Aim:

To introduce students with the basic essential skills that modern engineers should possess. These will include technical and laboratory skills, data analysis, report writing, project management, team working, and social responsibility of modern engineering.

Content:

This module provides the practical experience which complements modules in the first year of all undergraduate courses in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. It includes practical experiments, skills development and project work.

Outcomes:

By the end of the module, student should be able to:

• have an appreciation of academic and professional integrity issues and how they apply to all aspects of work. They should also be able to demonstrate, through report writing and other forms of presentation media, an appreciation of the various principles related to electrical and electronic engineering, including proper engineering practice and basic project planning.

• demonstrate critical analysis of experimental data and evaluation of system performance, and application of engineering skills in a wider context in solving practical problems.

• select and use appropriate laboratory equipments, apply computer

Assessed by the end of designated period based on continuous assessment through out the year.

Module Elements

This module is entirely lab/project based

Apart from a brief introductory talk, there are no scheduled lectures.

i) Introduction to laboratory instruments

ii) Experiments

iii) Mini project

INTRODUCTION TO LABORATORY INSTRUMENTS

Activities:Laboratory on the usage of instruments.

i) Digital multi-meter

ii) Oscilloscope

iii) Spectrum analyser

The demonstrators will show how to operate the instruments, including oscilloscopes, multi-meters, signal generators and so on, roughly 30 mins long.

Requirements:

Each student is required to submit one report. It is sufficient to submit the instructions with answers/discussion.

The report should be submitted to the faculty

EXPERIMENTS

Activities:

There are ten experiments, all linked to the 1st year

engineering modules.

Each lab should take between 2 to 2.5 hrs.

EXPERIMENTS

Reference materials, including textbooks and web addresses, are provided in the lab instructions.

Some of the instructions contain questions (2 usually) that the students need to answer and show the demonstrators at the beginning of the lab.

MINIPROJECT [ Only for H61LSA and Not for H61LSB]

Aim:

To experience project management, team working, time planning and so on.

The projects are carried in groups of three students, or two if necessary.

Activities:

The circuit in the instruction can be divided into three sections, each student is responsible of constructing,

The three sections are combined and tested.

It is not required that the suggested improvements

should be implemented (they can be if the students

desire), but they must be backed up by reasoning and

analysis.

The students are required to organise, plan, manage and review the

project.

There should be proper project meetings.

Any important decisions such as division of work load change in project direction or difficulties encountered should be recorded and included in the final report.

Circuit inspection:

Students are required to demonstrate the working of the circuits on in the WEEK 10, of SEMSETER 2 (exact date to be announced in Semester 2).

The inspection will be performed by the module lecturer and the demonstrators, two as a group.

We inspect the working of the three circuits individually and combined, the neatness, the students understanding of the circuits and so on;

Individual reports:

Each student will need to submit a report, detailing his/her part of the work;

Group report:

Each group will need to submit a group report;

The requirements of the project reports are given in the instructions, which is in the folder mini project.

The due date to submit the report will be announced later.

Students can collect the components during the 5th week of the first semester.

There are two scheduled mini project laboratory sessions for testing your circuits:

i) 1st Semester

ii)2nd Semester (please refer to the time table for details).

Attendance is compulsory for both sessions.

Policies

Lab Attendance/Absences / and failure to submit coursework– Lab attendance will be taken at the start (first 10 mins) of each lab

session. It is the responsibility of each student to sign against his/her name in the lab attendance sheet.

– Latecomers will not be allowed in the lab and considered to be absent for the lab.

– Student is responsible to notify (through Extenuating

– Student is responsible to notify (through Extenuating Circumstances Form (ECF) ) his/her absence due to unavoidable or legitimate circumstances due to which he/she is/was not able to attend scheduled labs and/or failing/failed to submit coursework on the due date(s).

– If approved by the Director of studies, then the lab will be removed from the final average. Otherwise, the student will get zero.

– If approved by the Director of studies, extension will be granted, otherwise, a penalty of 5% per day of late submission will be applied.
