Our Orgullo Latino of this month is the professor Elizabeth Valencia-Borgert.

Elizabeth is married to Daniel Borgert and has three boys, Roberto, 22 years old, Diego 20 years old and Carlos, 12 years old

Elizabeth was born in Valencia, Venezuela. She was raised in a very close knit Catholic family. Her father was a physician, her mother stayed home to take care of the family. Elizabeth has 7 siblings.

Her home was always full of relatives, and friends. She attended catholic schools from elementary to secondary school.

Both parents valued catholic education and made sure that all their children went to catholic schools. Both parents were strict but caring. Her mother had always a gentile disposition and lived her faith through her actions. Her father, a man of science, was a person who preferred

a pragmatic approach to life and to raising children: discipline and a good education was important to get ahead in life.

Elizabeth followed the steps of her father, grandfather and great-grandfather in pursuing a higher education, and teaching at a university. The principles of service to others and the moral responsibility to give back to the community have been the inspiration on her professional career as well as her personal life. The same principles have been instilled on her children throughout their lives.

Su casa siempre estaba llena de familiares y amigos. Asistió a escuelas católicas de la escuela primaria a la secundaria.

Ambos padres valoran la educación católica y se aseguró que todos sus hijos fueron a escuelas católicas. Ambos padres eran estrictos pero cariñosos. Su madre tenía siempre una disposición gentil y vivieron su fe a través de sus acciones. Su padre, un hombre de ciencia, era una persona que prefiere un enfoque pragmático a la vida y a criar a los hijos: disciplina y una buena educación era importante para salir adelante en la vida.

Elizabeth siguió los pasos de su padre, abuelo y bisabuelo en perseguir una educación más alta y la enseñanza en la Universidad. Los principios del servicio a los demás y la responsabilidad moral de retribuir a la comunidad han sido la inspiración de su carrera profesional, así como su vida personal. Los mismos principios han sido inculcados a sus hijos a lo largo de sus vidas.

What makes us Americans is our shared commitment to an ideal -– that all of us are created equal, and all of us have the chance to make of our lives what we will. That’s the country our parents and grandparents and generations before them built for us. That’s the tradition we must uphold. That’s the legacy we must leave for those who are yet to come.”

This is just a glimpse of what President Obama said November 20, 2014 during the announcement of one of the most important executive orders he has issued during his presidency in an effort to move the nation forward on fixing our broken immigration system.

During his fifteen minute address to the nation the evening of November 20, 2014, President Obama reminded people that undocumented immigrants are “our neighbors, our classmates, our friends –- they did not come here in search of a free ride or an easy life. They came to work, and study, and serve in our military, and above all, contribute to America’s success.”

While many would criticize and question the authority of his actions,

“Queridos compatriotas, nosotros somos y siempre seremos una nación de inmigrantes. Nosotros fuimos extranjeros, también. Y si nuestros antepasados eran desconocidos que cruzaron el Atlántico o el Pacífico o el río Grande, estamos aquí sólo porque en este país se les acogió y les enseñó que ser que Americano es ser algo más que lo que parecemos, o cuáles son nuestros apellidos, o cómo adoramos. Lo que nos hace a los estadounidenses es nuestro compromiso compartido de un ideal-– que todos somos creados iguales, y todos nosotros tenemos la oportunidad de hacer de nuestras vidas lo que queremos hacer. Es el país de nuestros padres y abuelos y generaciones antes que ellos construidas para nosotros. Ésa es la tradición que debemos respetar. Ese es el legado que debemos dejar a aquellos que están por venir”.

Esto es sólo un vislumbre de lo que el Presidente Obama dijo el 20 de Noviembre de 2014 durante el anuncio de una de las más importantes órdenes ejecutivas que hubiere expedido durante su Presidencia en un esfuerzo para mover la nación hacia un futuro para arreglar nuestro roto sistema de inmigración.

What causes depression?There are two types of depression,

with different causes:A depression caused by brain

disease in which people lose all or part of their ability to feel pleasures from pleasurable things. Since life’s pleasures are gone, these individuals lose interest in activities and feel sad or numb all the time.

A depression caused by reaction to a significant loss or involvement in a bad situation. The brain may still function normally in its ability to sense pleasures, so when the depressed individual is distracted from their circumstances, they may be able to laugh and enjoy things. But when they’re reminded of the event they’re upset about, sadness begins building and affects them again.

What are the most common symptoms of depression?

Depression is characterized by a persistent and pervasive loss of ability to feel pleasures. A person with major depression will not experience pleasures from pleasurable stimuli, such as spending time with friends.

