PASSING THE BATON
2009 witnessed three very significant transitions in the
University's administration. In March 2009, Chief Olu
Akinkugbe CON, at the end of his tenure as Pro-
Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of Pan-
African University, resigned his appointment.
In his place the Board of Trustees of African
Development Foundation (ADF) – which owns Pan-
African University – appointed Dr. Christopher Kolade
CON as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of
Governing Council.
Prof. Elegido has now become the second Vice-
Chancellor of Pan-African University. The new Vice-
Chancellor is also a professor of Business Ethics at the
Lagos Business School, the graduate business school of
the University. He has a doctorate in Law from the
Universidad de Navarra (Spain). He was one of the
foundation members of staff of the Lagos Business
School in 1991 and served as Dean of the LBS from
2005 to 2009.
In February 2009, Prof. Pat Utomi resigned from the
Governing Council and Dr. Enase Okonedo was
appointed to the Governing Council in May 2009. There
were also two new appointments to the University
Management Council – that of Dr. Okonedo in July 2009 In June 2009, the Dean of the Lagos Business School and Mr. Chidi Awagu in November 2009.(LBS), Prof. Juan Manuel Elegido became the Deputy
Vice-Chancellor. In his place, another long time
member of the LBS staff, Dr. Enase Okonedo became
the Dean of LBS.
On the 31st of December 2009, Prof. Albert Alos
resigned his appointment as Vice-Chancellor. His
voluntary resignation was accepted by the Board of
Trustees of ADF. Prof. Alos' leadership had spanned 17
years first as the Director-General of Lagos Business
School, then as Dean of the School and finally as Vice-
Chancellor of the University.

The University has now created a Department of
University Development. This unit will be responsible
for the major fundraising efforts of the University. The
department is headed by Mr. Gabriel Diejomaoh who
was named director. Prior to his appointment, Mr.
Diejomaoh served as Director of Development at Lagos

LAUNCH OF NEW CENTRE
A new centre at Lagos Business School focusing on the
research and teaching of corporate social responsibility
(CSR), corporate governance, work-family balance,
business ethics and other issues related to CSR was
launched on 14th April, 2010. The take-off of the Centre
is being made possible by a five year grant from Etisalat
Nigeria Ltd. This is an important opportunity for LBS to
strengthen its research and teaching in fields allied to
CSR, areas in which it is already well known for its
research and teaching. The centre to be known as the
Etisalat Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility is
headed by its Director, Mr. Chris Ogbechie, a member
of the LBS faculty.

NEW PROGRAMMES
Social Sector Management (SSM) Programme
This is a 30-day programme (spread over 5 months)
created with the objective of contributing to the
development of the non-profit sector. It exposes
participants to important functional areas of managing
nonprofits and social enterprise such as proposal
writing, fund raising, mobilizing resources, managing
projects, building credibility, etc.
SSM is being supported by the Transformational
Leadership Programme (TLP), a project of the Coca-
Cola Africa Foundation through the Africa America
Institute. Over a period of three years, scholarships will
be awarded to 120 qualified Nigerians, majority of who
will attend the SSM. It started in September 2009 and Venture in Enterprise & Management Programme has graduated 60 participants since then. (VIEMP)
This is a one week programme aimed at exposing
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to
entrepreneurship, management, values and corporate
social responsibility. EDS collaborated with Junior
Achievement of Nigeria (JAN), Chevron and Accenture
Nigeria to bring the VIEMP to NYSC members during the
session. A hundred Nigerian graduates from different
disciplines (Engineering, Medicine, Management, etc)
were selected. The importance of the programme lies
in the fact that the Corp members were at the
crossroad of making career decision.
Essential Management Skills (EMS)
This is a 14-day course (spread over 4 months) designed
to improve the effectiveness of line managers and team
leaders in small and medium scale enterprises. The
programme is modular and is structured to enable
participants the choice of modules they consider
important for their functional needs. EMS was
designed using largely the Business Edge methodology
(by International Finance Corporation) and it focuses
on four key areas: Effective Sales Management;
Customer Service Management; Personal Productivity
and Financial & Operations Management. A highly
participant-centred programme, EMS has been
delivered to about 96 participants during the period.

2009, EDS commissioned an impact study of the CEM
programme on its participants.

which was carried out by an independent consultant.
The study revealed a number of increases in relevant
key performance indicators (KPIs) such as turnover,
