Procrastination – what is it and how can I stop it!

We are all familiar with procrastination which is defined as:

noun noun: procrastination; plural noun: procrastinations

1. the action of delaying or postponing something.

"your first tip is to avoid procrastination"

(Oxford Online. 2020)

Some of us are more ‘guilty’ of procrastination than others and this is because it is a learnt habit. Like any other, the more you do something, the more you ‘hardwire’ your brain into doing it again.

Page 2: ,laIl@mpU @pUa « wT@p Um Up @ K Taw I@ mpai Up€¦ · ,laIl@mpU_@pUa_ « wT@p Um Up @_K Taw I@_ mpai Up 9M @lM @]] R@^U]U@l wUpT ilaIl@mpU_@pUa_ wTUIT Um KMRU_MK @m _aq_ ... R pTMlM

Back in the 1950’s Sigmund Freud tried to explain procrastination as the psychoanalytical response to a task as a way of avoiding tasks that would damage the ‘ego’ – so if you avoided the task, then you could never get it wrong! He had a point, when you fail at something it knocks your self-belief & confidence doesn’t it?

Behavioural experts built on this and posited that there was a lack of punishment and reward when it came to procrastinate, and that the introduction of either would help ‘motivate’ an individual to perform a task. Without a consequence, the task would often still be delivered, but perhaps at the last minute and often not to a robust standard.

Repetition creates habit. The more you procrastinate, the more you procrastinate, like a vicious circle, so I am, here to explain why this is and what you could do to break the habit too.

Takeaways from this are:

We procrastinate when we have no clear or valued reward when completing a task. If there is no real consequence or fear of punishment if we do not complete a task, then

we often put it off or delay it. Individuals and teams often put things off that they are worried they might fail at. If the task is unappealing (like your tax return) its on the list but often at the bottom! We don’t think we can handle a specific task; confidence is lacking. We think we have time, postpone it, then panic!

Does this sound familiar yet? It is all down to our motivation to deliver a task.

You are not a bad person; you are not terrible at time management and you are not alone.

Modern theory explains this using algebra – yep, maths!

Please keep reading….

Temporal Motivation Theory (TMT) is a modern approach and states an individual's motivation for a task can be derived with the following formula:

Yikes, I can see you think…

Let me explain.

MOTIVATION is the desire for a particular outcome, so the task we want / need to complete.

EXPECTANCY is the probability of success, so how confident we feel. VALUE is the reward (or punishment) associated with the outcome. IMPULSIVENESS is simply the individual’s sensitivity to delay DELAY is the time to realisation, so how long you think you have!

To see how temporal motivation theory can be applied in an example, consider a student given one month to study for a final exam. The student is given two options—studying and socialising.

Page 3: ,laIl@mpU @pUa « wT@p Um Up @ K Taw I@ mpai Up€¦ · ,laIl@mpU_@pUa_ « wT@p Um Up @_K Taw I@_ mpai Up 9M @lM @]] R@^U]U@l wUpT ilaIl@mpU_@pUa_ wTUIT Um KMRU_MK @m _aq_ ... R pTMlM

The student enjoys socialising but needs to achieve a good grade.

The reward of studying is not immediate thus at the beginning of the student's study period, the motivation to study is lower than the motivation to socialise.

However, as the study period diminishes from several weeks to several days, the motivation to study will surpass the motivation to socialise.

Are you with me?

So how can this help you? Well it depends on if you recognise yourself or some of your behaviours in the following 3 descriptions of procrastinators?

One description is of people who simply have a hard time getting started on a project, or a classic procrastinator.

Another is a person who gets started, but then gets bogged down in details, or a classic perfectionist.

The last is the person who is distractible, i.e., the student who has the paper to do, but decides to go out when a friend calls.

Remember, most people who procrastinate are impulsive; they value what they can have today more than what they can have tomorrow--and long-term goals don't have motivational force. Others have less confidence in themselves, less expectancy that they can actually complete a task.

