A Publication of The Presbyterian Church, Fredericksburg, Virginia Lamp Led by the Holy Spirit, we glorify, nurture, witness.
June 2016
“Christians are made, not born.” These words of a well-known third century theologian bring
light to the fact that following Jesus Christ is not something that
comes naturally without faith, commitment, and training.
Since December of last year, twelve Explorers, with their
Covenant Partners, parents, and confirmation leaders as guides,
have been journeying toward a foundational understanding of
Presbyterian faith, tradition, and practices, operating from the
perspective that the Christian faith is more than a mere recitation
of facts – it is a way of life together. It is loving God with all our
whole being and loving our neighbors as we love ourselves.
In this way, the journey of confirmation has as its goal
discipleship, helping form people who more closely resemble
disciples of Jesus Christ in their lifestyle, beliefs, and values. On
June 5, we will receive these young people, following their pro-
fessions of faith, as active members of the church.
Confirmation is a major step in one’s life-long faith journey, but
it is not the only step. Please keep them in your prayers as they
and all of us continue to seek to follow Jesus Christ.
Peace,

Sacred Dance Ensemble “Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face;
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.”
When Helen Howarth Lemmel wrote this hymn, I imagine that she was hoping to inspire fellow
Christians to have a right perspective as they journeyed through this world. As a child, I loved the
melody, but was never moved by the words. Since becoming a sacred dancer, the words have taken
on new meaning for me. As a perfectionist and a late-to-bloom dancer, I am paralyzed by the thought
of dancing to sacred music before congregations. Each and every time I have danced for worship, I
learned to put my fears and perfectionism before God and have asked that He love the congregation
through me. I’m not sure I have ever done a perfect dance, but I have experienced transcendent
moments as I have poured my soul out in dance. I have learned that as I keep my eyes turned upon
Him, any dance becomes less a performance and more a conversation.
Join us for a conversation: Sundays 3:30-5:00 Undercroft. Vicky Wilder, 540-850-8913.
Pitch, Hit & Run and SOKS Camp
Thank you to members of our congregation who have volunteered for the past several
years to run the Pitch, Hit & Run and SOKS Camp.
On July 11-14, our church will lead SOKS Camp (Sema, Ota, Kua, Soma/Speak,
Dream, Grow, Read) for the children of Heritage Park apartments. We need volunteers
from teens to adults to help with baseball activities and field games from 12:45 to
3:30 p.m. at Sunshine Ballpark. You may help on all four days or just one. You don’t
need baseball skills, just a willingness to enjoy some time with kids! For more
information or to sign up, contact Jim Toler ([email protected]) or Bruce Harvey
([email protected]), .
We thank the Pitch, Hit, and Run volunteers who were at Sunshine Park on Saturday,
April 2: Tom Theado, Matthew Rembisz, Will Toler, Steve Davis, Michael Paul, Sydney
Coffman, Michele Coffman, Mary Lowman, Joe Valasko, Chris Hall, and Patty Toler.
Good Samaritan Fund With our Good Samaritan Fund we are able
to help our neighbors in need with utility
bills and gas for vehicles. Funds are paid to
the appropriate businesses instead of to indi-
viduals directly. We set aside $1,000 a
month with a limit of $100 per family. Over
a year’s time we give out over $12,000. The
fund is supported through your donations.
We thank you for your support and ask that
you consider a gift to help build up the fund
once again. If you have any questions,
please talk to a member of the staff.

