¡Bienvenidos! Welcome! El buen teatro no tiene tiempo porque se trata de la condición humana. Han pasado

cuatro décadas desde que la dictadura pampera en Argentina y sin embargo el

autoritarismo está de nuevo en aumento en Los Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo.

Decidimos traer de vuelta esta exitosa obra para nuestro 20vo Aniversario porque sigue

siendo muy relevante hoy en día. La opresión política es tan antigua como la humanidad.

Lo mismo ocurre con la imaginación. Y es precisamente en momentos como estos que

necesitamos de nuestra imaginación para ayudarnos a lidiar con el mundo que nos rodea.

Es también en momentos como estos cuando los artistas deben hablar a través de su arte

para hacer sonar las sirenas utilizando el contexto de la historia y la humanidad.

El dramaturgo Arístides Vargas dirigió nuestra producción, siendo su única obra con

actores físicamente restringidos a sillas. Esta aclamada producción ganó el Premio como

Producción del Año del semanario LA Weekly en el 2011 y ha viajado a 5 países con más

de 100 representaciones. Estamos encantados de compartirla con ustedes y de que estén

aquí para celebrar nuestro 20vo aniversario con nosotros. Good theatre is timeless because it is about the human condition. It’s been four

decades since the Pampas dictatorship in Argentina, and yet authoritarianism is

again on the rise, in the U.S. and across the globe. We chose to bring this hit show

back for our 20th Anniversary because it is still so relevant today. Political

oppression is as old as mankind. So is imagination. And it is precisely at times

like these that we need our imaginations to help us cope with the world around

us. It is also at times like these when artists must speak out, through their art, to

sound the siren calls using the context of history and humanity.

Playwright Arístides Vargas directed our production and his is the only version

to feature the actors physically restricted to chairs. This acclaimed show won LA

Weekly’s Production of the Year Award in 2011 and has toured to 5 countries

with over 100 performances. We’re thrilled to be sharing it with you and that

you’re here to celebrate our 20th Anniversary with us.

SOBRE LA OBRA La Razón Blindada está basada en la novela clásica El Quijote de Miguel

de Cervantes, La verdadera historia de Sancho Panza de Franz Kafka y

en los testimonios de Chicho Vargas y otros presos políticos en la cárcel de

Rawson durante la dictadura argentina. En la obra, dos prisioneros

políticos, oprimidos por abusos físicos y emocionales, encuentran consuelo

al reunirse todos los domingos al atardecer para contarse la historia de

Don Quijote y Sancho Panza. Su narración se desentraña en medio de las

limitaciones extremas impuestas por su condición de presos en una prisión

de máxima seguridad. Esta es alimentada por la necesidad vital de contarle

a los demás una historia que podría salvarlos, que podría transportarlos a

una aventura humana situada en el reino de la imaginación, donde la

infortunio y el miedo no pueden llegar a ellos; donde el dolor más intenso

puede ser mitigado por el acto de imaginar una realidad diferente.

ABOUT THE PLAY

La Razón Blindada is based on the classic novel El Quijote by Miguel

de Cervantes, Franz Kafka's The Truth about Sancho Panza, and

testimonies by Chicho Vargas and other political prisoners held in

the 1970's at the Rawson Prison during Argentina's dictatorship. In

the play, two political prisoners, oppressed by physical and

emotional abuse, find solace in meeting every Sunday at dusk to

tell the story of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Their storytelling

unravels amidst the extreme limitations imposed by their condition

as inmates in a maximum security prison. It is fueled by the vital

need to tell each other a story that could save them, that could

transport them to a human adventure situated in the realm of

imagination, where hardship and fear can't reach them, where the

most intense pain can be mitigated by the act of imagining a

different reality.

BIOGRAPHIES/ BIOGRAFIAS

Jesús Castaños-Chima (De La Mancha) is a

former member of the Autonomous National

University of México (UNAM) Theater Company.

He started his acting career in Culiacán, Sinaloa,

México with DIFOCUR Theater Group, directed

by Jorge Cázarez and the Theater Workshop of

the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (TATUAS),

directed by Oscar Liera. During his 35 year career, he’s worked in

plays, TV and films in Mexico and The United States. He has also

participated in many international theater festivals. He was an

Acting workshop coordinator for the International Latino Theater

Festival of Los Angeles (FITLA) and Assistant Curator at Meet Me

at Metro Fest. He is the Director of Latino Theatre Programs at 24th

STreet Theatre, where he has directed La Infamia, El Jardín de los

Reyes, El Ogrito (The Ogreling, Los Angeles Times Critic’s Choice),

and La Víspera, among others. He also appeared in the acclaimed

film Quinceañera (Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at

SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2006), as "Ernesto Chávez".

Jesús Castaños-Chima (De La Mancha) es un ex miembro de la

Compaíña de teatro de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

(UNAM) . Comenzó su carrera en Culiacán, Sinaloa, México con el grupo

de teatro de DIFOCUR, dirigido por Jorge Cázarez y posteriormente en el

Taller de teatro de la Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa (TATUAS),

dirigida por Oscar Liera. Durante sus 35 años de carrera, ha trabajado en

obras de teatro, TV y películas tanto en México como en Los Estados

Unidos. También ha participado en numerosos festivales internacionales

de teatro. Trabajó como Coordinador de los talleres de actuación del

Festival Internacional de Teatro Latino de Los Angeles (FITLA) y como

Curador asistente en el Festival Meet Me @ Metro. En la actualidad,

trabaja como director del Programa de teatro latino del Teatro 24. Su

trabajo como director incluye: La Infamia, El Jardín de los Reyes, El

Ogrito (selección de los críticos del periódico LA Times), y La Víspera,

entre otros. También participó en la aclamada película Quinceañera

(Gran premio del jurado y Premio del público en el Festival de cine

SUNDANCE 2006), como "Ernesto Chavez".

