from Scott GronholzDirector of Development

I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people. (Philemon 1:4–6)

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Bible commentary on the familiar verses above suggest that Paul’s greetings were not just heartfelt words of appreciation for those he was writing to (although they certainly were that), but that they were also shared motivation for goals he would share later in his letter. In other words, he wanted more from his friends. Me too!

In these months since our last Link edition, perhaps we’ve connected through another Homecoming with the new Alumni Tent, the Giving Society Gala or Chili Lunch, Grandparents Day, our second exciting Grand Event (see p. 7), or maybe it was a long-distance letter or e-mail from you. I cannot begin to share how I am encouraged and energized by these “links”—for they are a clear demonstration of the faith and joy that fill the people who make up the Lakeside family. We know why we continue with this “partnership:” as Paul says, to “deepen [our teens and our own] understanding of every good thing we share”—and it’s been a pleasure sharing with you. Now—what comes next? Stay with us, add another Lakeside event to your calendar, reach out to us through voice or type. Deepen or renew your connection. May we all want more, deeper, effective links to this ministry that makes such a difference to teens and families!

Does your household receive more than one copy of the Lakeside Link?

If so, we need your help!We don’t want to waste postage, but neither do we want to simply drop alumni from our list. We’d much rather send your family members their own copies wherever they do live, even if at college. Will you take a moment and update us with addresses? If you’d really rather have us just stop sending an alum a magazine, let us know that instead.

From: Pastor Jim Buske Lighthouse Youth Center Executive Director & Lakeside Lutheran Class of 1993

Dear Lakeside family:This spring we will surpass 500 Lakeside students serving as peer mentors at Lighthouse Youth Center (LYC) since 2007. Thank you for the opportunity to work with your students the last seven years, as sophomores come for a day and volunteer at LYC. I want to share with you that the greater mission of this project is working. The goal that Pastor Clark Schultz and I put together all those years ago was to provide an opportunity for students to put their faith into action. Over 500 sophomores later, it’s still working! While I was at Martin Luther College recently for Evangelism Day, I gave presentations with 42 students. Eight of these students were LLHS grads; they shared with their peers that day what the LYC experience meant to them and how it opened their eyes to living their faith. Two confessed that this experience sealed the deal to go into the ministry.Yesterday I talked to my staff to make sure they were OK with us partnering again (it’s a lot of work for us as well as for LLHS). All of them said, “Yes!” They know many of our volunteers from Wisconsin Lutheran College are former Lakeside students that first came to LYC through their sophomore experience!Thank you for your continued dedication to my high school alma mater, your patience with our partnership, and your pride in creating ambassadors for the Kingdom for the next generations!

As a senior in 1980, Sue Koch Gronholz didn’t know she would bake professionally someday; she just knew she loved to cook, from childhood Christmas cut-out fun with her mom and sister to the full spate of Foods courses at Lakeside with teacher Sandra Corlett (aka Miss Sandra Grandt Sue’s freshman year). That Sue would also be blessed to have Mrs. Corlett as homeroom teacher was what Sue’s mom called a “God-wink!”An avid kitchen experimenter, Sue enjoys tweaking recipes or hearing ideas and coming up with her own take on a dish. Sharing recipes with others—including cookbook editors—has always been a fun part of the process. In 1993, she was asked to be one of the first Field Editors for Taste of Home, what is today the world’s leading food media brand. After running a family organic greenhouse and produce business for years, she perfected scones, coffee cakes and cheesecakes for area coffee shops. While Sue has shared many recipes in her roles over the years, she “dazzled judges” in 2011 when she sent in her recipe for Neapolitan Cheesecake, and subsequently won the $25,000 Grand Prize in the national contest (“Best of ” 2011 edition).* Since then, she’s also been featured in the Aug/Sept 2012 Taste of Home issue that featured contributors to TOH’s Best Loved Recipes cookbook. In that issue she shares her Layered Turtle Cheesecake as well as Grandma’s Potato Salad.* With a resumé like this, Sue says being asked to donate her creations to fund-raisers comes with the territory. When Lakeside added a dessert auction to the Grand Event this year, of course her prizewinner was there, bought and fully enjoyed by the Doyles, McBrides, Rowoldts and Wegners. (The story goes that a plate of cheesecake wasn’t enough for someone at the table, who went on to lick the serving utensil.) Here’s to many more years of success in the kitchen for one of Lakeside’s own!

Bottom: Dozens of tables sat 258 diners; among the guests were (l-r) Ted (‘95) & Kirstie Klug, Michelle & Ed Wolf Jr., Steve & Becca Lauber, Scott & Sue Filter.

The second annual Grand Event again brought Lakeside Lutheran families, alumni and friends to campus the evening of February 2, 2013. With the theme A Night of Lights, the school hallways, cafeteria and west gymnasium were decked in white lights and the colors of twilight, making for an adult celebration not unlike the students’ upcoming May Banquet festivities.Yet while the guests enjoyed the decor and activities like the students do their prom, the Grand Event holds at its core a purpose beyond an enjoyable night out—that of assisting Lakeside Lutheran High School in its ministry of sharing the Light of Christ with teens and their families. The night began with a social hour, when current students served hors d’oeuvres and played piano while guests enjoyed fellowship and shopping the silent auction and various raffles. Dinner was in the gym under a sparkling

chandelier and candlelit tables. Host Scott Gronholz and returning live auctioneer Mike Stade entertained diners with activities like the Heads or Tails game, a dessert auction and a live auction. We were again blessed with enthusiastic and generous donors, netting $47,000+ overall,

including $9,400 during the live auction for the new student tuition voucher program. We cannot thank enough the 90+ volunteers who made it all possible. Make plans to be a part of GE2014 next February!

Dressed in full pads and hockey skates, they maneuver through hairpin turns, harrowing drops and intimidating jumps ... all while reaching speeds to 40 mph.

Nathan Bauer (‘09) surpassed the 1,000 career points in January, becoming only the 19th player in WLC men’s basketball history to reach the milestone.

Malinda Probst (‘07) serves in the first class of FEMA Corps, which is a partnership between FEMA and Americorps. She’s been part of an assistance team for Superstorm Sandy cleanup in New York. Megan Behl (‘06) was commissioned as the Nurse in Charge at the WELS Central African Medical Mission on March 10. Megan will live and serve for 3 years in Lilongwe, Malawi, where 4 days a week she’ll drive with local staff to one of 4 remote villages to provide health services to about 200 patients per day.

Mark Alberts (’91) was taken home to Jesus on October 11, 2012 after a motorcycle accident. His sister Teresa (Alberts ‘88) Thiele shares that he lived a blessed life with his wife, Meike, in Colorado Springs. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time at their cabin on Pikes Peak. He will be missed by many!
