Songs at the end of the film
Write about one character who “lived life in the deep” and then experienced
“redemption” in the film and “surfaced” or got to “a more shallow” end.
Why/How? How does the audience know this
character is changed and redeemed, better than they were at the beginning?
The death of Peter Waters after being shot by Officer Tom Hansen, and the experience of his brother,
Det. Waters, finding him and dealing with his mother’s Alzheimers:
Jean Cabot falling down the stairs and Maria, the maid, being her only

Songs at the end of the film
•How does this song, when used at the end, help the audience to better understand
which characters are connecting to others around them and which aren’t?
• Think back – the end of the film did show a few characters looking out at the world from
behind the glass of a window while others seemed to be interacting with other people…
• Choose two characters [ one connecting, one not] and explain….
Symbolism: Ash versus Snow
Anthony and the people in
the back of the van…
Shaniqua and the “car crash” at the end: “Organic
Unity”-coming full-circle
Respond to one of
these:
What do you think the ash is symbolic of and why? Where
did you see it – what was going on and which main character
was noticing it? What might it way about that character?
Same for the snow:

•What troubles you, if anything, about this sequence?
•What made you feel encouraged, if anything, about this sequence?
Follow-up to Clip #1:
Journal Entry 10 of 10 – Due March 26th
• Another woman and a man are arguing near a parked car in a park, along a well traveled
walking path. They are clearly at odds with each other and the man seems to becoming
angry and somewhat aggressive both verbally and physically with the woman. As a matter of
fact, he is even more physically aggressive than the man in the first clip [at times]. They are not
hidden – other people are also walking in the park and are observing it as well.
• What would you do?
• Why?

In your opinion, why did more people stop to assist the white woman than the black woman?
What prejudices or biases or mindsets were present?
How doe we, as a society, address this issue?
