It was noted that the two small aluminum benches were not adequate for large groups using the tennis courts. As a result of this request we now have new concrete picnic tables installed in the area between the tennis courts and the beach volleyball court at LOE. Our local resident, Robert Clay of Troop 13 at Second Baptist Church volunteered to organize and install three round concrete picnic tables and benches to benefit our subdivision and fulfill the requirements of his Eagle Scout Project. This project will benefit residents using the tennis courts, LOE Tennis League, and people who like to play beach volleyball. What started out as a simple project quickly turned into a major undertaking. The tables and benches are made out of cast concrete weigh and about five hundred pounds per set. In order to support and anchor these tables Robert had to mix over twelve hundred pounds of concrete for a solid support base. Further, each piece had to be leveled and glued together with construction adhesive. It took a total of four weekends of work to finish and now we have a place that everyone can enjoy. Robert said that he underestimated several of the details needed to properly install these heavy items but managed to get everything done correctly. Robert would like to thank the LOE Board for their support and also appreciated the helpful comments of our LOE residents that stopped to visit during the work times. REMINDER about multi-colored awnings and covers

As reported in July 2005, only earth-tone colors are allowed for awnings or other fabric outdoor covers (i.e.; tan, brown or green). The coverings that we are speaking of are at the top of the play-structures and visible to the community. All rainbow or multi-colored awnings or other fabric outdoor covers must be changed to earth-tone colors by the end of 2006. If you have a multi-colored awning or cover, please plan to change it to earth tone by that time.

Do you and the kids like to drive around looking at Christmas Lights during the holiday season? For most of us the answer is a resounding YES! What a great way to get everyone in the Holiday Spirit. Plus with gas prices at an all time high you can’t beat the drive when you don’t even have to leave the subdivision. This year, LOE will have a Christmas Lighting Decoration Contest. We hope to have lots of good neighborly competition to give you plenty to look at here at Lakes on Eldridge. We will present awards for three (3) Village Categories. The awards for the decorated homes & yards will be judged on their design, layout and overall fl ow of the decorations. In the past years, LOE residents have done a tremendous job with Christmas Decorations and we look forward to seeing the whole neighborhood sparkle in Holiday Cheer! A team of at least 3 residents headed by our LOE Social Committee will tour LOE during the evening of December 14th to choose the 3 Winners. If you would be interested in being a volunteer judge, please e-mail dsd1951mac.com. Remember, the more judges the better to enjoy the fun. Let’s all get out and “Light up our Neighborhood! Winners will have a Sign placed in their yard showing Best Christmas Decoration 2006. The signs can be displayed until the end of January 2007.

GET READY FOR THECHRISTMAS LIGHTS DECORATING CONTEST

Please note that holiday lights and decorations must not be turned on before Thanksgiving and must be taken down no later than fi fteen (15) days after Christmas. We look forward to seeing your Holiday Spirit and want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed and Happy Holiday Season!

Lakes on EldridgeLOE BOOK CLUB

The LOE Book club meets on the 4th Monday of each month at 7:30 P.M. We try to read a wide variety of material, so if this month’s selection doesn’t appeal to you, maybe next month’s will. Do join us when we tackle a book on which you have comments or opinions. We will again be meeting in various members’ homes, so call or e-mail Celeste Fritz, 713-896-6942, [email protected] for additional information. November 27th - The Devil Wears Prada, by Lauren Weisberger. A delightfully dishy novel about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses. Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job “a million girls would die for.” Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high profi le, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea fi nds herself in an offi ce that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! At every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fi ne-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym. With breathtaking ease, Miranda can turn each and every one of these hip sophisticates into a scared, whimpering child. If you saw the movie and though Meryl Streep was nasty, rumor has it that her character is even worse in the book!! We will not be meeting in December. In January 2007, our selected book is Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris.

Stitch & Chat

All the LOE Stitchers recently came together to help one of our members, Martha McGraw, fi nish her new granddaughter’s baby quilt. Martha recently lost her arm due to cancer. So when little Elie came from California to visit her grandparents, she wanted to meet some of these ladies that lovingly helped fi nish her quilt. Stitch & Chat meets at the clubhouse every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for coffee, needlework & comradeship. Please feel free to join us on Thursdays. For more information contact Catherine Spellings at 713-896-1652 (home) or 713-628-7083 (cell) or [email protected]

