Introduction to Lamplight News

Welcome to the first edition of Lamplight

News; formerly known as Cogs N' Gears newsletter. Credit for the renaming of this newsletter goes to Mike Diamond. Thank you, Mr. Diamond, for your entry, and thank you to everyone else who sent in submissions. We had some great name suggestions, which made it all the harder to pick!

As most of you already know, the relaunch

of the Steampunk Illumination Society's newsletter become important because we felt like we just weren't reaching enough people and information can always use a helping hand to get out into the world. So we decided to breath life into this with the help of so many willing and wonderful people.

Each month, we aim to deliver to you news

that you can use. We welcome those helpful hints and tips. We want to spotlight the various talents out there. We want to help you out, and the only way to do this is to help us out. Even if you don't write, you can still contribute to this newsletter. Send in poetry, drawings, your best recipe, sewing tips, photos of your latest completed project, stories, upcoming events, classifieds, convention write ups (yes they can be anonymous!), shout outs to friends, and more!

Have something to send in, or an article

idea? Please click [email protected], and send in your submission. If you send an article for consideration to be published, please be sure to send it as a .txt form. The editor uses Open Office for all of the documents, and so Word documents often don't like to open properly. So your content could be all jumbled up or even unable to be opened. If you have photos to accompany, and you want them to appear in certain order, just make sure to include breaks in your text and put [insert photo 1 here]. We'll do the rest!

All submissions are due by the first week

of each month. Publications of this newsletter will come out the second week of each month. Lastly, please make sure any and all content you submit is

suitable for all audiences. Corrections and responses to editorial pieces are welcomed and should be directed to [email protected] with the subject line Newsletter Response/Correction, and the name of the article (if any). Those will be published in the following month's newsletter.

Until next time....

Special Announcements

Last year we had our very first SIS

community picnic. It was a great time had by many, with plenty of great food, and good fun. We decided we couldn't skip the chance at making this an annual event. While the weather threatened to rain on our “parade” last year, we still enjoyed the cool weather, but decided that this time, we'd try making this happen during the fall time. During our 44th meeting, several members discussed options for dates and the weekend before Thanskgiving was mentioned as a decent possibility. Many felt like this was a great idea. Not only is it going to be a Steampunk Thanksgiving style picnic, it's going to be a Steampunk invasion at the ZOO!

What better a place to invade in our

Steampunk best, than the Fort Worth Zoo? Well, ok... I'm sure you can think of many place, but really this one is just plain out fun. The Fort Worth Zoo is prepared to have the Steampunk community bring a little fresh air into their “wild” worlds and quite excited at that! Of course we want you to be comfortable, above all else, so if you're just not up to wearing your Steampunk best, don't sweat it! Everyone of all ages is welcomed. If you're interested, then check out the details here or here and let us know you want to go so when we update the events with news, you will be certain to get the newest details right away!

Page 2

Special Announcements (continued)

The date for this event has been set to

November 18th 2012 from 10am to 2pm (for the Zoo portion) and 2pm to 6pm (for the picnic portion). You may come to one or the other, or both even. It's entirely up to you. We encourage bringing your favorite dish along, but understand if you're just not able to. You're still welcomed. Pets are also welcomed (on leashes)! So save the date, if you haven't already!

SteampunkIS Minutes

The Steampunk Illumination Society holds

meetings twice a month, except for in the summer time. After each meeting, minutes are released for those who missed the meeting and want to know what went on. Here's the minutes from September 22nd's meeting:

Steampunk Illumination SocietyMeeting Minutes for September 23rd 2012Meeting XLIV at Manske Library, Farmers Branch, Tx

Meeting called to order at 2:07pm by Captain Hopkins

Welcome to new members, Phil and his wife. Thank you to all for the goodies and supplies brought to the meeting. Big thank you to Kathy and Jonathon Morgan for their continued help in securing Manske Library for meeting space.

Total attendance: 17.

Thoughts being sent out to the Morgans as Kathy unexpectedly headed to the ER via ambulance with a likely heart attack. She was loosing consciousness and blood pressure was very poor. She's currently in ICU now being closely monitored but reported as being stable. SIS sends their healing thoughts and prayers out to them both during these hard times.

SIS annual picnic time coming up. Possibly make it a Steampunk Thanksgiving together. We are considering

making it a Zoo outing at Fort Worth Zoo, and then the second half of the day being a picnic. The picnic would take place next to the zoo since they have so many picnic areas near by.

Later on near March/April 2013, we spoke about going as a group to Dallas World Aquarium.

Discussion of the Steam train ride come back up again. As some may recall, two years ago we tried to set up with Puffy the Steam-train out at Grapevine Vintage Railroads. However, a week before our expedition, the train broke down. It has since not come back up, and as we understand it, the entire rail system there will be closing down. We don't know when, but back in February 2012, we spoke with workers there who let us know that TRE is coming through Grapevine and because of this, it's shutting down Grapevine Vintage Railroads. While we're sadden by the news, we have to look on to other trains. So we have two possibilities. There's one that runs from Palestine to Rusk county through Piney Woods, about 25 miles long. The other is "Big Boy" steam-train in Frisco. We're looking at both locations as a possibility sometime either at the end of this year, or start of 2013, depending on train schedules.

