R E = SUMMARY REPORT TIRE CHIP EVALUATION PERMEABILITY A N D LEACHABILITY ASSESSMENTS
Gentlemen:
Presented herein are the results of our test program assessing the use of tire chips as a lower drainage medium in municipal landfills.
LEACHABILITY EVALUATION
As part of our test program the potential for tire chips to release contaminates when exposed to leachate was assessed. TO evaluate the potential, leachate column tests were performed using leachate from the Lakeview Landfill.
The test procedure involved the placement of tire chips in leachate columns (8" diameter x 48" long) and controlling the flow of leachate through the tire chips. Analytical tests were performed o n the leachate prior to exposure to the tire chips and at prescribed time intervals on effluent leachate samples after exposure to evaluate changes in the constituents. The tests were performed in two ( 2 ) columns at temperatures of 23'~ and 50'~. Figure 1 presents a schematic of the leachate column apparatus. Approximately 45 gallons of leachate passed through each column over a 90-day period. Leachate samples were extracted at 0 (raw isachate), 30. 6 0 and 9 0 day intervals. Analytical tests were performed to obtain the follorling parameters over this time period:
Mr. Anthony W. Eith, P.E. Page -2- Nay 31, 1989
P h Reactivity Cyanides Sulfides
EPA Tox-Metals Arsenic Lead Barium Mercury Cadmium Selinium Chromium Silver
Two laboratories were retained to perform the analytical testing. NUS Corporation was responsible for the raw leachate sampled 2-27-89 and the 3 0 day tests and Lancy Environmental Services was responsible for the raw leachate sampled 4-13-89 and the 6 0 and 9 0 day tests.
A summary of Analytical Test Data is presented in Table 1. As indicated, no appreciable changes in concentrations occurred through the 9 0 day period.
PERMEABILITY TESTING
The purpose of this test was to assess the vertical permeability of randomly placed tire chips under various normal loads representative of waste overburden stress scenarios.
Testing was performed in accordance with ASTM 0-2434 using water as a pore fluid. Initially, four (4) tests were conducted at stresses of 2,500 psf, 5,000 psf, 10,000 psf and 15,000 psf using fresh tire chips.
Following our purchase of a higher capacity loading system, test stresses of 0 , 2,500 psf, 5,000 psf, 10,000 psf, 15,000 psf and 20,000 psf were applied to the sample prior to permeability testing. It is pertinent to note that the tire chips placed in the permeameter in February for the initial test phase were maintained saturated and under a load of approximately 3,000 psf until testing in April using the new equipment.
To adequately evaluate the possible degradation of the tire chips exposed to leachate, permeability testing was performed on the samples removed from the leachate columns. Total leachate exposure time was approximately 114 days.