Depressed individuals will often have their sleeping patterns disturbed, diminished concentration and memory, impaired judgement, and/or a waning appetite and sex drive. Thoughts of death, wishes for death and thoughts of suicide are unfortunately all too common, and are a sign that immediate attention and treatment is needed.

Why is depression so common during the holidays?

Holidays are a time when expectations are generally high and stress increases due to expectations of meaningful connections with loved ones and the exchange of “perfect” individualized gifts that will be cherished forever. Further, they come at a time of year when the days are short and sunlight is in limited supply, which can trigger an episode in many people vulnerable to depression.

How can people beat depression during the holidays?

There are four ways people can battle depression over the holidays:

Get some sunlight and exercise. Fifteen to 30 minutes of sunlight, at best in the early morning, will go a long way to alleviating the winter blahs, and who doesn’t enjoy a brisk romp down a snowy lane after dinner?

Adjust your expectations. Don’t let visions of perfection spoil everything. Learn that most things can be good enough – gifts, food, company, etc.

Watch your health. Get enough sleep and eat and drink in moderation. Two glasses of wine are plenty for the evening – one if you’ve already had the eggnog. Pick one cookie on the plate and savor it, instead of eating them all.

If the depressed mood is serious, leading to isolation, crying spells, not sleeping or eating, hopelessness and thoughts of death or suicide, get help immediately.

¿Qué causa la depresión? Existen dos tipos de depresión, con diversas causas: una depresión causada por la enfermedad del cerebro en la que la gente pierde todo o parte de su capacidad para sentir los placeres de las cosas placenteras. Hay cuatro maneras que puede combatir depresión durante las vacaciones: Tomar luz solar y ejercicio. 15 a 30 minutos de luz del sol, es mejor temprano y hacer ejercicio. Ajustar sus expectativas. No dejes que visiones de perfección estropearlo todo. Aprender más cosas que pueden ser suficiente – regalos, alimentos, empresa, etc.. Cuida tu salud. Si es grave el estado de ánimo depresivo, conduce al aislamiento, llorando hechizos, no dormir o comer, desesperanza y pensamientos de muerte o suicidio, obtenga ayuda inmediatamente.

WHAT IS A POSADA? LAS POSADASDe acuerdo con la tradición, estas

fiestas -dedicadas a conmemorar el peregrinar de José y María por los rumbos de Belem.

Estos eventos se empezaron a celebrar en México desde tiempos de la Colonia.

Según los relatos tradicionales, el patriarca José, acompañado de su esposa María, caminó desde la ciudad de Nazaret a Belem para cumplir con la obligación de registrarse para el censo y nueve días les tomó arribar a su destino. Al llegar, la Virgen estaba a punto de dar a luz a su hijo Jesús. Al ser rechazados del mesón y de otros hogares, tuvieron que refugiarse en un establo que personas bondadosas les habían ofrecido.

Este pasaje (conocido ahora como Las Posadas) se conmemora en varios países del mundo católico durante los nueve días anteriores a la Nochebuena.

En México, existe constancia de que en 1587, el religioso agustino fray Diego de San Soria, prior del convento de San Agustín Acolman, en el actual Estado de México, solicitó (y obtuvo) una bula del entonces Papa Sixto V para celebrar anualmente, en esa sede y otras del Virreinato, misas de aguinaldo que recordaran aquel lamentable suceso desde el día 16 y hasta el 24 de diciembre.

Como todo festejo, en un principio esta fiesta se desarrolló en los atrios de los conjuntos religiosos, después se extendió hacia la vía pública: “Las calles se llenaban entonces de mucha gente que con gran bullicio se formaba en procesiones. Había profusión de luces, tanto desde las ventanas de las casas como con las velas que llevaban cada uno de los participantes. Todos cantaban y bailaban, pero en el momento preciso se arrodillaban y rezaban”. De esa manera, lo religioso y lo profano se fusionaron en una original mezcla de devoción y diversión que hizo de las posadas mexicanas algo muy bello y único en el mundo.

Para el siglo XIX Las Posadas se encontraban ya firmemente instaladas en el interior de las casas, pero las concentraciones en las calles y en las iglesias no acabaron. Existen reseñas de aquellos años que describen varios tipos de posadas llevadas a cabo por diferentes grupos sociales como los de

la alta aristocracia, quienes celebraban con suntuosidad y sin escatimar en decoración, belleza y variedades de figuras para el nacimiento y fuegos artificiales.

Por su parte, en las casas de la clase media se solía festejar durante nueve veladas. Los hogares eran adornados con heno, ramas de pino, farolas de papel o vidrio, y se celebraba la posada de manera muy parecida a la actualidad, pero con la diferencia de que en aquel tiempo se tronaban ruidosos cohetes y se rezaba al momento de la entrada de los peregrinos, después de pedir posada.