Dear Bruce,
For 6th grader Jonathan Lambert, and many other children like him around the world, going to school means
hope.
“I am really happy because sometimes this is the only meal I get for the whole day,” he said. “My parents are
not able to buy me food.”
The Stop Hunger Now meals Jonathan eats every day at school give him more energy to study and focus, and
his grades have risen from Bs to As.
Jonathan is only one of the tens of thousands of children around the world who receive Stop Hunger Now
meals at school. By packaging meals with us, you have helped Jonathan grow and thrive. And because you
shared your time with us, children have hope for their future, families can take a step out of poverty, and com-
munities can prosper.
We are delighted to announce that the meals from your meal packaging event on 2/7/2016 have been
shipped in a container totaling 282,312 meals from our Richmond, VA warehouse. The meals will be re-
ceived by our in-country partner Highlands Friends of Haiti in Haiti.
The LaPleiade School and 7 other rural schools in the area of Cange, Haiti reach more than 2,500 needy school
children with their school lunch feeding program. Founded in 1995 in connection with Zanmi Lasante (Partners
in Health), La Pleiade has been faithfully serving to better the lives of children in rural Haiti, along with the net-
work of other rural schools. This feeding program furthers the goals of the schools as these meals have both a
short and long term effect on the community, schools, and on both the students and their families. When students
are hungry, grades suffer. With meals, health improves, grades improve, and school attendance improves. A hot
meal at school is often the only food these students will receive.
Visit www.stophungernow.org for more information about how you can support Stop Hunger Now and con-
tinue your involvement in the fight against hunger. Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/
stophungernow for updates, videos and photos from the field.
Thank you for volunteering with Stop Hunger Now. We truly appreciate your dedication and commitment to
the vision of a world without hunger.
Gratefully,
Mike Nelson

Massanetta Springs Middle School Conference The Middle Schoolers are heading to Massanetta Springs for the Middle School Conference
from June 21-24. We’ll enjoy 4 days of faith-building, fun, and fellowship. Please be in prayer
for our group!
Summer Youth Group We’re getting together throughout the summer for a few events. These gatherings are open to anyone, rising 6th
graders through graduated seniors. We hope you can join us!
Games & Carl’s on June 19: Summer is the best time for afternoons outside, and Carl’s only makes them better! Meet
at church at 2:00 p.m. We’ll walk to Old Mill Park, grab Carl’s on the way, and play games when we get there. We’ll
return to the church by 4:30 p.m. Come dressed to play with sneakers, and don’t forget you need cash for Carl’s!
Kings Dominion on July 7: We’re going to Kings Dominion for an entire day of fun. The
water park, Soak City, is included in the ticket price, so it’s like getting two for the price of
one! We’ll meet at the church at 9:00 a.m. so that we can be there when the park opens at
10:30 a.m. We will be back to church by 8:30 p.m. Come ready for a day of fun - don’t forget
to bring swimsuit, towel, and money for lunch, dinner, drinks, and treats in the park! Ticket
prices depend on how many people can join us. If we make it to 15 people buying tickets with
our group, tickets are $35. If we have 14 people or under, they are $55. Please send Rachel an
email by Sunday, June 26, if you’re interested in joining us, and make sure to mention if you
already have a season pass. She will be in touch regarding the final ticket price by June 29, and
asks that you either send in a check (made payable to The Presbyterian Church) for the ticket
before the event, or bring one with you on July 7!
Cave Quest VBS: June 26th-30th VBS is almost here, so don’t forget to register for an awesome week of fun!
Come see Robin & Rachel on Sundays between services at the VBS table. Want
to help with VBS but are unable to volunteer that week? How about donating or
letting us borrow: large brown craft paper; cardboard boxes; blue, gray, brown
tarps; hula hoops; small kiddie pool.
If you have something that would be a great decoration for a cave theme or
can donate one of the above items, contact Robin Joel, 229-1421,
([email protected]) or Rachel Hole, 903-0677, ([email protected]).

Construction Update We apologize for the inconvenience of
the construction/reconstruction taking
place over the brick patio entrance to the
Education Building. This patio surface
covers a large room area where the HVAC and mechanical
equipment for the Sanctuary and Education buildings is
located, and there are issues of rain water leaking through
the waterproofing membrane. Attempts have been made to
correct this by removing and replacing portions of the brick
surface and re-waterproofing specific areas but this has not
been completely successful. The decision has been made
by the contractor to remove the entire surface and
completely redo the waterproofing membrane and resurface
the patio. All this work is being done under warranty by the
contractor at no cost to the church. We appreciate your
patience.
