Globally renown Sports Centre is the heart of the Salpausselkä Ski Games. The Sports Centre includes ski jumps, a skiing stadium, Restaurant Voitto, a large event hall, a trade fair hall, Lahti Hall, an ice stadium, the Ski Museum, a central sports field and an area for biathlon. In the the summertime they are used as mountain biking and outdoor exercising routes.

that was gathered and arranged by glaciers. An 8 km long hiking trail runs through the island of Kelvenne and is indicated with blue marks. There are also several campfire sites along the route. The coasts of Kelvenne can easily be reached in winter on skis or on tour skates.

Sibelius Hall Opened in 2000, Congress and Concert Centre Sibelius Hall is the largest pub-lic wooden building built in Finland in the past hundred years. The concert hall has unique acoustics. The hall seats 1250 people, and it is the venue for both classical and contempo-rary concerts. The Sibelius Hall was designed

Hollola Medieval Stone Church The medi-eval stone church of Hollola, which was originally the catholic church of Pyhä Maria (Holy Mary) is one of the most important medieval monu-ments in the Lahti region. The church seats 550 worshippers, and it is the third largest medi-eval church in Finland that is still in regular use by a congregation. The stone church is part of the Tampere Diocese, and was completed in its current form between 1495 and 1510. It is very well known for its well-kept wooden sculptures. There is a neoclassical bell tower designed by Carl Ludwig Engel and built between 1829 and 1831 to the south of the church.

Church of the Cross This church designed by academician Alvar Aalto is the main church in the City of Lahti. Built in 1978, the simplified church's exterior face opening to the market-place is dominated by a large cross consisting of 52 windows, one for each week of the year. The Church Park includes Wäinö Aaltonen's sculp-ture Vapauden hengetär (Spirit of Freedom). Open from Mon–Sun 9–15 and also at other times based on an agreement. Tel. +358 (0)3 891 290.

Lahti City Hall Designed by Eliel Saarinen, the Lahti City Hall was built in 1912 and completely restored in 1985. There is lunch restaurant Tyrmä (Dungeon) on the basement floor. Guided tours are available on order, Tel. +358 (0)3 734 9792. Vääksy Canal Asikkala is located on both sides of two lakes (Lake Päijänne and Lake Vesi-järvi). At the Vääksy Canal, you can stop and see locking and enjoy the sunny summer days. The structure of the parish, charming little vil-lages and versatile services make Asikkala a memorable place. Asikkala is a combination of peaceful nature and modern services. This is why many summer residents have permanently moved to Asikkala.

Orimattila Art Museum presents a collec-tion of both Finnish and foreign art by Ilmari Wall-Hakala, collected during the 1800s and 1900s, includes 173 paintings and sketches and 41 sculptures and etching plates. Water organ A musical fountain in Pikku-Vesi-järvi pond. Music from movies, musicals and other well-known classics. The show consists of music and spectacular water jets. Water Organ from October to late November every day at 7 pm. The show lasts for around twenty minutes.

Winters in the region are full of events rang-ing from the Finlandia Skiing Event via the Chil-dren's Winter Olympics to snowboarding event Stars of Stadium.

The winter culminates in the Salpausselkä Ski Games in early March. The Ski Games bring a huge number of sports enthusiasts to the Sports Cen-tre each year. You can also ski, ice skate, snowshoe and do slalom from early winter until the spring.

The family event, Stars of the Stadium, will be arranged on the parking lot of the Lahti Fair Centre on 6.12., the Finnish Independence Day. In addition to snowboarding competitions, the event consists of music, Stunt Freaks motorcy-cle show as well as plenty of other programme and top artists for children and parents alike. The event is open from noon to 6 p.m. Stars of the Stadium on 6.12.

Children's winter olympics Children’s Win-ter Olympics will be held for the 19th time at the Lahti Sporting Centre. At the family event, children are invited to try out different skiing styles and to enjoy other fun things on the snow. 18.1.2015.

The Lahti region is a paradise for winter lovers. The ridges of Salpausselkä guarantee a real winter with snow and frozen lakes. Here you can go skiing, skating, snowshoeing and ski downhill as soon as the snow fall until well into the spring. and, if the outdoor becomes boring, you might want to stop by the Lahti Symphony orchestra's Thursday concerts or enjoy the program of the Sibelius Hall or a theatre.

