn-sylvania, Schaub drew and painted as a young child. At the age of twelve, he was se-lected to attend the Carnegie Institute Summer Art Program. The next year, Tony won the Pennsylvania Scholastic Art Gold Key for his tempera/goache painting, World Series Celebration.
After serving four years in the Air Force, Schaub moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, where he continued to develop his artistic skills. His work was ex-hibited in private, commercial, and public collections. After winning an art competition in Idaho he traded a painting for a 1940 Chrysler New Yorker and hit the road, spending the winter at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. En route back to Sun Valley, Tony had car trouble in Houston, showed his portfolio to a local gallery and a Texas Artist was born.
In the late ‘70s he visited South Padre Island to paint the walls of a friend’s new restaurant - Blackbeard’s. He also painted works for the SPI
Convention Center and Louis Backyard. By 2006, Schaub and his wife had moved per-manently to Harlingen where he maintains a studio on Jack-son St. today.
Schaub is an undisputed master of modern pop. His tongue-in-cheek approach to visual art often combines word play and interesting jux-tapositions to help convey his messages but leaving enough room for the viewer to make their own observations.
For On the Farm, Schaub worked tirelessly for several months in preparation for his first show at the museum in seven years.
“I didn’t cut any corners with this one, and I’m giving it my best shot.” Schaub said.
What sets Schaub apar t from his contemporaries in the visual arts is that he doesn’t limit himself to producing only paintings, but instead will use assemblage, collage, paint-ing, found object sculpture and installation techniques to make each work unique and unforgettable.
One highlight f rom his reception for On the Farm included an installation rec-reating Grant Wood’s famous painting “American Gothic” using live models as surrogates for Wood’s sister and dentist, the original models for the iconic work standing in front of a canvas recreation of the farmhouse.
Another piece, entitled sim-ply “Square Dancing Instruc-tions”, features a lenticular image of a hamster in square
dance garb affixed to a canvas with painted and collage ele-ments.
One piece, “Look Before You Leap”, combines found objects with photography to create a piece that literally breaks out of the picture plane, even if it doesn’t break any new intellectual ground.
The strength of Schaub’s work is how it engages viewers in a whimsical, colorful way, never demanding too much in the way of contemplation from the viewer, but instead enter-taining and delighting, allow-ing the work to firmly ensconce itself in their memory.
However, much like Andy Warhol’s soup can silkscreen canvases, sometimes a painting of a tabasco sauce bottle is just a painting of a tabasco sauce bottle. Interspersed among the visual puns and playful mash-ups of Schaub’s latest oeuvre you’ll find just that unironi-cally sharing wall space with a large painting of a chili pepper sporting Army stripes entitled “Sergeant Pepper”.
On the Farm will be on display until November 9th. The
Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum is located at 2425
Boxwood Street in Harlingen. For more information please call