SIS took a two month break from meetings and the community responded well to it. It seemed to have given just enough downtime for everyone to start missing the meetups and be ready to come back to them. We asked how everyone felt about this and everyone agreed that it was a good move. We'll do this regularly now each summer to give downtime. In place of meetings, we'll look at setting up once a month outings as a group just for fun.

Children's book: "The Jupiter Chronicles: The Secret of the Great Red Spot" written by Leonardo Ramirez, is a 74 page small novel meant for youth around second grade. Recently, SIS teamed up with Mr. Ramirez to help get his book out there to the community. We'll at some point try to get this into a library to do a reading of the book by the author. The means of how this will be taking place, via live Skype or what, is unclear yet, but this is what we're working on at the moment.

City of Steam, Beta starting sometime in November. Beautiful game... talk about that and SIS's involvement, along with Geek convention demo. SIS has teamed up with Mechanist Games to help them bring their game to the gamer community looking to step into a Steampunk themed world. It's a free-to-play browser based game, and holds promise to being a very unique game all around.

SIS has decided to relaunch the newsletter, and bring a lot of life into it. Several volunteers have stepped up to the plate so that we have a variety in interesting reads to offer. We're looking for anyone wishing to share their drawings, photography, poetry, convention reviews, fashion tips, recipes, tips in re-inventing and up-cycling materials into wonderful new pieces, tips on using tools like for leather work and so forth, step-by-step tutorials with photos on making simple items, and more.. all pertaining to Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and so forth. Game reviews, book reviews, events coming up, birthday shout outs, good wishes to those who need them, congrats on those who've succeeded in their goals, and more are all things we aim to revive the newsletter with. First issue is aimed to be out the first week of October. Right away, we're asking the public to help us think of a new name for the newsletter. Send in suggestions to [email protected]. The winner will be credited for their contribution in the first newsletter, and we'll be sure to list their name in the rebuild of the new site for those who have made important contributions to various aspects of SIS.

Mechanical Grave - Filming will be taking place soon. We're reaching out to the community who have time to make props for the shoots. When we get a specific list of what is needed, we'll send out the word!

SIS website will be getting a complete make-over in the months to come. We'll be expanding our site to include various pages that include music, art, and so forth. So look forward to changes to come!

Marquis of Vaudeville announced at the Soiree on Saturday, September 22nd 2012, that on January 12th

2013 they will be holding another show very similar to Clockwork Wonderland, but this time inside of the House of Blues. So keep your eyes and ears open for this one! SIS is looking forward to helping out once more. So save the date and spread the word!!

My Wooden Leg, who played at Nightmare Machine back in March/April 2012, are on their way up to New York to debut their new album "Jealous Disco" on September 26th 2012. So be sure to check that out on Reverbnation if you're a fan. They were also interviewed over the summer on Track for Track with North Texas Art&Seek about their upcoming album release.

SIS members living in the Denton area, and who attended today's meeting, have agreed to look at locations in their area for helping SIS expand meetings to Denton area. If successful, we could have our first meeting there in November. Farmers Branch and Grand Prairie will remain in rotation.

Glitch Con 2012: Last Con on Alderaan!

Glitch Con 2012, held in August in

Bentonville, Arkansas billed it self as The Last Con on Alderaan. The Post Apocalyptic themed event included sessions on Gaming, Anime, SciFi, Fantasy and an entire track of Steampunk sessions. How geeky was this one? Well,

above the dance floor in a place of honor hung not a mirrored disco ball but a papier-mâché Death Star. Yeah, the nerd was strong with this one and it was all the better for it.

Vendors ran the gamut from stunning fantasy art

to home made jewelry created from destroyed motherboards to strange knitted dollies and some great SP wares. There were several folks doing hats of leather, felt, velvet and other bits and bobs. Some polymer sculpted beasties appeared both as knickknacks and adorning some spiffy jewelry items. Your erstwhile author did indeed trade for some of these pretties and had fun fitting a few of them in the proverbial overhead bin later.

Our friend, Peter Pixie, acted as MC for the main

room where the fun began with the requisite Opening/Welcome remember to eat and get at least

a couple of hours of sleep per night. There was an interesting and strikingly diverse Cosplay Costume and a Charity Ball to benefit a most worthy cause. The charity of choice was the Northwest Arkansas Fencing Club who gave some nice demos and talked about how fencing taught kiddos things like honor, respect, and dignity. Money collected helped to pay for classes and events for any area child who wanted to participate and those with disabilities.

Knocking about, selling wonderful

trinkets, and leading some of the SP panels were the splendid and perhaps ubiquitous crew of the Airship Isabella. Captain Whittaker and the crew had many interested participants in their sessions eager to learn more about Steampunk in general, how to mod weapons, create excellent leather and more. Attendees ranged from the more seasoned players to many newbies for whom this was either there first con or their first real exposure to our wonderful world of steam.

The main highlight for many was the Zombie

Prom on Saturday night with music provided by the peerless Marquis of Vaudeville (or perhaps their Zombie doppelgangers.) A professional make up artist was on hand to help you achieve the perfect if gory look for a donation. This unruly undead crowd seemed to have great fun even buying dead flower corsages for the occasion. The band, as usual, rocked the house there under the little Death Star.

