TRANSCRIPT
Growing up, I was blessed to have a wonderful minister whose impact on my life was great. Rev. W. McCarl Roberts was pastor of Arnolia U.M.
Church for 12 of my most formative years. It was through him that I learned the im-portance of preaching in a way that helps folks find strength for the week ahead. To this day I still get advice and support from
the man who will always be my pastor.
After so long a tenure, it was hard for our congregation to say goodbye as he moved on to the next pastorate. Years later, Rev. Roberts related to me the story of his first meeting with the Pastor-Parish
Relations Committee at that new church.
The members went around the table sharing what they wanted in a pastor. One said: “In this church, you’re only as good as your last sermon. We want top notch preaching”. Another said: Every
member should be visited; while another stated that the pastor needed to sing in the Choir. Someone else wanted the pas-tor in the office for drop-ins every day and have coffee ready. One man said he wanted Bible Studies every week through-out the year and the pastor should lead the youth group weekly. A lady stated that counseling sessions were important and the last pastor was on two District and Conference Committees. The final person said: “Yes, and you need to be on the Church Softball team. The last pastor led us to victory”. At that point, the Commit-tee Chair said “The only thing left is for you to walk on water”, which introduced a little levity into a stressful situation. Be-cause, of course, one, also, needs time for prayer and devotions, family life and prep-
aration time for many church tasks.
The point is this, most of us are periodical-ly faced with unrealistic expectations (continued on Page 5 ….CUMC Pastor’s Corner)

Did you ever notice that no two days are alike? Even though we are in the practice of watching the calendar for spe-cial dates (and those special dates repeat themselves on schedule), no two days are alike. We may have the same general daily routine, but the things that happen in between those events are never the same—even the events of and during those “daily routines” are never the same. Each moment is different from the preced-ing. Change is around us all the time—every day, every hour.
So….what’s the point? The point is that we should be used to change in our lives. That doesn’t mean that we can’t schedule things or events, but it does mean that we should not be surprised or discouraged when everything doesn’t fall into place on schedule or by the original plan. Have our national, or state, or local governments ever completed a project on time? Have any government bills been passed without discussion or change? Did everything that was promised the people ever come to pass?
Today we see change around us all the time. Some of those changes are
okay to individuals, but not everyone agrees with those changes. One case in point is the recent reduction in bridge tolls—we, as citizens love the reductions, but there are those politicians who do not like the change preferring the revenue to continue. We have, in our current life-times, seen changes occur almost daily. The family unit has changed to where some of our children have to fend for themselves and they get mixed up in un-lawful activities or activities that change their way of thinking—that human life does not matter.
We would like to think that as time progresses we would come to be loving and trusting of everyone around us. That would and should be our goal. But history has shown that the hatred, distrust, dis-like, and hostility of some towards many still exists and, in some cases, has in-creased. History is full of disagreements over small things, and wars ended up be-ing the “solution”. All the solution did was to kill many innocent people who were drawn into such conflicts by just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

whether it be in our jobs, our friendships or our family life. In order to be emotionally healthy we have to do
two things, one-set boundaries, and two, prioritize.
I think everyone in our church appreciates the tre-mendous dedication and quality of work which our Church Secretary, Kim, provides. She is the anchor of Community Church, sees that things run smoothly and knows more about our operations than anyone else. Kim frequently works beyond her normal work hours and
even, donates work hours from her home.
However, she is only one person. The many things that come at her in the course of a day amaze and con-fuse me. Recently, we installed a new phone system and moved her personal office across the Hall, while retaining the other room as our general church office with mailboxes, office equipment, supplies, Sunday School needs and other things that folks need access to. Both the phone and new office have made a great
difference for Kim in the performance of her duties.
However, sometimes, as things slip through the cracks in her or anyone’s work efforts, we forget the matter of grace and understanding. Things happen be-cause we are all human. In those cases, let us remem-ber to be grateful for the wonderful performance we tend to take for granted and offer grace for human mistakes. May we, also, remember, before jumping to conclusions, that some things happen which a staff member isn’t
even responsible for.