Desde la mitad del siglo XX, los adornos de faroles se reemplazaron por foquitos de colores y luces eléctricas. Ya no hay músicos vivos y se tocan discos para alegrar la fiesta. En vez de hacer estallar cohetes se distribuyen a los invitados centellantes luces de bengala. Se comenzaron a obsequiar frutas, cacahuates y canastitas con colación a la gente mayor. En el pasado eran canastas de porcelana que

se guardaban como recuerdo, pero más tarde se hacían de palma tejida o de cartoncillo, adornadas con papel de china de colores. Hoy en día la colación se reparte en bolsas de plástico con detalles navideños.

Para la celebración:

- Se adorna la casa con faroles (y a veces con manteles) de papel picado

- Para la procesión, los invitados deben formar una fila y cantar los párrafos de la letanía, al frente de ellos deben ir los Santos Peregrinos

- Posteriormente, los asistentes se dividen en dos grupos: el primero pedirá posada fuera de la casa y el segundo se colocará dentro de ella para responder a los cantos y dar posada

- Al terminar el acto religioso, se repartirá la colación en canastitas de papel, además de las luces de bengala y los silbatos

- El momento más esperado de la posada llega: la ruptura de la piñata

- Una vez que se haya roto la piñata, se reparte una porción de fruta a cada invitado.

Finalmente se dará por terminada la fiesta degustando un vaso con ponche o atole para contrarrestar el frío; éstos serán el complemento ideal de los tamales y los buñuelos hechos en casa.

As all celebration, initially this party developed in the courts of religious assemblies, then extended to the public via: “the streets were then filled many people shaping with great hustle and bustle in processions. There was profusion of lights, both from the windows of the houses as with candles carrying each of the participants. Everyone sang and danced, but well-timed knelt and prayed”. That way, the religious and the profane merged in an original mix of devotion and fun that made the Mexican Posadas something very beautiful and unique in the world.

El pasado 30 de octubre fue celebra-da una recepción especial en la galería de Morris: PRCA, Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance. La recepción celebró un proyecto fotográfico que presentó a individuos y a familias de la comuni-dad latina de Morris.

Del año 2000 al 2010, la población latina en el Condado de Stevens ha aumentado en un 274%. Mientras el perfil demográfico cambia en las áreas rurales de Minnesota, el futuro de las ciudades pequeñas dependerá de cómo recibamos y nos adaptemos a los nuevos pobladores. Las comunidades inmigrantes constantemente enfrentan barreras culturales y de lenguaje; este

proyecto tiene como objetivo abordar estos retos a través de una narrativa visual.

Cada persona y familia latina que fue fotografiada sostuvo un cartel que describía en inglés y en español lo que significaba para ellos vivir en la prade-ra, su sus nuevo hogar. El eveno tam-bién propició más diálogo acerca de los cambios que la comunidad de Morris ha estado experimentando. Algunos de los participantes estuvieron presentes y

Los creadores del proyecto fotográ-fico, Jordan Wente y Natalie Hoidal, estudiantes del tercer año en la Universidad de Minnesota Morris, participantes y fotógrafos del proyecto estuvieron presentes y hablaron en la presentación de la importancia del proyecto.

El evento estuvo amenizado por la música del Señor Juan Manual Delángel, quién vivió anteriormente en Morris, ahora radicado en St. Cloud. Además, el Grupo de Apoyo para Mujeres Latinas de Morris preparó y vendió deliciosos tamales y atol para

beber.El evento fue patrocinado por varias

organizaciones de la cominidad de Morris: PRCA, Lazos (Grupo comu-nitaria que auspicia eventos culturales que celebran la diversida en Morris) y la Oficina del Compromiso a la Comu-nidad de la Universidad de Minnesota, Morris. This past October 30 there was a reception and talk at the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance (PRCA) in Minnesota. The reception celebrated a photography project that depicted individuals and families from the growing Morris Latino community.

From 2000 to 2010, the Latino population in Stevens County increased by 274%. As the demographics of rural Minnesota change, the futures of small towns will depend on how they welcome and adapt to newcomers. Immigrant communities often face language and cultural barriers; this project aims to address such challenges through storytelling.

Every person and Latino family

that was photographed held a sign describing in English and Spanish what living in the prairie, their new homes, meant to them. The event also sparked further dialogue on the changes the community of Morris is experiencing.

The creators of the photography

project are Jordan Wente and Natalie Hoidal, both juniors of the University of Minnesota, Morris. Wente and Hoidal, the photographers, and the Latinos involved in the project were present and together presented a summary of the significance of their project.

