VANITY IN THE CHURCH

14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind. Ecclesiastes 1:14 (NKJV)

14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 1 Corinthians 15:14

I don’t know anybody that wants to be known as being vain. It’s not a valued quality. A vain person is one who is conceited. A vain person is someone who sees themselves as better than another. This is certainly not a quality that we like to think of ourselves as having. We may think someone else is vain, but we don’t want to think of ourselves as vain. There’s a different type of vanity, though. This type of vanity means that something is empty or valueless. Sometimes we can feel like there’s no use in doing something because it won’t make a difference.

Paul tells Christians that their faith is in vain if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead. There is nothing else I can find in the Bible that is this essential. The Bible doesn’t say that if Jesus didn’t walk on water, or heal the sick, or teach great lessons, that our faith is in vain. It only says that if he didn’t rise from the dead then our faith is in vain. That’s because Christ’s Resurrection is a vital part of Christian salvation. Read this verse:

For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 (NLT)

That makes me evaluate how I think about Jesus. Do I think about Jesus as the great healer most? Do I think about Him as the great moral teacher most? Do I think of Him as a meek, gentle person most? OR, do I think of Jesus as the risen Lord? He is all of those things, but He is most importantly risen. A risen Lord is what I need in my life if I’m honest, because apart from a risen Lord, then the writer of the book of Ecclesiastes is right. Everything is vanity. If I’m healthy and wealthy and wise, it doesn’t matter if Jesus is not risen! If I’m attractive and have lots of friends, it all comes to a crashing halt when my life on earth ends. It is only the death and Resurrection of Jesus that allows me to know that I have eternal life. That’s why we make a big deal out of our Easter (Resurrection Day if you prefer) celebration. So, is Jesus your risen Lord, or is there vanity in the church? Think about it? Pray about it! By the way, Happy Resurrection Day. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Love in Christ;Pastor Kirk

New Ministry Opportunity

Cub Scouts of America charter

Lakewood Park United Methodist Church is being offered a new ministry opportunity in the form of a Cub Scouts of America charter! Should we accept this, and the leadership council would like to, it will require a lay member of our congregation to be the charter representative. The Cub Scouts would pick the pack leader subject to our approval. As a charter representative, you would be the go-to person for all of the church’s business with the scouts.

This is a potentially fantastic way to further do the Lord’s work in our community and enrich the church’s blessings. Please contact the office or Jay Bell if you would like to explore this wonderful opportunity.

Prayer Shawl/Lap Robe MinistryOur Prayer Shawl/Lap Robe Ministry has begun. The purpose of this Ministry is to knit and/or crochet shawls and lap robes. We meet on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Family Life Center Room 2.

We have 7 participants so far and you are always welcome to join in. Prayer starts our group off, teaching the art of knitting and crocheting, question and answer period concerning your project and then chitchat while we enjoy our craft for the morning. God has given us the talent and creativity to make something special for our own in need members or for someone in our community needing our gift to them to keep them warm.

Our community has many people who are home bound, in hospice and nursing homes who need to know that someone is thinking about them and cares about them - this is a way to show it. Call MaryAnn for more information or just show up on Tuesday morning, all are welcome for this new Ministry.

Thank you ,MaryAnn Layne 917-363-4367

Lakewood Park U.M.C. would like to thank MaryAnn for her time

and energy in bringing back a valuable ministry which will bless

so many!