Kim handles her job with grace and skill. I would ask that we all offer that same grace to everyone, staff
and fellow church members, as well.
In addition, there is one boundary that I request folks follow for the benefit of our church, and our staff. Please, don’t take your complaints about the church or pastor to Kim. She is not the Church Liaison and should not have that burden placed upon her. Let her greet you
with love and help you with secretarial matters.
The place to go with discontent is directly to me, as Pastor, or to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. If you feel your concern or complaint does not warrant addressing in this appropriate manner, then it would seem unnecessary to raise at all. Under that circum-stance, may we remember the old adage: “If I don’t have something nice to say, then, perhaps, I shouldn’t
say anything.” However, if addressing your concern can be productive, then, by all means raise it in the proper
way.
Finally, some have wondered how my office hours are set; so I thought I would take another moment to share that information. As our District Superintendent has shared, each pastor has a different style, personality and method for the performance of ministry. God creat-ed us as unique individuals. While God has blessed me with many gifts, unfortunately, one of those was not the ability to multi-task, which is why I could never success-fully do our Kim’s job. I am a singularly focused person which means I have to concentrate fully on one thing at a time. My sermons, teaching plans and administrative work need to be prepared in the quiet of my home office where I spend many hours trying to give my best to an end product that will bless our whole church. Interrup-tions cause me to lose my train of thought. Therefore, the hours I set for the church office need to be times when I can plan on simply being available for drop-ins
and little else, which I try to set twice a week.
We, often, have several meetings, and night events at our church in which I am present until 9 or 10 pm. I try to set office hours to coincide with those nights, by com-ing in during afternoon hours. But, more importantly, I am available, as most will attest, to meet anyone who calls and seeks time with me. We will set aside whatev-er time works for you. So, please always keep this in
mind. I want to help whenever I can.
May we all remember that the church is not the gath-ering of saints or perfect people, but, the gathering of sinners seeking to become saints. We are fallible hu-man beings who will make mistakes – clergy, staff and congregation, alike. The gift of faith is that we know God loves us, warts and all; and by faith, we seek to improve on Jesus’ path each day, offering grace and understand-
ing to each other.
To the end that we may have a healthy faith and healthier church, let us, in the words of our founder John Wesley, move on to perfection in love. May God bless
us all as we seek to do our best for Him.
In Christian Love,
Kathy
W e have com-
pleted our
first year with Donna
Contarino as our Pre-
School Director. She
has brought such wonderful gifts of leadership
and creativity. A Summer Pre-School program
has been added for the first time and next
school year there will be added to the 3 and 4 year old classes, a third grouping for 2 year olds.
We are extremely grateful to all of our teachers,
aides and our Director for a harmonious and
successful 2014-15 school year.
As some of you know, lead teacher Suzanne
Brown will be leaving this summer, as she and
her family re-locate to Virginia. Suzanne has
been a blessing to us for many years and she
will be truly missed!
Also, we are excited to report that the Pre-
school has donated $14,000 to Community
Church as an end of the year gift. Ten thousand
dollars is designated by the School for the pur-pose of our Conference Appointment. We are
overwhelmed by this generosity and extend our
deepest gratitude.
Continuation from page 2, Faiths Pastor’s Corner…...
The most recent example of unrest is that of 21 year-old White male, Dylan Roof, who walked into a church, sat down at a Bible study, and after an hour passed, got up, and shot as many Black innocents as he could. “I have to do this”, he said. What or who drove him to do that? What in his life caused his ac-tions to be so hateful? Was it “friends”, or “family” who may have twisted his mind? What? How do we keep these things from happening?
We need to be more mindful of our youth, we need to not allow the use of “medicinal” drugs to be accepted as okay for recreational use, we need to get “gangs” out of our lives so that they can’t destroy our children or our country, we need to change their “day’s activities”, we need to be mindful of and interactive with our children. Most of all, we need to ask God to intervene so that all of humanity is not destroyed by humankind.
God is giving us enough time to “work” things out; but it is He Who is in control. Let us be those people who do their best to help advance God’s kingdom in this world—we can’t give up. We must help to bring about positive change.
