Our MissionLakeside Family Services fulfils our Christian responsibility to society by caring for the community. We provide quality services, focused on the needs of individuals and families in the community at Jurong, regardless of race, language, or religion. We work in harmony with our neighbours, the community and the government.

Our VisionChanging Lives, Transforming Communities

Lakeside Family Centre began in 1993 at Jurong West, operating a Family Service Centre and a Before and After School Care (BASC) Programme. In 2000, we started a second Family Service Centre and BASC Programme in Jurong East. Today, both centres provide services for children, youths and families at-risk in the key areas of casework and counselling, information and referral. In 2007, a third centre located in Taman Jurong began operations. In addition to providing family services to that community, the Taman Jurong centre also serves the chronic poor through our Families-in-Progress Programme. TJ Haven is another initiative to reach out to the incarcerated/ex-offenders and their families. In 2009, Lakeside began the Families-in-Transition (FiT) Shelter, becoming the second agency in Singapore to provide temporary housing and casework support for families displaced due to financial difficulties and other crises. To date, the Lakeside FiT Shelter has served more than 175 homeless families, providing shelter and care during their time of crisis.

This year, we crossed another milestone as we celebrated our 20th Anniversary, and have changed our name to Lakeside Family Services. Our new name represents our commitment to serve the community and to expand and develop services that are needed for the last, the least and the lost in society.

Lakeside is a full member of the National Council of Social Service and approved by the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Registered as a society in 1997 and a charity in 1998, we express our Christian responsibility to society with our banner, “Changing Lives, Transforming Communities”.

We focus on the needs of individuals and families at risk in the Jurong community, serving all regardless of race, language or religion. We work in harmony with our neighbours, the community and the government. Lakeside’s current staff strength is 105, including associate staff, working together with a team of dedicated volunteers.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE (BASC)The Before and After School Care programme continues to provide holistic care to 238 children from both Jurong East (JE) and Jurong West (JW) Centres by meeting their physical, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual needs. The majority of these children attend primary schools in the neighbourhood.

Our ability to care for these children is enhanced by our team of dedicated staff and volunteers – which includes Teachers, Social Workers, a Reading Specialist, Programme Workers, Volunteer Psychologists and Corporate Sponsors. It is our belief that with intentional efforts and meaningful enrichment activities, the strengths and uniqueness of every child can be developed.

We are blessed with an increase in partners from various community stakeholders like the National Heritage Board as well as student, corporate, church and individual volunteers. Their support enabled the development of enrichment programmes for the children.

The continual collaborative work between our BASC staff and caseworkers has enhanced the intervention conducted with families of children in need. A total of 34 case referrals have been successfully enrolled with the centres.

Major Highlights include:

• Enrichment Activities− Weekly buddy reading by student volunteers from United

World College for P3 to P6 children at both centres during school terms. This was followed by programmes in sports, science and drama during the school holidays

− Homework coaching by student volunteers from Nan Hua High School during school terms for P3 to P6 children from JW BASC

− Bi-weekly outdoor excursions and student volunteers-led activities during the June and December School Holidays

Children SerViCeS

− As part of Character Development Emphasis at JW BASC, the character trait of “obedience” was launched through storytelling, craft work and visual reminders in the month of June 2013.

− Anti-bullying group work was conducted for 10 children from JW BASC during the November and December holidays. Two social workers facilitated the children’s understanding on how to be Anti-Bullying Ambassadors.

• Camps− In partnership with Gospel Light Christian Church, a

3-day camp “Best Friend Forever” was held from 27-29 November 2012 for children from JW BASC. This enriched the children’s understanding of the value of healthy friendships.

− A 2-day camp from 18-20 June 2013 anchored by Angora Brethren Chapel was attended by 31 P1 to P3 children from JE BASC.

− An annual 4-day-3-night camp from 29 Nov 2011 to 2 Dec 2012 for Pri 4 to Pri 6 children from JW and JE BASC, enabled children to discover each other’s unique strengths and provided them with opportunities to work in groups. The annual camp remained an excellent platform for the JW BASC Alumni to contribute to the BASC community and stay connected.

February 2013. The sample group consisted of 35 children from JE BASC and 15 children from JW BASC.

