New weather technology is a life saverI cannot tell you how glad I am to see

April behind us. It is my least favoritemonth of the year. The pollen is horribleand the storms are intense. We certainlyhad quite a month!

Being able to track storms down toyour local neighborhood street andtelling you within a minute or two, theexact time of arrival, was a major break-through in Doppler radar technology.

Now we have a brand new tool. It isonly the second of its kind on the planet. You know it as StormTracker 2 HDDoppler Radar. Its technical name is theKlystron Dual-pol Doppler Radar. TheKlystron is the tube in the radar whichtakes our current Doppler Radar from250,000 watts to 1.26 million watts! Thisincrease in power lets our radar scanstorms 300 miles away, double that ofconventional weather radar. The Dual-poladdition is incredible. ConventionalDoppler sends out a vertical pulse of en-ergy and when it strikes an object likerain, hail, or snow, it bounces back andthen we interpret, according to the signalstrength of the return, what it is we areseeing.

The Dual-pol sends out a vertical

pulse and a horizontal pulse. This allowsus to see what is actually in the cloud. We can tell exactly if it is hail and howlarge the hail is. We can see snow andwhere the snow changes to rain withamazing clarity and precision. This willmake our forecasts incredibly accurate.

And now, the best part of this newtechnology. With conventional Doppler, like the National Weather Service uses, ittakes up to seven minutes to scan a thun-derstorm. First, the radar scans the stormat its base and then works its way to thetop of the storm. This procedure is calleda volume scan. In essence, when a severethunderstorm or tornado warning is is-sued, it is up to seven minutes old by thetime we get the warning and issue it.

May brings late spring topwater actionTake a poll among avid anglers and

you’ll find that favorite seasons to fishare varied and opinions run strong. Someprefer the immediate pre-spawn period inApril while others prefer the advantagesof finding concentrations of fish duringthe summer and winter months. But, onething that most anglers will agree on isthat the late spring topwater bite is thebest time of year to be on the water. Both spotted bass and linesides are feed-ing heavily at this time. Aggressive wolfpacks of these predators often chaseschools of baitfish right up to the surfacemaking for some very exciting opportu-nities. Few things in nature rival theadrenaline rush of watching a calm sur-face erupt with slashes and boils of feed-ing fish as you’re trying to get your pluginto the action.

This phenomenon can get pretty dra-matic and it’s common to spot activityfrom long distances in calm water condi-tions. Look for topwater schooling tobegin in early May and go strong throughthe month. Striper action will typicallytaper off by early June while spotted basswith continue this activity through the

summer months. Although action canoccur at any time, early morning andevening periods tend to be the most pro-ductive. As always during the spring, weather factors can have a big influenceon the fishing. While it’s a great time toexploit topwater action, a strong frontalsystem can put the bite down for a day ortwo. It’s important to have a back-upplan in case surface action does not ma-terialize. While searching for this, focusyour efforts from the middle sections ofcreeks out to main lake areas near thecreek mouths. Although the predators arekeying on roaming schools of baitfish, remember that “points point out the fish.”Activity will very often erupt in thevicinity of a prominent point or sub-

merged hump which is typically the ex-tension of a point.

V-Wake a RedfinIf you’re parked off the best looking

point in your favorite creek and lookingfor surface activity, blind casting is al-ways a good idea. Just remember thatyou should be covering open water withsome significant depth and not targetingthe shoreline. Blind casting a plug canput a lot of extra fish on the end of yourline. What type of topwater plug shouldyou choose? It’s no secret that fishermenare a highly opinioned bunch. While“swear by” lure choices will vary widely, there are a handful of tried and true fa-vorites that you’ll not go wrong with.

