First recorded in the Adelaide Botanic Garden in 1841 By 1891, it was described as the ‘most troublesome

weed’ in Brisbane

But it had spread over 1600km of the Eastern Australian coastline by th1 1950s

Impact

Some economic impacts are lantana infestations cost more than $104 million per year, land managers spend more than $17 million per year on lantana control and raises production costs in the commercial forestry.

Some biodiversity impacts are threatening more than 1400 native species and 100 ecosystems which includes 279 plants and 93 animals in the national threatened species legislation.

Some social impacts are increasing individual stress associated with economic loss, threatening culture heritage areas and reduced aesthetic appeal of nature areas.

Management

Accessing and prioritising assets and sites for controls This should ensure that management is directed to

sites with different assets, as opposed to managing a multiple number of sites that have the same assets

Maintaining areas that are presently free of lantana or removing isolated infestations

Other Facts Identifying of lantana types can be hard. You identify

the type of Lantana by the colour of their inner and outer flowers. They can be pink, white, pink-edged red, red and orange.
