LAB EQUIPM

ENT

Label each piece of equipment with its name and write the description under the tab. This is Entry #8 in your notebook.

UTILITY CLAMP AND RING CLAMP Used to grasp or support various types of glassware over a burner, or on a ring stand.

MORTAR & PESTLE

Used to grind a solid substance into a paste or powder

BEAKER

Used to contain a liquid while mixing, heating, cooling, etc.

NOT ACCURATE FOR MEASURING!

TEST TUBE

Used for holding small amounts of a substance while mixing, heating, cooling, etc.

Can be corked or stoppered and used for storage.

ERLENMEYER FLASK

Used for mixing, heating, cooling substances.

Flat bottom and narrow mouth (can be stoppered) make it ideal for storing substances.

BUNSEN BURNER

Attached to a gas outlet, and used to create a small, intense flame.

Used to heat substances and to do flame tests.

SAFETY GOGGLES

There are various types of safety eye wear.

These protect against chemical splashes and flying debris.

RING STAND

Used with various types of clamps to support things like funnels, burets, flasks, and beakers.

WIRE MESH SQUARE

Placed on a ring stand. The circle in the middle is heat resistant.

Glassware is placed on top of the square, over a burner.

It protects and supports the glassware.

TEST TUBE CLAMP

Works like a clothespin to grasp and hold a test tube.

Used to hold a test tube over a flame.

TEST TUBE BRUSH

Used to clean test tubes and small graduated cylinders.

Large ones can be used to clean beakers, flasks, and large graduated cylinders.

WASH BOTTLE

Think about a capri sun package – if you squeeze it, juice shoots out of the straw.

This bottle contains distilled water, and is used to rinse other substances off of an object.

TONGS

Used to grasp and move hot objects.

THERMOMETER

Used to measure the temperature of a substance.

GRADUATED CYLINDER

THE ONLY piece of glassware that can be used to ACCURATELY measure a liquid.

SPATULA

Used to pick up and move small amounts of a powder.

Can be used to stir a mixture and to scrape the sides of a container.

PIPET

Attached to a bulb or syringe, and used to draw up a small measured amount of a liquid – like a syringe.

PLASTIC MICROPIPET

A small, plastic disposable dropper.

Some have markings that can be used to roughly measure small liquid amounts.

TEST TUBE RACK

Wooden, plastic, or metal frame that is designed to hold multiple test tubes. Can be used to store them, dry them, and hold them while they are in use.

TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE

Used to measure the mass of an object or substance.

STRIKER

The cup contains a piece of steel, and the arm is tipped with a piece of flint.

When the handle is squeezed, a spark is produced.

Used to light Bunsen burners.