It’s now been over a decade since theSammy by Lucky Craft hit the topwaterscene. And, it’s still going strong. It’s apricey choice at about $15 per copy butthe results are hard to argue with. Thetrademark American shad is a great colorif you’re shelling out a few dollars forone of these. If you’re looking for a moremodest investment, you’ll not go wrongwith the old fashioned Zara Spook. Thisplug has been around for quite a few

decades with good reason and stillevokes lots of strikes from surface feed-ers. The classic color for this classic lureis blue shore minnow. It’s a north Geor-gia favorite. While the original ZaraSpook is very good, I eventually becamea big fan of its newer big brother, theSuper Spook. As the name implies, this isa beefed up version and weighs in atnearly an ounce. Long casts can be im-portant when pursuing schoolers and thislure can be fired to impressive distanceswith the right tackle. It also sports rotat-ing treble hooks that really make a differ-ence in improving the strike to fish onratio. Bleeding Shad is the only color Ineed for the Super Spook. Another plugto consider is the Redfin by CottonCordell. Technically, this lure is a jerk-bait and will run subsurface on a mediumto fast retrieve. Savvy anglers use a dif-ferent approach. They use a slower re-trieve and keep it on the surfaceproducing what is known as a “V-wake.”This has a great effect on stripers andwill elicit strikes from real bruisers of thespotted bass world. Die hard Redfin fans

pick the chrome and blue color andswear that it’s even better when the finishis chipping off exposing the bone coloredplastic beneath. There is also a sub-cultfollowing of the Smokey Joe color. Two rods are better than one

Lures such as the Sammy, ZaraSpook, and Super Spook mentioned inthe previous paragraph are often calledstick baits because of their basic shape. There’s only one way to present this styleof topwater plug. The proper retrieve isreferred to as “walking the dog.” Reel-ing combined with short twitches of therod tip will cause a stickbait to zig-zag ordart from side to side resembling a flee-ing baitfish. It only takes a little practiceto master this and some plugs are engi-neered to walk with a minimum of effortimparted by the angler. When it comes totopwater tackle in May and early June, opt for medium heavy gear. Both castingand spinning set ups are appropriate. Sixand a half to seven foot rods get the nod.Pair these with reels that will handle atleast 80 to 100 yards of 12-pound testline at a minimum. If you pick up yourfavorite shallow spool model that’s in

vogue with bass fishermen, you’re play-ing with fire because stripers are outthere waiting.

When it comes to line, avoid fluoro-carbon products. While they do a supe-rior job in many applications, they areheavy and will suppress the action oftopwater plugs. This is especially truewith maximum distance between you andthe lure. Spool up with your favorite tra-ditional monofilament product and you’llbe in good shape. On the subject oftackle, it pays to have two rods riggedand ready on deck. Backlashes and tan-gles do happen. This is good insurancefor those times when you’re on top of aschool of predators kicking up water asthey churn the surface. Simply drop onerod and pick up another. If you’redowned bait is floating motionless in theattack zone you may want to put one footon the rod butt or put it in a holder …just in case. I’ve actually had fish be-come hooked up when striking a freefloating lure attached to a tangled rod ona couple of occasions. It can be quite thecircus, especially if you’re fighting an-other fish as well. On another note, it

pays to be cautious when landing fishhooked with large topwater plugs. Ihighly recommend investing in a goodlip gripper type device. These have be-come very affordable for the average an-gler and are much cheaper than a trip tothe emergency room at the local hospital.

Stay mobile to find fishIf you’re out for striper action, live

bait fishing will often pay off whilesearching for the topwater bite. Whensearching an area and making blind castswith your favorite plug, bait up and traila couple of flat lines about 100 feet be-hind the boat. Tie a small balloon in-flated to golf ball size about 10 feetabove one bait and weight the other linewith a medium size split shot about sixfeet up the line for a slightly deeper pres-entation. Frisky blue back herring orshad are great choices when it comes tolive bait. If one rod hooks up on two con-secutive fish, switch the other one to thesame style of presentation. If fish areerupting on the surface all around, thelive bait flat lines can quickly becomemore trouble than they are worth. This isespecially true if you’re doing a lot of

maneuvering with the electric motor. This time of year, it really pays off tostay mobile. If conditions are favorableand you’re not seeing signs of life inseven minutes or so, move on to the nextspot. For greater efficiency, have a routeplanned in advance. Although topwateraction is the name of the game, choppywater can inhibit the surface bite. How-ever, in these conditions, a good jerkbaitcan produce well when cast toward thepoints. As late spring turns into summer, striper action fades but good news is thatthe spotted bass continue to chase bait atthe surface. Windows of opportunity dur-ing the summer months are mostly earlyand late in the day for schooling action.Smaller surface plugs tend to becomemore effective as the season progresses.Poppers such as the Pop-R by Rebel aregood choices along with smaller versionsof the earlier mentioned lures. Some-times bass will key on small baitfish andignore even these smaller topwater plugs. One classic trick is to use a saltwaterpopping cork with a trailing leader. Onthe end of this leader, tie on a very small

Water safety programs expanded at Allatoona LakeMay is National Safe Boating Month

and the US Army Corps of Engineers Al-latoona Lake Project is beefing up itswater safety programs for the 2011 recre-ation season. Many water safety pro-grams will be continuing this summerand others expanding.

