LAST TIME OUT: LAFAYETTE,La., (12-16-2006) - Arkansas State seniorguard Rudy Sims recorded the first triple-double in the history of the ASU women'sbasketball program, sparking the LadyIndians to a 65-58 overtime victory overthe Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (8-4, 1-1) Saturday night at Earl K. LongGym. The game was the Sun BeltConference opener for ASU, and boostedthe Lady Indians to 7-4 overall on the sea-son.

Sims finished the night with 14 points,11 rebounds and 10 assists, overshadow-ing the fifth double-double of the seasonby senior center Adrianne Davie, who fin-

ished the game with 26 points and 15rebounds. Sims' effort was even moreremarkable considering she started thegame 0-for-8 from the floor.

“I have been coaching a lot of yearseither as an assistant or as a head coach, and that was my first triple-double to seein person,” said ASU head coach BrianBoyer. “It is a huge accomplishment, especially because of the way it happened. She was struggling from the field, but shedidn't quit. She is such a great example foryoung players. When her shot wasn'tfalling, she found another way. She gotdouble figure rebounds and double figureassists, and then all of a sudden the shotsstart falling.”

The Lady Indians rallied from a five-point deficit in the final five minutes ofregulation to send the game into overtime.Davie hit a short jumper with 1:51 to playin regulation to pull the Lady Indianswithin a point a 50-49, and sophomoreguard Caroline Starr tied the game at 50-50 with a free throw at the one-minutemark. Arkansas State had an opportunityto win the game in regulation, but Sims'driving shot in the lane with six secondsremaining was short of the mark.

Arkansas State dominated the over-time period, scoring the first nine point totake a 59-50 lead. Sims' steal, layup andfree throw with 3:34 to play ignited theASU run, and was followed by six straightpoints from Davie, whose free throw with1:02 remaining gave ASU its biggest leadof the night at nine points.

Louisiana-Lafayette's Sonora Edwardstrimmed the Lady Indian lead to 59-52with a jumper at the 52-second mark, butStarr responded with a pair of free throwsfive seconds later to boost the lead back tonine points and put the game away.

In the first half, the Lady Indians couldnot find a rhythm and trailed 27-23 at thebreak. Arkansas State turned the ball over15 times in the opening frame, but stayedin striking distance thanks to 13 first-halfpoints from Davie. The Lady Indians suf-fered a season-high 28 turnovers in thegame, but turned the ball over just once inthe overtime period.

“I think the key to this whole gamewas that we got to halftime with it stillwithin reach,” said Boyer. “We almost feltlike that was a victory within itselfbecause of our turnovers and the offensive

JONESBORO, Ark. (11/13/06) — Guards Ali Carter and RudySims rained three-pointers as each poured in 19 points to leadArkansas State past Southeastern Conference foe Alabama, 73-56, inwomen’s basketball at ASU’s Convocation Center Monday night.

Carter, a senior from Pocahontas, hit five-of-nine, while Sims, asenior from Memphis, was three-of-four from beyond the arc. As ateam, the Lady Indians hit 47 percent from outside the line (9-of-19)to pace the Tribe. Adrianne Davie added 14 points and six reboundsand freshman Lyndsay Schlup added 10 points to round out ASU’sdouble-figure scoring.

“I am pleased with our effort tonight,” said Head Coach BrianBoyer. “We forced them into 15 turnovers in the first half and we onlyhad five. On the rebounding, it was only a one or two-point differ-ence, and we got so many more shots in the first half to build the lead.In the second half, it was a matter of just answering and our playersdid a good job of that.”

After trading baskets in the early part of the first half, ArkansasState took a 12-10 lead following a goal by Schlup at the 12:03 mark. The 6-1 forward from California, Mo., was fouled by Alabama’sHarriet Barnes and Schlup hit her free throw to put the Lady Indiansup by three. ASU never trailed after that and built the lead by as muchas 25 in the second half.

