Message from the ChairmanThe sheep sector has not been immune to the dark clouds circling above thewhole dry stock sector at the moment and many sheep farmers I have spokento in the past year have expressed their disappointment at the lack ofprofitability in sheep farming over the last few years. What can be done?Certainly we must keep pressure on the processors to return the best pricepossible from the marketplace to us for our lambs and we must continue todemand that the retail sector leave us a reasonable margin for what we produce. As always though we have most control over what we do inside our own farmgates - ultimately we can decide what we produce and when and how weproduce it.

I think one of the things STAP has shown us is how important it is to maximise productivity whilekeeping a tight rein on costs. This is where the Sheep Ireland Breed Improvement Programme has somuch to offer sheep farmers. By achieving our goal of identifying rams that can produce fast growinglambs that can reach French market weights and condition quickly off quality grass we believe weare providing sheep farmers with a powerful tool every time they go out to buy a ram.

The great work being done to identify rams and bloodlines with superior Terminal traits is now makingrapid progress. However it is in identifying the sheep that are most likely to pass on superior Maternaltraits that may well bring the greatest benefit to sheep farmers and to the national flock. Imaginebeing able to go out and confidently identify a ram that would breed you replacement females thatwere highly fertile, milky and breed lambs with high levels of survivability! Well that’s where we hopeto get to within the next few years.

Following consultation with LambPlus participants and commercial farmers it was agreed that theway in which the figures were presented last year was a little confusing so we agreed on a moresimplified version for this year with a €uro-star value for Replacement purposes and also a €uro-star value for Terminal purposes. We continue to work closely with Teagasc to show farmers how toread and understand the new system. I found it took me a little while to figure out this new systemso that I could take in all the information presented for each sheep but now that I have got the hangof it I like it and feel it’s a better way of presenting these figures.

As well as helping farmers to read and understand the Indexes and the importance of highaccuracy, STAP continues to grow awareness of Sheep Ireland and the work we are doing. With oneeye to the future this year we will start taking DNA samples from stock rams participating in LambPlus. The idea here is to build up a bank of samples and information so that when we are ready to startincorporating genomics into the programme we will be ready to go.

I feel the steady improvement being made in the Sheep Breed Improvement Programme is a verypositive development for the Irish sheep sector. We believe we are very much on target to contributeincreasingly to the profitability of the national sheep flock. We are working towards a time when - likewith the ICBF Bull Indexes today - more and more sheep farmers will want to study a rams geneticevaluation before they make a purchase.

Sheep Irelands backgroundSheep Ireland was established in 2009 as a result of the Malone report. It was recognised thatthat Ireland needed a new sustainable breed improvement programme that would identify thebest genetics to improve growth rates, lambing performance and health. One of main driversproven to affect farm profit is the number of lambs weaned per ewe per year, of which Ireland’saverage (1.3 lambs per ewe) has not increased in the last 30 years or so. It could also be seenthat the dairy and beef sectors in this country were making considerable gains from their geneticimprovement programme with the ICBF and that there was no reason the sheep sector shouldnot strive to produce the same proportional gains.

Sheep Ireland’s main aims• Increase the profitability of Irish sheep farmers• Identify and promote the very best genetics in Ireland• Make top genetics available to sheep farmers through the €uro-Star index

Sheep Ireland funding

• DAFM is providing financial support to Sheep Ireland in the form of anannual operating grant and through capital support from the NDP

• Commercial farmers and LambPlus breeders are also financiallycontributing to the Sheep Ireland scheme through the slaughter levy and theLambPlus sign-up fee respectively

€uro-Stars – How to interpret them

Each star represents the ranking of each index in 20% boundsThe higher the stars, the higher the predicted profitability of that animal

Understanding the Sheep Ireland €uro-StarsBelow is an example a catalogue, and it is split in to 3 distinct sections. This or something similarto this is what will be appearing in the sales catalogues at the pedigree society sales in the yearahead. The biggest change this year is the two new indexs (Replacement & Terminal).