On May 28 Vessel Safety Checks willbegin again for the 2011 recreation sea-son. Again, the Corps will be partneringwith US Coast Guard Auxiliary on boat-ing safety checks at Blockhouse Ramp. The USCGA will be conducting thesesafety checks throughout the year atBlockhouse and Allatoona Landing. Thegoal is to educate boaters on the impor-tance of wearing their life jackets and toalways make safety a priority while boat-ing on the water.

It’s important that adults set the exam-ple for youngsters by wearing a lifejacket, checking and knowing theirequipment, and obeying laws, rules andregulations.

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary alsooffers several boating safety classesthroughout the year in conjunction withthe City of Acworth Parks and Recre-

ation Department. Classes include aneight-hour “About Boating Safety” Boat-ing Skills and Seamanship, and a GPStraining course taught on July 23.

Popular programs returnThe Corps’ Life Jacket Loaner Pro-

gram is expanding again this year withlife jacket loaner stations at all Corps op-erated areas.

There will be five new loaner stationsat the following locations: BlockhouseDay-Use Area, Cooper Branch #1,Cooper Furnace Day-Use Area, KnoxBridge Ramp, and Riverside Day-UseArea.

Thirteen of the loaner stations are lo-cated at gatehouses and are issued byPark Attendant Contractors to individuals

wishing to borrow a life jacket. There are 10 additional life jacket

loaner stations that are hanging in ourparks on our bulletin boards. The pro-gram provides families with a safer op-tion when a life jacket is left at home ordoesn’t fit properly. Safe Kids CherokeeCounty has donated the life jackets forthe program with support from the Well-Star Foundation.

The program’s goals are to educateboaters and swimmers on the importanceof wearing a life jacket and of appropri-ate size. However, the most importantgoal is to keep visitors safe on the waterand to save lives.

Ranger Trading Cards are back. Theprogram combines trading cards of Alla-toona Lake Corps of Engineers Rangerswith water safety messages printed onthe back.

Children under 15 years old can col-lect 14 different cards by showing theirknowledge of water safety. The prizes in-clude small floatable totes loaded withwater safety prizes, beach towels, lifejackets, and water park passes. Theprizes will be awarded at different inter-

vals to children that collect the mostcards. Safe Kids Cherokee County wasagain instrumental in the continuation ofthis program, providing funding and lifejackets from WellStar.

Six Flags White Water donated 50complimentary tickets to the RangerCard Program. Individuals who receivethe Buddy Beaver Card can earn a SixFlags White Water one-day pass.

To receive a Buddy Beaver, childrenmust be seen demonstrating water safetysuch as wearing their life jacket. TheCorps of Engineers at Allatoona Lakewants children to be safe when they areswimming this summer at their pool, local park or lake.

About Allatoona: Lake Allatoona is the oldest multi-purpose project in the Corps'South Atlantic Division. Preliminary site work began in 1941 but was discontinuedby the outbreak of World War II. The dam was completed and placed into operationin January, 1950, at a cost of about $31.5 million. The lake is located on the EtowahRiver, a tributary of the Coosa River, about 30 miles north of Atlanta. The damimpounds run-off water from 1,110 square miles into a large, irregular lake. Duringperiods of heavy rainfall, excess runoff is stored to alleviate floods in the lowerEtowah Valley and to reduce flood heights at Rome, GA. During dry periods, storedwater is released to supplement runoff for power production and to produce streamflow. Because the lake serves a large drainage area and is relatively small, the levelof the lake may fluctuate greatly. Daily increases of three to four feet are not uncom-mon following heavy rains with an increase of 20 feet recorded in one week's timeseveral years ago.

Rules, Regulations and MoreGuidelines are not intended as restraints to the enjoyment of park visitors, but as

aids for orderly operation, visitor safety and for the protection of the environment andpublic property. Complete rules and regulations are posted at the entrances to allcampgrounds and copies are available at entry stations.