The Crimson Tide was able to cut the gap to 10 at the 11:49 markin the second half when Nathalie Reshard and Talisha Chandler wereable to score off a couple missed ASU shots. However, the LadyIndians forced two quick turnovers on the other end of the court andwere able to boost the lead back to 19.

“It seemed like Rudy, Ali and Adrianne seemed to have an answerevery time,” continued Boyer. “When it was 14 and they cut it to 10,we answered. Another time, they cut the lead to 10 and we pushed itback to 16. A lot of that came from the leadership of that group inanswering those runs.

“Just before the half, the execution by Rudy was picture-perfect,and Ali delivered on the three and that was a huge lift momentum-wise and points-wise. Rudy made very good decisions and shot theball well. I thought that was a great, great effort on her part.”

Kate Mastin led all Alabama scorers with 19 points and Reshardhad six boards. Both teams now stand 1-1 overall.

ASU vs. CharlotteHalton Arena Nov. 10, 2006 Charlotte NC

CHARLOTTE, NC (11-10-2006) — The Arkansas State Lady Indians’2006-07 basketball season got off to a rough start Friday night as the Tribedropped a 76-65 decision on the road against the Charlotte 49ers.

The Lady Indians committed 25 turnovers in the game, while handingout just seven assists.

“Their pressure was one of our problems,” said ASU head coach BrianBoyer. “Charlotte really, really pressured us, and our answer to is was tobury our heads and go one-on-one too much. Rather than utilizing each otheras a team, we just went one-on-one, and that got us in trouble with theturnovers.”

Charlotte built a 36-26 lead at the break, then scored the first eight ofthe second half to stretch the lead to 44-26 before Rudy Sims stopped thedrought with a short jumper at the 17:21 mark.

Arkansas State managed to cut the 49er lead to single digits when sen-ior Adrianne Davie hit a three pointer with 11:15 remaining to make it 50-41, but Charlotte reeled off six straight to stretch the 49er lead to 56-41.

The Lady Indians again made it a single-digit game when senior RudySims sank a basket at the 4-minute mark to cut the Charlotte lead to 66-57.Following Sims’ basket, ASU had a chance to cut the lead further, but Daviecould not connect on a layup, and Charlotte answered on the offensive endwith a bucket to extend the lead to 68-57, and the Lady Indians could notmake another push down the stretch.

“We came out really flat in the second half, and were on the brink of get-ting blown out, but the players hung tough and kept it within reach,” Boyersaid. “We chipped away and actually had a shot just after the four-minutemark to put some real pressure on them. We tell our players that when youare on the road against good teams, you have to be flawless, and at that stageof the game you have to make every shot, get every rebound, and take careof the ball, and we weren’t quite tough enough to make those plays.”

Sophomore Caroline Starr led ASU with 14 points, followed by Simswith 12 and freshman Lyndsay Schlup with 10 points, nine rebounds andthree blocks in her Lady Indian debut.

“I was really proud of Lyndsay in her first start,” said Boyer. “There isno question that she gave us a huge spark early on with her offensiverebounding. She kept flying to the ball, and that is a real positive to see herdo that.”

Davie added nine points to the Lady Indian totals, Ali Carter and EbonieJefferson added six each, Ashley Anderson finished with five points, andVeronica Smith closed out the ASU scoring with three points.

Sabrina Gregory led Charlotte with 22 points and eight rebounds.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (11-17-2006) — Missouri’s Tiffany Brooks andCarlynn Savant scored 22 points each to offset 26 points by ArkansasState’s Adrianne Davie, and led the Lady Tigers (3-0) to a 74-53 victoryover the ASU Lady Indians (1-2) Friday night at Mizzou Arena.

ASU led 10-9 before Missouri’s Alyssa Hollis sank a 3-pointer toignite a 14-2 run that put the Lady Tigers on top 23-12 with just over eightminutes to play in the first half.