Tony Durán (Panza) is a Mexican actor and

trainer of Movement for the Actor. He attended

the XXXI Workshop of the International School of

Theatre of Latin America and the Caribbean

(EITALC); He also participated in the workshops

presented by FITLA (International Latino Theatre

Festival of Los Angeles), where he has been

trained in theatre, dance, and performance art from directors

hailing from international art collectives. He performed in the solo

works, El Hombre de las Suelas de Viento de Arthur Rimbaud and El

Infame, based in the play La Infamia by Oscar Liera, both directed by

Jorge Folgueira. He participated in Fábula de un País de Cera by Joel

Cano, with Mexicali a Secas Company from Mexico and directed by

Angel Norzagaray. He has performed on stages all over the United

States. Among his latest works are: The Traveling Towers and

Tsunami created by Jesus Castaños Chima and La Víspera by Victor

Vazquez, all directed by Chima; and Walking the Tightrope by Mike

Kenny, directed by Debbie Devine. He is currently in rehearsals for

Take this Waltz, a work in progress directed by Elia K. Schneider

and in the new 24th STreet Theatre production, ICE by Leon

Martell, directed by Debbie Devine.

Tony Durán (Panza) es un actor mexicano y entrenador de Movimiento

para el Actor. Asistió al XXXI Taller de la Escuela Internacional de Teatro

de América Latina y el Caribe (EITALC) y a los talleres internacionales

del Festival Internacional de Teatro Latino de Los Angeles (FITLA),

recibiendo entrenamiento en teatro, danza y el arte del performance con

directores de importantes agrupaciones del arte escénico internacional.

Trabajó en los unipersonales El Hombre de las Suelas de Viento de

Arthur Rimbaud y El Infame, basado en la obra La Infamia de Oscar

Liera, ambos dirigidos por Jorge Folgueira. También colaboró como actor

con la compañía Mexicali A Secas de México, en la obra Fábula de un

País de Cera de Joel Cano y dirigida por Angel Norzagaray. Ha trabajado

en escenarios por casi todo el territorio estadounidense. Entre sus últimos

trabajos se encuentran; The Traveling Towers y Tsunami creadas por

Jesús Castaños Chima, y La Víspera de Víctor Vazquez, dirigidas por

Chima yWalking The Tightrope de Mike Kenny, dirigida por Debbie

Devine. Actualmente, se encuentra ensayando en Take this Waltz, un

trabajo en progreso dirigido por Elia K Schneider y en la nueva producción

Arístides Vargas (Director and Playwright) is considered to be one

of the most dynamic and influential theatre artists to emerge from

South America. Born in Cordoba, Argentina, he began his creative

efforts in the town of Mendoza. At age 20, he was forced into exile

by one of the bloodiest dictatorships in Latin America, and moved

to Ecuador. In 1979, Vargas, along with a group of immigrant

actors, originally from Argentina and Spain, founded Grupo de

Teatro Malayerba in Quito, Ecuador. Grupo Malayerba has since

become one of the most important theatre ensembles in Latin

America. Over the years, Vargas’s theatre works have

expressed his ever-evolving social, political and artistic

dissatisfaction with the status quo in his country. His works, which

have been produced worldwide, include: Jardín de Pulpos, La Edad de

la Ciruela, El Cuco de los Sueños, Las Mariposas Doradas de la Amazonia,

Pluma, Nuestra Señora de las Nubes, El Deseo Más Canalla, La

Muchacha de los Libros Usados, La Exacta Superficie del Roble, El

Zaguan de Aluminio, Tres viejos Mares, Ana, el Mago y el Aprendiz,

Malanoche, De cómo moría y Resucitaba Lázaro, el Lazarillo, Donde el

Viento Hace Buñuelos, Bicicleta Lerux. Vargas is the co-author, with

José Sanchis Sinisterra, of La Cruzada de los Niños de la Calle.

Arístides Vargas es considerado como uno de los más dinámicos e

influyentes artistas de teatro de América del Sur. Nacido en Córdoba,

Argentina, comenzó sus studios teatrales en la ciudad de Mendoza. A los

20 años, se vio obligado al exilio por una de las más sangrientas dictaduras

de América Latina, y se trasladó a Ecuador. En 1979, Vargas, junto con

un grupo de actores inmigrantes, originarios de Argentina y España,

fundó el Grupo de Teatro Malayerba en Quito, Ecuador. Grupo Malayerba

se ha convertido en uno de los más importantes grupos de teatro en

América Latina. Con los años, las obras de teatro de Vargas han expresado

su constante insatisfacción social, política y artística con el status quo de

su país. Sus obras se han representado alrededor del mundo, entre ellas:

Jardín de Pulpos, La Edad de la Ciruela, El Cuco de los Sueños, Las

Mariposas Doradas de la Amazonia, Pluma, Nuestra Señora de las