Overall friends were made, games played,

stories shared, ideas bandied about and really – isn’t that what a good con is for? Here’s to seeing what our Northwest neighbors cook up for next year. Might just be worth a little road trip.

What's to Come?

So you want the dish on future plans? OK, just a

peek...

Sometime in December, SIS will be doing

another fencing session at Fencing Institute of Texas in Farmers Branch. What we don't know yet?

Will it be just for kids, or for both kids and adults, and when in December? Stay tuned!!

That's not enough, you say? Hmmm, well

about about this...

Rumor is, Jefferson, Texas has taken on

Steampunk for Christmas. If you attended Nightmare Machine in March/April 2012, then you recall the town of Jefferson. If not, you missed something quite unique. Our very presence there blew away the towns folk and left them with an overwhelming love of Steampunk. So much so that they have named themselves Jefferson Airship and they are putting on the Steampunk Christmas Ball on December 15th 2012. How's THAT for converting an entire city? Want the details? Check it out here!

This Spring, SIS will be planning a trip to

the Dallas World Aquarium as a group. Never been? Neither have I! So, let's get our gear on and head out to see some fish! Oh, we're also looking at trains. Steam trains that is! We don't know yet if we'll end up in Palestine, Texas or Frisco, Texas... but one way or another, we're going to ride a Steam train! So keep your peepers disrobed for those details to form.

Fact or Fiction ?

Since this is our very first round of Fact or

Fiction, we'll start with an easy one. Here's how we play:

You read the following information and write back to me to tell me what (if any) part of the following is fact, and what part (if any) is fiction. Send me your answer via email to [email protected], with the subject FACT OR FICTION. The ones who get it right will get a shout out for being smarty pants. The correct information will be released in next month's newsletter. Easy enough? Easy enough. OK... so let's get started!

Page 7

Fact or Fiction?(continued)

Each year, Macy's makes up their windows

for the holiday season. In 2010, Macy's theme that was chosen was Steampunk done in honor of Make-A-Wish foundation. As the article quotes: “this annual tradition can also reveal the ebb and flow of social interests. The “Make a Wish” windows mix old with new in the Steampunk tradition as we stand on the crossroads of technology and find our lives increasingly intertwined with machinery. It highlights the ways innovation has long intersected with creativity, driving mechanical advancements and encouraging us to dream larger. We’ve come a long way from a series of dolls and child-sized furniture.” Within one of the beautiful displays is an airship, and a gentleman sitting atop a Steam-train with a top hat adorned on his head and goggles, while gears spin behind him powering an invisible machine.

Caption That

If you don't know how this works, well allow me

to explain it for you and you can go from there. ;) Basically, you submit a caption for the photo below, and I'll post your submissions in the next newsletter. If you've got a photo you want to submit and have others try to caption, send 'em on over! Oh, just do us one favor... keep the submissions on the clean side. LOL! Here we go! Feel free to enlarge the photo to see it better...

Classifieds

Each month we'll run this section for folks

wishing to get their wares out there. A short 25 word ad with a phone number, email address, &/or website is welcomed. Have a garage sell going on, or a swap meet coming up? Let us know. Looking for something specific, or want to sell or trade something? Write to us! There's no charge to get your ad placed here. Music Spotlight

This month, our musical spotlight is

Darwin Prophet. Within the past year, she has made her way onto the scene and become a well known name through out the Steampunk circuit in Texas. Though, how much do we really know? Here's a chance to read an interview with Darwin herself.

How old were you when you began your musical interests? Within the bounds of linear time, my first professional band was at age 13. I came from two opera singers (who met at City Center Opera in NYC) - there have never been a time I can remember when I did not express myself musically. It is my emotional stability. The first song I learned on guitar was "Eleanor Rigby"

Who inspires you when you're writing your music? I am inspired mostly by literature & film and within those art forms the choice of subjects that I devour infinitely are mythology, history and science fiction. You see, the future past of my own literary history is built of the things I most adore. The specific list of "who" is as long as my life...

What are some of your most favorite experiences so far in your music career? Opening for Willie Nelson at Gilley's to a crowd of ten thousand was truly the only time I have heard what could be described as the "roar" of the crowd, there were so many voices that it became the sound of one. Being in Velvet Hammer in all ways, as we were courted by all the major labels, riding thru Hollywood in a limo, meetings with the industry

bigwigs, opening for legends like Kansas. King's X, and Robin Trower while making music that we lived and breathed, believed in with all our souls in a sisterhood that went beyond time, and frankly making music that was effortless and at the same time ingeniously complicated. Recording a track with Heart's Roger Fisher and Michael Derosier. Being a big Heart fan, it was really neat to have those two from the original band turn one of my songs into something that could have made it on "Little Queen", sonically, that is still a highlight.Making the record "Butterfly Tree" in Seattle with Rick Del Castillo, being half of the sound. I made the voice and melodies, he handled the music. It is a record of which I am still quite proud.Experiencing now with the Chronus Mirror, having dreamt of a sound in my head and watching it now blossom into its own unique creation.

If you could pick any venue in the world to play at, where would you go? The Library at Oxford University.

