Depuis plus de cent ans, de nombreux Hongrois ont fait du Canadaleur patrie. Les Hongrois récemment arrivés et les générationssuccessives de Canadiens d’origine hongroise ont resserré les liensentre les deux pays et leurs cultures. À l’occasion du cinquantièmeanniversaire de la révolution hongroise de 1956 – l’événementhistorique décisif qui a amené tant de réfugiés hongrois à rechercherla liberté et des perspectives d’avenir au Canada – il convient decélébrer l’apport gigantesque de tant de Canadiens d’originehongroise à la société canadienne dans tous les champs d’activité.

Commandée par le Centre national des Arts, cette exposition decinquante portraits du célèbre photographe V. Tony Hauser, assortisdes propos et souvenirs de ses modèles, rend hommage à cesdistingués Canadiens d’origine hongroise et à leur passion pour leCanada. Le Centre national des Arts remercie chaleureusementBibliothèque et Archives Canada pour sa contribution à cetteexposition. Toutes les photographies de l’exposition ont été acceptéesà titre de don par le Musée canadien du portrait, une division deBibliothèque et Archives Canada.
V. Tony HauserM. Hauser est l’un des meilleurs photographes du Canada. Il aconsacré plus de trente ans à peaufiner son art de portraitiste et dephotographe d’art. Renommé pour ses portraits, il privilégie le noir etblanc pour ses qualités esthétiques et sa durabilité. Il est membre dePhotoSensitive, un collectif de photographes de Toronto qui s’estdonné pour mission de mettre l’objectif photographique au service decauses sociales. On trouve des oeuvres de V. Tony Hauser dans lescollections du Musée canadien de la photographie contemporaine etde Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. Ses portraits ont fait l’objet denombreux livres, notamment Facing Artists et The Power of Passion.

Le Canada et larévolution hongroiseDU 5 AU 22 OCTOBRE 2006 CENTRE NATIONAL DESARTS, MEZZANINE DE LA SALLE SOUTHAMCette exposition complémentaire, présentée par Bibliothèque etArchives Canada en collaboration avec le Centre national des Artset Affaires étrangères Canada, marque le cinquantième anniversairede la révolution hongroise. Associant documents et photos d’archivesà un reportage d’époque, l’exposition s’intéresse aux réactionssuscitées au Canada par l’insurrection survenue à Budapest le23 octobre 1956, lorsque les étudiants et les travailleurs se soulevèrentcontre le régime communiste soutenu par l’Union soviétique. Aprèss’être brièvement retirées de la capitale, les troupes soviétiques yrentrèrent en force en novembre, écrasant la révolte et contraignantdes milliers de Hongrois à l’exil. L’exposition témoigne del’indignation de la population du Canada devant la déterminationde l’Union soviétique à éradiquer toute velléité de liberté du peuplehongrois, et relate les efforts du gouvernement fédéral pour faireface à la crise en assouplissant les règles de l’immigration et entrouvant un moyen d’accueillir les réfugiés hongrois.

Gray et Megan Raney d’Ottawa,est un long-métrage documentaire sur le match de water-polo dedemi-finale des Jeux olympiques de 1956 entre la Hongrie etl’Union soviétique. Miklos et Istvan étaient de jeunesétudiants en foresterie qui prirent la tête de l’insurrection àl’Université de Sopron, apportant une aide directe aux réfugiés enfuite parmi lesquels se trouvait Anna, alors âgée de douze ans. Faitsans exemple dans les annales, le Canada, à l’impulsion de JackPickersgill, alors ministre de l’Immigration, accueillit les quelque300 étudiants en foresterie de l’Université de Sopron, avec leursfamilles et leurs professeurs. Les Sopronais étaient déterminés àrester ensemble. Ils purent ainsi poursuivre et achever leurs étudesensemble, en hongrois, à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique.Après bien des pérégrinations, Anna Porter aboutit à Toronto, oùelle trouva une niche confortable dans la littérature et l’édition.Cinquante ans plus tard, leurs chemins se croisent à nouveau et ilsreviennent sur la courageuse mais brève conquête de la liberté quia changé leurs vies à jamais.