During the event Juan Manuel Delángel, a former resident of Morris now living in the St. Cloud area, played lovely Latin music. Also the women from the Latino Morris Women’s Support Group prepared and sold delicious tamales and atole, an authentic Mexican sweet drink.

The event was sponsored by several organizations: PRCA, Lazos

(a community group that supports initiatives to celebrate diversity in Morris), and the University of Minnesota Morris’ Office of Community Engagement. More information can be found on the project’s Facebook page: facebook.com/estarinelprairie.

For its latest independent study, Truven Health Analytics evaluated more than 1,000 U.S. hospitals and singled out 50 that achieved superior clinical outcomes for cardiovascular health. Top 50 heart hospitals have significantly higher survival rates, lower costs, fewer complications and shorter hospital stays.

If all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year’s winners:

patients first in all we do.”According to Jean Chenoweth, Senior

Vice President for Performance Improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals Program at Truven Health Analytics, the study shows that 39 of the 50 winning hospitals in the 2015 study are facilities within a larger health system. “This indicates

that the overall aptitude of hospitals to improve care deliverables increases when they work as a coordinated team to implement well established, proven

and integrated best practices from one facility to the next,” said Chenoweth. “It also infers a significant correlation between hospital leadership and their organization’s outcome and quality achievements.”

Award winners are categorized into peer groups. St. Cloud Hospital is categorized as a teaching hospital without a cardiovascular residency program.

The CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center at St. Cloud Hospital is a comprehensive heart center dedicated to the prevention, discovery and management of heart disease. It offers a full range of heart services and is one of the few sites in Minnesota with a heart research program.

El propósito de este blog, no es para criticar o burlarse de ninguna persona, sino para que hagamos conciencia de cómo vivimos nuestra fe. Ojala que sirva para un nuevo comienzo y tomar en serio nuestra relación con Dios. Aquí solo criticamos los hechos, no las personas.

Este era el 24 de Diciembre, habíamos esperado todo el año para la festividad de la navidad, Lupe mi esposa ya estaba trabajando desde la mañana había preparado la carne y la masa para hacer unos tamales además de una piñata que compramos para esperar la navidad. Le dije: –Lupe, háblale al compadre Odilón y su familia para que se venga a esperar la navidad con nosotros. Al fin mira ya estamos bien preparados, ya me traje un 48 y los tengo en la hielera, además un presidente, un cazador, un capitán y todavía tengo una media de esa de los rusos. Ahora sí que estamos bien preparados para recibir la Navidad.” Inmediatamente mi esposa le hablo a mi compadre, el cual acepto de inmediato, y me dije: “Sabia que no podía resistirse, ese compadre es siempre bien pachanguero.”

Por fin llegaron los compadres, con sus cuatro niños, cargados de botanas, y unos buñuelos que la comadre había preparado, así que inmediatamente le aviento el primer invite: –“Como la ve compadre, ahora si tengo que ofrecerle mire la barrita como esta” – “No pues se ve que usted si sabe cómo celebrar la Navidad compa.” Y pues así, empezamos nuestra “celebración navideña”.

Se llegó la noche, Los calientitos

estaban riquísimos, con sus respectiva canela, caña, pasas, cacahuates, naranja y otras frutas riquísimas con las que los preparamos, pero lo más importante era el ‘piquetito’ que se les puso para que tuvieran sabor.

Por fin se llegó la hora de cenar, ya estaba todo listo, los tamalitos recién salidos, sopa de arroz y unos frijolitos bien refritos donde todos repetimos el plato más de dos veces.

Como a las 8 de la noche, decidimos romper la piñata y todos los niños andaban muy contentos porque se iban a divertir en grande, es más hasta la comadre Petronila se animó y quiso ser la primera en pegarle la piñata, pero como hizo trampa y se quitó la venda, y la rompió luego luego y les acabo la diversión a los niños, a los que tuvimos que ir a comprar unos cohetes a la tienda para que dejaran de dar lata. Esto estuvo peor, porque ahora teníamos que andar prendiendo esos cohetes a los chamacos, por lo que decidimos mejor darles un cigarro encendido que para que los prendieran ellos mismos y nos dejaran en paz.

Y así paso la noche, comiendo, bebiendo y contando chistes de doble sentido afuera de la casa en frente de una fogata que hicimos con una madera vieja que teníamos arrumbada ahí en el corral de la casa. Llegaron las 12 de la noche donde por fin nos dijimos ¡Feliz Navidad! Vamos a ver que nos trajo Santa Claus y ahí nos fuimos todos al árbol de navidad para abrir los regalos.