• Strengthening Family Ties − In line with our objective to strengthen family ties,

Angora Brethren Chapel partnered JEBASC to host a Christmas Lunch cum Celebrations on 21 December 2012. This was attended by 48 children and parents from the centre.

− A parenting talk on ‘Skills needed to build Strong Relationships with Children’ was attended by 12 parents from JE and JW BASC.

CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAMME (CAP)2012/2013 marked the fifth year of the CAP. The total number of children involved in the programme this year totalled 91, with 36 in Violin , 21 in Guitar , 13 in Drama, 12 in Music Rudiments and 9 in Art.

Our Annual Steps and Sounds Concert was held on 24 Nov 2012 at The Agape, to allow our students to showcase their skills, after a year of musical instruction. This was proudly attended by the students’ parents and caregivers.

Our pilot programme to teach violin skills to children living at our Families-in-Transition Shelter (FiT) concluded in July 2013. We are happy to report that two Music Instructors introduced

by Tong Ming Xi Gallery, have agreed to continue with CAP for another year. From August 2013, children discharged from FiT Shelter continued to benefit from the creative arts programme at our Jurong West BASC.

We are indebted to Tong Ming Xi Gallery for their donation of used violin instruments, help with violin repairs and for linking us to volunteer violin teachers.

New initiatives this year included: - Collaboration with Forte Musicademy to bring Rudiments

music classes to 12 children - Making Art Fun! was held during the June holidays for

our clients’ children. 9 children attended the 3 lessons conducted by our Creative Arts Coordinator.

- Mother’s Day craft (May 2013) and Father’s Day craft (June 2013) were introduced to children at the FiT Shelter who were in-between violin classes. This was intended to help them cultivate a spirit of appreciation for their parents. For many of the children, this was their first time making a ‘Thank You’ and ‘I love you’ craft for their parents.

Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our faithful sponsors, without whom our Creative Arts Programme would not be possible.

EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES (EPS)This service supports children with learning difficulties from both BASCs and the community. The community children are referred by our Social Workers and Counsellors, as well as the neighbouring schools.

This year, our EPS unit served 120 children. This included children in the following programmes:

1. Reading Diagnostic and Intervention Programme (R-DIP)2. Psychological Assessment and Intervention Programme3. Behavioural Assessment and Intervention

Our one-to-one Reading Intervention continues with about 10 adult volunteers helping 20 P1-2 needy children on a weekly basis. Children helped in this way, has been most effective as some children are also Attention Deficit or Dyslexic.

A highlight of the year was our Annual Literacy Funcamp. This was organised and supported by student volunteers from Fuhua Secondary School. As a fitting end to the camp, the students were brought to the Jurong Regional Library to participate in Kids’ Lab, a hands-on Science programme. This was sponsored by BASF, The Chemical Company.

The kidsREAD Club that was started last year at JWBASC is a good platform to inculcate an enjoyment of stories and illustrations in our students.

As a result, a total of 3 kidsREAD Clubs have been started to serve children at JWBASC, JEBASC and our FiT Shelter, with a

combined enrolment of about 45. The Club at the FiT Shelter is also open to children from the Interim Rental Housing (IRH) Scheme. Besides staying focused during story-time and craft-time, students were observed to be more interested to read on their own and to be illustrators and authors of stories.

To further their interest in the dramatisation of stories, 20 students were sponsored by National Library Board (NLB) to attend a performance of Ashputtel by iTheatre on 8th Nov 2012 at the Alliance Francais Theatre.

We are most appreciative of being able to benefit from the DEAR@Community Programme with the NLB, borrowing up to 200 books every 3 months. These books are read by students from United World College with our P3-4s during the weekly Buddy Reading.

This year, we also signed up for NLB’s Bookcross Programme where books donated by the public are made available to us. These were artfully displayed at our BASCs for students to browse and eventually to bring home.

A workshop to ‘Teach Reading and Writing to Primary School Students’ was organised on 12 Jan 2013 for volunteers and staff as part of our continuing education.

We are grateful for the help of the Department of Psychology of NUS which has since April 2010, carried out educational and psychological assessments of our children.

This service supports children with learning difficulties from both BASCs and the community.

CHILDREN HOLIDAY ENRICHMENTA highlight of the year was a pilot group work, open to children whose parents come to Lakeside for help.

