At Our Parish

The Vineyard

At each Eucharistic Celebration we pray that God receive the wine we offer “fruit of the vine and work of human hands”. The readings today reflect on God: loving and cherishing and providing for us and our response, the work of our hands. The depth of God’s love is de-scribed in the attention, hard work and care of the vineyard (first reading and Gospel). The vineyard in Jewish scripture is the house of Israel—God’s people. There is no doubting God’s loving care. The house of Israel and the people of God are in a privileged position of knowing God’s tender care. Isaiah expresses in a poem this tenderness of God toward a people who are his “cherished plant”. The vineyard failed so there is indictment of sin an a proclaiming of judgment. Here the vineyard that God loved dearly is itself unfaithful. In the gospel the vineyard is fruitful but the stewards entrusted with its harvest are evil. Because of God’s tender care for the vineyard treachery cannot be tolerated. So the vineyard will be entrusted to those who will carry out God’s plan and bear abundant fruit. Sometimes we fight against doing “what I want” and rebelling against God’s plan. God is always looking out for our best interest even when it requires “tough” love. The “work of human hands” - the response to the tender love of God—is expressed in Paul’s letter to the Philippians (second reading). The real fruit of the vineyard of the Lord is ex-pressed in righteous living. Paul advocates thinking good things and doing good deeds. Paul lists these fruits of truth, honor, justice, purity, beauty (loveliness), graciousness, etc. God Bless, Father Delahunty

BEARING THE RIGHT KIND OF FRUIT Today’s readings focus our attention on vineyards. Isaiah’s song concerning his friend’s vineyard begins with inspiring and poetic images of an idyllic vineyard where the choicest harvest is expected. Instead, the vineyard yields wild grapes, which causes the owner to abandon it. The psalmist cries out to God, asking that God once again take care of the vineyard, which is the house of Israel. The parable told in today’s Gospel offers a stern warning that those who commit treachery in the hopes of attaining personal wealth will be “put . . . to a wretched death” (Matthew 21:41). Jesus warns his listeners not to act like the murderous tenants in the vineyard. Instead he exhorts them to produce the kind of fruit that will lead them to the kingdom of God.