When the “emergency” call came from Cypress Assistance Ministries, Cypress Christian School employees and students went to work collecting food for needy families in the community. During the month of October, elementary students contributed cereal and jelly while secondary students contributed canned meats, fruits and vegetables as well as soup and pasta. The relationship between Cypress Christian School and Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) began many years ago and continues to this day. We have partnered to help meet the needs of families in crisis due to illness, job loss or other circumstance. Last fall, Cypress Christian participated in the effort to provide for Katrina families; and over the 2005 holidays, CCS hosted a food drive to stock the pantry at CAM. Again this holiday season, CCS employees and students plan to contribute food items such

as turkeys, canned goods, non-perishables, toiletry items, diapers, formula and more to meet the needs of those in the Cypress area. We urge you to join the effort to ensure that men, women and children in the Houston area do not go without. Please consider giving to your local food bank this season and beyond! You’ll put smiles on many faces! Cypress Assistance Ministries is located at 11202 Huffmeister and accepts donations from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Wednesday and 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. If you need to speak to someone about donating, please call the Assistance Offi ce at 281-955-7684. Cypress Christian School is an accredited K-12 Christian school and is located at 11123 Cypress N. Houston Road at Jones Road. We are pleased to make a difference in the lives of those who live in our community.

Lakes on Eldridge HOUSTON -- (Sept. 25, 2006) – Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) are hoping a new gene therapy that takes a gene called RTVP-1 directly into the prostate tumor will prove effective in preventing recurrence of the disease. The fi rst phase of the study is designed to test the safety of the treatment and determine the proper dosage of gene, said Dr. Dov Kadmon, professor of urology at BCM. It will be carried out in the department of urology at BCM as well as at Ben Taub General Hospital, The Methodist Hospital and Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. “We are treating patients who are scheduled for a prostatectomy (prostate removal) but who also have a high risk that their disease will recur (or come back),” said Kadmon. “The operation itself is highly successful in eradicating local tumors (in the prostate).” The design of the study is simple, said Kadmon. “One injection into the prostate that should take no more than 10 minutes, although patients will be monitored in a special unit of the hospital for 23 hours to make sure there are no side effects. After that, they come to the unit for a check-up once a week.” After about 30 days, the subjects undergo their surgery, which has already been scheduled, he said. He said the hope is that the gene therapy will reduce the risk that cancer will recur at or near the site of the tumor as well as in distant points in the body. “We hope that by generating a systemic immune response, we are

enabling the body to destroy prostate cancer cells that have moved elsewhere,” he said. Kadmon and his colleagues plan to test six different doses of the gene. The gene therapy involves attaching an inactivated adenovirus (related to viruses that cause respiratory infections) to the RTVP-1 gene. As the virus infects the tumor cells, it will introduce the gene into the cells as well. (RTVP stands for related to testes-specifi c, vespid and pathogenesis proteins.) The RTVP-1 gene was isolated in the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Thompson, also a professor of urology at BCM. As Thompson began to study the gene, he found that it was a target for a tumor suppressor gene called p53, which is a major controller of cell activity in prostate and other cancers. He found that the human form of the gene is normally present in benign prostate or low grade tumor but is lost as the tumors become more malignant.“This characterized it as a tumor suppressor gene that is active in the prostate,” said Kadmon. When the gene is introduced into the tumors of animals lacking RTVP-1, it suppresses the formation of new blood vessels. It causes what is known as “apoptosis” or programmed cell death in prostate cancer cells and also activates the immune system to fi ght cancer cells. “We are proceeding carefully, step-by-step,” said Kadmon. He said

Gene Therapy- (Continued from page 12)they do not think the study presents a signifi cant risk. They will inject the virus-gene compound directly into the prostate. While there is a risk of infection with the injection, he said patients will receive antibiotics. Most patients will have some fever after the injection, but it can probably be handled with Tylenol. Doctors will monitor patients after their surgery to determine the effect of the gene therapy on their disease. Funding for the study, which will include as many as 36 subjects, comes from the National Cancer Institute and the Baylor Special Program for Research Excellence in Prostate Cancer that is NCI-funded. Others involved in the study include Thompson, Dr. Brian J. Miles, BCM professor of urology; Dr. Adrian Gee, BCM professor of medicine and pediatrics in the section of hematology oncology; Dr. Thomas M. Wheeler, BCM professor of pathology and urology; Dr. Gustavo E. Ayala, BCM professor of pathology and urology; Dr. Martha P. Mims, BCM assistant professor of medicine in the section of hematology-oncology; and Dr. Teresa G. Hayes, BCM assistant professor of medicine, section of hematology-oncology. Patients qualifi ed to participate in this study are individuals diagnosed with high grade prostate cancer (Gleason grade 7 or higher), or who have a blood PSA level of 10ng/ml or higher and are contemplating surgery (radical prostatectomy).