The “Know It To Beat It” Stress Management Workshop from Health Promotion Board was adapted into a 5-session group work. There were a total of 5 participants, and it was a very meaningful time of fun, bonding and learning.

Over the 5 sessions, topics covered included knowing how to define stress, how to reframe negative thoughts into more positive ones and how to recognise significant people in one’s lives whom one could turn to for support. At the end of the

last session, a proud moment for the children came when they were presented with certificates of achievement for successfully completing the groupwork.

One highlight of the groupwork was an outing to the Science Centre, where the children had to negotiate a “Laser Maze”. They had to avoid lasers to get to several checkpoints within a tight time limit. The children’s verdict of the groupwork was expressed by their interest to participate in future groupwork.

Our one-to-one Reading Intervention continues with about 10 adult volunteers helping 20 P1-2 needy children on a weekly basis.

GANG DESISTANCE PROGRAMME (GDP)For the first pilot run of the GDP, from August 2012 to July 2013, we had a total of 10 youths with ages ranging from 16-18. The main components of the programme included individual and family sessions, groupwork and sports activities.

Individual and Family sessionsCounselling sessions were conducted regularly either at the Singapore Boys’ Home or at Lakeside. The purpose of these sessions was to journey with the youths on issues they face in the Boys’ Home or with their peers. Each counselling session was a time where they could share their struggles and were helped to cope with stress arising from emotional and transitional issues.

Group WorkThere was a total of 9 groupwork sessions conducted in the Boys’ Home covering topics such as self esteem, peer pressure, gang desistance, relating to parents, sexuality and goal setting. Over the span of the groupwork sessions, we observed how the youths, initially rowdy and reluctant to participate, gradually opened up to each other as they shared their views honestly and in a genuine manner. As a result, they developed insight into their problems and learnt valuable life skills.

Sports and Enrichment ActivitiesThrough sports and enrichment activities, the youths learnt the importance of teamwork, effective communication, self awareness, as well as personal strengths and weaknesses. This will stand them in good stead as they journey into adulthood.

GUIDANCE PROGRAMME (GP)Guidance Programme (GP), a six month programme, aims to help first time youth offenders who have committed petty offences. It provides them a second chance to make good. This may help the youths avert further infractions with the law.

From September 2012, the scope of the programme has been widened to include second offenders and those at high risk of

succumbing to crime. To reinforce the serious predicaments these youths find themselves in, GP Introductory Meetings (GPIM) are currently held at police stations. School representatives are invited to sit in for the briefing. With this move, we saw an increase in involvement and interaction between our counsellors and school authorities. This provided a more holistic support for the youths.

A total number of 95 youths were referred from Jun 2012 to Jul 2013.

The overarching theme of “Who Am I In This World”, our school holiday programme, focused on the developmental needs of youths. Groupwork, experiential and enrichment activities were the channels through which youths learnt self-awareness and practical life skills. In addition, family counselling sessions were also conducted.

The Youth Camp which was held at Sentosa in Dec 2012 was innovative, as the youths took up roles of Mission Spies using the concept of the popular Korean game show, “Running Man.”

The youths were also treated to movies like “Man of Steel”. Facilitators helped draw inferences from the movie to the overall theme of “Who Am I In This World”.

For the Community Service Project held in late 2012, the youths went to the Hospice Care Association to share games and performances with their residents. The seniors were delighted with their presence.

In June of 2013, a collection for old clothes and newspaper was held at several blocks around Jurong West. Prior to collection day, youths were required to visit residents to publicise the event. This project taught the youths how to engage people in a pleasant manner. A total of $268.70 was raised which was donated to Breakthrough Missions for their work with ex-drug addicts and inmates.

A visit was also made to the Breakthrough Missions Halfway House where the youths were introduced to the living conditions of the residents and its programmes. Residents shared their life stories and warned them against drug-related crimes.

Two talks were conducted for 19 parents in December 2012 and June 2013. Topics included “The Importance of Showing Care Before Discipline” and “Letting Go”. There was also a Parent-Teen Bonding Session for both parents and youths to learn communication skills.

Our new Hi-Flier programme was launched in April 2013 with one of the local schools and the feedback is promising.

Through the Guidance Programme (GP), families and youths were beginning to make honest efforts to learn to care for and support each other. It was also heartening that youths were making headway in terms of learning about self-worth and sound values.

