As part of our Inquiry ‘Working as a Team’ Year 3/4 students went to Go Climb on Monday. The excursion reinforced the importance of working together. Students were able to develop confidence, problem solving and teamwork skills.

The excursion was a hit, the students had a blast.

LOOK AT ALL THE AMAZING TEAMWORK.

WHAT A SUPER DAY AT GO CLIMB!!!

An open letter to Year 3/4 Students Dear Year 3/4 students, I had the pleasure of attending your excursion to “Go Climb” on Monday and I wanted to thank you for making me feel welcomed and included during the day. It was a fantastic day and I noted many wonderful interactions that showed your best self and also helped to bring out the best in one another. Key examples of this included: Thinking flexibly. You understood that sometimes, we need to think about a problem in a different way in order to solve it. It was great to see so many of you try and find different ways of achieving your climbing goals. Encouraging others. Throughout the day I kept hearing phrases such as “keep trying”, “you can do it” and “can I help you?” Again this shows that you were mindful of what others needed from you in that moment Resilience. Some of the activities were challenging and some children needed a moment to think about how best to manage this situation. It was great to see children having a go and not giving up. Children also engaged in self talk strategies and reminded themselves to do their best. Acceptance. You celebrated the successes of your achievements and accepted the idea that different children had different abilities. It didn’t matter who climbed to the top of towers and who did not. It mattered that nobody felt judged or criticized during the day And finally, you all showed great team work. It was so lovely to see children taking turns, helping one another fasten buckles and including others in their activities.

Thank you all for a wonderful day.

Kind Regards,

Edward Faraci

At the start of another exciting school year it’s a good time to remember that …..

Reading at home can make a HUGE difference!!!The joy and love of sharing a good book on a nightly basis can set the foundation for your child’s reading success.

Not only does parent involvement have a specific and profound impact on children’s reading, but also on children’s language and literacy learning in general. It is through interactions with parents and carers that children can learn new vocabulary, seek clarification of new understandings, and learn to comprehend their expanding worlds.

The research also suggests that we should not stop reading with our children just because they have learned to read independently.

So here’s a few things to remember when reading with/to your child:● Talk about the pictures and make predictions.● Ask questions before, during and after reading. ● Read with expression.● Read favourite books again and again and again….

And don’t forget to engage children in many and varied types of literacy experiences not just storybook reading, for example, cooking, newspapers, television information, instructions, street signs, brochures, junk mail, electronic communication, notes, singing, talk, and written communication.

A reminder that LIBRARY BAGS must be brought to the library every week.

Your child will not be able to borrow without a library bag.

Library bags are necessary to prevent loss and damage to our library books.

Thank you for your co-operation!

I am looking for some fabulous pics of our students reading for a new display in our library titled ‘LOOK WHO GOT CAUGHT READING!’

Photos can be as creative as you wish and family members and pets can be included!

As we know the benefits of reading are endless and positive, so share a photo of yourself with your next read or favourite book!

Photos can be emailed to [email protected] or left at the office.

Looking forward to an awesome library display!Miss Angela (Library)

Hi from your School Sustainability Committee!

So what is sustainability??Sustainability is providing the best for people and the environment both now and in the future.

Some of the ways we can do this include recycling, using less water and power, walking and cycling more, reducing our rubbish and composting.

Our school is just starting its sustainability journey and we'd love you to join us! This year we are excited to welcome Miss Hine and Mrs McCarthy to the committee, along with founding members Miss Maria and Ms Donna.

SCHOOL FETEThere will be a sustainability stall at the fete please drop by and say ‘Hi’!!

NUDE FOOD TUESDAYSTuesdays are our school Nude Food day. This means we try to minimise packaging in our lunchboxes to reduce the amount of rubbish our school sends to landfill. Everyone did such a great job last year that soon every day will be a Nude Food day! Keep up the great work!

RECYCLING @ ST PAUL'SAfter such a great response last year, we will to continue to recycle

- Dried up felt pens, textas, biros, highlighters and markers- Toothbrushes and old toothpaste tubes- Plastic bread tags (the hard square ones)

Keep an eye out for the coloured drop off tubs as they'll be soon appearing beneath the community noticeboard (bottom of the senior stairs).

We have lots of ideas and plans for the year ahead so watch this space…The St Paul's Sustainability Committee

SIMONDS CATHOLIC COLLEGE | West Melbourne & Fitzroy North

Situated across two campuses in the inner city of Melbourne, Simonds Catholic College is in a unique position of being the only Catholic school for boys on the doorstep of the CBD.

Our Year 7-9 students start at the St Mary’s Campus, West Melbourne which is just two blocks away from the Queen Vic Market. Students move to our Year 10-12 Campus in Fitzroy North for their senior studies.

The College commenced in 1996 following the amalgamation of St Mary’s Boys’ Regional School, West Melbourne, and Cathedral College, East Melbourne both of which were Year 7-10 schools. The West Melbourne location was chosen for the school because of its accessibility by public transport. Our students come from all areas of Melbourne. We have expanded to become a Year 7-12 school, offering a broad range of VCE subjects and now occupy classrooms in what was St Mary’s Primary School (closed in 1996) and St Brigid’s Primary School (closed in 2009), on the grounds of the two landmark churches after which the campuses are named.

In 2020 we celebrate our 25 year anniversary.

The College motto, ‘Known, Supported, Inspired’ conveys the essence of our mission. Our school is a learning community that promotes student wellbeing, safety and positive relationships so that students can achieve success and reach their full potential.

“Dear Young People ... Do not be afraid to dream of big things” -- Pope Francis

We are a small school and have outstanding teachers. Our point of difference is that we deliberately limit the size of classes and this translates to increased learning opportunities for our students and big opportunities for your son. Simonds’ close proximity to the inner city means we are able to take advantage of the many excellent cultural and sporting facilities to support and enhance our students' learning. We are fortunate that many activities are only minutes away. We indeed are “the city school for boys”.

We are accepting enrolments for 2021 and 2022 so please join us for a Talk and Tour or contact our Registrar on 9321 9200 and discover the Simonds difference for yourself.
