We are delighted to be presenting the annual Eco Film Festival in Cape Town for its third year. Following the success of last year’s event, we have worked hard to find the best the world and South Africa has to offer and have put together a line-up of exceptional films for 2016.

We will be serving up an exciting programme of 12 feature-length documentaries, 10 short films, and our first SA Director’s Showcase. With South African premieres, our highest content yet of South African productions, guest speakers and participation of film makers we hope you will find engagement and stimulation on the silver screens of our intimate and fabulously independent venue, The Labia Theatre, from the 31st of March until the 3rd of April.

This year, for the first time we are offering multiple screenings of our main features to give you, our audience, more freedom with your viewing choices.

We would like to thank our sponsors – Group One Nissan Stellenbosch, Reliance, Sustainable.co.za and Ballo for their generous support, and our friends at Velocity Trade who support many of our screenings on a regular basis.

We also want to extend thanks to our Partners who help us get the word out about the Festival: Greenpop, Fry’s, CPT, BEN, Fashion Revolution, Hemporium and Exploring Consciousness. And not forgetting The Labia Theatre for their continued support of independent cinema.

It’s our mission to raise awareness, through the amazing medium of documentary film, of the many pressing environmental issues the planet is facing, and the solutions people are taking to solve them. This year we have films exploring, among other topics, climate change, food – both wastage and the need to change our eating habits, conservation issues, social justice, recycling (in one case literally up-cycling!) and sustainable energy. We hope you will be informed, inspired, challenged, uplifted and entertained by this year’s Festival offerings.

COME AND JOIN US FOR OPENING NIGHT

The Opening Night of the Festival is always a special occasion, and this year is no different!

Thanks to our friends and Festival Partners, Fry’s Food Group and Reliance Compost - in partnership with BioCape Wines – there are tasty snacks and organic wine on offer before the screening of our opening night films.

Our Opening Night short film has a very special place in our hearts. Last year, pupils from Cape Town’s Jan Van Riebeek Primary School’s Eco Club attended ECO Film Festival screenings. So inspired were the kids by what they saw, that they decided they wanted to make their own environmental short film. This happened over the course of last year and the film was completed in January 2015.

‘Sak En Pak’ is a testament to the old truism that children are indeed our future.

Opening Night main feature, Landfill Harmonic, has been inspiring audiences at Film Festivals all over the world, and the Orchestra has been touring extensively as a result of the film’s impact. The film has earned multiple awards and clips from the film having gone viral on Youtube and other social media platforms, we are incredibly happy to give this film it’s first cinematic screening in South Africa.

Be sure to book for our Opening Night to avoid disappointment, either by contacting the Labia Box Office at 021 424 5927 OR buy tickets now at Webtickets.co.za

Baobabs – Between Land and Sea (55 mins, Madagascar/France, 2015)

The baobab’s sheer size and original shapes make it one of the most remarkable trees on the planet. In Madagascar, a great source of inspiration for filmmakers and photographers with it’s unique biodiversity and exceptional landscapes, these giants of nature are currently threatened by deforestation. French ecologist and film maker Cyrille Cornu, a renowned expert on these beautiful giants, documents travel by pirogue, exploring 400 km of wild and isolated coastline in the south-west of Madagascar accessing the world of the Vezo, a nomadic tribe of the sea, and the heart of isolated forests that are home to the baobabs.

Bikes vs Cars (91 Mins, Sweden, 2015)

Bikes vs Cars depicts a global crisis that we all deep down know we need to talk about: climate, earth’s resources, cities where the entire surface is consumed by the car. An ever-growing, dirty, noisy traffic chaos. The bike is a great tool for change, but the powerful interests who gain from the private car invest billions each year on lobbying and advertising to protect their business. In the film we meet activists and thinkers from nine cities and three continents fighting for better cities who refuse to stop riding despite the increasing numbers killed in traffic.

Gambling On Extinction (52 mins, Germany/Canada, 2015)

A powerful documentary that takes you from the killing fields in Kenya and South Africa to the trading hubs of Vietnam and China with undercover investigators, rangers, ex-poachers, conservationists and buyers. Director Jakob Kneser exposes the lethal mechanisms of the global trade, the terrorist connection, explains who the customers are, what generates demand, and what can be done to stop the slaughter.

Hope For All – Food Matters. You Matter. (101 mins, Germany, 2015)

Hope For All is a moving and eye-opening documentary uncovering the effects of Western dietry habits to our health, the environment and our treatment of livestock. Evidence-based scientific arguments and solutions send a clear message of hope, if we change the way we eat, we change ourselves and the planet – for good!

How To Change The World(109 mins, UK/Canada, 2015)

A thrilling, sometimes terrifying, film chronicling the adventures of an eclectic group of young pioneers – Canadian hippie journalists, photographers, musicians, scientists, and American draft dodgers – who set out to stop Richard Nixon’s atomic bomb tests in Amchitka, Alaska, and end up creating the worldwide green movement. When youthful energy comes up against the complexities of a growing organization, and idealism meets compromise, the group find their battle to save the planet forces them also to fight each other. This insightful film is also a vibrant, moving reflection on the struggle to balance the political and the personal.

