THE CITY

Lake Balaton oers 200km of shoreline dotted with familyresorts on the southern side and welcoming vineyards tothe north. With its green and silky water, the lake isHungary’s favourite summer retreat. However, there’smuch more to do all year around than just lounge aroundat the lakeside. Each waterfront town has its own uniquecharacter, from the cultural centre of Keszthely at thewestern tip to the elegant spa resort of Balatonfüred.

Situated a little over 120 kilometres southwest of Budapest, Lake Balaton stretches out diagonally from thecapital as a kind of lumpy oblong for 77km. The mostinteresting statistic of the lake is its depth, or rather lackof it. The average depth is 3.3m and you have to paddleout a long, long way before the water comes up to yourknees. For this reason, the lake is extremely popular withfamilies with young children.

Lake Balaton also oers a surprising range of entertainment possibilities. While Siófok on the southerncoast attracts the young, party-loving disco crowd andalso oers all around family fun at the annual Coca ColaBeach House, the north bank around Balatonfüred is a littlemore sedate. The northern shore is populated with artistcolonies, the craggy outcrops of Badacsony are coveredwith vineyards and the healing waters are good both fordrinking (Kékkuti) and wallowing (Hévíz).