El gozar y disfrutar de esas fiestas navideñas o alguna otra fiesta de precepto o de obligación como se les conoce, hay que hacerlo si con alegría pero sin caer en esas actitudes de desprecio a Dios, buscando otros descansos inmorales contra la voluntad del Señor, realizando actividades peligrosas para el alma como la borrachera, la glotonería, o solamente el deseo de cosas materiales. Démosles a nuestros hijos verdaderas tradiciones Navideñas y valores Cristianos.

Recuerda que Jesús es la razón de la estación.

De gala se vistió la Iglesia de San Bonifacio en Cold Spring, para recibir a José Alfredo Vargas Huerta y Elizabeth Guadalupe Villela Ortiz, que se unieron en feliz matrimonio después de algunos meses de noviazgo.

Elegantemente vestida de blanco, la novia recibió a su futuro esposo que llego a la iglesia a caballo y vestido de charro mexicano.

Ell Sacerdote Oswaldo Roche, fue el encargado en presidir la ceremonia donde Alfredo y Elizabeth se juraron amor para el resto de sus vidas. “Ha sido el momento más importante en nuestras vidas” Los Padrinos Honor: Paul y Louis Lieggi, de Velación: Adolfo Echevarría Mendoza y Ma. Lourdes Soriano Bañuelos, de Arras: Blanca y Efraín García, de Lazo: María Domínguez y Felipe Vargas, aceptaron la responsabilidad de guiar y de ayudar a los desposados cuando sea necesario en su nueva vida de casados.

Después de la hermosa ceremonia, los novios e invitados pasaron a festejar en grande en uno de los salones sociales de la localidad, donde la música en vivo del mariachi dejo entonar canciones de amor para los nuevos esposos y para los invitados. El baile fue amenizado por uno de los grupos musicales más renombrados del área así como un DJ que también hizo la delicia de los asistentes.

Los padres de Elizabeth María Mercedes Ortiz Ayala y Silverio Villela Ramos como los de Alfredo, Blanca Esthela Huerta Ibarra, estuvieron muy ocupados atendiendo a invitados y ofrecieron riquísimo bufete tradicional mexicano, donde los dones del arte culinario se vieron en su esplendor cuando sirvieron la cena.

Las felicitaciones y los deseos de felicidad fueron el marco de todo este importante evento matrimonial.

President Obama was prepared to address those critics: “The actions I’m taking are not only lawful, they’re the kinds of actions taken by every single Republican President and every single Democratic President for the past half century. And to those members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better, or question the wisdom of me acting where Congress has failed, I have one answer: Pass a bill.”

It did not take long after President Obama’s address to the nation for Democrats and Republicans alike across the nation to react. On one hand, there were Democrats applauding the President for stepping up to the challenge and providing protection to millions of families that are in constant fear of deportation. On the other hand, there were Republicans appalled over President Obama’s actions and argued that he had overstepped his boundaries.

Regardless of where Republicans or Democrats stand, November 20, 2014 will forever be remembered by millions of undocumented immigrants with mixed feelings of joy as well of sadness for the millions of undocumented that this executive order did not grant protection from deportation.

Under the executive order, two groups of undocumented immigrants qualify for deferred action — (1) parents of United States citizen or Resident children who have also lived in the United Sates continuously since January 1, 2010, and (2) those who did not qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals because they were over 31 years old or they entered the country after 2007.

Although immigration reform is still required to fix our broken immigration system, many activists and community leaders could no longer wait on a newly elected Republican controlled Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Many people were impatient for President Obama to use the power of the executive office to provide relief

for the millions of people vulnerable to detention and deportation.

President Obama encouraged a Republican controlled Congress to pass a bill that fixes our immigration system. “I continue to believe that the best way to solve this problem is by working together to pass that kind of common sense law.”

Just last year President Obama “worked with Congress on a comprehensive fix, and last year, 68 Democrats, Republicans, and independents came together to pass a bipartisan bill in the Senate. It wasn’t perfect. It was a compromise. But it reflected common sense. It would have doubled the number of border patrol

five years; …have children who are American citizens or legal residents…[agreed to] register, pass a criminal background check, and… [are] willing to pay your fair share of taxes,” they would be “able to apply to stay in this country temporarily without fear of deportation.” President Obama clarified that this executive order did not apply to anyone who had just recently entered the country without proper documentation or to anyone entering in the future. He also clarified that his executive order did “not grant citizenship, or the right to stay here permanently, or offer the same benefits that citizens receive”

For those that believe President Obama was passing amnesty, had a few fords for them: “I know some of the critics of this action call it amnesty. Well, it’s not. Amnesty is the immigration system we have today -– millions of people who live here without paying their taxes or playing by the rules while politicians use the issue to scare people and whip up votes at election time. That’s the real amnesty –- leaving this broken system the way it is.”

