251 AV (AudioVideo) Cables

Te AV cables provide the audio and video signals to

your stereo and V Te LaCie LaCinema Premier sup-

ports the AV standards shown below

1 Composite videostereo audio ndash Tis is the

most standard video connection as well as left

(white) and right (red) stereo audio inputs

2 S-Video ndash Tis is a higher quality video connec-

tion method for connecting the LaCinema Pre-

mier to Vs (sold separately) with an S-video

connection

3 Component video ndash Tis is the video connec-


mier to HDVs and higher-end Vs (sold sepa-

rately)

4 Coaxial (A) or Optical (B) ndash Tis is the digital

audio connector used to enable surround sound

and connects to the digital input of your Dolby

Digital or DS home theatre AV receiver (sold

separately)

TECHNICAL NOTE If the AV cable includ-

ed with your LaCie LaCinema Premier does not

match the connections on your audiovideo equip-

USB is a serial inputoutput technology for connect-ing peripheral devices to a computer or to each other

Hi-Speed USB 20 is the latest implementation of this

standard and it provides the necessary bandwidth and

data transfer rates to support high speed devices such as

hard drives CDDVD drives and digital cameras

USB 20 Cables

Your LaCie drive is shipped with a Hi-Speed USB

20 cable to ensure maximum data transfer performance

when connected to a Hi-Speed USB 20 port Te cable

will also work when connected to a USB port but drive

performance will be limited to USB 11 transfer rates

Connect the power supply cable to the power supply1

port on the back of the LaCie LaCinema Premier

and to a grounded power outlet (Fig 31-A)

Connect the Hi-Speed USB 20 cable into the3

Hi-Speed USB 20 port on the back of the LaCie

LaCinema Premier Connect the other end of the

Hi-Speed USB 20 cable into an available USB port

on your computer (Fig 31-C)

Te LaCinema Premier icon will appear on your4

computer (on the desktop for Mac users and in the

My Computer folder for Windows users) after a

few seconds

32 Transferring Files to the LaCinema Premier

When the LaCie LaCinema Premier is recognized

by your computer you can start adding your music pho-

tos and videos o add files simply drag and drop the

appropriate files and folders Organize folders any way

you want

o remove files from their folders simply drag themto the rash or the Recycle Bin

IMPORTANT INFO If you want to remove

files from the LaCie LaCinema Premier you must

empty the rash or Recycle Bin after placing the

files there Otherwise the files will still have a ref-

erence and occupy hard drive space


322 Data File Storage

You can also use your LaCie LaCinema Premier

to store standard data files Just create a separate folder

(such as ldquoBackuprdquo) on the drive for storage and simplydrag and drop files into it

External USB devices feature ldquoplug amp playrdquo connec-

tivity which means that your drive can be connected and

disconnected while the computer is running o prevent

failures however it is important to follow these steps

when disconnecting your LaCie hard drive

Mac Users

Drag the LaCinema Premier drive icon to the1

trash (Te icon pictured below is a generic USB

device icon Your drive may be represented by

an icon that looks like the drive itself)

When the icon disappears from the desktop2

the drive can be disconnected

Windows Users

From the1 System Tray (located in the lower

right-hand side of your screen) click the Eject

icon (a small green arrow over a hardware im-

age)

A message will appear listing the devices the2

Eject icon controls (it should say ldquoSafely re-

moverdquo) Click on the LaCie hard drive in this

prompt

Tis message will appear ldquoSafe to Remove3

Hardwarerdquo (or similar) It is now safe to discon-

nect the device

puter at the same time

TECHNICAL NOTE When using the Com-

posite AV cable use either the S-Video connec-

tor or the yellow Composite RCA jack Do not

use both You will not receive a signal if both the

S-Video connector and the yellow Composite

RCA jack are plugged in at the same time

To connect the LaCinema Premier to TV via a stereo audio and composite video cable power on the

LaCinema Premier as described in section 41 and follow the diagram below

5 LaCie LaCinema Premier Remote Control

Some of the buttons of the remote control have dif-

ferent functions or no function at all depending on the

type of file you are viewing Tis chapter discusses the

button functions for each type of file (movies photos

and music) and battery installation

51 Battery Installation

Te remote control uses two AAA batteries Te

batteries are not pre-installed so you will need to install

them before you can use the remote control

To install the batteries

Remove the battery compartment cover1

Load the batteries onto the battery compartment2

Position the batteries so that the ldquo+rdquo symbols on the

batteries face the same direction as the ldquo+rdquo symbols

on the battery compartment

Slide the battery compartment cover back into the3

remote

IMPORTANT INFO If you will not be using

the remote control for an extended period of time

we recommend that you remove the batteries

Te LaCie LaCinema Premier allows you to updatethe firmware of the device by reading firmware binary

