The Southwest Florida WaterManagement District is offering six ways toprepare for holiday meals and parties with-out running up your water bill.
“It is especially important to conservewater during the holidays, as they fall withinour traditional dry season,” said districtspokeswoman Robyn Felix in a release. “Wecan all make a difference by incorporating afew simple tips into our routines.”
During the holidays, water plays a role ineverything from food preparation to theclean-up process. Here’s how to incorporatewater conservation into your holiday prepa-rations:
• Defrost frozen foods in the refrigeratoror the microwave instead of running hotwater over them.
• Rinse vegetables and fruit in a sink orpan filled with water instead of under run-ning water. This water can then be reused towater houseplants. A running faucet can useup to four gallons per minute.
• When washing dishes by hand, fill onesink or basin with soapy water and fill therinsing sink one-third to one-half full. Avoid
letting the water run continuously in therinsing sink.
• Select the proper size pans for cook-ing. Large pans require more cooking waterthan may be necessary.
• Scrape food scraps into the garbagecan or a composting bin rather than rinsingthem into the sink’s garbage disposal, whichuses up to 4.5 gallons of water per minute.
• Run dishwashers only when fullyloaded. Dishwashers use between seven and12 gallons per load.
For more water conservation tips and thecurrent water restrictions, visit the district’swebsite, www.WaterMatters.org/conserva-tion/.
Saving water during the holidays

For anyone planning to travel for the holi-days, it’s never too early to start planning. Thefollowing tips will help ensure arriving ontime to help carve the turkey, open gifts onChristmas morning or bring in a cheerfulNew Year.
Flying for the holidays• Avoid peak travel days by booking
flights at least two days before and afterThanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.
• Secure a nonstop flight or one with thefewest connections and stops.
• Book morning flights, as those tend tohave fewer delays than afternoon departures.
• Check in early for holiday flights — twohours before departure for domestic flightsand three hours before international ones.
• Don’t wrap holiday gifts and place them
in checked luggage. Send them by postal mailin advance of your flight.
Driving for the holidays• Get the vehicle inspected by a qualified
mechanic before travel to make sure brakes, battery, fluid levels, tire pressure, light bulbsand other equipment are all in top workingcondition.
• Pack emergency equipment includingfirst-aid kit, flashlight, blanket, water, snacks, flares, jumper cables, tire chains and icescraper if traveling to cold-weather states.
• Lock valuables and gifts in the cartrunk.