During his address, President Obama called Congress to come together and pass comprehensive immigration reform. “We need reasoned, thoughtful, compassionate debate that focuses on our hopes, not our fears. I know the politics of this issue are tough. But let me tell you why I have come to feel so strongly about it.”

Individuals that are eligible to apply for deferred action will be able to do so in the early part of 2015. Until then, millions of families this winter will be able to enjoy Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years without fearing deportation.

El Presidente Obama aclaró que este decreto no se aplica a cualquier persona que recién haya entrado al país sin la documentación apropiada o a quienes ingresen en el futuro. También aclaró que su orden ejecutiva “no conceder ciudadanía, o el derecho a permanecer aquí permanentemente, ni ofrece los mismos beneficios que reciben los ciudadanos”

Para aquellos que creen que el Presidente Obama pasaba una Amnistía, tenía unos comentarios para ellos: “sé que algunos de los críticos de esta acción lo llaman Amnistía. Bueno, no es. Amnistía es el sistema de inmigración que tenemos hoy- – millones de personas que viven aquí sin pagar sus impuestos o a jugar según las reglas, mientras que los políticos utilizan el tema para asustar a la gente y conseguir votos en época electoral. Esa es la verdadera Amnistía –-dejar el sistema roto de la manera que esta. “

Durante su discurso, el Presidente Obama hace un llamado al Congreso para reunirse y aprobar una reforma migratoria integral. “Necesitamos un debate razonado, amable, compasivo que se centre en nuestras esperanzas, no nuestros miedos. College years were somewhat difficult since they were spent far from family and on a foreign country. Being away from home, speaking another language and trying to understand a new culture were obstacles during the first couple years. Yet generous and kind professors from the university help her made the transition more bearable. Being a Latina in the United States means that we have to be better prepared professionally than any other person of color since we have to prove that what we have achieved materially and professionally is not due to a quota that needed to be met or that we are the product of an affirmative action mandate. After graduating from graduate school, the opportunity to work as an Assistant Director for the Minority Student Services at SCSU presented itself.

“I had the opportunity to be a civil servant helping students of color succeed in getting an education and sharing with them the notion that we cannot do it alone, and that the same way I helped them obtain their goals, they should on due time extend a helping hand to somebody in need.

After serving on that position for a few years I made the transition to a teaching position. There were not Latinas in SCSU in 1989 when I started. There were Latinas colleagues in St. Ben’s and St. John’s as well as in Cathedral High School.”

When we ask her what is her role in the Latino Community, she replayed

“My role in the Latino community is of service.”

We asked Elizabeth what the message is for the color students, she told us “The message for the students of color is to excel at what

you do, be true to your community and remember that you are paving the way for the one who comes behind you.” And “My legacy is to leave this place a little better than when I found it.”

Los años universitarios fueron un poco difíciles ya que estuvo lejos de familia y en un país extranjero. Estar lejos de casa, hablar otro idioma y tratar de entender una nueva cultura fueron obstáculos durante los primeros años de la pareja. Sin embargo la generosidad y amabilidad de los profesores de la Universidad ayudaron a hacer más llevadera la transición.

Siendo una Latina en los Estados Unidos significa que tenemos que estar mejor preparados

profesionalmente que cualquier otra persona de color puesto que tenemos que demostrar que lo que hemos logrado materialmente y profesionalmente es no debido a una cuota que debía cumplirse o que somos el producto de un mandato de Acción Afirmativa. Después de graduarse de la escuela de posgrado, se presentó la oportunidad de trabajar como asistente de dirección de los servicios de estudiantes minoritarios SCSU.

“Tuve la oportunidad de ser un funcionario ayudando a los estudiantes de color a que tengan éxito en obtener

una educación y compartir con ellos la noción de que no podemos hacerlo solos, y que del mismo modo les ayudó a obtener sus objetivos, deberían hacerlo en el debido tiempo, extender una mano de ayuda a alguien necesitado. Después de servir en esa posición durante unos años hice la transición a una posición de enseñanza. No hubo Latinas en SCSU

en 1989 cuando empecé. Hubo colegas Latinas en St. Ben University y St. John University, así como en la Catedral High School”.

Cuando le preguntamos cuál es su papel en la comunidad

Latina, ella respondió “mi papel en la comunidad Latina es de servicio”.