Did you ever think you'd end up in the Steampunk circuit when you first started your adventure? When I saw my first gathering of Steampunks, not only did I recognize where I belonged, I also felt understood and home. So yes, when I came to life as Darwin Prophet, soon thereafter I heard about Steampunk for the first time. As for the life before, the steps of the evolution, I went where the road took me. I had to study to become a country singer, a jazz singer,a metal singer, all those I worked to be, what is now here..this Literary Rock/Steam Pop...it is what I have become. This is my nature. My truest self.

There are rumors you have been in a movie or two before. Can you confirm these rumors? If they're true, can you tell us about them? Yes, I love film, I have been lucky enough to be an extra, even a featured one at times, in "Bad News Bears in Breaking Training", "Urban Cowboy", and "FM"..I got to be a zombie in a short and had my tongue cut off, and I was in a couple of videos too...the girl in the video for a Rick Derringer video (which I am never sure if it saw the light of day) and in Testament's remake of "Nobody's Fault"...that was just fun!

Page 9

Music Spotlight(continued)

And it was on Headbangers Ball, so I did get to be on MTV when is was MusicTeleVision (even tho I was acting and not singing!)

What is your ultimate goal in this all and where would you like to be in five years? In a five year mark, I would like to have accomplished thus: Make the first Chronus Mirror record, get to England - play Oscar Wilde's songs at Magdalen College in Oxford, have a graphic novel or even an animated film that is The Thematic History of Planet Mi, turn that into continuing episodes (in what ever form it finally manifests) that takes us outward to the Galaxy Solfege and back in Earth's history to Victorian England to my times with Oscar, back to the Round Table and Camelot, develop the Great War Cycle into what ever alternative universe that will create- I am about ten songs into that realm. I also have a divination game I have been developing. I would like in five years for the Chronus Mirror to be a multi faceted life form that creates art as an self - sustaining ecosystem that shelters and feeds my musical family.

Do you feel you belong in the Steampunk community? Yes. Here are people who are creative and thoughtful and interesting...I hope that those are qualities I possess as well.

Has the Steampunk community made you feel welcomed? Absolutely! Since we are all out of another time, so to speak, we are all in sync. I don't know if that makes sense, but ask a physicist, trust me, in our circles, throw a light wave, you will hit one!

Of all the events, that you are aware of, coming up in 2012-2013, which do you most look forward to being a part of? All of them, for divergent reasons...I can't wait for the Showdown at Unobtainium outside Austin, a nine foot high Tesla coil? A chance to meet those who are carrying the spirit of Tesla, Edison, Sarah Bernhardt, Lillie Langtry? Playing for three woman whom I admire, respect and adore?? I am speaking of Sam Tyler of the Mysterium, whom I owe so much to that I cannot even begin to say, but she knows. Maggie

Duval, whose presence is mighty and brilliant, I have longed wanted to work with her on a project, and Jo Rae DiMenno, whom I have known for centuries, who is blood sister of my life long photographer & friend, and is a powerhouse publicist. They are bigger than life to me. The Gray Ball because Oscar's Dorian Gray is putting on a fabulous event for our Mr Saturday's birthday and we get to play a palace! Jefferson Steampunk Christmas, because I am humbled and honored by their having us as the headliner in beautiful Jefferson, which now has so much meaning for me. Thanks to you Stephanie, and to Fate changing our dates and putting the Mirror smack dab on Oscar's footsteps 130 years to the day later! And we get to play All Con in 2013! I have heard so much about this con and I can't wait to experience it.

What sort of music do you enjoy listening to when you're not creating/playing your own?Kate Bush is always near, Mozart, Royal Fingerbowl, Jellyfish, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, John Lennon are mainstays. I enjoy listening to lots of things, but I hear music in silence too.

Which musical artists inspire you most? See the list above, add the Beatles - that was the dictionary everything I adore was built upon. The three "B's" Beatles,Kate Bush n David Bowie.

Recently you had the experience of creating a musical video for Don't Panic. What inspired this idea, and how do you feel about the outcome of the musical video? The song was inspired by a short lived romance with a respectable musical talent who was a different generation but shared my deep affection and immersion in Star Trek and Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As time crafted that song, it became more about the influence of those two universal talents and the connection they have formed between so many people. When I met my director Tim Stevens, he understood that sense of humor and wonder that comes from those places. So he wanted to pay homage not only to them but to the lo-fi humouresque sci-fi that inspired them to create their universes. I love how it turned out, I think Tim is a formidable talent and will be a greatly respected filmmaker. Besides we had a blast, and it shows.

Page 10

Music Spotlight (continued)

Do you have plans to make any more music videos for your other songs? I would love to.

What do you do for fun when you're not playing, singing, or writing music? I read. If there is a super hero film to be watched, count me in. Historical fiction too...Downton Abbey is thru the Great War, I cannot wait for what is next! If Stephen Fry is in something, or written something,I am there and when I have a minute, I will catch up with QI on you tube. I was SO excited to see him in that last Sherlock Holmes as Mycroft. I can imagine no one else as Mycroft Holmes. I don't get to Museums enough, but that is another habit I miss...I went more in Houston and New York, but I would like to revisit that pleasure. I also haunt half price books and thrift stores, that particular happy relaxing time I call "booking and thrifting afternoons"...

