Lake County
Lake County is located in the west central part of Colorado, bordered by the Continental Divide. The
county is 384 square miles with an average elevation of 10,200 feet. The county was established in
1861. Lake County was once known for the gold and silver in the early 1800’s. Molybdenum was
recently discovered in Lake County and has become a significant discovery worldwide. Lake County’s
unique history of the mining boon, ghost towns, Doc Holliday and Baby Doe Tabor, as well as the high
peaks and glacial lakes make it a popular destination for tourists.