HI-FLIER Due to the decommissioning of our high ropes structure on Aug 12 2012, we were forced to rethink the aims and objectives of the Hi-Flier programme and how we could still reach out to schools in the area.

First of all, we needed a programme that would appeal to youths who were under performing at school or in danger of dropping out of the school system altogether. Secondly, we wanted to use a range of different activities to connect with these youths and help address their needs. Lastly, we wanted to work with youths in groups of about 8 to 10 over a period of time in a productive manner.

From these decisions was birthed the new Hi-Flier programme consisting of three half-day activities over a period of about 10 weeks, followed by a debrief. The first two sessions would help facilitate an understanding of the youths and to assist them to contemplate the direction their lives were heading. The last session would give the youths an opportunity to meet and hear from people who have faced and overcame difficult life

struggles. Lastly, the debrief session would include a reflection of the earlier experiences and what it meant to them personally.

Our new Hi-Flier programme was launched in April 2013 with one of the local schools and the feedback is promising.

PROJECT YO! (YOUTH OUTREACH)Project YO! (Youth Outreach) is a vital part of our youth programme to reach out to and engage at-risk youths in the Jurong community to realise their strengths and potential. We empower the youths to take the necessary steps in making quality choices in their daily lives so that they can become a positive influence in their community.

TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday)Our drop-in centre for youths in the community provides a safe place to hang out and build meaningful friendships every Friday evening. TGIF also offers youths relevant workshops and activities that help them in their personal development.

• In March 2013, we collaborated with a NTU volunteer student group to run an anti-smoking programme. We also emphasised the importance of support for each other to help overcome smoking. The youths found the programme enjoyable and at the same time appreciated the importance of working as a team.

• During the December school holidays an overnight cycling event at the East Coast Park was organised. For the 25 youths participants, it was their first night cycling experience. New friendships and teamwork were forged during the event. Some bicycles broke down along the way and a few youths took the initiative to help push these through the night so that the entire team could reach its destination.

To date, 122 youths came to the TGIF with an average weekly attendance of 20 youths.

Lakeside BasketballLakeside Basketball aims to connect with and empower at-risk youths through weekly basketball sessions. We identify and engage youths who are potential school drop-outs, gang members and/or are involved with drugs or underage smoking. Lakeside Basketball provides a healthy platform for youths to develop sportsmanship, discover their potential and improve their physical wellness. It is also an effective way for them to build friendships and social support.

• Jurong Green Community Centre is the home ground for the games. Located in the middle of 5 secondary schools, the indoor basketball court is a strategic place to bring together youths with a common passion.

• Due to overwhelming demand, the fortnightly sessions were changed to weekly ones. There was also intentional contact time with some of the youths over meals where they were less reserved and guarded and more open to talking about their lives.

• The weekly attendance averaged 30.

In June 2013, we organised a basketball tournament in partnership with students from the United World College South East Asia. It was a great success! About 70 youths were involved. Team spirit and great passion were displayed during the tournament. Our youths were given the opportunity to showcase their skills and learnt to work as a team in order to finish strong in the tournament. New friendships were formed and the participants learnt much about sportsmanship. We are very appreciative of the volunteers from UWC who displayed a strong sense of responsibility and tremendous initiative.

In addition, the youths attended basketball games at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to watch professional players in action. The staff also had a wonderful time bonding with them during these games.

Some of the youths also participated in TGIF. This was very encouraging for the staff as it demonstrated that our outreach efforts were beginning to bear fruits.

SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK (SSW)School social work forms a liaison between the school, family and community agencies in helping children at risk reach their full developmental potential. Lakeside works with at-risk youths who face challenges that hinder their academic progress by addressing underlying social, emotional and psychological issues.

Lakeside’s own initiative includes OPAL (Outreach to Peers for Active Learning), with individual/family counselling and talks/workshops for both teachers and parents. This year our programme has expanded to meet the changing needs of youths in 7 secondary schools and 4 primary schools.

In addition, we also offered Enhanced Step-Up (ESU) for youths at risk of dropping out of school. ESU provides individual and family counselling, case management, consultations and case conferences with school personnel and also group work. Two secondary schools and one primary school were served under ESU.