Do you have other talents? I paint, sketch, read divination with my game and runes, sew/redesign clothes, play with photoshop and make posters and album art. I would like to be better at everything. I think that is why I have done my best to step out of linear and into the concentric eclectic collective, I needed to find more time.

Thank you, Darwin, for your time and thoughtful answers that allow us some insight on who you are and what makes you, you! It was a pleasure interviewing you.

Thank you Stephanie. I just got home from a DPCM show at the pizza lounge, the state fair was going on, we had a good night, and this was a perfect nightcap. Thanks for thinking of me.

Kids Voice

I asked a question I realized I hadn't

thought yet to ask my own children. Without much editing (other than a few spelling errors), this is what they answered when I asked:

“What does Steampunk mean to you? What do you think of when you hear the word?”

What Steampunk is to Me by Autumn

I still don't fully understand Steampunk, but here is my view. Steampunk is 1800's kind of stuff. Victorian age Steampunk! For me, I learned about Steampunk from movies like Wild Wild West, Ember City, Steamboy, 9, Around the World in 80 Days, and many others. Steampunk is historically amazing! But what I like the most about Steampunk is that it's a lot like Halloween every meeting. I have friends with me and we are wearing costumes like it's Halloween, but just without the candy.

What Steampunk is to Me by Nathaniel

Steampunk, to me, is fun. The gadgets, the games, the guns... I love it! I can't wait every time a meeting comes up. My favorite movies are Steamboy, Wild Wild West, and Around the World in 80 Days. I also love the educational side. I did not know that Tesla invented so many cool things, like the death ray. He's my inspiration to make cool things.

And there you have it; what

Steampunk means to kids. Do you have kids? Would they like to write what Steampunk means to them? Have them send in their article, and a drawing too if they like. We'll publish it next month!

In the Theaters

Who doesn't love the movies? Well this

section is exactly all about this topic. We'll cover movie reviews (without spoilers) for what's coming soon and you, the reader, can write in to tell us what your review was, or if you agree (or disagree) you can write about that too! At the end of this year, we'll write up a review of what we believe the top 10 movies of the year were, and the 10 worst movies of the year too. Though, we need YOUR help to determine this. So write in your list, and if we get repeated hits on the same titles, we'll bump it up the list until we finally have our top ten best and worst.

Of course, we won't always cover Steampunk

inspired movies, but we will try our best to pick them out when they're obvious. So do expect a few “oddballs” to pop up here and there.

First on the list: Tai Chi 0 (Watch the trailer)

This is the first

movie of it's kind, being a Steampunk style martial arts movie that is, & it means something certainly new and exciting for the Steampunk crowd. Viewing the teaser trailer, you're given a sense excitement to plenty of action for an entirely new look at Steampunk. Though,

I also get a sense that this is not a wildly popular movie here in America because I've yet to see a single television advertisement for the coming of this movie, or even a trailer at the movies themselves like you normally see when you're already at the theater watching something else, and all the previews come on before the show to get you interested in what's to come. I can only find this online, and that is after I do a search, myself, for

the movie. Even Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer had more advertising, and that wasn't too much on it's own. Part of me has to wonder if this is because what I've seen, so far, in trailers is that is the movie will appear in all subtitles, and it's not a single release movie, but a prequel to subsequent movies. I've seen “trilogy” mentioned elsewhere upon a search. I did happen upon a review, while searching around for more background information on this movie. I'll go ahead and share it here:

“First off, I would recommend Tai Chi 0-- if only I can decide whether to recommend watching in the theaters or waiting to watch it back-to-back with its sequel on DVD... Cos most of my issues with Tai Chi 0 has to do with how it tries (& fails?) to "stand alone" as an inconclusive (inconsequential?) prequel. I mean, how would you feel if you found out that the hilariously "over-sold" trailer (in English, Mandarin and various Chinese dialects) circulating for Tai Chi 0 is actually a trailer for-- and contains footage from-- both this movie and its sequel?

It is also easy to see why Tai Chi 0 elicits such a wide variety of opinions-- it has something old and something new, and they are not so much "meshed together" as "layered on"... The old stuff is everything you would expect from an old-school kung-fu flick, and the new stuff is the latest fads in video-game aesthetics-- so depending on which way you lean, you might find as much "forced humor" (if you expected kung-fu drama) as "forced melodrama" (if you expected video-game hi-jinks). Nowhere as wacky and creative as Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer nor as elegant and nostalgic as Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, director Stephen Fung's Tai Chi is more of a new take on the "kung-fu film as comic-book fantasy" genre in the vein of the "Storm Riders/Warriors" franchise.

And as someone who enjoys an old-school kung-fu flick as much as the latest video games, Tai Chi 0 literally pulled me around in different directions. On the one hand, I liked that the corny 1970's convention of kung-fu actors shouting out their styles/moves now comes with animated sur-titles and graphics; on other hand, the graphical "overlay" somewhat distracts from the sheer joy of watching Sammo Hung's seasoned fight choreography being pulled off by actors who's gone through martial arts training.

Page 13

In the Theaters (continued)

So for my tastes, the core story and conflicts are presented too fluffily while the visual gimmicks are sprinkled on too liberally.