May your day go as God planned it.
INVITE YOUR FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS
Be an ambassador for Christ. Welcome them into your
neighborhood, and tell them about our area and the lo-
cation of stores, schools and churches—let them know
you are willing to help them get familiar with their new
area. Invite them to attend church with you—all these
go together to make your new neighbors feel welcome.
THOUGHTS FOR JULY & AUGUST
“A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker
does not listen to rebuke.” Prov.13:1
And
“Do you realize that, in about 40 years, we’ll have thou-
sands of old ladies running around with tattoos?”
Membership Committee
At its June meeting, the Church Council voted to form a Membership Commit-tee whose purpose will be to survey our existing church rolls and to explore ways of better informing the mem-bership and wider communi-
ty of what our church has to offer. We will also seek creative ways of sponsoring church growth.
Anyone who feels called to serve God through this effort is asked to contact the church office at (410) 255-1506 or Council Chair Mike McGraw at (301) 943-9192. Volunteers are needed.
Education HappeningsEducation Happenings
Summer Sunday school is going
well. We are grateful to all who
volunteered to lead the class for 1
or 2 Sundays. It’s not too late to
sign up to teach. Lesson plans
will be provided for you, and you
need only sign up for the date or dates you choose.
Three year olds through 5th grade completed are
welcome to join us in room 4 after the Children’s
Message for stories, games and crafts. Please
check with Bobbie Richardson 410-599-4363 to
see how you can help.
Wow did we have fun at Camp Dis-
covery! We averaged 33 campers a
day with over half not regular church
attendees. VBS is a great outreach to
the community. We made faith
catchers , jeweled crosses,
and other great crafts
thanks to Miss Jean-
ette. We sang fun songs
about Jesus thanks to Miss
Cristina. Miss Ethelyn
taught us about David,
Deborah, Bartimaeus, Saul
and Shadrach, Meshach
and Abednego. We
knocked down Goliath and lions with bean bags,
and other fun activities, during games with Miss
Amber. We had delicious dinners thanks to Miss
Wendy and Mr. Bill. There are many more helpers
who we greatly appreciate. Please look in the bul-
letin and on the
bulletin board for
a list of all who
gave selflessly to
our VBS. We are
so blessed by
them! Our mis-
sion this year was to
fill the food pan-
try. We collected 90
items for the pan-
try. The 2nd/3rd grade
class collected the
most – 38 items! Be sure to go to the church’s
website www.communityumcpasadena.org to see
the video of all the activities we shared in at
camp. We thank each member for your support of
VBS!
Regular Sunday School will begin
September 13 with a special pro-
gram at 10:30 a.m. worship. Teach-
ers and helpers are needed. The
best way to learn the Bible is to teach Sunday
School. We use United Methodist curriculum and
have a lot of fun. Please consider being part of our
wonderful Sunday School. There will be Safe
Sanctuary training for those who have not had it
before Sunday School begins.
On Sunday, March 24, (Pentecost Sunday), eight of our youth were confirmed as full members of Com-
munity United Methodist Church, after 5 months of study and field trips. The Confirmands spent time
answering questions and sharing their knowledge with our congregation. They helped lead parts of the
worship service and were honored with “The Message” version of the Bible as a gift from the Worship
Committee and Congregation. Each Bible was embossed with the Confirmands name. In addition, our
students each received a personal gift from the Pastor. We are so proud of their accomplishments.

view that budget, including staff salaries.
2015 Apportionments
We are very much behind on
our Conference Appointments
which represent our contribu-
tion to the wider United Meth-
odist Church. Apportionments are a vital part of
the United Methodist Connectional Ministries
and help support such things as the Camping Pro-
gram, Deaf Ministries, Africa University where
African Youth receive a college education assisted
by United Methodists worldwide, and other Out-
reach and Administrative Church Ministries.
In order to come closer to our Appor-
tioned 2015 figure we will take up a special offer-
ing on Sunday, August 16th; Also our 3rd and 5th
Sunday Nickel Offering will go towards Appor-
tionments. Please help us meet our Connectional
Ministries Commitment. Thank you!