Le pedimos a Elizabeth, que enviara un mensaje a los estudiantes y dijo “el mensaje para los estudiantes de color es sobresalir en lo que hagan, ser fiel a su comunidad y recuerdar que están allanando el camino para los que viene detrás de ellos”. Y “mi legado es dejar este lugar un poco mejor que cuando lo encontré”.

evaporating and new ones are growing. We can consciously generate them and the memories that will be shared with future generations. It all depends on what we want in our lives. My holiday activities include sledding and listening to great music in front of a real fire with hot tea and cookies.

There is the Black friday shopping binge, sharing a favorite holiday movie with friends, and gift cards seem to have replaced most of the ties and socks. These are just a few of the new traditions. Good food and drink still seems to be part of the celebration. Games and conversations have changed, but are still present. Video games have replaced the old board games and real conversations are often interrupted by texting. We can choose what we allow in our homes and families. We allocate time to those activities that we value. Time is precious.

The commercialization of a religious holiday does not bother me, but then I am able to isolate myself from most of the advertising. I am one of the growing subgroup in our culture that avoids cable TV. The excessive and obnoxious commercials have long since driven me from the main stream media. Great films are not designed to be interrupted every few minutes with a loud burst of capitalism. I used to love the simple happy endings in christmas stories like The Grinch, A Christmas Carol, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Our tastes seem more complex and ambiguous now. The film “Bad Santa” has a happy ending if you don’t mind the dark cynical view of humanity. “Home alone” is quite the commentary on who we have become in our fast paced life. A young child wakes to find that he is forgotten and left behind by his entire family. At first he is happy for the autonomy, but he soon realizes how sad, and even dangerous, it can be to be alone.

I often wonder how many of us are left alone on christmas. Involuntary Isolation is often used as a punishment. A time out can be a very effective discipline for naughty children. Excessive solitary confinement is seen as cruel in prisons and yet many Americans have become self isolated by our technology and limited social time. There is no single solution to most problems and we can all be a part of the solution. Remember that you choose how you live and who you let into your life. We entertain rarely due to conflicting work schedules. The demands of a modern life require

extra effort to get some quality face time with those we want close. Face book is nice, but It is always worth the effort to actually be with loved ones. I hope that you all have a memorable Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Good will towards all is still possible, even in these contentious times, and let it begin with us. See you on the slopes. THE NEW CHRISTMAS RECUERDOS Y EL DISEÑO DE LAS TRADICIONES Christmas is more than a religious

celebration. It is the creation of fond memories and the renewal of traditions. My father worked hard 7 days a week on our dairy, but he still took the time to make a sledding hill in our flat yard for his children to use during Christmas school break. While he cleared the yard with his old John Deere, he would pile the snow against

the wall of the granary. We then could use the steep slope of that roof, covered in snow and ice, like a ski jump. We started at the peak of that two story building and shot down the length of the snow ramp at what seemed to us to be insane speeds. The memories of those carefree days rocketing down the hard packed snow of the driveway have inspired me to go sledding every christmas even though I am well into my 50s. Some of the parents at the park must think me quite odd as I ride my old home made wooden sled among the youth on their sleek modern sleds, but such is the power of Christmas traditions. I have even convinced my wife to go as well for memories are best shared. She has demanded a padded seat for this year’s season

Christmas is evolving, like my old sled. Change seems to be the only constant now. I am nostalgic for the characters and stories portrayed in the old classic Rockwell paintings, but we have changed dramatically from my father’s generation. We seem more diverse now and that can enrich our lives, if we embrace it. We don’t all have to look and act the same to enjoy a holiday. You certainly don’t have to be a Christian to enjoy the warmth and

joy of the Winter and the people we cherish.

No one rides in a horse drawn sleigh to grandmother’s house on christmas day anymore. I am very grateful for cars with heated seats and surround sound. I doubt that children string popcorn to decorate a tree that they cut down with their father. I can’t even imagine someone singing christmas songs at my door. I don’t remember the last time that I decorated cookies, but I do love to eat them. Thankfully, ginger bread men are still available at most bakeries. The old traditions are

Mi padre trabajaba duros 7 días a la semana en nuestros establo, pero él tomaba el tiempo para hacer una colina para el trineo en nuestro patio plano para nosotros durante las vacaciones escolares de Navidad. Mientras que limpiaba el patio con su viejo John Deere, apilaban la nieve contra la pared del granero. Entonces podíamos usar la pendiente del techo, cubierto de nieve y hielo, como un salto de esquí. Comenzábamos en el segundo piso del edificio y debido a la longitud de la rampa de nieve en parecía que alcanzábamos súper velocidades.