A bucket from Arkansas State’s Rudy Sims stopped the Lady Tigerrun, and ASU kept pace for the remainder of the half, despite a 12-2shooting advantage from the free throw line for the Missouri. The LadyTigers hit 11-of-12 shots from the charity stripe in the first half, whileASU was 2-of-2 as Missouri took a 40-29 lead into the locker room at thebreak. Missouri also out-rebounded ASU 27-16 in the first half, 16 of theboards on the offensive end.

“We faced a good team on the road, and we didn’t handle ourselvesvery well,” said ASU head coach Brian Boyer. “The rebounding was onething, but the problem was way before the rebounds ever happened. Wewere out of position defensively, we didn’t rotate effectively defensively, and hence, we were never in a position to rebound. We were so out ofposition beforehand, that we never had a chance to rebound the missedshots.”

In the second half, matters got worse for the Lady Indians asArkansas State managed just six points through the first 16 minutes, andthe Missouri lead ballooned to as much as 29 points.

For the game, Missouri enjoyed a 72-55 advantage in shots takenfrom the floor, out rebounded the Lady Indians 46-33, and forced 21 ASUturnovers.

In addition to Davie’s 26 points, the Lady Indians also got 15 pointsfrom Rudy Sims, four from Ashley Anderson, and two each from AliCarter, Ebonie Jefferson, and Lyndsay Schlup.

The Lady Indians’ Missouri road trip continues Monday night asASU heads to Springfield to take on Missouri State in a 7:05 matchup.

“Right now, I’m not worried about Monday night, I am worried aboutDecember 16 when the conference season starts,” Boyer said. “We haveto get ourselves re-energized, and we’ve got to get our effort back...andthat’s going to start defensively. We’ll take Monday when it gets here, butright now I am worried more about the middle of December when SunBelt play starts.”

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (11-20-2006) — The Arkansas State Lady Indians (2-2) used a smoth-ering defense and double figure nights from Adrianne Davie, Ashley Anderson, and Ali Carter todefeat the Missouri State (0-3) Lady Bears 67-54 Monday night at the John Q. Hammons Centerin Springfield.

Davie finished with a double-double on the night, scoring 21 points and pulling down 10rebounds, Anderson added 16 points and Carter scored 10.

ASU forced 24 turnovers in the game, and held Missouri State’s Tahnee Balerio, who cameinto the game averaging 18.5 points, to just 10 on the night - zero in the first half. Balerio did notscore until she hit a three with just over 14 minutes remaining.

The victory came on one of the toughest home courts in the country. Missouri State holds a237-33 record on its home court since the 1989-90 season.

“The whole plan was to work on Balerio, to wear her out,” said ASU head coach BrianBoyer. “We have watched Rudy Sims for over three years, and I sometimes still underestimatehow good of a defender she is. Rudy was right in her face. We worked in Jazmine Taylor andBrittney Hiles, and they did a good job on her as well. That’s where it all started for us tonight, with our guards putting pressure on Balerio.”

Arkansas State went on a 9-0 run midway through the first half to take a 15-6 lead, and led27-19 at the half. ASU’s eight-point cushion at the break was helped by six steals, 12 points fromDavie and eight from Ashley Anderson.

Anderson scored the first eight ASU points of the second half to push the Lady Indian leadto double digits, and when Missouri State head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson called for atimeout at the 17:24 mark, ASU had built the lead to 35-23. Following a bucket by MissouriState’s Tiff Terwelp, Arkansas State’s Caroline Starr sank a three pointer from the left corner andDavie sank a pair of free throws to stretch the Lady Indian lead to 40-25. Arkansas State main-tained the double-digit lead until the eight-minute mark, when Missouri State began to make apush.

With just under seven minutes to play, the Lady Bears had whittled the ASU lead to 49-42on a pair of free throws by Balerio, then guard Roxanne Stiles penetrated and sank a short jumperat the six-minute mark to make it 49-44.