1. Replacement (€1.62)– If a farmer desires a ram to breed both lambs both for slaughter andreplacement ewe lambs then they should select a ram based on this index. The bulk of thisindex is a combination of Lamb Survivability, Days to Slaughter, No. of lambs born & Daughtersmilk. The € value beside the index represents the difference in profit that each lamb siredfrom this ram will have.

2. Terminal (€0.839) – If a farmer desires a ram to breed only lambs both for slaughter thenthey should select a ram based on this index. The bulk of this index is a combination of LambSurvivability, Days to Slaughter. The € value beside the index represents the difference inprofit that each lamb sired from this ram will have.

3. Lamb Survivability– This ranks animals based on lambing ease and lamb survival rate. Everypositive % point on this index is an extra lamb surviving to 40 days and vice versa.

4. Days to slaughter– This ranks animals on their genetic ability to grow. The index associatedwith this trait represents the difference in the predicted number of days required for theprogeny of this ram to reach the desired slaughtered weight compared with other animals ofthe same breed.

5. No. of Lambs Born – This ranks animals based on the predicted prolificacy of the femalesfrom this animal compared with other animals of the same breed

6. Daughters Milk – This ranks animals based on the predicted milking performance of itsdaughters compared with other animals of the same breed

Accuracy % A critical element of the €uro-starsAcc is an abbreviation of Accuracy. This figure commands significant attention as it represents theamount of data behind each individual evaluation. Where Acc % is Poor, a considerably smalleremphasis should be placed on the evaluation, however where Acc% is Good a considerably emphasisshould be placed on the evaluation when making a breeding decision.

Factors that affect accuracies

• The volume of back pedigree / ancestry in the Sheep Ireland database• The number of performance recording breeds within each flock• Genetic linkage – having common relations with other recording flocks• Increasing the number of LambPlus recorded sires used in the flock each year• The quality and quantity of data recorded on each individual flock each year• The Acc% of stock rams will affect the Acc% of his progeny• Successfully submitting a ram into Sheep Irelands CPT or MALP programs

Page 8: Lambplus guide & directory 2014

LambPlus Guide 2014/2015

Selecting a ram fit for purpose using the €uro-Stars

Step 1Whether a ram has €uro-Stars or not, some the main principles still apply when selecting a ram.The ram must first be checked to ensure he is physically correct i.e. , mouth, feet, testicles ect.It is possible that a ram could have good stars but be physically incorrect, therefor making aphysical check of each ram before selection an essential part of the process.

Step 2Once the physical checks have been completed and a number of potential purchases have beenidentified, farmers should then use the €uro-Star indexes as a tool to identify their ideal choice(s).

Before looking at a rams stars, the purpose for the ram must first be decided, as the answer tothis question will result in which index is used to aid in the rams selection

• Will it be to breed top replacement ewe lambs and good ram lambs for slaughter?(In which case you select on the Replacement Index)

• Will it be to solely produce lambs for slaughter? (In which case you select on the Terminal Index)

Remember: the Acc% figure is just asimportant as the €uro-Star rating and must

never be overlooked(See Acc% paragraph above)

€uro-Stars will NEVER compensate forphysical problems in a breeding animal

7

Page 9: Lambplus guide & directory 2014

An ounce of breeding is worth a tonne of feedingThere are 5 main areas that affect the performance of a ram from the day he is born until theday of a sale and they are:

1. Nutrition2. Health3. Farm management/system4. Disease5. Genetics

For example: On the day of a sale it can be difficult to decipher what quantity of that ramsperformance to date was dictated by environmental factors and what proportion of it has comefrom his genetic potential. If a ram looks good on the day of a sale and this is due to the fact thatall of his environmental factors were very favourable throughout his lifetime and masked hispotentially poor genetics, if this is the case then the only thing this ram will take introduce intoyour flock is poor genetics, he will not bring a lifetime supply of favourable environmental factorsto your flock i.e. concentrates, vaccines, mollycoddling at lambing. What every farmer shouldwant to introduce into their flock is more profitable genetics, and the best tool to use to do thisis the €uro-Star indexes.