codes which are located in the update folder

To update the firmware

download Connect your LaCinema Premier to yourcomputer Drag the firmware file you just download-

ed into the Update folder on the LaCinema Premier

Disconnect the LaCinema Premier from your com-

What is Formatting

When a disk is formatted the following things oc-

cur the operating system erases all of the bookkeeping

information on the disk tests the disk to make sure thatall of the sectors are reliable marks bad sectors (ie

those that are scratched) and creates internal address

tables that it later uses to locate information Te LaCie

Setup Assistant formatted your drive for you automati-

cally the first time you used it o reformat your drive

follow the instructions in this section

Use NTFS if

you will be using the drive only with Windows

2000 or Windows XP (performance will generally

be greater when compared to FA 32) Tis file

system is compatible in read only mode with Mac

OS 103 and higher Maximum single file size isnot limited

Use FAT 32 (MS-DOS) if

you will be using your drive with both Win-

dows and Mac OS 9x or 10x or sharing the drive

between Windows 2000 XP or Vista and 98 SE

Maximum single file size is 4GB

Once yoursquove connected your LaCinema Premier and

it is recognized by your operating system (ie Windows

2000 XP Vista or Mac OS X) you may need to refor-

mat its hard drive particularly if you will be transferring

files larger than 4GB to the LaCinema Premier Te

following information will help you determine the best

format for your system configuration

IMPORTANT INFO Reformatting will erase

everything from the hard drive If you have infor-

mation that you want to protect or continue to use

back up this information before reformatting

Te process of formatting a drive on a computer

running Windows 2000 Windows XP or Windows

Vista consists of two steps (1) installing a signature on

the drive and (2) formatting the drive Tese steps will

erase anything that is on the disk

Connect the drive to the computer via the interface1

port

Right-click2 My Computer and select Manage

From the ldquoComputer Managementrdquo window select3

Disk Management (located below the Storage

group)

If the ldquoInitialize and Convert Disk Wizardrdquo window4

appears click Cancel Windows will list the hard drives that are installed5

An ISO file is an image of a DVD disc Tis is a

common format for DOS Windows Mac OS X Linux

and other operating systems Te LaCie LaCinema Pre-

mier can play ISO files ISO files of commercial DVDs will not play back due to encryption


Premier is not designed intended or may be used

to violate any onersquos copyright or other IP (Intel-

lectual Property) rights Each LaCie LaCinemaPremier user may only use their LaCie LaCin-

ema Premier in conjunction with materials legally

owned or licensed by such user and only to the

extent that such ownership or license rights permit

such use

Te LaCie LaCinema Premier is fully compatible

with the XviD format (an ISO MPEG-4 compliant video codec) and can play any video encoded with this

compression format

In order for the LaCie LaCinema Premier to displaysubtitles in the MPEG-4 format both the ldquomovieavirdquo

and N ldquomoviesrtrdquo files should be placed in the same

84 Optimizing Data Transfers

Data transfers are the flow of data that accomplish-

es a task usually related to moving data from storage

to computer RAM or between storage devices With

external drives such as the LaCie LaCinema Premier

the data is transferred from the drive to the computer

via the USB interface Te data is fed from the drive

through the USB port on the drive and passes to the

computer through the USB host-bus adapter interface

USB

o utilize the enhanced Hi-Speed USB 20 per-

formance your computer must be equipped with a Hi-

Speed USB 20 host bus adapter card (either sold sepa-

rately or integrated by your computerrsquos manufacturer)and the appropriate drivers Tese host bus adapter cards

which include one or more USB ports are shipped with

special Hi-Speed USB 20 drivers that enable the com-

puter to control the card Tese drivers must be installed

in order for USB 20 devices connected to the port to

work at their correct speeds

Computers running Windows 2000 and Windows

XP automatically manage Hi-Speed USB 20 devices

and drivers while Windows 98 SE and Windows Me

will require that drivers be installed before a Hi-Speed

USB 20 device is attached

Mac OS 9x does not support Hi-Speed USB 20

functionality and all Hi-Speed USB 20 devices will

only operate at the original USB specifications Mac OS

1027 and later supports Hi-Speed USB 20 and Mac

OS 10x also supports Hi-Speed USB 20 but you will

have to purchase a third-party PCI or PC Card and ap-

propriate drivers

DivXreg and XviDregcompatibility

When a new version of DivXreg or XviDreg is released will the LaCieLaCinema Premier be able to playthose files too

Provided that the new version complies with the ISO MPEG- 4standard the LaCie LaCinema Premier should be able to play thenew versions

