TREE CANOPY COVERAGE PLAN

320-350 BRONTE ROAD

WARD 1: OAKVILLE

OAKVILLE ON

1.0 Introduction

Lakeshore Tree Services Inc. have been retained by Mr. Mahdi Tajbakhsh to prepare this Tree

Canopy Coverage Plan for the properties at 320-350 Bronte Road in Oakville, Ontario, Ward 1:

Oakville. The purpose of this canopy coverage plan is to illustrate the existing and proposed

tree canopy for the proposed development. The Tree Canopy Coverage Plan represents a

general assessment of the projected tree canopy coverage for these lands located at 320-350

Bronte Road. These properties are located adjacent to the West side of Bronte Road, North of

Rebecca Street.

This analysis quantifies at a conceptual level, how these lands may contribute to the tree canopy

coverage with calculations as to the projected coverage utilizing calculation methods outlined

in the Urban Forest Strategic Management Plan, Town of Oakville: 2008-2027 (UFSMP), Prepared

by Urban Forest Innovations Inc. and Dr. Andy Kenney with input and amendments by Town of

Oakville Forestry staff, March 2008).

It will also address proposed measures that will help meet the criteria established within the

UFSMP for achieving the Town of Oakville’s long term objective of “40% tree canopy coverage

in 50 years”, including criteria related to soil volume, tree health and tree spacing. This analysis

will be informed by the current conceptual block plan.

Study Area

The area designated for the proposed development consists of 1,237m2 of land that is

designated as residential. It is bounded to the west by Margaret Drive, to the South by Rebecca

Street and to the North and East by existing residential development.

2.0 Urban Forest Strategic Management Plan, Town of Oakville: 2008-2027 (UFSMP)

Urban Forest Strategic Management Plan is a highly detailed strategy and planning plan

prepared for the Town of Oakville with recommendations and guidelines for achieving a

sustainable, healthy urban forest Oakville’s developed areas. This document is in support of the

Town of Oakville’s long term vision to achieve its 40% tree canopy coverage target.

The following is a brief summary of some of the targets, recommendations and measuring

criteria described in the UFSMP that are pertinent to assessing the ultimate long term tree

canopy coverage.

3.1 Tree Classification and Sizing

The canopy coverage plan shall comply with the following guidelines -

„ Ornamental trees (3-6m spread) = 15 sq.m and shown as 3m dia.

„ Small stature trees (7-8m spread) = 45 sq.m and shown as 7m dia.

„ Medium stature trees (9-11m spread) = 80 sq.m and shown as 10m dia.

„ Large stature trees (12+m spread) = 115 sq.m and shown as 12m dia.

3.2 Projected Street Tree Canopy Coverage

As a general proposed standard, the UFSMP recommends achieving a 20% street tree canopy

coverage for residential developments. However, it should be noted that trees may not reach

their genetic potential within most streetscape environments due to adverse environmental

conditions. Furthermore, opportunities for street tree planting may be affected by the objective

of achieving a denser, compact and public transit-oriented environment, as part of applying

New Urbanism principles to planned Oakville developments.

3.3 Soil Volumes

A minimum of 15 cu.m (Cubic Metres) of soil volume per tree is required (based on a maximum

900mm depth of cover). Notwithstanding the minimum soil volume, the following represents

the recommended volumes per tree.

„ Ornamental trees (6m spread and less) = min. 10 cu.m

„ Small stature trees (7-8m spread) = min. 15 cu.m

„ Medium stature trees (9-11m spread) = min. 30 cu.m

„ Large stature trees (12m spread and greater) = min. 45 cu.m