Our Worship Life
The summer brings a number of special worship
services for our enjoyment and inspiration. July 5,
is Independence Sunday and we will be sharing in
Patriotic hymns and the Pledge of Allegiance to
the flag.
On Thursday, June 25th we held an Orientation
Session for individuals seeking to join our fellow-
ship. We will receive several new members into
the life of the church on Sunday, July 12th. Our
next New Members Orientation session will be
held September 8th at 7:00 p.m. Those members
will be received into the church on Sunday Sep-
tember 20th.
July 19th is our 2nd Annual Children’s Sun-
day. We will explore “The Gospel According to
Disney” utilizing the story of “Beauty and the
Beast”. There will be a special Young People’s
Message of “Magic with Rev. Moore”. There will
be only one service at 10:30 a.m. and “NO Sunday
School”.
July 26, 2015 will be observed as “Holy Humor
Sunday”, as we consider the joy of our faith and
light –heartedness as a gift from God. Some of our
ladies will be a ‘Sister Act”. Rhonda Weeks has
prepared a humorous skit. There will be an oppor-
tunity for good, clean joke sharing, (so come pre-
pared). Rev. Moore’s sermon will deal with the
light-heartedness of the Gospel. Everyone is en-
couraged to come to worship in crazy outfits!
The next Healing Service will be held on
Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 7 p.m. We will
share in Communion, Prayer, Scripture, and Lay-
ing of Hands.
The 5th Sunday falls on August 30, 2015. As is
our tradition, there will be one combined service
at 10:30 a.m.
Finally, looking ahead: You are encouraged to
wear your daily work clothes or leisure clothing
for the observance of Labor Sunday on September
6, 2015.
ACTS COMMITTEE Report from Marcia Bond
While the Strawberry Festival and Vendor Fair
was not as big of a turn out that we had prayed
for, there were a tremendous amount of volun-
teers Friday night for strawberry capping, and set
up and again the day of the festival. Everyone
worked extremely hard and I would like to thank
all the volunteers for their time, energy, prayers
and support.
On the Tuesday night, following the Festival, the
ACTS Committee met for our normal scheduled
business meeting. We discussed some new fund
raising ideas, and ways that the congregation can
help.
Look for BAKE SALES during the year! All You
Can Eat Breakfast on the first Sunday of the
month starting in November. An Italian Night!
We are also ready to plan for 2016 and welcome
any new fresh ideas.
Our next big event – The Apple Harvest Festival
– will be held on October 3rd from 8:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Here is a list of what we need help with and how
you can assist:
1. Prayers – please if you can’t volunteer or come out to support because of your sched-ule please pray that our fund raiser is a suc-cess!
2. Baked good bakers, candy makers, pie prep-pers (our biggest seller), and jelly jammers. Need canning jars, bands and lids. Also someone who can decorate the tops once the jelly has set.
3. We are looking for an experienced Candy
Apple/Caramel Apple Maker and the equip-ment to do the apples. We would like to make some the night before the festival and then the day of the festival.
4. An assistant Flea Market Table Cashier. Also, we need nice donated items that we can sell for our table.
5. Small overalls, flannel shirts, straw cowboy hats, garden or shop gloves for use as scare-crow hands, solid colored pillow cases that can be cut in half for use as a scarecrow head. I need at least 4 Volunteers who will rotate to make the scarecrows on the back
yard. 6. Small PLASTIC or FAKE pumpkins or ap-
ples for decorating. 7. We need 4 -10 volunteers for the children’s
games. We are looking for some fun games
like Twister, Corn Hole/Bean Bag Toss, Pin the Stem on The Apple/Put the Hat on the Scarecrow. We’re trying to keep an Apple/
Fall theme for the Festival. Can anyone cre-ate a game for the church to use? That would be a blessing for us. Is anyone a part time clown or face painter in the congrega-tion? We sure could use you!
8. We are looking for 4 -8 Adult Volunteers to help out with the Obstacle Course and Moon Bounce Rides.
9. We were looking at doing Pony Rides – but I need committed Adults who can walk the ponies.
10. ENTERTAINERS - Square Dancers and/or Polka Dancers who are willing to perform a
dance or two or teach a lesson. We’d like some musicians, family friendly, who can perform a 15 -20 minutes (or longer) rou-tine.