Sims answered with a jumper for ASU, followed by a three from Carter, and with five min-utes to play the Lady Indian lead was back to 10 at 54-44.

The Lady Bears pulled to within seven twice in the next three minutes, then got to withinsix on a putback by Davida Moore, but Carter answered with another three and Sims drove for alayup with 1:10 remaining to put the lead back to 11 at 62-51. Davie converted a three-point playwith 44 seconds remaining to put the game away.

“It hard to describe how tough it is to play here,” said Boyer. “And when Ali Carter steppedup and nailed the three late in the game, it was like she was in Pocahontas in the gym by herself.”

In addition to the double-digit nights from Davie, Anderson and Carter, ASU got sevenpoints from Starr, six points and six assists from Sims, five from Hiles and two from Taylor.

Missouri State was led by 14 points from Stiles.

JONESBORO, Ark. (11/24/06) — Despite Rudy Sims’ season-high 23points and a late second-half surge, Arkansas State’s Lady Indians dropped aclose one, 67-61, to 10th-ranked Purdue Friday night at ASU’s ConvocationCenter. Arkansas State drops to 2-3 overall while the Boilermakers are a per-fect 6-0 on the year.

ASU’s Adrianne Davie added 13 points and 10 rebounds to pace theTribe, while Caroline Starr and Ali Carter each had nine.

“Let’s face it, we played pretty good and they still figured out how to getout of here with a win,” said Head Coach Brian Boyer.

ASU got off to a quick start behind a couple of three-pointers by Sims andStarr to put the Lady Indians up, 15-9. Purdue went into a zone defense andthe Lady Indians struggled with the Boilermakers’ tall front line which heldASU scoreless for nearly 10 minutes in the first half. Purdue led by as muchas 14 points before ASU fought back to cut the lead to three, 39-33, at the half.

“You can’t give up runs like that on average teams,” continue Boyer.“During that stretch we had so many turnovers that turned into points forPurdue. You hear it in football so often, but the defense was on the field toomuch.”

Davie came out in the second half and scored two straight layups and ajumper by Sims evened the score at 39-all before ASU hit another four-minutescoring drought which saw Purdue’s lead climb to 11. ASU turned on its owndefensive efforts to force the Boilermakers to miss some shots. The LadyIndians made the transition baskets, slicing the Purdue lead to five, 64-59.ASU had to foul late and several Lady Indian three-point tries wouldn’t fall, leaving the final score.

“In basketball, you can never underestimate the first two minutes of thesecond half, and our players came out and really believed. The run at the endof the first half really gave these players enough life to think we had a shotthere.

“They carried over into the second half to give us a chance, but you haveto give it to Purdue, they didn’t get rattled. They just seemed to answer.”

Katie Gearlds led Purdue with 17 points and FahKara Malone andLindsay Hylton-Wisdom each added 15. Wisdom-Hylton had seven boards.

Adrianne Davie led the Lady Indians with 21 points, followed by RudySims with 15 and Ali Carter with 12 as ASU evened its record at 3-3 on theseason. UAPB dropped to 0-5 on the year.

In addition to her 21 points, Davie grabbed 11 rebounds to notch her thirdconsecutive double-double. Davie also tied a career high with four blockedshots in the game.

Arkansas State jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the early going with Simsfinishing the first half with 15 points, to help the Lady Indians build a 45-31lead at the break.

“I thought the start was not very good,” said Head Coach Brian Boyer.“There are two ways to look at it-the outcome and the performance. It wasn'texactly the performance we wanted, but we got the outcome.”

ASU quickly expanded the lead to 20 points in the second period as Daviepoured in 17 second-half points. The ASU lead reached 30 points when fresh-man Jazmine Taylor hit a free throw to make 79-49 with 3:15 remaining.

All 13 players on ASU's active roster played, and all scored in the game.In addition to the double figure afternoon from Davie, Sims and Carter, theLady Indians also got seven points each from Ashley Anderson and LyndsaySchlup, six points from Jazmine Taylor and five from Caroline Starr.