Where to find €uro-Star Rams? There are a range of options available to both pedigree and commercial farmers who are lookingto find a Sheep Ireland performance recorded ram.

• The Sheep Ireland Online Ram Search found on the Sheep Ireland homepage atwww.sheep.ie. (see paragraph below)

• The Directory of LambPlus breeders which can be found at the back of this publication. This lists breeders based on breed and then by county.

• The vast majority of breed society sales will have evaluations included in theircatalogues, but we would always recommend that you contact the society in advanceof the sale to ensure these animals and evaluations will be visible on the day.

If you introduce top genetic replacements into your flockthen you will benefit from this for generations to come, unfortunately the reverse is also true. If you introducepoor genetics into your flock you will also be sufferingthe consequences for generations to come.

The Sheep Ireland Online Ram SearchThe Sheep Ireland Online Ram Search which was launched 2013 is a great tool to enable farmersto search for rams that meet their own customised criteria. Using this search you can search forrams based on €uro-Star evaluations, location, breed and age. The search had over 25,000individual searches last year which a tremendous result, showing the appetite that is out thereto find €uro-Star rams.

You can find the ram search on the Sheep Ireland homepage at www.sheep.ie. If you selectadvanced search you will be presented with the screen below. The main search criteria havebeen highlighted in RED. When searching for a specific animal and you have a partial ID for theram you can enter the partial ID beside Animal, select the Breed, and then select the Searchbutton. If you are just searching for a new ram you could select Breed, County(s) and an indexrequirement.

The result of the search will display a list of animals similar to this. You can then sort the ramsbased on any of the headings simply by clicking on them. More information can then be foundon each ram by clicking on the individual animal, including, evaluations, ancestry, aniaml nameand breeder contact details.

STAPSheep Ireland is heavily involved in the SheepTechnology Adoption Programme (STAP). Eachparticipant of the scheme must use a €uro-Starram to mate with their ewes in year one or twoof the scheme with some exemptions beinggranted in certain cases.

It must be considered though just because aram is eligible for STAP does not mean he hasgood evaluations as the pass standard hasbeen set quite low. In order to make geneticprogress in your flock we would recommendthat you only purchase 4 and 5 star rams onyour selected trait with at least a fair Acc%.

Sheep Ireland Commercial ProjectsSheep Ireland runs two commercial projects, each with a slightly different set of goals. The CentralProgeny Test (CPT) programme and the Maternal Lamb Producer (MALP) producer group.

MALP There was just under 3000 ewes successfully single sire mated across 14 different flocks. Thelambs from these ewes were all recorded from birth to sale with the remainder being retainedas replacements. These flocks help to validate the index’s on commercial flocks and provideSheep Ireland with a solid base on which to build. They also serve as prime examples thatcommercial recording is possible on some commercial flocks if the farmers desires to do so.

In order for a ram to be eligible for STAPhe must have a minimum of 3 stars onthe Replacement or Terminal Index(Outlined in Blue above) on the day ofpurchase.

All rams that are being claimed for STAPmust be submitted in writing to sheepIreland using the Ram Query form. Thiscan be obtained from www.sheep.ie oryour STAP facilitator

Page 12: Lambplus guide & directory 2014

The Central Progeny Test Centre (CPT)BackgroundThe purpose of the CPT in the early years of theSheep Ireland was to create genetic linkages withinand across breeds in order to make a solid base forthe evaluations. This goal has been reached by inlarge, especially across the more activeparticipating breeds. The goal of the CPT has nowprogressed to finding the next generation of topperforming rams and to disperse and promote thatbloodline. The CPT is made up of four different flockswhich have a combined 2,100 ewes. All the lambsin the CPT have lambing performance recorded, including but not limited to lambing difficulty, mortality, birth weight, incidences of fosteringand/or bottle fed lambs. They also have three otherweights collected (6, 12, 20 weeks) and they alsohave their muscle and fat depth ultrasonicallyrecorded. All this information is invaluable and feedsback to all the LambPlus evaluations.

