Meet Murray Blue

Murray Blue is a 19 year old fresh-man from Chicago, Illinois, USA. “I have always been drawn to Japa-nese culture, and I needed a boost to get myself to Japan, and finding LCJ did that for me.”

As this is Murray’s first semester at LCJ, we asked for his first impres-sions of college life at Lakeland. “The professors are young! I like that they are, though. They think on the current times, and they aren’t stuffy. They are really nice, and I get to see that through the small class sizes.”

Another aspect of LCJ that Murray found impressive is the internation-al student body. “I guess I didn’t do my research, because I thought

that everyone would be Japanese. I thought there would be no English-speaking people here. But, there real-ly are a lot of international students, professors and staff! It’s cool because everyone has their own point of view because they are all from different parts of the world.” Murray is one of many new international students com-ing from a variety of different coun-tries. Right now, our students are com-ing from 22 countries! It’s no wonder he was surprised to find he wasn’t the only international student here!

When asked what his goals at LCJ are, Murray answered “I want to know how to do a lot more things. I really want to gain a lot of skills here and take them with me when I leave LCJ. I really want to study Japanese here, too. I really love Japan so far and can see myself living here.”

Meet Jackie Ho

Jackie holds a British passport, is from Hong Kong, and attended the Korean International High School in Hong Kong. Jackie speaks English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Japa-nese. Jackie is LCJ.

When asked to describe LCJ in one word, she couldn’t. “Tiring but amaz-ing. Tough but fun.” These are typi-cal answers from LCJ students, both Japanese and International alike. “I chose LCJ for several reasons. I knew I wanted to study in America, but I also wanted to study Japanese. So after being in Japan for a couple of years, I decided to continue my studies here.”

Jackie found LCJ through her lan-guage school in Tokyo. She did some research and found that LCJ was just what she was looking for! “I was very into it!” she said. “The pro-fessors and small classes are great. The teachers can focus on you and ask you questions using your name.”

Jackie became involved in the Inter-national Club, which is currently the

largest club at LCJ! She also partici-pated in Art Day 2009, as well as the International Festival! “I really en-joyed the festival because I could see everyone in their cultural dress, and we got to make and eat food from all over the world!” With LCJ’s unique blend of students from all corners of the world, it really is a great place to learn about new cultures. “The best thing about LCJ is getting to know people from different countries!”

Jackie plans to continue her studies by majoring in Resort Management at the home campus, Lakeland Col-lege Wisconsin. “It’s nice that there is a direct connection between LCJ and LCW. It makes transferring so much easier.” She is excited to see what it’s like to live in Wisconsin after growing up in a big city and living in Tokyo.

“Overall, LCJ was a good choice. I have no regrets at all! People may think that because LCJ is small that they should just skip it and not try it. But I believe that people can learn more from this school than they can at some of the top universities in Japan.”