Does the LaCie LaCinema Premiersupport external subtitles withDivXreg files

Yes the LaCie LaCinema Premier does support this functional-ity by using Unicode text files with extensions sub(MicroDVDformat) and smi In order to work correctly use the same file namefor both the video file and subtitle text file and store both of themin the same folder location on your LaCie LaCinema Premier

For example if the file name of the video file is ldquoMovieavirdquo then you will need to re-name the subtitle text as either ldquoMoviesubrdquo orldquoMoviesrtrdquo

Depending on file size photos may take several seconds to loadproperly Reducing the photorsquos resolution will reduce the file size as well and allow the file to load faster

Warranty Information

LaCie warrants your drive against any defect in ma-

terial and workmanship under normal use for the peri-

od designated on your warranty certificate In the event

this product is found to be defective within the warranty

period LaCie will at its option repair or replace the

defective drive

Tis warranty is void if

Te drive was operatedstored in abnormal use or

maintenance conditions

Te drive is repaired modified or altered unless such

repair modification or alteration is expressly autho-

rized in writing by LaCie

Te drive was subjected to abuse neglect lightning

strike electrical fault improper packaging or acci-

dent

Te drive was installed improperly

Te serial number of the drive is defaced or missing

Te broken part is a replacement part such as a pick-

up tray etc

Te tamper seal on the drive casing is broken

LaCie and its suppliers accept no liability for any

loss of data during the use of this device or for any of

the problems caused as a result

LaCie will not under any circumstances be liable

for direct special or consequential damages such as but

not limited to damage or loss of property or equipment

480p ndash Also known as 480 progressive this is a form

of standard-definition digital television (SDV) which

is similiar to VGA computer displays A DVDrsquos resolu-

tion is 480p but this resolution can only be seen when

the DVD player outputs a progressive-scan signal and

the television has progressive-scan or component-video

inputs

720p ndash Also known as 720 progressive this is one

of two formats designated as a high-definition digital

television (HDV) ASC DV standard Tis tech-

nology uses progressive scanning and is comprised of

720 vertical pixels by 1280 horizontal pixels

1080i ndash Also known as 1080 interlaced this is the

second of two formats designated as a high-definition

digital television (HDV) ASC DV standard Tis

technology uses interlaced scanning and is comprised

of 1080 vertical pixels by 1920 horizontal pixels

AC3 (Audio Coding 3) ndash Tis is an advanced audio

compression technology that allows encoding of six

separate channels at a bit rate of 448kbitss

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) ndash A file format that can

contain audiovideo compressed standards using differ-

ent combinations of codecs (eg DivXreg video file and

a WMA audio file) DivXreg ndash A video codec devel-

oped from the new MPEG-4 compression standard

which allows for compressiondecompression of videos

into a specified format Te DivXreg codec can play

movies using any DivXreg-enabled player such as theLaCie LaCinema Premier DivXreg movies offer better

compression and higher quality than standard MPEG

movies

DTS ndash Digital sound technology which provides the

technology for virtually all movie soundtracks

Firmware ndash Permanent or semi-permanent instruc-

tions and data programmed directly into the circuitry

of a programmable read-only memory or an electroni-

cally-erasable programmable read-only memory chip

Used for controlling the operation of the computer or

tape drive Distinct from the software which is stored

in random access memory and can be altered

ID3 Tag ndash An embedded tag in MP3 files that com-

municates a songrsquos title artist and album Tese tags

can be edited

MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) ndash Teseare the developers of the MPEG-1 (VideoCDs)

MPEG-2 (DVDs and SuperVCDs) and MPEG-4

(DivXreg WMV) video compression standards Te

MPEG group is also responsible for the development

of the MP3 and AAC audio compression standards

NTSC (National Television Standards Commit-

tee) ndash Tis group is responsible for the development ofa set of protocols used for transmission and reception

of V broadcasts in the United States An NSC im-

age has 525 horizontal lines per frame which are inter-

laced from left to right top to bottom NSC signals

are not directly compatible with computer systems

PAL (Phase Alternation Line) ndash Tis is the analog

V display commonly used in Europe Te PAL imagehas 625 horizontal lines per frame and the color defi-

nition differs slightly from the NSC standard

VOB (Video OBjects) ndash Te format in which DVD

movies are stored Within each VOB file a number of

videoaudiosubpicture streams are stored Subpicture

streams refer to the subtitles on DVDs and other VOB

files Tese subtitles are video streams that overlay the

main picture stream and can be turned on or off

WMA (Windows Media Audio) ndash An audio format

developed by Microsoftreg for audio streaming and com-

pression

XviD ndash A video codec very similiar to DivXreg based