2013/2014 Season In October 2013, forty three LambPlus flocks stockrams from eight different breeds were usedartificially inseminate over 2,100 commercial ewesthat are spread across four different flocks that workvery closely with Sheep Ireland. These ewes thenhave all lambing data recorded, lamb and eweweights recorded along with some new experimentaltraits which sheep Ireland are trying to develop inorder to make the evaluations more accurate. In2014 we are looking at developing a new visualassessment trait, where lambs are rated on a scaleof 1-5 for physical quality.

Reading NSIS (Dept.) tag numbersThe Sheep Ireland database can only accept full and correct NSIS tagnumbers. A full NSIS tag will contain 15 characters.

A full NSIS tag will contain 15 characters

Number of characters

Every Irish tag that have been issued since 2010 begins with IE04 4

This is your unique flock designator (Also found on your movement/dispatch dockets) 5

These 5 digits are unique to that animal on your farm 5

The last character is the check letter and this is used to validates the tag number as being correct and is extremly important to record 1

Total: 15

What LambPlus breeders currently record? The main areas of recording are:

1. Mating2. Lambing3. Weights

a. Lambsb. Mature ewes

4. Ultrasound scanning (muscle and fat depth)

1. MatingTo record mating you need to identify which rams were single sire mated (S.S.M.) with whichewes and what date the ram was introduced and removed.

2. LambingSheep Ireland provide pocket sized lambing notebooks to LambPlus breeders each year whichis very useful for helping breeders to record the relevant lambing information. The criteria torecord at lambing time includes

Dam id • Sheep Ireland will be insisting that a NSIS ID (Dept. Tag) for every ewe in the flockbe recorded and entered to the Sheep Ireland database for any ewes that have yetto have an NSIS assigned to them

LambPlus Guide 2014/2015

Page 14: Lambplus guide & directory 2014

13

LambPlus Guide 2014/2015

Lamb id • All full NSIS is required in order to receive evaluations for an individual animal • Dead lambs at birth do not require a NSIS ID

Date of • It’s critical that dates of birth are recorded accurately in order to produce the Birth most accurate evaluations possible

Lamb status ( i.e. Dead, Alive)• Every lamb will need a lambing status in order to be entered onto the Sheep

Ireland system• This is also the point where abortions should be recorded.• Any lamb that dies 24 hours after birth should first of all be recorded as alive

and subsequently recorded as dead on the flock inventory with the relevant date of death attached

Sex • The sex must be recorded for all lambs (Dead/Alive)

Lambing • Lambing difficulty is scored on a scale of 1 – 4, with one being a natural birth anddifficulty 4 being an extremely difficult birth or caesarean section. It is very important that

there is some variation between these scores within every flock each year.

Birth • All weights are recorded in kg’sweight • We recommend that the first 10 lambs are weighed using scales each year in order

to calibrate your eye so you can estimate the weight of the rest of the lambs.Lambs weights should be recorded to the nearest half kilo.

• It is also important to record the weight of dead lambs • Lambs should be weighed within 24 hours of birth, ideally after the lamb is dried

Lamb rearing status (i.e., bottle fed, fostered) • It is very important to record lambing codes accurately as the system takes each

of these into account when generating the evaluations. Lambs that are bottle fedor fostered need to be recorded on the system

Group • This refers to the management group of the ewes and lambs at each stage of theproduction cycle. Examples of when different management groups should be usedare :– ewes are on different diets pre lambing– ewes and lambs on different diets post lambing

IMPORTANTLambing Score ExplanationUnassisted Ewe lambed down without any shepherd interventionVoluntary Assist Lamb was presenting correctly and would have without doubt lambed

down successfully without increasing the chance of lamb mortality.Slight Assist Ewe required slight assistance at lambing as there was an increased

probability of a dead lamb(s) if no assistance was given. Example: head back, leg(s) back, breech.

