Lance Edward Armstrong(born Lance EdwardGunderson; September 18, 1971) is an Americanformer professional road racing cyclist. Armstrong hadwon the Tour de France a record seven consecutivetimes between 1999 and 2005, before beingdisqualified from those races and banned from cyclingfor life for doping offenses by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in 2012. He is the founder ofthe Livestrong Foundation, originally called the LanceArmstrong Foundation, which provides support forcancer patients.

In October 1996, he was diagnosed with testicularcancer that had spread to his brain and lungs. Hiscancer treatments included brain and testicularsurgery and extensive chemotherapy. In February 1997,

he was declared cancer-free and the same year hefounded the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

On his first visit to a urologist in Austin, Texas, for hiscancer symptoms, he was coughing up blood and had

a large, painful testicular tumor. Immediate surgeryand chemotherapy saved his life. After his surgery, hisdoctor said that he had less than a 40% survivalchance.

My career stopped. The months of chemotherapy weregrueling. I thought Id never be able to get back on a racingbike. There were times I was so sick I couldnt eat, couldnt

watch TV, couldnt read my mail. But when I was sickest from the chemo, I started to beat

cancer. In the fall of 1997, I passed the one-year mark ofrecovery. Finally I made my mind up: I would try to raceagain.

It was a disaster. I managed to finish only fourteenth in thefirst professional race of my comeback. I was used to

leading, not finishing fourteenth. This is not how I want to spend my life, freezing and

soaked on a bike.

I was going to retire. When you have lived for so longterrified of dying, you feel like you deserve to spend the restof your days on vacation. I pretty much became a bum. I

golfed. I water-skied. I lay on the sofa and channel-surfed. One day Kik, my fiance, told me, You need to stop lying

around doing nothing. I love you no matter what. But thisisnt you. She was right. I could picture myself bumming

around for the rest of my life and I didnt like it. As the dayswore on, I began to waver on retirement.

We cycled over gravel and beds of pine needles, and underhanging boughs. The cold seared my lungs, and with everybreath I blew out white frost, but I didnt mind. This time itfelt good. We set out on a cold, rainy day planning to ride a100-mile loop before we undertook the big finishing ascentof Beech Mountain. We rode through a steady rain, and bythe time we got to the foot of the mountain, I was

drenched.

I lifted myself up out of the seat and propelled the bike upthe incline. I hammered down on the pedals, working hard,and felt a small bloom of sweat and satisfaction, a heatunder my skin. Chris was behind me in the follow car. Herolled down the window, yelling, Go, go, go!

The ascent triggered something in me. As I rode upward Ireflected on my lifemy childhood, my early races, my

illness and how it had changed me. My mother was 17when she had me, and she separated from my father when Iwas two. No one thought we would amount to anything,but Mom believed differently, and she raised me with an

unbending rule: Make every obstacle an opportunity.

In 1997, Armstrong founded the Lance ArmstrongFoundation, which supports people affected by cancer. Thefoundation raises awareness of cancer and has raised[124]more than $325 million from the sale of yellow Livestrongbracelets.

In 2007, Armstrong with other people founded Athletes forHope, a charity that helps professional athletes becomeinvolved in charitable causes and aims to inspire non-athletes to volunteer and support the community.

In August 2009, Armstrong headlined the inaugural charity

ride "Pelotonia" in Columbus, Ohio, riding over 100 mileson Saturday with the large group of cyclists. He addressedthe riders the Friday evening before the two-day ride andhelped the ride raise millions for cancer research.
