October 24-Nov. 11 State Fair, Shreveport

If you are interested in showing livestock, don’t forget to join 4-H at your school as soon as possible when school begins. Be sure to enroll yourself in your specific livestock project. Even though you were a member this past school year and were enrolled in livestock, you MUST fill out another enrollment card and choose your livestock project again!

If you check off a livestock project on your enrollment card, but do not receive a newsletter from this point forward; if you have a change of address shortly after you turn your enrollment card in or if you know of a 1st time 4-H member who may not receive the news-letter, but would like to participate in 4-H Livestock Shows, please contact the 4-H office immediately.

Searching for Livestock Exhibitors As our 4-H year begins, some members make plans to raise and show livestock projects. If you are one of these, there are several things you must do:

1. When completing the 4-H Enrollment Card, be sure to mark the appropriate livestock project (beef, sheep, horse, etc.). This will put you on the livestock/horse mailing list.

2. Parents of new exhibitors must also contact Mr. Charles at the 4-H office (291-7090) to discuss the 4-H livestock program and must attend one of the meetings scheduled for new exhibitors.

3. First year exhibitor meeting for livestock is scheduled for Mon-day, September 24, 2018 at 6 PM at the 4-H office (beef, dairy, sheep, goat, swine & poultry). Rabbit exhibitors do not attend this meeting. First year horse exhibitors meeting will be held in March.

LSU Market and Commercial Animal Validation is just around the corner. All market and commercial animals are required to be validated in order to be exhibited in the Parish, District, and State LSU Livestock Shows. Animals will be tagged, DNA tested, and classified (preliminary for entries).

Validation kits are $5.00. They are to be picked up at our office. Payment is due once DNA hair samples are collected and the kit is returned. Checks must be made payable to “Lafayette 4-H Foundation” at $5.00 per kit per animal.

This year instead of hosting group validations at Blackham Coliseum, please call the office at 291-7090 to schedule an appointment if you need help validating and tagging your animal. One of our agents will come to you..

All animals must be tagged and DNA samples collected and turned into the 4-H Office prior to the validation deadline set by the state:

November 5: Beef & Dairy Commercial Heifers, Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats, and Commercial Does

December 3: Market and Commercial Hogs

Any animal not validated will be ineligible to show at the LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows.

If you have any questions concerning the Validation procedure you are welcome to contact us at 291-7090.
