Two seasons into the Adam Schmitt era, the LSU men's team has made dras-tic strides into rekindling the program's tradition and success. Schmitt and hisstaff hinged heavily upon several underclassmen to step up and deliver

despite little collegiate experience. Consider that in 2005-06, the Tigers managed asmall roster which included nine true freshmen. However, LSU posted it highest pointtotal in seven years at the Southeastern Conference Championships with a seventh-place finish. Freshman swimmer Julius Gloeckner and sophomore diver Niko Dalmanthen went on to earn All-America accolades as the two guided LSU to 40th place atthe NCAA Championships last spring. The Tigers garnered another award when fresh-man Nathan Schreiber was named SEC Men's Freshman Diver of the Year.

Now, this season, the Tigers return all three standouts and 13 letterwinners whojoin eight freshmen and one transfer as the squad looks to eclipse the Top 25 mark.LSU will be tested early by facing arguably its toughest schedule in school history. The Tigers are slated to go up against six nationally ranked teams, beginning with theearliest meet in program history against No. 2 Stanford on Sept. 15. LSU then travels

to defending national champion Auburn on Oct. 6 followed by a home contest versusSEC perennial power Florida on Oct. 19. The Tigers also play host to Florida State andAlabama while finishing the dual-meet schedule on the road at Texas A&M. Schmittbelieves the tough competition is a way of developing a team for the championshipseason that lies ahead.

"We want to bring in and go swim the best competition we can," said Schmitt."If you don't swim the best, you won't become the best. This will definitely help us inthe long run. When we get to the championships, they will be ready to go."

The SEC Diving Championships take place from Feb. 2-4, and the SEC SwimmingChampionships will be held Feb. 7-10. Kentucky hosts both events at the LancasterAquatic Center. Those divers and swimmers who qualify for the NCAAChampionships head to Minneapolis, Minn., March 15-17. LSU is also expected to sendseveral swimmers to the U.S. Swimming National Championships at the end of March, while divers could potentially qualify for the U.S. Diving Open, April 16-22.

FreestyleSprint freestyle should once again be one of the Tigers' strength in 2006-07. LSU returns junior Miko

Malberg, who looks to improve on his school all-time top 10 times in the 50 and 100 free. Malberg hasdeveloped into a solid leader and gives the Tigers a chance at a first-place finish every time he enters thepool. The Tallinn, Estonia, native is once again expected to be a leader in relays as he attempts to reachthe NCAA Championships for the second time in his career.

"It all starts with Miko in the sprint events," said Schmitt. "He has constantly improved during hiscareer, and we expect him to keep making strides."

East Carolina transfer Christoph Lubenau is one of the top Division I transfers this season and is expect-ed to make an immediate impact. Lubenau was the Pirates' highest scorer at the Conference USAChampionships and was second on the squad in the 50 free (20.70). Sophomores Roy Chambers andConner Farber give LSU even more depth in the sprint events. Farber could be the squad's most improvedswimmer in middle distance free events.

"We have a great combination there in Lubenau and Farber," said Schmitt. "Conner is starting to showhimself as a sprint to middle distance freestyler. I think he's developed from a part-time baseball playerto a swimmer now. It is really exciting that in his sophomore year he can take off."

In distance freestyle, LSU may have found the athletes it has been looking for. Freshmen Will Rivers,Sean LeNeave and Nate Telep join the Tigers with lofty expectations. Rivers, a native of Elgin, Texas, wonthe Texas state championship in the 200 and 500 free as a senior. Rivers' mark of 4:27.37 in the 500 freeranked sixth-best among all high school athletes in the nation. Sophomore Julius Gloeckner, who ownsthe second-fastest times in school history in the 500 and 1000 free, will also be a part of distancefreestyle assuming he does not score in the 200 individual medley.

"We have several guys who can score in distance," said Schmitt. "All of them have constantly beenimproving. If Will can score well it will help our team tremendously."

The backstroke begins with Kevin Braud, whotakes the role of a team co-captain in 2006-07.Braud has proven his ability the past two seasonswith solid finals' appearances at the SECChampionships. Last season, he finished eighth inthe 100 back and 13th in the 200 back at SECs andrecorded nine wins in dual-meet competition. Thejunior ranks third in school history in both the 100(48.49) and 200 (1:45.76) back, and he could be onthe cusp of shattering the school records of EvanMartinec set in 2004. Braud has already securedU.S. Olympic Trial qualifying marks and has earnedexperience on the national level in U.S.Championship competition.

