    ASIA LAKES:

Dozens of significant lakes arefound in Asia. Here we highlight afew on the map and (briefly)describe the three most significantincluding the Caspian Sea, LakeBaikal and the Aral Sea.

Caspian Sea The Caspian Sea, located inwestern Asia on the eastern edgesof Europe, is the largest lake on theplanet. History records that it'scalled a sea because the Romansfound it salty, especially in thesouthern reaches, and the namestuck. Oil and natural gasproduction platforms are repletealong the edges of the sea. Inaddition, large quantities of sturgeon live in its waters, and thecaviar produced from their eggs is avaluable commodity. Fresh waterflows into the sea via the VolgaRiver and Ural River in the north, however, the sea remainssomewhat salty, central andsouthThe meas ured surface area is371,000 sq km (143,244 sq mi),and the maximum depth is at 1025m (3,363 ft). Additional details andmap.

Lake Baikal Lake Baikal is positioned insoutheastern (Siberia) Russia, directly to the north of Mongolia.Recognized as the oldest (stillexisting) freshwater lake on theplanet, it is also measured as thedeepest continental body of waterat 5,315 feet (1,620 m). Inaddition, it is the largest freshwaterlake by volume, containing anastounding 20% of the planet'sfresh water. With a maximum widthof 60 miles (96 km ), Lake Baikal isabout 389 miles (626 km) inlength. Completely surrounded bymountains, over 300 rivers andstreams drain into this massivelake. Detailed map.

Aral Sea Positioned in far-western Asia, justto the east of the Caspian Sea, theAral Sea is located in the countriesof Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. TheAral Sea is disappearing(evaporating) and is today almosttotally polluted by fertilizer runoff, weapon testing residue left here bythe former Soviet Union andcareless industrial projects. Themismanagement of its valuablewaters is consider by many experts

to be one of the world's worstenvironmental disasters. Diversionof the Amu Darya and Syr Daryarivers for irrigation began in 1918,and that action, along with otherfactors have now shrunk the AralSea to almost 60% of its formersize. Over the last few years theoutlook for the northern reaches of the sea have brightened some, butthe lower half is basicallyabandoned and the remainingwestern waters are now predicted tobe gone within a decade. Additionaldetails and map.