Landfill Harmonic (85 mins, Paraguay/USA, 2015)

The Recycled Orchestra of Cateura is a Paraguayan musical group who play instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight. Under the guidance of idealistic music director Favio Chavez, the orchestra must navigate a strange new world of arenas and sold-out concerts. However, when a natural disaster strikes their country, Favio must find a way to keep the orchestra intact and provide a source of hope for their town. The film is a testament to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit. (Spanish – English Sub-Titles)

Racing Extinction (94 mins, USA, 2015)

Oscar®-winning director Louie Psihoyos (The Cove) assembles a team of artists and activists on an undercover operation to expose the hidden world of endangered species and the race to protect them against mass extinction. Spanning the globe to infiltrate the world’s most dangerous black markets and using high-tech tactics to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction, Racing Extinction reveals stunning, never-before-seen images that truly change the way we see the world.

Revenge Of The Electric Car (90 mins, USA, 2012)

When electric cars first appeared on the market in the 1990s, mass production and commercialisation was abruptly – and dubiously – shut down, a story told in Chris Paine’s first documentary Who Killed The Electric Car? Just a few short years later, the race is back on to develop an affordable, stylish electric car and win over a skeptical public. Revenge Of The Electric Car goes behind the closed doors of Nissan, GM, Elon Musk’s innovative Tesla Motors and an independent car converter named Greg “Gadget” Abbott to find the story of the global resurgence of electric cars. Without using a single drop of oil, this new generation of automobile emerges as the future: fast, furious and cleaner than ever.

The Anthropologist (80 mins, USA, 2015)

The parallel stories of two women: Margaret Mead, who popularized cultural anthropology around the world; and Susie Crate, an environmental anthropologist currently studying the impact of climate change. Uniquely revealed from their daughters’ perspectives, Mead and Crate demonstrate a fascination with how societies are forced to negotiate the disruption of their traditional ways of life, whether through encounters with the outside world or the unprecedented change wrought by melting permafrost, receding glaciers, and rising tides.

This Changes Everything (89 mins, USA/Canada, 2015)

Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change. Inspired by international non-fiction bestseller This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein (pictured below), the film presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Beijing and beyond.

The True Cost (92 mins, USA, 2015)

The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider who really pays the price for our clothing? From glitzy runways to the darkest slums, featuring interviews with leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

The makers of True Cost have launched a campaign for Shima, a Bangladeshi garment worker featured in the film, to cover her daughter Nadia’s education costs for five years. The WYWS revenues from this screening will be donated to this campaign. https://give.creativevisions.org/events/the-true-cost-help-support-shima/e70395

Each year we try to do something new at the Festival, and 2016 is no exception. In this case we hope that the SA Directors Showcase will become a permanent and developing feature, offering the chance for short films, works in progress (features or shorts) and developmental work to screen to our Festival audience, other film makers, media and potential project supporters. Screenings will be followed by Q&A’s with the directors which will range from issues of content, creativity, funding, distribution and the use of new technology and social media. In its first – admittedly tentative – year, the SA Directors Showcase 2016 will screen:

War In The Valley Of Plenty (2016, South Africa, 25 mins, Dir. James Tayler, courtesy Switch Films)Hanover Park is a ghetto of Cape Town hard hit by gang related violence; however, this year an innovative NGO which treats gang violence in the same way as an epidemic has achieved a 51% reduction in homicide. Their antidote is to recruit ex-gangsters as “violence interrupters” to break the cycle.

Finding Shadrek (2015, South Africa, 27 mins, Dir. Simon Ker-Fox Taylor, courtesy Periphery Films www.periphery.co.za)A short documentary about a group of people living amongst the wildest elephants in the world, over generations from being hunters, to poachers and now game scouts. The film explores notions of citizenship and governance

in the context of natural resources in Southern Africa. With the CITES conference in SA later this year, this film arrives at a key point in the complex discussions over the future of wildlife conservation. The film presents strong indigenous voices on the subject of conservation and wildlife governance.

SanDance (working title)(2016, South Africa, 20 mins, Dir. Richard Wicksteed, courtesy OneTime Films)This is raw camera footage, beautifully shot, that works as an ambient piece taking viewers into San culture. The Kuru San dance festival at the San-owned Dqae Qare cultural ranch in Botswana documenting San traditional dance, music and trance healing practices.

Not in My Neighbourhood (2016, South Africa, 10 mins, Dir. Kurt Orderson, courtesy Azania Rizing) A portrait of stories, conveying a history of spatial violence from colonization to gentrification. As cities around the world catapult themselves into ‘World Class’, Global City status, we have to ask ourselves, “at what cost”? The documentary Not in my Neigbourhood gives the account of three people from three, seemingly World Class Cities. It follows their daily struggles, trials and triumphant moments, as they try to shape the cities they live in from the bottom up!

WYWS revenues from the Showcase will be donated to #fundafuture to help finance a future film maker facing the

challenge of finding tuition fees.
