Mayor's Notes
241 years ago on July 4th, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was adopted. In celebration of Independence Day, Hudson's fireworks display will begin at dusk on July 2nd at the Lakefront Park over the Saint Croix River (Lakeland Beach will remain open for the display). Stillwater's fireworks display is on July 4th (July 5th, if rain) starting at 10:00 p.m.
It will be a long weekend starting Friday and ending Tuesday full of fireworks, parades, barbecues and family events. Please take a moment to remember our military serving away from home on America's Birthday.
This weekend will also be a busy time for local business "Beanie's at Mau's Landing. " The Council has made some temporary changes to the parking restrictions around the 7th street entrance to the boat launch. See more detailed information on page 2.
The most asked question I've been getting is "When will the bike trail re-open?" Commissioner Gary Kriesel informed me this weekend that it is scheduled to open on after the 4th of July.
The updates to the Water Utility Department are progressing nicely. Water Plant #1 has had the control system replaced. Work on the two water towers and Water Plant #2 are set to follow.
Public Works has been very busy through out the city. Many hours have been spent at Cully Park clearing some trees and brush. The second 40- yard dumpster has been filled and disposed of. Damaged and missing signs have started to been replaced. Please contact the city if you know of any signs that need to be replaced.
We have began looking into moving the city offices back to the Historic City Hall. We will be going out for bids on the remodeling soon. We have decades of old city records to dig through which will be part of the process. We are looking for motivated volunteers to help in the project.
Lakeland is a city with a rich and interesting history. Beginning in August, a resident profile will be included in the newsletter. If you know a Lakeland resident with an interesting story to share, please let us know.
An important reminder to residents: Lakeland Beach closes at 10:00 p.m. every night when the gate is locked and reopens at 8:00 a.m.
Remember to keep up-to-date ID tags on your pets. Spending $5.00 is a much cheaper solution versus having to pick them up at the Woodbury Humane Society. Animal Control Officer Kathi Pelnar will generally call first before taking animals in. For years residents have called me when looking for a lost pet. Usually, I will find the owner or in some cases, re-home if needed. ID tags are the key.
I'm very encouraged with the progress that Lakeland is making.

TEMPORARY EVENT PARKING NOTICE
On June 20, 2017 the City Council approved temporary event parking for
long-time residents Dottie and Gary Mau, business owners of Beanie’s at
Maui’s Landing, to utilize the parking spaces at the former City Hall
location of 690 Quinnell Avenue North beginning June 31st thru July 4th.
Beanie’s has been operating in Lakeland since setting up shop in 1919,
which has not been with out their fair share of struggles. Nor has the
increase of customers went unnoticed especially by those who live in the
neighborhood. In efforts to minimize traffic and safety issues for all
residents, the council offered and approved a temporary solution to allow
parking at the former City Hall location.
Additionally, the city will post temporary signs around the neighborhood to
ensure the no parking (or stopping) restrictions are heeded by boaters
during the July 4th holiday.

GETTING TO KNOW CITY COUNCIL MEMBER TAMI FAHEY
As the new, appointed, member of the Lakeland City Council, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Tami Fahey. My husband, Kevin, and boys, Jack and Brandon, moved to Lakeland in 2015 after residing in Lake Elmo for 17 years. My background is in accounting and for the last 21 years, I have been working at the family business, Steel Sales in Minneapolis.
The draw for us to move to Lakeland was the beauty of the St. Croix River area. The small town feel so close to a major city is hard to beat. After making the short move, we were happy to discover that the residents here are second to none. We have been blessed with wonderful neighbors who have quickly become good friends. We love boating on the river, biking the trail and walking the dogs through the neighborhood.
Since becoming active on the Council in January, I have learned a lot about how much thought and work goes into making decisions for the city. It is humbling. Lakeland is fortunate to have dedicated, hardworking people looking to better our community. I am happy and proud to have the opportunity to be a part of the Lakeland City Council. There is a lot for me to learn, but I am really enjoying the challenge.
CITY COUNCIL SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT
At the regular city council meeting held on June 20,
2017 city council discussed ways to increase the use of
the Lakeland Beach. Mayor Glasgow stated “the most
expensive park is a park not used by its residents” and
in line with this idea a handful of suggestions were
offered up including; fishing, fire pits and opening the
beach up to dogs.
The city council is requesting input from residents on
what they would like to see at Lakeland Beach in order
to make it a multi-use and purpose beach. Discussion
on the matter will continue at the next regular city
council meeting on July 18, 2017 starting at 6:00 p.m. at
the former City Hall located at 690 Quinnell Ave North.
If you are unable to attend the meeting, but have
comments to share—please forward your written
comments no later than July 9th, including your name
and address, to the City Hall via email to
[email protected] or via mail to 1190 Saint Croix
Trail South. Your comments will be shared with council
and read into the public record on your behalf
(dependent on length may be summarized).

MAKING EVERY DAY EARTH DAY: Closing the Recycling Gap
Earth Day is often about big acts or events, but the best ways to celebrate the Earth is in small ways every day. One way to do this is by filling yourself up—with knowledge. Check out the below list of easy
tips and tricks to get recycling and save even more from ending up in the landfill.
Make it convenient: Put a recycling bin, bag or box. Next to every trash can in your house.
Make it fun: Place a basketball rim above the recycling bin, so you family can slam dunk their
recyclables.
Recycle in the bathroom: Recycle shampoo bottles, plastic containers from wipes, toothpaste boxes,
toilet paper rolls and more.
Recycle in the laundry room: Recycle laundry detergent and fabric softener bottles, cat litter jugs, dryer
sheet boxes and more.

TIPS FROM TANNER
It's that time of year again, when the police station is getting a lot of phone calls from concerned citizens about “orphaned" fawns on their property.
Here are some important things you should know:
When fawns are born and for the first few weeks of their lives, they are not strong enough to keep up with the doe since they are quite unsteady and shaky. The doe will leave them hidden for periods of time and that is when we usually get the phone calls from concerned citizens. The fawns natural instinct is to freeze and attempt to remain hidden from predators while mom goes about her business for the day. The doe is usually never very far away and will ALWAYS return, unless something has happened to her. The best thing to do is to just LEAVE IT ALONE, the doe will return. Even if the fawn was touched by humans the doe will still return for it--it is an urban legend that they will not care for it if touched by humans. Keep in mind the doe will not be able to return when people are hovering around. In very rare cases, such as if a long period of time goes by (several days) and the doe has not returned, the best thing to do is to contact the MN Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at 651-486-9453.

NEW TO THE AREA? OR MOVING OUT OF THE AREA?
THERE MAY BE ONE MORE ITEM YOU NEED TO ADD TO YOUR MOVING CHECKLIST...
Of all the things to do before moving into a new place—notifying important parties is a must-do on the list. Current
or new property owners in the area who are connected to city water must contact the city prior to moving in (or out)
to ensure timely and proper billing.
Before purchasing a home in the area, you may want to verify that the account is current. Any outstanding water bill
will be certified to your property as a special assessment. Certification occurs the month of November each year for
bills more than 45-days past due.