The first Finnish Championships of Winter Triathlon will be arranged in Lahti in February. The speedy triathlon event consists of 5 km of snowshoeing, 12 km of ice skating and 8 km of ski-ing. The event will be arranged on 4.2.

Finlandia Ski Marathon The Finlandia Ski Mar-athon was held for the first time in Hämeenlinna, Lahti in 1974. The first marathon was attended by over a thousand skiers. One could see on the tracks Olympic champions and other famous figures of the times. The 42nd Finlandia Ski Marathon will be held on 21.–22.2.2015.The distance will be 50 km.

Salpausselkä Ski Games In 2015, the Ski Games will consist of eight FIS Nordic World Ski Cham-pionships events: women's 10 km cross-country skiing (traditional style), men's 15 km cross-coun-try skiing (traditional style), women's and men's sprints (skate skiing style), Nordic combined team sprint, a regular Nordic combined event, Satur-day night's team ski jumping competition and Sunday's ski jumping competition in the largest ski jump Suurmäki. In 2015 the games will take place 5.3.–8.3.

Messilä full of events There will be all kind of activities in the Snow Centre Messilä throughout the winter. The season is filled with various hillside events from SuomiSlalom tournaments to larger skiing tours. Slalom skiers and skateboarders will gather for the season’s Friday Night Fever events.

Arctic hysteria at Padasjoki A weekend-long event Arctic Hysteria gathers enthusiasts of avi-ation and winter sports to the dock of Padasjoki, on the icy cover of Päijänne. The event that takes place during spring presents different sports from parasailing, hang-gliding, paragliding, gliding, and flight with motor vehicles. According to the web-site of Padasjoki Aviation Club: "Everyone – from water polo players to kite flyers – are more than welcome to joint the fun”.

Postihiihto, which includes a number of route options. The ski tracks pass through the Päijänne national park's landscape from island to island.

Ice swimming will keep you alert all day long. There are three places in Lahti where you can dip into an icy lake: at Mukkula, Mytäjäinen and Joutjärvi.

Skiing fun Forward, even if it snows like there is no tomorrow! This old Finnish saying is espe-cially well suited for the Lahti region. There are almost 170 kilometres of lighted and unlighted ski-ing tracks in Lahti alone, of which around 145 kil-ometres are part of the Salpausselkä ridge track network. You can start skiing on the tracks used in the Finlandia Skiing Event and the Salpausselkä Ski Games right from the yard of Messilä Manor. There are a total of 70 kilometres of uninterrupted tracks, of which around 20 kilometres are lighted. You can take a leisurely skiing trip to Pirunpesä (the Devil’s Nest), for example. There is a place to build a fire close to the natural formation.

Roasting sausages at a lean-to There are sev-eral lean-tos in the Lahti region. You can ski or walk there to have a packed lunch or make soot pot coffee, if you like. The lean-tos are open to anyone who abides by the Finnish everyman’s rights. All those who use a lean-to must ensure that the surroundings stay clean.

Fascinating slalom Slalom, Telemark skiing, snowboarding and traditional cross-country ski-ing – Messilä with its ten slopes and several snow events is the largest and most popular skiing cen-tre in southern Finland. You can also drop by one of Messilä’s restaurants to have a cup of hot choc-olate or a tasty lunch.

Snowmobiling, snowshoeing... The versa-tile terrain of Messilä offers the opportunity to practice many other sports apart from slalom – ranging from ice fishing to trek skating. Camping Messilä on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi is the meet-ing point for snowmobilers in the wintertime. A

WWF Finland aims at making Finland the first state in the world where only sustaina-bly caught and produced fish is sold by the end of 2015. WWF's fish guide clas-sifies fish based on their sustainability

– i.e. how the fish is being caught and how large the population is – using the traffic light principle. Some of the sus-tainable species on the list are perch, pike, pike perch, bream and the autumn delicacy, crayfish. All of these can be caught in Päijät-Häme. So let's grab a fishing rod and get out there!