OKAY so how to solve this?

If you have an ingrained procrastination habit, it’s not easy to change overnight. Try my top tips and start small.

Take five minutes to list out the things “you were going to do tomorrow.”

On a blank sheet of paper, note several important activities you are delaying or have put on hold.

Look at your list—and do one thing on it right now.

Put the energy you’ve been directing toward excuses into the activity you have been avoiding.

Action eliminates anxiety.

Pick a time (today) to work on the list.

If getting started is the hard part for you, set aside a designated time slot, at least 30 minutes, for work specifically on one job, project, or personal goal that you’ve been “leaving until later.”

Page 4: ,laIl@mpU @pUa « wT@p Um Up @ K Taw I@ mpai Up€¦ · ,laIl@mpU_@pUa_ « wT@p Um Up @_K Taw I@_ mpai Up 9M @lM @]] R@^U]U@l wUpT ilaIl@mpU_@pUa_ wTUIT Um KMRU_MK @m _aq_ ... R pTMlM

Quit trying to be perfect.

What counts is quality of effort, not perfect results. Do not let yourself get bogged down with details, just start, get perfect later!

Ask yourself, what is the worst thing that could happen if I did this today?

Do you fear the consequences associated with the action you’ve been avoiding? The worst-case scenario most likely would be a minor inconvenience or a temporary setback.

Imagine how you’ll feel once you do whatever it is you’ve been postponing.

Freedom from anxiety. Freedom from nagging pressures. Freedom from self-doubt. Accomplishing put-off tasks will give you a great boost of confidence and energy.

Give yourself a time limit on the task rather than to complete it.

Commit to doing 30 minutes on a task, then walk away. At least you’ve started it and may find yourself in the flow and crack on after all?

Reward yourself.

Celebrate every step you achieve daily, however small, and seemingly insignificant, they will all start to add up and create a positive change.

Well done for reading this, now get on with that list perhaps???

Social Media Tips June

Creating themes for posts.

You will hear this referred to as strategic social media and where consultants will offer to help you with strategic content to engage your audience and make huge amounts of cash.

For me, strategic content DOES have its place, but I struggle with time to get really into it, and the social media planner reflects my life as a busy mum & businesswoman trying to do it all.

THAT’S SAID, being more strategic CAN be useful. What does this mean?

Well I’m a business coach not a copywriting genius or a marketing guru, so my take will probably be very different to others out there, but for me its about deciding what you want to promote / sell / offer in a specific month and having a theme will all of your content that links to this.

Page 5: ,laIl@mpU @pUa « wT@p Um Up @ K Taw I@ mpai Up€¦ · ,laIl@mpU_@pUa_ « wT@p Um Up @_K Taw I@_ mpai Up 9M @lM @]] R@^U]U@l wUpT ilaIl@mpU_@pUa_ wTUIT Um KMRU_MK @m _aq_ ... R pTMlM

Not an obvious ‘BUY ME TODAY’ message with every post, that will turn people off straight away BUT a theme of content around a specific offer / date / subject can be really helpful.

21st June is Father’s Day.

You may or may not have products or services that relate directly to this, but your theme could be focused on your love for your dad, the fun you had as a child, his influence on you and how other men in your life (if like me you are fatherless & husbandless!) and what you love / like or even don’t like about them!

By keeping the majority of posts themed it makes your focus for the month easier and also links into key events on the calendar…. You can make the content funny, personal, general, about family, fun, memories and also how your business links into this.

If you sell holidays – use favourite family holidays If you are an accountant – talk about how you can de-stress the man in your life by doing his

tax return If you sell cakes – tell us your dad’s favourite recipe If you are a sports therapist – talk about how being a dad keeps you young!

So, the theming or strategy of your content works with the free June planner and can just make your content flow better or relate to what you and your business is about.

Use these ideas in June and see how you go!

Keep reading for the June social media calendar!