"We look forward to Kevin having another greatyear," said Schmitt. "He is leader on this team. Ourscoring efforts in backstroke depend on Kevin."

Fellow co-captain Joe Veron, Malberg, and fresh-man Luc Rykosky could see time. Malberg held theTigers' second best time of the season (51.74) in the100 back. Rykosky, who was a standout distancefree swimmer in high school, has shown potential inearly season workouts of competing in backstrokeevents.

There are many possibilities on who looks to beLSU's best scorer in butterfly events, but the Tigersare expected to bring as much depth into the eventas they have had in years. Gloeckner recorded thesixth-fastest time in school history last season inthe 200 fly (1:48.03), an event he also competed inat the NCAA Championships. The sophomore fin-ished 23rd overall and just missed out on earninghonorable mention All-America honors. Gloecknerwas 10th in the 200 fly championship final at theSEC Championships.

Lubenau not only possesses a strength in freeevents, the transfer broke the East Carolina schoolrecord in the 100 fly last season with the 10th-bestclocking in the nation (47.96) at the C-USAChampionships. Lubenau also held the Pirates'fastest 200 fly time of the year (1:51.92).

Chambers posted team top-three times last sea-son in both fly events. Meanwhile, White, Farber,LeNeave and Will Benge could also see action here.

"Sean LeNeave is a utility kind of guy who willswim just about anything," said Schmitt. "I thinkConner Farber could also make an impact here."

LSU will need for someone to step up in breast-stroke events, and the answer could come fromsophomore Chris White, Chambers and freshmanSean LeNeave. White held the Tigers' best 100breaststroke clocking of the season in 2005-06after posting a time of 57.20 in a 20th-place finishat the SEC Championships. White was also secondon the team in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.69),behind former Tiger Matt Coenen who won a U.S.national title last season.

"Chris will be our top breaststroker," saidSchmitt. "Roy Chambers is more of a sprint breast-stroker, and you could possibly see Julius Gloecknerin the event as well."

There were few freshman in the SEC better thanJulius Gloeckner in individual medley events lastseason. Gloeckner did not press to set the LSUrecord in the 400 IM last season, rather he did itconvincingly. The Tigers' 400 IM school record hadbeen held by Nate Thompson in 1995 as a juniorwith a time of 3:51.34. Gloeckner bested that markby nearly two seconds, swimming a time of 3:49.38at the NCAA Championships. He recorded All-America honors with a 15th-place finish at NCAAs,and he took fifth in the championship final at theSEC Championships.

Ask diving coach Doug Shaffer about his currentteam, and he will tell you LSU has something specialthis season. The Tigers' young and talented diversmade great advances in improvement in 2005-06,and the SEC took notice. LSU produced the SECFreshman Diver of the Year for the second consecu-tive season when Nathan Schreiber won the award. No other school in conference history had achievedthat feat since freshman awards began. Schreiberwas a double-finalist at the SEC Championships andnearly qualified for the NCAA Championships with asolid performance at the NCAA Zone B Regional.

"The men's program is stronger and more devel-oped than it has been in a number of years," saidShaffer. "We have had situations in the past wherethe likelihood of us getting one male diver to thenational championships was something we werealways striving for. Now, we are looking at increas-ing that to two men. We are not only stronger andmore experienced, but we are deeper as well."

Niko Dalman picked up where he left off from hisfreshman campaign. After being named SECFreshman Diver of the Year in 2004-05, Dalmanrecorded the second All-America honor of his careerwith a 12th-place finish in the platform at NCAAs(289.35). He recorded a career-high, six-dive 3-meter total at Zones when he placed third (672.75).The Auburn, Wash., native collected six victories indual-meet competition.

Senior Andrew Keane returns for his final season, and his strength continues to be in platform. Keanewas the Tigers' highest scorer in the platform at theZone B Regional recording a mark of 542.85 in aninth-place finish. LSU's diving depth should cer-tainly allow the team to score well at the SEC andNCAA Championships.