Veronica Smith added four points, Tabitha Christian finished with threepoints, Kelsey Lock, Melia Pence, and Ebonie Jefferson all added two points, and Brittney Hiles closed out the scoring with a single point.

“We did a better job the second half of getting the ball to Adrianne but shedid a better job of finishing. But, she's a competitor.”

ASU vs. South Dakota St.ASU Convocation Center Nov. 30, 2006 Jonesboro, AR

JONESBORO, Ark. (11-30-2006) - Arkansas State senior Adrianne Daviepoured in a career-high 31 points and senior Rudy Sims added 20 to lead theLady Indians to a 67-52 win over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Thursdaynight at the ASU Convocation Center. ASU is now 4-3 overall while SouthDakota State drops to 4-2.

Almost 50 percent of Davie's points came from the charity stripe, as shesank 15-of-17 from the line on the night. Davie also finished the night shoot-ing 8-of-14 from the floor, pulled down eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

“Adrianne is strong; she catches, finishes and gets to the free throw line,”said ASU Head Coach Brian Boyer. “When a player like Adrianne can hit 15of 17 from the free throw line, she's going to have a great night.”

The Lady Indians held South Dakota State guard Megan Vogel to just fourpoints on the night. Vogel came into the game averaging just over 20 pointsper game.

“We're just thrilled with the fact that I think our players really bought intothe keys to get this victory,” continued Boyer. “I know statistically people willlook at performances of Adrianne and Rudy that were great offensive perform-ances. But, truly it was a great team effort. We were active and bought intomaking someone else beat us besides Vogel. They got some open looks but wemade someone else shoot the ball and that's what we wanted to do.”

The Lady Indians never trailed in the game and stretched the lead to dou-ble digits at 22-12 when Davie sank a pair of free throws with 7:42 remainingin the half. A three-pointer by senior guard Ali Carter expanded the ASU leadto 34-18 at the break as the Lady Indians held the Jackrabbits to 22 percentshooting from the floor in the opening period.

A pair of free throws by ASU senior guard Rudy Sims extended the ASUlead to 21 points at 45-24 with 14:23 remaining, and the Jackrabbits did notget within 12 points in the remainder of the game.

“Up until about four minutes left in the game, I'm still scared to death ofVogel,” Boyer said. “This player can flat out score. What shocks me so muchis that she didn't take that many attempts, but I give our players credit and theyswung to her. But, she was very unselfish. She distributed the ball and madesome good decisions, but the bottom line is her teammates have to make theshots and they did not do that tonight.”

In addition to the double figure night from Davie and Sims, the LadyIndians also got six points from Ali Carter, four from Jazmine Taylor, threefrom Lyndsay Schlup, two from Ashley Anderson and one point from CarolineStarr.

“It was a great win for these players. It was a hard-fought win,” said ASUHead Coach Brian Boyer. “I don’t know where to start. I’m so proud of theseplayers. It will be surprising the rest of the year if we see a game that was thisphysical and at times just downright wild.

“The players didn’t shy away from it. They had fun with it and handled itwell. The execution was good to get the lead. From the the six-minute mark tothe two-and-a half mark, we really got rattled, but from the two-and-a-halfminute mark on, we played like a veteran team and played like a team who’scapable of winning a lot of games this year.”

What started out to look like it was shaping up to be a relatively easygame soon turned into a frantic finish as Oklahoma State sliced away a 15-point ASU lead with 6:46 remaining in the game to two with 1:50 left. However, Sims hit two straight jumpers to keep the Lady Indians ahead andOSU had to foul. Caroline Starr and Ali Carter each hit free throws to securethe win.

Oklahoma State struck first with Maria Cordero hitting a layup after bothDavie and Sims missed shots. ASU’s Ashley Anderson scored on a jumper andthe Lady Indians had a quick 6-2 lead. Davie hit seven of her nine shotattempts for 15 points in the first half with Sims grabbing five rebounds.Cordero had 10 at the midway point for the Cowgirls.