The total number of students who attended our group work was 36 and the total number of counselling cases was 23.

STREETWISE PROGRAMME (SWP)A total of 28 youths participated in the Streetwise Programme (SWP) between August 2012 and July 2013.

This programme seeks to help youths break away from gang involvement. It also teaches them skills to manage challenges in life.

CounsellingIndividual sessions with the youths were conducted fortnightly. Interacting with the youths over a game of table tennis or billiards has proved to be effective in building rapport. Family

counselling sessions were also conducted once a month which has helped to improve understanding and communication between the youths and their parents.

Parenting WorkshopParenting Workshops were held in December 2012 and June 2013 to provide opportunities for parents to reflect on their parenting styles and how these affected their teens. The parents learnt to set limits with appropriate consequences to help their teens develop responsibility.

Sports and Outdoor Activities The youths were engaged in basketball and street soccer which provided them with a healthy outlet for stress management. These activities were also enjoyable and helped to build teamwork and confidence in the youths.

Service Learning In June 2013, the youths were given an opportunity to serve the elderly at St. Joseph’s Home. This outing allowed them to demonstrate empathy and care for the elderly.

Group WorkThis was held every fortnight and helped youths acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to deal with their problems through a variety of in-depth discussions and other activities. Topics covered included gang-related issues, self-esteem, goal setting, anger management and relationships.

Friendly Basketball Match with another SWP AgencyIn June 2013, we organised a friendly basketball match that included youths from the Youth Guidance Outreach Services (YGOS). This provided an opportunity for our youths to have fun and to learn to work together as a team.

One Day Camp A one day combined Youth Camp at Sentosa was organised in December 2012 with the aim of helping youths to identify as well as build on their strengths and to appreciate their own uniqueness.

Visit to Breakthrough Missions Halfway HouseTwo visits to Breakthrough Missions Halfway House were made in November 2012 and June 2013. During these visits, many youths were encouraged and inspired by the testimonies of some ex-offenders, many of whom were also ex-gang members. On the whole, the youths became more aware of the serious consequences of gang involvement and also more committed not to engage in such activities.

Christmas CelebrationA mini celebration was organised for our youths in December 2012 as it was also the final session of the year. The youths appreciated the Christmas celebration and the spirit of goodwill.

Family Life Services encompasses Family/Parenting and Marriage Preparation/Enrichment. Between August 2012 - July 2013, several programmes were rolled out to empower and enrich family and couple life.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION/ENRICHMENTThis year, initiatives were introduced enabling us to reach more couples build resilient marriages.

LOVE Notes In partnership with Marriage Central, Lakeside conducted a two-evening marriage enrichment workshop, entitled LOVE Notes. Marriage Central invited well-known author Bill and Pam Farrel who designed this interactive video-based programme, written in the Singapore context. Family life educators from Lakeside were also trained by these experts to facilitate this unique programme, tailored for soon-to-weds and newly-wed couples. The workshop was conducted twice, one for our casework clients and another for FiT Shelter clients, reaching out to a total of 10 couples.

Public TalksLakeside continues to reach out to the wider audience through public talks at the Jurong Regional Library. The talk on “Secrets to Effective Couple Parenting for the 21st Century Parents” attracted about 48 participants.

Media and PartnersOn 30 August 2012, we were invited by 93.8 Live “Parenting Made Easy” to share with listeners tips on how to effectively parent as a couple.

We also contributed an article to Marriage Central’s online resource entitled “Making Cents of the Singapore Dream”. The article shares with couples how to manage financial expectations.

FAMILY LIFE EDUCATIONIt has been an enriching experience for Lakeside to empower many parents through our talks and workshops in the past year. One of the public talks we conducted was to residents of the Jurong Spring Community. Parents, together with their children who were recipients of the Edusave Award, attended a talk to learn to communicate effectively with their children. It was heart warming to note that a total of 500 parents were present during the talk.

For the third consecutive year, we conducted a talk to needy families in Taman Jurong during the FAMFIESTA Annual Camp in June. We were encouraged by the positive feedback from participants. We were also invited by Shell Chemicals Singapore to conduct a “Work-Life Balance” Talk to their staff. More than 50 staff signed up for the “Lunch and Learn” initiative started by Shell Jurong Island.

