Lamentations 3:2-26

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who

seeks him; it is good to wait quietly

for the salvation of the Lord.

Ecclesiastes 9:17

The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts

of a ruler of fools.

Proverbs 17:1

Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting,

with strife.

Isaiah 32:17

The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be

quietness and confidence forever.

1 Peter 3:3-5

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it

should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way

the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They

submitted themselves to their own husbands,

Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Psalm 46:10-11

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among

the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord Almighty is with

us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Be Still and Know

Can You Hear Me Now?

Page 9: Lamentations 3:2-26 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

We are afraid of Silence…

Let’s try a little experiment…

How did that feel? Was the silence, deafening?

Page 10: Lamentations 3:2-26 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

Why are we afraid of the Silence? The irony is, in silence we are most likely to hear God.

Most likely for us silence means that we aren’t TALKING.

When we’re not talking we feel like we’re not in CONTROL.

Page 11: Lamentations 3:2-26 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

This feels strange to us because our world (modern America) is built around us being in CONTROL.

Technology is all about CONTROL,I don’t mean to suggest that technology is

bad but there are some consequences to our our faith if we’re not careful.

Page 12: Lamentations 3:2-26 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

We truly believe that nothing is outside our control…

We think we’re in control.

The truth is, we’re not in control. Death always drives the fastest car…

Remember Sandy…

Page 13: Lamentations 3:2-26 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

So, we’re not in control

But, we like to think we are, so we design and insulate our lives to give us the illusion of control…

The Bobs said it best in a song…

Page 14: Lamentations 3:2-26 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

In other words…

If we want to go deeper spiritually…

Psalm 46:10, “Be Still…”

Jesus knew the value of being still…

Page 15: Lamentations 3:2-26 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord

Sometimes our idea of getting away is just another part of our illusion…

Quietness, being still, is more about inside space than outside space.

Be still and know that I am God,and you are not.

Hymn #108

The Lord is in His holy temple; Let all the earth keep silence before Him.Keep Silence, (PAUSE)

Keep Silence, (PAUSE)

Keep Silence before Him.

“Only speak if you can improve the silence.”

Is it possible to live a deeper spiritual life and a noisy life?

NO, we have to be intentional about building quietness, stillness, into our lives.

Who do you think is the author of NOISE?

Invitation

Our efforts will be rewarded…

Psalm 37:7-11…

Habakkuk 2:20 The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.

In silence will you come to God today…