Perhaps this is due to Tai Chi 0 being a prequel that sets up a main story and conflict which will only be seen in later movies-- despite a lengthy introduction of the protagonist's story arc early on, Tai Chi 0 is really about how the old master Chen and his daughter deal with the forced relocation of their village. And fortunately, veteran actor Tony Leung easily carried off the central drama of film as the old master Chen, while the newcomers simply played up their kung-fu movie stereotypes (feisty girl, dorky guy, etc). Tai Chi 0 starts hitting its stride in its 2nd half-- when this historically relevant but made-up narrative (the original Chen village,

now a small town, is still around) comes to the fore-- and doesn't let up until old master Chen finally unleashes his kung-fu.

I mean, for all of Tai Chi 0's "light touch", there's no disguising the fact that this is an old-school "blood-and-gluts" kung-fu story in a historical-fantasy setting-- with 3 on-screen deaths of named characters in the first 15 minutes

and another in the later half of the movie-- and had it gotten much better writing and directing, I'm sure I wouldn't have missed any of post-production stylistics one bit. Cos the final and best fight in the movie for me involved nothing more than getting Tony Leung into 2 months of Tai Chi boot camp, some good old-fashioned wire-work, and a big wind machine. But in contrast, one of my favorite bits was the protagonist running around the village like a first person RPG video gamer searching for a quest reward... See what I mean about this movie

tearing me apart?

If I sound like I'm quibbling, I am.... Tai Chi 0 is quite enjoyable, if not really memorable, and does a good enough job setting up the sequel. But as a kung-fu film, it is just nowhere as coherent or satisfying as the classics-- cos where Stephen Chow or Ang Lee would take great care to introduce audiences to the "reality" of their kung-fu fantasies and set things up for dramatic/comic effect, Stephen Fung crams the protagonist's entire back-story into the first 15 minutes of the movie before dropping him into a side role-- and then randomly (cleverly?) adds glowing eyes, X-ray film perspectives and even a First-Person Sequence?!

So in the end, pardon me for submitting this review but reserving my vote until I get to see the sequel...” (Written by dont_b_so_BBC)

Decent review...indeed. So, show of hands!

Who will be gearing up and headed out to see this independent film when it hits theaters? Will you share with us your review of TaiChi 0 after you've seen it? Even better, send in photos of you and your group if you attend in gear. We'd love to spotlight you!

Artist Spotlight

This month, we

shine the spotlight on local Texas Steampunk artist, Joseph Hernandez. His talent for his beautiful drawings have become well known among the Texas Steampunk community, and quite possibly beyond. Having drawn several different Steampunks

from within the community, Joseph always seems to capture something striking and unique in each one.

Page 14

Artist Spotlight (continued)

How long have you been drawing? I tell people I've been drawing as long as I could hold a pencil.

What sort of drawings do you most like to draw? I mostly enjoy doing portraits.

Who would you say is your Muse? I have several Muses. Friends who's features are such that they just inspire me to draw them!

What is your inspiration for drawing? My

inspiration for drawing is usually the peace that comes with it. I'm transported to another world and lose all track of time! Its a good escape and very soothing.

In your best description, tell us what sets the mood for a good drawing atmosphere... A good drawing atmosphere is one that is quiet and free of distractions. I don't listen to music. Just my thoughts.

I understand you are a photographer as well. Do you consider yourself a pro at photography? I don't consider myself a professional photographer. I simply enjoy it as a hobby. I took a class in college where I learned darkroom techniques. Of course that's now been replaced by Photoshop.

What are some of your favorite things/people to draw? I enjoy drawing women. I like the curves and simplicity of their features. Men are hard angels and short lines.

How long would you say you've been into the Steampunk scene? I've been a part of the Steampunk scene since New Year's Eve and the Difference Engine World Conference. My wife and daughter had been in Steampunk for a couple of years before. But once I attended my first con I was hooked! Fell in Love with Marquis of Vaudeville

and am happy to say I've been making friends with the guys in the band and their ladies.

What about Steampunk do you feel drawn to the most? What I love about Steampunk is all the costumes, especially the period style of dress. Its an escape. An opportunity to step outside of yourself. Heck, I just enjoy playing dress up!

Do you have a character? If so, tell us a little about him (or her?). I do have a character. His name is Loki. He's Western Steampunk. He was conceived at the Jefferson Steampunk Invasion when I bought a pair of hand painted goggles from Suzeaux (I also sat in on a character development class chaired by her and other members of ASI). They are white with playing card suits painted on them. So I've been building his persona around that making him a card player. I'm currently developing a comic book around him and many of the people I have met at these events.

What has been your most memorable Steampunk event to attend so far? My most memorable event I've attended? I'll have to say Aetherfest. Loved the hotel and the parade down to the Alamo for a group picture.

Do you belong to an airship yet, and if not, would you join one? I'm a part of the Airship Serenity. My closest friends are all in it and we enjoy getting together and running amok at all the events!

Is your artwork just a hobby at this time, or do you have plans to make it into a career? I'm currently employed as a graphic designer and my drawings which you see posted on Facebook are my hobby. But I do hope to break into comics one day. Hence, the Steampunk comic book I mentioned I was developing. I should also say that several of my Steampunk friends along with my wife are contributing towards it's conception.