11. Volunteers to set up the tents on the front lawn, Friday night before, and to take them down again after the festival. Table Set up and break down is, also, needed.
12. A greeter, a liaison for the church. Just to go around and say good morning to our guests. Maybe direct them to the restroom, condi-ments, explain Sunday School hours,
Church Services, Weddings, Baptisms, etc… You need not know all the answers as long as you know who you can guide them to. We, now, have brochures that can be hand-ed out.
13. We need a few Adult Volunteers for traffic control/parking.
14. Volunteers to run and collect money for the Bake Table, Candy Table, Pie Table, Candy Apple Table, Apple Sale Table, Drink Table.
15. Dish Washers, food preparers, and food servers. Cashiers for the food table.
Please send your prayers, your availability, a list
of items you can donate, where you can donate
your time, or any thoughts/ideas that would help
m a k e th e f e s t i v a l a s u c c e s s to

Women’s Ministries
The M&Ms will be meeting Thursday July 9 at
7:00 pm in room 3 to make more Prayer Blan-
kets. Everyone in the church is welcome to
join us. It is fun making the blankets and the
people who receive them are very apprecia-
tive of the love and prayers they feel when
they wrap the blanket around them. We
would greatly appreciate coupons to Joann’s
and other fabric stores to help us purchase
fabric. Cash donations for fabric are also wel-
come. We have given blankets to Mary Lou
Myers, Mark Weaver, Al Ramsey, Ethelyn
Wightman and Millie Lehner so far.
Blood Drive

CAMP HOPE News for July 2015
A s you read this article, we
will either be ready to leave
for Frostburg or already there. The
team this year, made from mem-
bers of CUMC and the Trinity
Club, consists of 12 youth, 4 young adults and 7
adults. In total, we are taking 11 new campers. A
small poster of all the campers is hanging on the
CAMP HOPE bulletin board in the hallway head-
ed towards the Fellowship Hall. Please pray for all
the campers to be guided by the Holy Spirit in
their service to our homeowners.
The Team would like to take this opportunity
to thank everyone WHO helped us this past year.
A special thank you to the Trinity Club and their
churches – Solley, Messiah and Marley UMCs.
Your embrace of our mission is truly a work of
Faith by the Holy Spirit. Without hesitation, you
have made this mission trip your own. And a
thank you to Community UMC, whose support
and Love we feel every year.
Since the team this year is made up of 4
churches, we decided to have an Ice Cream Social
on Sunday, July 26 at 5:00 pm in the Fellowship
Hall at Community UMC. This way, the team
members will have a chance to give a testimony of
their experiences at CAMP HOPE as a group. All
are invited.
Thank you again.
Gary and Marsha Thompson
Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you
are my disciples, if you have Love for one anoth-
er.” (John 13:35)
CAMP HOPE Caravan
Every year, the CAMP HOPE Teams take an after-
noon off and travel to Rocky Gap State Park. This year, we will be visiting the park on Thursday, July 9, roughly between 12:00 noon and 3:00pm. Joe and Andrea Barnes have graciously offered to bring a lunch for our team. If you would like to help with the lunch, or would like just to caravan up to Rocky Gap with them, please feel free to contact them by email at [email protected] or call them at 410-255-2713.
Community Bull and Oyster Dinner
Save the date! October 10, 2015 between 3-6 p.m. our first annual Bull and Oyster dinner will take place. This is an event you won’t want to miss! The dinner is “All U Can Eat” and will be served family style. The menu includes: Fried oysters, pit beef with all the fixin’s, green beans, corn, po-tato salad and drinks. Dessert will be by your choice – through a bake sale.
This is an opportunity to invite friends and family for an afternoon of good food, fellowship and fun.
And speaking of bake sale, we will be looking for people to bring your favorite baked goods to the oyster dinner.
Tickets will be available to purchase in advance or at the door. Be on the lookout for further infor-mation.