In addition to the snowmobiling route, the area includes wonderful skiing routes. There are around sixty kilometres of regularly maintained skiing tracks. If you do not consider that sufficient, you can always ski on the ice of the lake when the late winter sun shines. A suitable trip for a Sun-day afternoon starts at the Messilä Camping shore from where you can ski to Enonsaari Island, enjoy the wintry nature and roast some sausages at a lean-to. If you do not like skiing, you can also enjoy the scenery on snowshoes. Just put an auger into your backpack, and you can catch your lunch from the lake yourself!

Under the spell of ice fishing Vesijärvi and Päijänne are filled with fish. Here it's definitely worthwhile to try fishing even in winter. Burbot is a delicacy especially in late winter. If you get really lucky, the burbot will be full of fish roe. Then you'd just have to cook some blinis and the feast may begin. Ice fishing does not require a fishing licence.

New year, new tricksIn the New Year's Eve we celebrate the past year's end and the beginning of a new one. Some of us spend it in a fine restaurant, others spend the year's last hours in a concert or an opera. Perhaps the nicest way, however, is to celebrate the begin-ning of a new year with friends while enjoying good food and drinks.

When the old year finally becomes the new, we'll open a bottle of sparkling wine, make our New Year's resolutions and watch fireworks.

A few practical tips for the new year: if you get up early on the first day of the year, you will stay active throughout the year, and if you sleep late, you will be suffering from sleepiness throughout the year. Children will behave well throughout the year if they are not scolded on the New Year's Day. And if the first visitor of the new year is a man, it will be a good year; a woman, in turn, predicts misfortune.

They are part of the orig-inal decoration.

A drink worthy of the man Kokomo Tikibar is both a cocktail bar and a club. Kokomo's list of cocktails is extensive, its interior design is that of an authentic tiki bar and the music suits the atmosphere. The word tiki comes from Polyne-sian mythology where tiki was the first man. Tiki also reflects a specific culture and lifestyle. The essential element of this culture is enjoying life's small and great pleasures – preferably with a deli-cious drink in hand.

The Restaurant Möysä welcomes you with a roof terrace constructed on top of an old Esso gas station's canopy. "Mösse" is new for concert goers but it is especially suitable for a more adult taste as the gig list also includes less known top artists.

Amazulu offers South African atmospheres in the centre of Lahti. On Friday evenings it often offers live music.

Brygga Citybar serves you in downtown Lahti. It is known for Finnish small breweries, an extensive selection, live music and warm-hearted service. Beer Restaurant Metro has a huge selection of more than 200 beers. The ground floor of the res-taurant houses a jazz club where you can hear live jazz. Metro is on Lanu Square in downtown Lahti.

Triennale+ The very best of graphic design can be seen at the Triennale+ exhibition of Lahti His-torical Museum. The exhibition, which is part of an international poster triennale, offers a versa-tile selection of works from experienced graphic

Markus Henttonen & Kim Simonsson Lahti Art Museum's autumn exhibition is a joint exhi-bition of photographer Markus Henttonen and

Ruins of the Church of St. Lawrence The Church of St. Lawrence in Hämeenkoski was built in the late 15th or early 16th century. The church was used as a place of worship until the 17th century. Studies have shown that the church is almost unique among the 101 medieval stone churches in Finland: it was an octagonal church.The Church of St. Lawrence is a rare medieval site in Finland. Its history can only be surveyed by means of further archeological studies.

Among other things, the Orimattila Art Museum includes the collections of the Ilmari and Toini Wall-Hakala Art Foundation, as well as the exhibition "Erkkos from Orimat-tila" presenting the life of brothers J.H., Eero and Rudolf Elias Erkko. Ilmari Wall-Hakala's collection of the art of the 1800s and 1900s includes 173 paintings and drawings, 41 sculp-tures and etched plates. Among other things, the collection includes paintings by Akseli Gallén-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt, Pekka Halonen and Helene Schjärfbäck.

Päijännetalo and Leisure Fishing Museum Päijännetalo displays, among other things, the history of fishing starting from the Stone Age to the present day, the evolution of Rapala from a fishing hut to a company of worldwide fame, live fishes as well as freshwater and signal cray-fishes of Päijänne, and a presentation of the Päi-jänne Water Tunnel.

