Part 3: Characterisation

Nelson Mandela wrote an autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. As a teenager, he met an

old man called Chief Zwelibhangile Joyi. Mr Mandela manages to create a vivid picture of

this great narrator of historical events in his book.

The author creates a vivid image of Chief Joyi.

He uses adjectives and imagery to describe what he looks like.

He describes his actions using strong verbs.

He reports what Chief Joyi says.

How? How? How?

Ancient, wise, fearless, caring.

Chief Joyi flings his spear. He squats down at the fire.

The Chief tells stories about all African heroes.

Choose any interesting character from your novel to complete the author’s characterisation

of him/her in the same way as the example above. Remember, you quote from the text,

therefor no spelling mistakes may be made!

The characterisation of: He is a character in my book titled:

Words and images with which the author describes the character.

Part 4: Writing a book review

No two book reviews look the same. Read this book review that was written by a 13-year-old

girl.

(Start with the title and the name of the

author.)

(Tell something about the story. Use the

present tense. Don’t use any slang.)

(Tell more about your personal

experience of the book.)

(Underline titles of books. Conclude the

review with your honest opinion.)

Now write a book review about the novel you have read. Remember to follow the writing

process: Planning – 1st draft – Proofreading – Editing – Final draft. Your review should have

a word count of 110 – 120.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer Artemis Fowl is a criminal mastermind. He tries to force Holly, a fairy-elf, to help him with some personal problems. However, it is not so easy to get Holly on his side. As a 13-year-old reader, I found the different personalities of the characters the best part of the book. Every fairy, pixie, sprite, elf and human has his or her own personality and glitches. Not everyone will identify with Artemis, though. My favourite characters are Holly, the fighting elf; Butler, Artemis’s personal bodyguard; and Mulch, a dwarf with a passion for digging. The story is original, the writing style is gripping and the characters are fascinating. Artemis Fowl is one of the best books I have ever read.

STAGE 3: SPEAKING

Notes:

# This is a prepared speech about the novel you have read. This means NO reading it from

notes!

# You may however, use cue cards with key words.

# Make use of visual elements to enhance your presentation, e.g. drawings, pictures of

characters and different settings how you interpret them, photograph/s of the author, etc.

# Use your research sources from stage 1.

# Use the information you gathered in stage 2.

# Your presentation must be structured in the following sequence:

Introduction: Title and author. Plot in short.

Body: Plot in full. Meet characters and make sure audience can identify with them.

Conclusion: Own experience of book and recommendations.

# Time factor: 2 – 4 minutes.

# All in all, tie all loose ends by using what you have accumulated in stages 1 and 2 and

deliver a lively presentation to a receptive audience! You want everybody listening to you to

enjoy what you say!