Page 15

Artist Spotlight (continued)

Do you have any drawings that are in color? I do have drawings that are in color. I scan my pencils into the computer and then color them in Photoshop. I've just bought a watercolor set and plan on experimenting with that medium as well. I have worked with airbrush in the past and color pencils are another favorite.

Have you ever had any of your work published before? I'm happy to say that I am a published artist. I started at age seven when I entered a contest in the newspaper and received $2. I was hooked from then on. I continued to submit drawings that were also printed. In college I interned at the Dallas Morning News, as an artist, and saw my work printed daily. After I graduated, I landed a job designing and illustrating children's books for Barney, the purple dinosaur!

Do you listen to any music while you draw? If so, what sort of music helps you to create your works of art? Again, as far as music goes, no, I prefer working in quiet.

Thank you for doing this interview with me, Joseph. I appreciate your time, and

talent in this community.

* The photo included with this inter view is of Tiffany Hinnen, and is one which Joseph says many people seem to favor. It is, indeed, a beautiful drawing.

A Good Read

We don't have a book review yet, but don't

worry. We have four people working on a few books to write up a review for next month's newsletter. We'll include a children's book as well, for our younger audiences. So make sure you check back here next month!

Got a book you want to review? Read a good

Steampunk, sci-fi, fantasy, historical, or romance lately? Become a reviewer for the Lamplight News! You don't have to be a speed reader to be a reviewer. You can write once a month, once every two months, or even be a quarterly reviewer. We need variety in reviewers, so we'll try to have several folks doing reviews, since everyone has different tastes in books.

If you're an author and would like to submit

your title for review, please feel free to send us an e-copy or a regular copy to give to our reviewer. You may also just write in and let us know that you have a book coming out soon and we'll be happy to include in here in our newsletter. This includes e-publications, independent publications, comic books, and short stories.

What's Cookin' Good Lookin' ?

Cooking in the 1800's really isn't thought of

by too many these days, but if you were to ever have a glimpse into that timeline, you might just be fascinated and quite impressed with the number of wonderful dishes that were cooked and somehow have become nearly a lost art with our current technology and high availability pre-made meals at our fingertips. That time was a time that recipes were treasured and usually only passed down from family member to family member. Often, these recipes would have been uniquely and sometimes artfully written as opposed to much of what we see today in regards to recipes.

Page 16

What's Cookin' Good Lookin'? (continued)

While reading some of them, you may catch

yourself smiling, feeling curious, or even letting out a slight laugh at some of the wording that was chosen for describing how to achieve the desired dish results. Here's a wonderful example of a very simple recipe that has been around for as long as man has figured out how to make a soup with a chicken and a handful of vegetables.

Chicken Soup.Clean and wash a large fat chicken, put it on to boil in about 4 quarts of water, to which add 1/2 a teacupful of rice, 1 onion cut fine, 4 or 5 turnips pared and cut into small pieces, 1 dessertspoonful of white sugar (a little sugar, not more than a tablespoonful to 3 or 4 quarts, may be added scorched brown, to any soup while boiling, with advantage), a little sweet marjoram, with salt and red-pepper to taste. After boiling over a slow fire for rather more than an hour put in 6 white potatoes, pared, washed, and cut in quarters, which, as soon as done, add a little parsley minced fine. When done, if not sufficiently seasoned, more may be added. Place the chicken on a dish, which garnish with sprigs of double parsley, the soup in a tureen, and send to table hot.

Quite simple but the way it is worded, you

can nearly see the lady of the house following along with the recipe in her home, stirring the cast iron pot over the stove fire. You can even imagine a delightful smell wafting

around the home. I'd certainly like to be invited to that dinner.

Now, how many of you have ever heard of

Queen's Sauce? This, apparently, was once prepared here back in the early 1800's as well. The question here is what was this sauce served with, or was it actually a meal all on it's own. Anyone who knows, we'd love to hear from you! Here's the directives for creating this interesting dish:

Queen's SauceSimmer crumbs of bread in good gravy, until it is quite thick, take it off the fire, and add a few sweet almonds pounded, 2 hard yolks of eggs, and a breast of fowl roasted, all pounded very fine; boil a sufficient quantity of cream to your sauce, and sift all together, then add pepper and salt, and warm it without boiling.

How about some dessert to go with all of

this wonderful food? Here's another authentic dish from the early 1800's:

Transparent Pudding.Beat up 8 eggs, put them in a stew-pan with half a pound of sugar, the same of butter, and some grated nutmeg, and set it on fire, stirring it till thickens; then pour it into a basin to cool. Set a rich paste round the edge of your dish, pour in your pudding, and bake it in a moderate oven. A delicious and elegant article.

Perhaps pudding is not your thing. Well,

surprisingly, pudding was the most popular dish of that time simply because you could make near anything into a pudding. It's true! I have recipes for carrot pudding, potato pudding, bread pudding, quince pudding, suet pudding (I had to look up what suet even was!), cabinet pudding, vermicelli pudding, batter pudding, newmarket pudding, indian meal pudding, boiled pudding, plain pudding, and the list just seems endless. It's pudding paradise... if you like pudding that is. Otherwise, you might see pies being the next dessert in line. There's a few odds and ends that make it on the dessert tray though, and I'll post one for the sake of curiosity.