Orimattila Local History Museum The Local History Museum located right in the centre of Orimattila is a farmhouse museum, whose nine different buildings feature objects related to everyday life in the farmhouse in the 1800s and early 1900s.

The Lahti bakery spe-cialises in rye bread, and the well-known Oulu-lainen rye bread, Jälkiuunileipä, was created in Lahti after the wars.

Washing the food down Beverages made from the Salpausselkä groundwater by Hartwall are excellent with food. Genuine local beverages are also available at Brewery & Distillery Teerenpeli. You can taste berry wines made from the farm’s own berries at Vineyard Pihamaa. The farm cultivates all sorts of plants, such as strawberry, raspberry and currants.

Meronen Maatila-Liha farm store Eggs by Pynnönen, bread by Salminen, cheeses from Mäkelän Tilajuustola, smoked products from own smoking oven and self-made sausages. These and other delicacies can be purchased from the Merosen Maatila-Liha farm store. The main part of the products are from their own pigs.

Restaurant on the lakeshoreCasseli, nestling close to the Sibelius Hall on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi, is a high-quality dining and social res-taurant with its own distinctive atmosphere. It stands on the site of the old Lahti Glass Factory.

The impressive restaurant building was con-structed in 1999, but its architectural style is the same as in the Glass Factory of the 1920s. The res-taurant gives splendid views straight onto Lake Vesi-järvi. Its large windows integrate the winter landscape into the dining experience.

On weekdays, Casseli serves á la carte lunch and a delicious buffet lunch. In its range of dishes, inter-national cuisine meets up with traditional Finnish culinary art. Jean Sibelius 150 yearsThe year 2015 will be an anniversary year of the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957). On 8 December 2015, it will be 150 years from the birth of the master. Symphony Lahti will celebrate the anniversary year by organising a larger-scale International Sibelius Festival than normally. During the festival week, Sibelius Hall will house not only Symphony Lahti itself but also the BBC Symphony Orchestra of London

Lahti passenger Harbour has been called the public living room of Lahti. it is the stage of many events in the summer and winter. in the wintertime, Lake vesijärvi becomes the townspeople’s own outdoor sports centre: people ice fish, skate, trip skate and ski on the ice. you can also see ice surfers when it is windy.

Scent of coffee all year round She old store-house buildings at the Passenger Harbour house several nice cafés. You can try the home-baked tasty delicacies of Café Kariranta in the old train station building. Café Kariranta’s famous cinna-mon buns are guaranteed to be the largest in Lahti. The harbour cafés are open all year round.

Restaurant Casseli Casseli is a high-class di ning restaurant right next to the Sibelius Hall. The restaurant offers a great view of Lake Vesijärvi. The menu and matching wine list are renewed three times per year.

Wood architecture at Vesijärvi Passenger Harbour The surroundings of the Lahti Pas-senger Harbour is a Mecca for wood architec-ture enthusiasts. A complete wood arc hitecture park is being constructed close to the Sibelius Hall. The latest site is Café Piano Pavilion right at the shoreline. The harbour area also includes two other sites of the themed park: a lighted bus stop designed by Japanese Kengo Kuma and a wooden spiral designed by Australian Richard Leplastier.

Sibelius Hall The window’s of Lahti’s pride, the flagship of modern Finnish wood construction, Congress and Concert Centre Sibelius Hall spar-kle right next to Lake Vesijärvi. The heart of the house, the tall Forest Hall, combines the large music hall building to the Carpentry Factory dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. The renovated lakeside hall hou ses a pleasant restaurant.

Piano Pavilion The flagship of the wood archi-tecture park, Café Piano Pavilion was designed by architect Gert Wingårdh. The stunningly beau-tiful café manufactured from wood and glass is partially on top of the lake at the Lahti Passen-ger Harbour. Piano Pavilion’s doors are open daily during the summer, starting on May 1st.

Wood design at ProPuu ProPuu Association of Lahti was established in 1997. It is a guild and meeting place for cabinet makers, designers and other wood sector professionals. ProPuu is located in Tikkula, a former matchstick fac-tory at the Lahti Passenger Harbour. The won-derful building houses the association’s gallery, store, offices, designers’ workspaces and a car-penter’s shop.