Besides these talks, we also conducted in-house parenting talks to our clients at Lakeside. A total of 717 parents attended talks on topics ranging from money matters to building family relationships.

By 2030, one-fifth of Singapore’s population will be above 65 years old and the number of seniors living alone is likely to increase from the current 35,000 to 83,000. Statistics has shown that these seniors will be living longer, able to be productive at work for a longer period of time, have higher education and will be more IT savvy. However, seniors with dementia and depression are on the rise too.

In view of these trends, our seniors’ programme is designed to “Empower seniors through greater participation in meaningful activities, leveraging on their strengths through training and opportunities to contribute to the community”.

Through our weekly English lessons, regular outdoor activities and special talks, we help about 70 seniors improve their

social, physical and emotional well being as well as their family relationships.

Our English programme has been well received and serves an average of 30 seniors a week. Talks on physical and emotional health were conducted every quarter. Birthdays were also celebrated quarterly with the sharing of home-cooked food. We were also blessed with many corporate volunteers who have greatly enriched the experiences of the elderly with excursions.

Annual events such as Parents’ Night and Christmas Celebrations were held to provide opportunities for the seniors and their families to come together.

Our English programme has been well received and serves an average of 30 seniors a week.

FAMILIES-IN-PROGRESS PROGRAMMEThe period August 2012 – July 2013, saw various companies, sponsors and schools working together with Lakeside Family Services in extending community outreach to needy families in Jurong.

Sponsorship was received in the form of food rations and food hampers during the various festivals. Student volunteers from secondary and tertiary institutions were also invaluable to many of our programmes.

A major contributor with active staff participation was Far East Organization. Needy families were treated to a movie screening, a 2-nights Hotel Staycation and a Back-to-School Event in 2012.

In 2013, Far East Organization sponsored a Back-to-Basics Workshop for Primary 4-6 students. They engaged trainers from Adam Khoo for our Secondary 1-2 students and their parents to encourage them to believe in their children’s potential. This

was followed by an outing to Sentosa for the participants. In Jun 2013, hundreds of needy families were also invited to an excursion to the Gardens by the Bay benefitting from their generosity.

Without these caring corporations and their passionate staff’s contributions in effort, time and money, many events for our needy families will not have been possible. TJ HAVENWe serve the needs of the incarcerated in many different ways.

Resettlement Programme (ReP)The ReP prepares selected short-sentence inmates to be re-integrated back to society upon their release. Our staff team conducted group work on Brief Intervention (BI) with inmates with 28 runs for the year. This is a hands-on psycho-educational training and initial hand-holding by our staff.

Inmates Helped193 inmates received counselling through the Individualized Service Plan (ISP). Upon their release, many were followed up by our social workers.

Lives Touched & Changed1) After a family session with our social worker, a 57 year-

old ex-inmate was reunited with his family after a 10-year imprisonment.

2) Upon his caseworker’s recommendation, a 24 year-old ex-inmate, ex-gang member was awarded the Yellow Ribbon Fund STAR Bursary to resume his law studies at a local polytechnic.

Mother’s Day CelebrationThis is an annual event that brings together TJ Haven clients & their families to honour mothers for their dedication & sacrifices made. A total of 16 mothers & 31 children attended this celebration

Tele-visitOur tele-visit service caters to families with loved ones in prison. These families find it difficult to travel to tele-visit centres provided by the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) in Changi. There were a total of 1,397 televisits, including 221 new sessions for the year.

A Needs Assessment survey has started since September 2012 to identify the various needs of Televisitors so that we can better serve them.

Tuition PlusWe have about 15 students who attend tuition at Taman Jurong centre every Wednesday afternoon on a regular basis. Children, whose parents have been incarcerated, are coached in their studies by student volunteers from ACJC, Pioneer Junior College and ACS Independent under the guidance of a Lead Tutor, Mrs Chng.

Volunteers from Raffles Girls’ School also organised enrichment programmes and outings for these children as well as monitor their progress.

A significant milestone was when a student managed to pass her PSLE, on her second attempt, after attending our tuition programme for a year. We were much encouraged by the card she wrote to the tutor and volunteers to thank them for their help. She is now in secondary one.