Page 17

What's Cookin' Good Lookin'? (continued) Indian Pone.Put on one quart of water in a pot, as soon as it boils stir in as much Indian meal as will make a very thin batter. Beat it frequently while it is boiling, which will require ten minutes; then take it off, pour it in a pan, and add one ounce of butter, and salt to taste. When the batter is luke-warm stir in as much Indian meal as will make it quite thick. Set it away to rise in the evening; in the morning make it out in small cakes, butter your tins and bake in a moderate oven. Or the more common way is to butter pans, fill them three parts full, and bake them. This cake requires no yeast.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? It'd be

what we refer to today as "corn bread". I find it quite fascinating how corn meal used to be called Indian meal back then. Even in cooking, there's glimpses of the history we all come from.

If you're feeling creative and up for an

authentic challenge, try cooking one of the above recipes, and send in your photo(s) of your results. Let us know how it tasted/turned out and I'll be

sure to add your results to the next edition of this newsletter. Got an authentic 1800's recipe of your own to share?

Send that in as well. It doesn't even have to be a recipe for food. As most well know, recipes back then were kept for multiple things beyond just cooking. Here's an example below:

Remedy for Chronic Cough. The following is very serviceable in common obstinate coughs, unattended with fever. Take of tincture of tolu, 3 drachms; elixir of paregoric, 1/2 an ounce; tincture of squills, 1 drachm. Two teaspoonsful to be taken in a tumbler of barley

water going to bed, and when the cough is troublesome.

There were even recipes for making your

own pills, making "electuary" mixtures, and the most unpleasant... "clyster" treatment recipes, which translates into modern medical terminology as an enema. I'll share some of those in the next edition. For now, I believe I've given some great examples of how recipes went beyond just cooking.

So next time you're in the kitchen, what

will you be cooking up?

~Article written by Stephanie M. (StaticNomad)

Contests

Every month, we'll run a contest for artwork

to be featured as the cover photo of our newsletter. We ask that art work you submit belongs to you, and is appropriate for all audiences to view. If we receive only one entry that month, we will use the entry we get, provided it is within said rules. Credit to the artist will be given, as well as a link of their choosing to their website, business, or portfolio. Please be aware that the title must be placed over the photo (as seen in this edition's cover), but if entrants are not happy with the idea of Lamplight News title being placed on top of the image, entrants are more than welcomed to draw/add in the newsletter name into their work (and please make sure to also include “a publication of The Steampunk Illumination Society” somewhere within as well). Entries are due by the first week of November 2012. Please send your submissions in, and if we receive more than one entry, we will have a public vote on the entries. This is not only a chance for you to have your work showcased, but to also advertise your talents and your business as well, if you have one. If your entry wins, we will contact you with a request for a little more information for our readers to read on and bring in more interest to the winning artist.

Community Activity Spotlight

In September 2012, I noticed some stirring

in the southern region of Texas and it was

Territories of Houston Steampunk (ToHS) that had begun organizing meetings as a group effort. As with all groups, discussion of ideal meeting places were hashed out and eventually agreed that they'd found a suitable location to have their official monthly gatherings at. As reported, their first

meeting went splendidly, having a decent size turn-out and plenty of friendly and productive conversation. Their second meeting is coming up this Friday, October 12th from 7PM to 10PM in Houston, Tx. If you're in the are and looking for a group to join up with, I highly recommend this group as they seem to be quite an enthusiastic bunch to be involved with. We're quite happy to see regions come to life over the past year, and hope that soon, we will see similar stirrings in the West Texas region. Included are a few photos taken by Territories of Houston Steampunk member, Penelope McFaden. Thank you to both ToHS and Penelope for allowance of photography and information to be shared!

SteampunkIS InformationOur mission statement:

1. The Steampunk Illumination Society was formed with the ideal to educate and bring together on neutral ground, all those who currently, or wish to, practice the art of Steampunk. This is in an attempt to form a closer tie between everyone in and around the community and using this relationship, we will be able to spread the word about the wonders of Steampunk and all of it's beauty.

2. As a group, we are here to help the individual members, and their own respective groups achieve more than would be possible to with each on our own. We seek no control over individual, nor group actions, but merely wish to lend a hand when it is requested. Be it through organizational, promotional, educational, or simply the combined knowledge base and resources of the group.

3. We are a family oriented organization, and will do our best to ensure everyone of every age and ability is able to participate in the meetings. That said, we do not restrict our members from holding, or promoting, events aimed for certain ages or skill levels. We love and enjoy our differences instead of trying to treat everyone as a clone(no offense intended to any clones which decide at some future point to join) Our goal is to be inclusive as possible of all the facets of Steampunk, which is still a developing, active, culture. Be they, Performing artists from musicians to actors, all the various media artists from Clothiers to Authors, and the list continues almost indefinitely.

4. We are all here together because we enjoy at least one aspect of the Steampunk culture and want to find some way to make it better, while enjoying ourselves along the way as much as possible. We believe that some part of this culture is worth sharing with the rest of the world. We believe that the current culture of the disposable world is not a sustainable way of life, and want to incorporate more re-purposing into our lives, instead of into landfills. We can then take this knowledge and, as a contagious idea, Spread our thoughts to the rest of the world.