“This is a great win,” continued Boyer. “This is a pivotal game for us.With the schedule we play, 6-4 is much better than 5-5. This assures us of awinning record in our non-conference schedule.”

Kelsey Lock added nine points and Caroline Starr had seven for ASU.Cordero ended the night leading OSU with 18 points while Danielle Green had15, Andrea Riley added 13, and Rashidat Sadiq had 11. Sadiq also led witheight boards and Cordero and Riley both added six apiece.

ASU ended the night hitting 50.9 percent from the field while OSU hit37.8 percent.

ASU vs. La.-LafayetteEarl K. Long Gym Dec. 16, 2006 Lafayette, LA

LAFAYETTE, La., (12-16-2006) - Arkansas State senior guard RudySims recorded the first triple-double in the history of the ASU women's bas-ketball program, sparking the Lady Indians to a 65-58 overtime victory overthe Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (8-4, 1-1) Saturday night at Earl K.Long Gym. The game was the Sun Belt Conference opener for ASU, andboosted the Lady Indians to 7-4 overall on the season.

Sims finished the night with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, over-shadowing the fifth double-double of the season by senior center AdrianneDavie, who finished the game with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Sims' effortwas even more remarkable considering she started the game 0-for-8 from thefloor.

“I have been coaching a lot of years either as an assistant or as a headcoach, and that was my first triple-double to see in person,” said ASU headcoach Brian Boyer. “It is a huge accomplishment, especially because of theway it happened. She was struggling from the field, but she didn't quit. She issuch a great example for young players. When her shot wasn't falling, shefound another way. She got double figure rebounds and double figure assists, and then all of a sudden the shots start falling.”

The Lady Indians rallied from a five-point deficit in the final five minutesof regulation to send the game into overtime. Davie hit a short jumper with1:51 to play in regulation to pull the Lady Indians within a point a 50-49, andsophomore guard Caroline Starr tied the game at 50-50 with a free throw atthe one-minute mark. Arkansas State had an opportunity to win the game inregulation, but Sims' driving shot in the lane with six seconds remaining wasshort of the mark.

Arkansas State dominated the overtime period, scoring the first nine pointto take a 59-50 lead. Sims' steal, layup and free throw with 3:34 to play ignit-ed the ASU run, and was followed by six straight points from Davie, whosefree throw with 1:02 remaining gave ASU its biggest lead of the night at ninepoints.

Louisiana-Lafayette's Sonora Edwards trimmed the Lady Indian lead to59-52 with a jumper at the 52-second mark, but Starr responded with a pair offree throws five seconds later to boost the lead back to nine points and put thegame away.

In the first half, the Lady Indians could not find a rhythm and trailed 27-23 at the break. Arkansas State turned the ball over 15 times in the openingframe, but stayed in striking distance thanks to 13 first-half points from Davie. The Lady Indians suffered a season-high 28 turnovers in the game, but turnedthe ball over just once in the overtime period.

“I think the key to this whole game was that we got to halftime with it stillwithin reach,” said Boyer. “We almost felt like that was a victory within itselfbecause of our turnovers and the offensive rebounds they were getting.”

“By the time we got to the last couple of minutes, and then in overtime, both teams were really exhausted,” added Boyer. “It was just a matter of whowas going to hit the shots, and fortunately for us, they were trying to scorefrom the outside, and when you get tired, you just don't have the legs.Fortunately we were able to get it inside and get to the free throw line, and hitsome key shots when we had to.”

In addition to the double-digit efforts from Sims and Davie, the LadyIndians also got five points and eight rebounds from Lyndsay Schlup, ninepoints from Ali Carter and six from Starr. Ebonie Jefferson and Jazmine Tayloradded two points each, and Brittney Hiles finished the night with a singlepoint. Yolanda Jones led ULL with 22 points, and Onna Charles added 19.