Lanu Sculpture Park The sculpture park of art-ist and professor Olavi Lanu is located within a walking distance from the Passenger Harbour in the Kariniemi Park. Twelve human figures man-ufactured from reinforced concrete have been placed in the wonderful lakeside nature. Lanu Sculpture park

When are we going ice skating? There are plenty of skiing tracks and tobogganing hills, and there's no shortage of ice rinks either. There is at least one ice rink in all of the region's munici-palities, which means that there are dozens of rinks! And don't forget the lakes – you can also skate on natural ice. Just grab a picnic lunch and head for the lake.

Skating, skiing, snowboarding Messilä is located in Hollola, approximately eight kilometres from Lahti. At wintertime, slalom skiers, snow-boarders and Telemark skiers storm to the biggest slopes in southern Finland. There is also a sepa-rate slope for children. Messilä includes a skiing school and a ski rental and servicing point. There are a street and a half-pipe for snowboarders.

Things to do for kidsSkiing is fun! The Ski Museum located in the Sports Centre at the foot of the three magnifi-cent ski jumps offers wintry activities indoors. In addition to versatile exhibitions, the museum includes a popular section, the activity section where children can try their wings in a safe way in a ski jumping simulator, for example. You can also test your skills in other winter sports: there is an indoor skiing track and a biathlon shooting range.

Horse riding The Lahti area also has beauti-ful landscapes for horse riding. The Stable of Messilä Manor, among others, organises horse riding courses for riders of all levels and ages year-round. In addition to traditional riding, in the Lahti area you can also enjoy riding treks on Icelandic horses. The treks are suitable both for


horse riders and for those who are interested in hiking in the wild. Icelandic horses with their small size and strength are excellent for cross-country riding.

Climbing for the entire family! In Lahti at YogaROCKS, you can try out how high you can climb a wall. There are several climbing walls for beginners and more skilled climbers at Yoga-ROCKS. Bouldering is a challenging and fun way of climbing that is becoming more and more pop-ular. The climbers do not use any safety harnesses; instead, safety is ensured by placing thick pad-ding underneath the wall. Wall climbing is a sport suitable for children and adults alike. If you have not climbed before, an instructor will show you the ropes.

The Christmas Wonderland introduces local sports clubs and the activity of organisations, and inspires people to move. The target group of this free event consists of families, children and all people young at heart. The outdoor event is organised as a Christmas trail circling around the ski jumping hills of Lahti's Sports Centre. The event is free of charge. Christmas Land on 1 December 2014 from 5 to 7 pm at the Lahti Sports Centre.

The Lahti Children's Winter Carnival will be held already for the 32th time. The carnival pro-gram offers a wide and varied overview of cul-tural skills of the children from the Päijät-Häme region. There will be music, theatre, dance, work-shops, movies and a lot of other nice activities

Things to do for kids

did you know? The Laune Central Park of more than ten hectares has been constructed close to the entrance to the city on the fields of Laune. The construction was started a little less than thirty years ago when the City Council decided in its 75th anniversary meeting to build an outdoor living room for children and youth of Lahti. The park has been growing ever since, offering free experiences for all of its guests.

The Family Park at Kaarikatu 26 is a place for the entire family, with experiences both outdoors and indoors. The park includes slides, climbing equip-ment, a traffic town, cottages for hobbies and a fortress. In the wintertime, there are frozen slides and an ice-skating rink in the Family Park. Lahti Bowling Alley Lahti Bowling Alley at the edge of the Laune Central Park offers a new arena for all types of bowling, from children’s birthday par-ties to glow bowling evenings and company bowl-ing excursions to international bowling tournaments.

There are twenty fully renovated alleys.

Parkour in a Park Lahti has invested in parkour by constructing a parkour park to Launo. The park contains climbing frames and various obstacles that can be used for practicing. Parkour is a manoeu-vring discipline, originating from the suburbs of Paris, which is becoming more and more popular amongst the youth.

A tobogganing region! Since the Lahti region is in the Salpausselkä ridge area, we have excellent tobogganing hills. They are everywhere, and the longest and wildest of them all in Lahti is in Laune Family Park. Depending on how much snow there is, the slide is open from December until March.