Significant Assist Ewe required significant assistant at lambing as there was a very high probability of a dead lamb(s). Example: C-Section, head back, leg (s) back, breech

Page 15: Lambplus guide & directory 2014

LambPlus Guide 2014/2015

3. WeightsLambs: There are fourkey times that lamb weights are to be recorded. Again, it is very importantto record groups if some lambs are being managed under different conditions to others in theflock. There is also no restriction on the number of weights entered for each lamb.

• Birth Weight – (see note above)• Forty day weight – It is obviously not feasible or practical to weigh all lambs when they

are exactly forty days of age, instead it is recommended to weigh a batch of lambs whenthe majority of lambs are between 20 and 60 days of age

• Weaning weight – This weight is to be recorded when the majority of lambs are between60 and 120 days of age

• Scanning weight – This weight is to be recorded when the majority of lambs are between120 and 180 days of age. If a breeder decides to ultrasonically scan their lambs this weightwill be collected on the day of scanning. We also acknowledge that some lambs may besold for slaughter before this weight can be recorded, and we would recommend that theselambs would have the last weight recorded on the farm recorded instead.

4. Ultrasound scanning (muscle and fat depth)One of the main goals on any sheep farm is improving the value of thelamb carcass by either breeding lambs that will met the requiredslaughter weight at a younger age, better confirmation, correct fatcovers and a greater kill-out percentage. Genetics or breeding willundoubtedly affect all of these characteristics therefor collecting thiscarcass information is very important in identifying whichbloodlines/families are producing the most profitable carcass.Unfortunately the number of carcass records from sheep that havebeen recorded through the Sheep Ireland database is limited as mostanimals recorded on the Sheep Ireland database go on for breedingand therefore we cannot collect carcass information in the traditionalmanor (In the factory)

The next best thing to factory carcass data is an ultrasonic scanrecords (see picture) which is collected on farm by a Sheep IrelandTechnician. Currently only about 60% of recording LambPlus flockshave this information recorded each year on their flock as this comesas an additional cost, however it demonstrates their commitment togiving their customers as much information on their rams as possiblein order to make the most informed breeding/buying decision. You canidentify lambs from flocks that ultrasound scan their lambs for muscleand fat depth in catalogues where M & F Scanned : Yes is printedbeside an animal ( See example page 4)

How to join LambPlus?Go to www.sheep.ie and print out a sign-up form and send it to Sheep Ireland along with anyother requested information. This process must be completed before November 14th.

15

LambPlus 20142014 has seen another huge rise in the number of pedigree breeders taking part in the LambPlusperformance recording scheme which has several positive impacts.

1. The number of recorded rams available to commercial farmers has increased2. The quantity of data has increased meaning more accurate evaluations3. Sheep Ireland has gained a greater understanding of how each bloodline is performing

within each breed4. This will increase the rate of genetic gain that can be achieved meaning a more profitable

sheep industry

Validation WorkThe data collected on the CPT and MALP (Maternal Lamb Producer Group) in 2013 & 14 have alsofound some very positive results.

It is often asked “Why do we need €uro-Star evaluations on our rams, sure can’t we tell by lookingat the rams which are the best”. Well while visual appraisal of a ram is still very important toensure an animal is physically correct, it is almost impossible to tell how a ram will perform onsome key performance traits by visually assessing the ram, for example Daughters Milk andNumber of Lambs born. This is where the evaluations becomes an essential tool in making sureyou give yourself the best chance of selecting the most profitable genetics.

The graph above is based on 3642 lambing records that were collected on the CPT and MALP overthe past two years. The lambs in this study were all from ewes that had an accuracy greater than50% on the Number of Lambs born trait.