Los recuerdos de esos días despreocupados deslizándonos como cohetes por la nieve, me han inspirado a andar en trineo cada Navidad a pesar de que estoy en mis cincuenta años de edad. Algunos de los padres en el parque deben pensar que soy bastante raro porque monto mi viejo trineo casero de madera entre los jóvenes en sus trineos modernos elegantes, pero ese es el poder de las tradiciones navideñas. Incluso he convencido de mi esposa para ir juntos ya que los recuerdos son mejores compartidos. Ahora ella me ha exigido un asiento acolchado para esta temporada del año.

Navidad está evolucionando, como mi viejo trineo. El cambio parece ser lo único constante hoy. Me siento nostálgico por los personajes e historias retratados en las viejas pinturas clásicas de Rockwell, pero hemos cambiado dramáticamente desde la generación de mi padre. Ahora parecen ser más diversas y que pueden enriquecer nuestras vidas, si lo acogemos. No todos tenemos que vernos y actuar de la misma manera para disfrutar de unas vacaciones. Ciertamente no tienes que ser un Cristiano para disfrutar de la calidez y la alegría del invierno y las personas que apreciamos.

Ya nadie va en trineo con un dibujo de un caballo a casa de la abuela el día de Navidad. Estoy muy agradecido por los coches con asientos calentitos y sonido envolvente. Dudo que los niños hagan una cadena de palomitas para decorar un árbol que cortan con su padre. No puedo imaginar alguien que canta canciones de Navidad en mi puerta. No recuerdo la última vez que decoré las galletas, pero amo a comérmelas. Afortunadamente, los hombres de pan de jengibre todavía están disponibles en la mayoría de panaderías. Las viejas tradiciones se evaporan y nuevas están creciendo. Conscientemente podemos generar los recuerdos que serán compartidos con las generaciones futuras. Todo depende de lo que queremos en nuestras vidas. Mis actividades de Navidad, incluyen trineos y escuchando buena música frente a una chimenea con té caliente y galletas.

Hoy hay el “viernes negro” donde se compra sin control, compartir tu película favorita de día festivo con amigos, y las tarjetas de regalo parecen que han reemplazado a la mayoría de los lazos y los calcetines. Estas son sólo algunas de las nuevas tradiciones. Buena comida y bebida todavía parece ser parte de la celebración. Juegos y conversaciones han cambiado, pero siguen estando presentes. Los videojuegos han reemplazado a los viejos juegos de mesa y las

conversaciones reales son a menudo interrumpidas por mensajes de texto. Podemos elegir lo que permitimos en nuestros hogares y familias. Asignamos a tiempo a las actividades que nosotros valoramos. El tiempo es precioso.

La comercialización de una fiesta religiosa no me molesta, pero también soy capaz de aislarme de la mayoría de la publicidad. Soy uno de los subgrupos creciente en nuestra cultura que evita la TV por cable. La publicidad excesiva y odiosa desde hace mucho tiempo me ha llevado a retirarme del medio de la comunicación. Las películas grandiosas, no están diseñadas para ser interrumpido cada pocos minutos con un fuerte estallido del capitalismo. Me solían encantar lo sencillo en las historias de Navidad como el Grinch, un villancico de Navidad y Navidad de Charlie Brown. Nuestros gustos parecen ahora más complejos y ambiguos. La película “Bad Santa” tiene un final feliz si no te importa la visión cínica y oscura de la humanidad. “Solo en casa” es bastante el comentario que hemos hecho en nuestra vida de ritmo rápido. Un niño se despierta para encontrar que es olvidado y dejado atrás por toda su familia. Al principio él está feliz por la

autonomía, pero pronto se da cuenta lo triste e incluso peligroso, que puede ser estar a solas.

A menudo me pregunto cuántos de nosotros

quedamos solo en Navidad. Aislamiento involuntario se utiliza a menudo como un castigo. Una vez puede ser una disciplina muy eficaz para los niños traviesos. Aislamiento excesivo se ve tan cruel en las cárceles y aún muchos norteamericanos se han convertido en sí mismo aislado por nuestra tecnología y tiempo social limitado. No hay una sola solución para la mayoría de los problemas y todos podemos ser parte de la solución. Recuerde que usted elige cómo vivir y a quién dejó entrar en tu vida. Nos divertimos raramente debido a conflicto de horarios de trabajo. Las demandas de la vida moderna requieren un esfuerzo adicional para llegar a un tiempo calidad con los que queremos estar cerca. El Facebook es agradable, pero siempre vale la pena el esfuerzo para estar en persona con tus seres queridos. Espero que todos ustedes tengan una memorable feliz Navidad y felices fiestas. Buena voluntad hacia todo sigue siendo posible, incluso en estos tiempos discutibles y que comience con nosotros. Nos vemos en las colinas de nieve.
