NOVEMBER LUNCHEON PRESENTATION

Toward Improved Modeling in Turbidite Dep-ositional Systems Case Studies from the

Gulf of Mexico Western Irish Namurian Ba-sin and Alpine Foreland Basin

Jonathan R Rotzien Basin Dynamics

Abstract Exploration and field extension wells drilled in the Gulf of Mexico and other turbidite-dominated depositional systems continue to face key geologic risks including reservoir presence and reservoir deliverability In particular the Paleogene Wilcox Group shows a broad spectrum of lithofacies depositional architecture and reservoir quality over a strati-graphic interval exceeding 6000 ft in the thickest parts of the trend Further a number of industry-sponsored studies have argued that the depositional environment for this group ranges from traditional leveed channels to sandstone-rich lobes that lack distributary channels and conform to the shape of the underlying topography as a braided system to sandstone sheets to sandstone-poor overbank deposits that likely represent deepwater background sedimentation Clearly there is room to enhance the understanding of the stratigraphic architecture and reser-voir characterization of target intervals in this trend

One of the methods to better understand geologic uncertainty in Gulf of Mexico petroleum reservoirs is via the study of global outcrop analogs This presentation features new stratigraphic data from two of the most thoroughly studied and classic deepwater outcrops of the Car-boniferous Ross Formation Western Irish Namurian Basin and the Eo-cene-Oligocene Annot Sandstone Alpine Foreland Basin of southeast France to highlight the architectural complexities and similarities of each system to the Wilcox Group The history of exploration into these outcrops began well over a half century ago and inspired the famous work that led to the identification of Bouma and Lowe division termi-nology Today these systems remain relevant as reservoir analogs for petroleum provinces and will continue to be useful for years as the na-ture of industry challenges evolve Despite decades of research two important themes have not been solved using the deepwater outcrops in Ireland and France Using a core drilled through these outcrops (1) what are the characteristics of in-channel and out-of-channel bedding and how can lateral bed continuity be estimated using a process sedimentology approach and (2) what is the range and variability in deep-water stratigraphic termina-tions and how is this new information applied to understanding strati-graphic traps These questions address reservoir extent and reservoir quality using common core data that would be acquired in a routine drilling program Characterization of high resolution stratigraphic data including grain size sedimentary process bed thickness and bed length from previously unpublished sections in each system reveals the range of solutions to both themes as well as the applicability of the workflow in quantifying geologic risk and uncertainty in modern deepwater drill-ing programs Additionally these results provide valuable insights for assessing petroleum reservoir characterization in comparable siliciclas-tic strata both within the Gulf of Mexico and more generally

Biography Jon R Rotzien is President of Basin Dynamics LLC and Visiting As-sistant Professor at University of Louisiana at Lafayette His expertise is the sedimentology and stratigraphy of deepwater depositional sys-tems basin analysis and source-to-sink sediment transfer Jon aims to solve key challenges in the exploration and production of petroleum including reservoir presence and quality forecasting in frontier basins and reservoir connectivity distribution and deliverability Prior to his present position at Basin Dynamics he was an exploration and apprais-al geoscientist at BP He received a PhD in Geological and Environ-mental Sciences from Stanford University and a BA degree in Geolo-gy from Colorado College He has published peer-reviewed research papers and scientific conference proceedings pertaining to reservoir quality sequence stratigraphy petroleum geology process sedimentol-ogy basin analysis and geophysics

LBOPG Announces End of Grandfathered Application

Acceptance

After nearly three years the Louisiana Board of Professional Ge-oscientists is setting a deadline for the completion of applications begun under the grandfathering period When the board was first established by the Louisiana Legislature applications for grandfa-ther status were accepted during a period between January 1 2013 and January 1 2015 Nearly 2000 applications for grandfa-thering were received during this period Grandfathering allowed those who submitted preliminary applica-tions along with their $200 application fees to be considered for licensing based solely on education work experience and profes-sional references and exempted them from the present certifica-tion testing requirement Most of those who filed during the grandfathering period have completed their applications and have either been granted or denied licensure However many did not take the additional step of beginning an online application and still others began that process but did not complete it Because those who filed paid the $200 fee the board has been reluctant up until recently to put an end date on completing the application process However after three years the board has decided that those remaining grandfathered files should be either completed or abandoned At the regular meeting of LBOPG on October 10 2017 the board voted to set a deadline of December 31 2017 for applicants to complete the process This process includes setting up an application through the online system at LBOPGorg and following the instructions to complete that applicationmdashrequesting transcripts to be sent to the LBOPG office filling out the work experience section of the application and requesting three references who are either already licensed as professional geoscientists or who would be eligible for a license Those who have questions about any step in this process or about their grandfather status with LBOPG should contact Brenda Ma-con at applyLBOPGorg or 225ndash505ndash3766
