1955 GAA: Money raising project of the year was a candy and cookie sale to raise money for mirrors in the girls locker room!

1956 Tumbling Team: Affiliated with the GAA (Girls Athletic Association), newly added to this year and performed at Boys Basketball games

1956 Letterman’s Club: Raised money in fundraisers to pay for half of the football insurance.

1959 GAA: Quote- “GAA gives a chance for girls to enjoy sports they could not play alone, a chance to keep trim and a chance to let off steam! This is GAA year after year!”

Historical Trivia: 1960 Drill Team: 1st time changing from their outside

performance uniforms to a “basketball” type uniform! 1960 GAA: Big “play day” outing was a Swim Trip to Gold Creek

Those girls know how to have fun! 1962 Intramurals: For the boys, intramurals started up this with

activities from handball, soccer, weight lifting and horseshoes! 1962 Pep Staff: Pep Staff led the most notable Pep Assembly to

date before LW’s 50th undefeated football game, with KJR making a radio presentation!

1963 Physical Education: President Kennedy’s speech challenged America’s youth in their physical fitness and LW students were directed to rise above the national average.

1964 Senior Girls: Senior Girls beat Junior Girls in Powder Puff Football Game 6 – 0!

1970 Physical Education: Universal gym was the new equipment added and as quoted was to “harden male muscles”!

1972 Letterman’s Club: Revived this year 1972-73 Physical Education: Handball, lacrosse, advanced

gymnastics, wilderness activities, and leisure activities were added to PE Curriculum broadening and meeting students new interests.

1972 Title IX Passage: Huge impact on programs being offered at LW, with Title IX prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender in educational institutions receiving federal financial assistance

1970 – 1974 Athletics: With the passage of Title IX, these years had many first’s for girls in LW Sports.

Historical Trivia:

1975 Softball: In these initial years of the team at LW, softball games were umpired by LW teachers and staff.

1975 Physical Education: The infamous trampoline is still being used in the LW P.E. curriculum.

1975 Soccer: As soccer had not become an “official” sport at LW for girls, they managed to bring girls together from Redmond, Juanita and Rose Hill Jr. High to form an LW Soccer Team.

1975 – 1979 Physical Education: Boys and Girls P.E. classes were still separate but program variety increased with boys offering “Weight Training and Physiology” and girls offering “Body Conditioning”.

1975 – 1979 Athletics: Continued growth for girls programs with the passage of Title IX:

1991 Girls Basketball: To state for the first time in the history of the school. (Placed 4th in State following year 1992)

1992 Softball: The girls softball team switched from slow pitch to fast pitch softball.

1992 Stadium: New refurbished stadium with new stands, turf, score board with the accompanying theme of “Field of Dreams”!

1993 Athletics: Double shifting at Redmond High School impacted fall team practice areas.

1994 Golf: Another “first”. First girl on golf team(making it co-ed).

2000 – 2004 Student Athletes: The Seattle Thunderbird professional hockey players were enrolled at LW as students during their sport season.

2000 – 2004 Extreme Sports: Many more students showed an interest in the “extreme” sports of snowboarding, skateboarding, rock climbing, martial arts, mountain biking, and wake boarding.

2000 Football: Football team made it to the playoffs for the first time in 10 years!

2000 Girls Basketball: First girls team to play in Holiday Hoop Fest @ Key Arena.

1995 - 1999

Historical Trivia:

1995 Athletics: Freak waxing mistake on gym floor forces PE classes, teams and 1st Pep Assembly out onto Mac Field.

1997 Football Team: Traveled to Osaka, Japan gaining cultural experience and sharing football camaraderie.

1998 Drill Team: Performed their first “Laser Show” during Homecoming (standing tradition since then!)

1998 Boys Tennis: Took Kingco for the first time since 1967.

1998 Football: Joined the new classification of AAAA.

1999 Girls Golf: First year that the girls will have their own separate team and coach.