Enrichment Programme for the Tuition Plus Students:

1) On 29 August 2012, about 10 students took part in a workshop organised by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM). For many of them, it was the first time they were exposed to contemporary artwork.

2) On 12 Jan 2013, about 6 students were invited to the Official launch of the Taman Jurong Gallery organised by SAM. They were interviewed about their artwork which was displayed at the gallery and had photographs taken with the Member of Parliament, Taman Jurong.

3) On 18 Feb. 2013, about 5 Chinese students attended the Chinese New Year’s celebration sponsored by Credit Suisse. It allowed students from less privileged families to have a wonderful time of celebration together.

4) Many of the Tuition Plus students were involved in the Adam Khoo’s programme which provided invaluable insights into learning. This was conducted in April 2013.

5) 11 May 2013 was our Mother’s Day celebration. 23 children were involved in the activities arranged by volunteers from Singapore Polytechnic. They made appreciation cards and gave testimonies about their mothers’ devotion to them. It was a memorable time for the children and their mothers.

6) On 11 June 2013, ACJC student volunteers organised an enrichment programme to help 17 of our students discover and develop their strengths. The session served as food for thought for our students as they reflected on their potential.

Talks for Taman Jurong Haven, TJHFinancial Literacy talks for needy families were conducted on 11 June 2013 and 5 July 2013 with 19 and 10 participants respectively.

The needy families found the talks beneficial and our caseworkers have continued to help our clients put into practice what they had learnt about financial management.

Rainbows ProgrammeDuring the period 19 Nov-4 Dec 2012, 10 children aged 10-12 who were going through grief and loss of parents through incarceration, divorce or death were helped to cope through the Rainbows programme which provides an avenue for them to talk about their pain.

Initially, the children were reluctant to speak up but their feedback at the end was positive and they requested to continue with the programme.

MOTHERS’ SUPPORT GROUP The Mother’s Support Group (MSG) is a weekly programme providing a safe environment for stay-home mothers and homemakers for mutual support, growth and accountability.

This year, around 20 mothers participated in weekly activities organised by our staff. These included monthly birthday celebrations, outings and picnics at East Coast Park and West Coast Park, where family members were invited along. In addition, Mandarin classes and life skills workshops were also conducted for these mothers as part of their continuing education.

We wish to specially thank the mothers who volunteered to sew a large and colourful quilt to commemorate Lakeside Family Services’ 20th anniversary. This was proudly presented to DPM Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, our Guest-of-Honour at the Anniversary dinner.

It was indeed a meaningful year for the mothers as they built rapport during our weekly meetings and continue to support each other emotionally.

FAMILIES-IN-TRANSITION (FiT) SHELTERThe Families-in-transition (FiT) shelter continued its service of providing temporary shelter for homeless and displaced families. For the fourth year, many homeless families across Singapore, especially those with young children and the elderly have received shelter at FiT.

KidsREAD ClubThis year’s KidsREAD Club at the FiT Shelter for Shelter children aged 4-6 years old, welcomed children in the IRH (Interim Rental Housing) as well. The love of reading and good reading habits were cultivated among 10 young children through storytelling and crafts. It was also an opportunity for them to interact with children from different races from an early age. The KidsREAD Club is carried out in collaboration with our Children Services and dedicated volunteers and is an example of the type of integrated service Lakeside provides.

Violin Classes Held at Shelter Office for FIT ChildrenThe violin class was another collaboration of FiT with the Creative Arts Programme in our Children Services. It was a 6-month elementary course with 2 volunteer-instructors from the Tong Ming Xi Gallery. Every Saturday from 9.30am to 11.30am, Mr Jun Qiang and Ms Siew Jia instructed keen ‘violinists’ on the basics of violin-playing. Violins of different sizes were also donated by Tong Ming Xi Gallery.

Eight out of 16 students completed the course. They worked very hard and performed in front of their families at FiT Family Bonding Day on 17 August 2013.

One highlight for them was to attend a concert by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) at the Republic Polytechnic on 16 March 2013. The concert featured Vivaldi- Ring of Mystery. Our students were so inspired that some of them signed up for additional classes with our Creative Arts Programme.

FiT Tuition ProgrammeThe FiT Tuition Programme (2013) motivates children from homeless families, aged 7- 14 years old, to learn using fun-filled activities. We have been blessed by a team of 7 dedicated volunteers from Pioneer Junior College, who are regular and committed to providing tuition to our children. Sessions are every Wednesday afternoon and at least 8 children attend on a regular basis.

The children worked on interesting games and worksheets at tuition. Stickers and small tokens serve as incentives for neatly completed work and regular attendance. Parents informed us that their children looked forward to this additional coaching by their ‘big brothers and big sisters’.

Children Art Touch Programme This program was conducted during the school holidays, from 17-21 June 2013 for 36 children aged 7-12 years old. The theme of the 5-day program was “Strengthening Emotional Literacy Through Arts and Recreation”. The activities provided the children with a venue to express their emotions. They also learnt about values, relationship-building and good behaviour.

Activities included an emotion-check, stress management, and a healthy self-image. The children were excited by the hands-on activities which included competitions, exercises and performances. They were all duly recognised at the closing ceremony.

A big encouragement was when a parent of one of the participants confided to his caseworker that his daughter’s teacher noticed a remarkable difference in her behaviour after the June holidays. She was more confident and showed enthusiasm in her studies.

The girl had won first prize at our Art competition during the June programme!

Youth Club A Youth Club in FIT shelter was launched this year with more than 30 youths in attendance. The youths made new friends through sports, storytelling and board games. Volunteers from Healthserve played a vital role to inculcate good manners and help boost self-esteem in the youths. We are greatly indebted to them for their selfless service.

ManAge – Men’s Support Group for FIT Male Shelter ResidentsThis programme was first launched on 2 February 2012 at our shelter office to equip men with life-skills during their stay at the shelter, the 8-sessions workshop was conducted by volunteer-trainers together with FIT staff on Thursday evenings. Some topics included Financial Management, Family Stories through A Family Photo and a Focus on Personal Growth.

Generally, the workshops were well received by our male residents as they interacted freely over KFC dinners and hot drinks. Some shared freely of their own pain and struggles. Others preferred to remain quiet; content to listen to somebody else’s life story.

Our volunteer-trainers challenged the men to make positive changes in their personal as well as family life.

Some highlights included: On-the-Spot Photo-taking of the families at the shelter, an overnight fishing trip to St John’s

Island on 3 March 2012 and a Family-Get-Together. The latest celebration was held on 17 August during our Family Bonding Day.

Beginning 14 September 2013, ManAge has taken on a new name, Breakthrough. Breakthrough is an open group comprising of 6 workshops for all male residents from our FiT Shelter running on alternate Saturdays.

We are grateful to our volunteer-trainers who have been working closely with the FiT Shelter team in making a positive impact to the lives of displaced families.

2013 saw a large increase of volunteers from our corporate partners. Our existing partners (Shell Jurong Island, HBSC Bank, Far East Organization) strengthened their community involvement with Lakeside while new corporates such as FITCH Design, Procter & Gamble, Levi Strauss & Co., Schaefer, Cummins and Jaya Holdings joined in serving the Jurong community.

United World College (Dover Campus) and ISS International School Singapore worked with the children from the Reading Programme as well as youths in Basketball Outreach. The International Community School conducted enrichment classes for children under FiT programme on alternate Saturdays, while Pioneer Junior College anchored the Tuition programme for children from the FiT Shelter and Families in Progress.

Gospel Light Christian Church and Angora Brethren Chapel reached out to the children through homework help, camps and other activities.

Provisions for Lakeside came through various sources such as the government, statutory boards, as well as donations from individuals, corporates and religious institutions, foundations, and the public. Donations totalled $988,000 for the year.

This has been a joyous and rewarding year as we saw our financial needs being met through major fundraising projects that were organised in conjunction with Lakeside’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.

The 20th Anniversary Charity Golf Tournament 2013 was held on 3 May 2013 at the Jurong Country Club. A total of 144 golfers participated in this event, which raised a total of $200,000 in donations. Mr David Ong, Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC and Advisor to Jurong GRC GROs (Bukit Batok) was the Guest-of-Honour.

Lakeside Family Services was also a grateful beneficiary of the Far East Organization Albert Goh Cup 2013, Singapore Island Country Club May Day Charity 2013, Jurong Country Club Charity Golf 2013, as well as the Jurong Lake Run 2013 themed ‘Running As One – More than Just a Run’.
