Goals
● Create more Green Space
● Have enough food to feed 10 million people
● Have a sustainable plan on how to deal with the food waste from ten million people
Problem/Challenges
● Finding a way to create food in a sustainable way so there is not a surplus of food that will just go to waste and minimizing the use of harmful pesticides.
● We have to create ways to incentivize people to compost and recycle.
Potential Design Option-Food● Vertical Farming
Build small farms inside industrial warehouses and within businesses using a special, patented rack technology. Its technology eliminates contamination, runoff and the need for pesticides, while reducing the amount of land needed to grow healthy produce. In Germany this is already being done. (This picture is an example of vertical farming in Tokyo)-------->
Potential Design Options - Waste
● Offer smaller trash cans and bigger recycling/composting bins
● Charge people for each pound of trash● Conduct curbside composting-compost
will be used as fertilizer.Composting cheaper than just dumping garage, extends life of landfills, reduces carbon emissions, can be reused and sold as fertilizer.
Potential Design Options - Green Space
● There will be regulations for all big businesses to incorporate green spaces on their roofs.
● Have parks designed to incorporate green space.
Potential Design Options-Community Gardens
Benefits:● community gardens provide access to nutritionally rich foods that may otherwise be
unavailable to low-income families and individuals.● Urban agriculture is 3-5 times more productive per acre than traditional large scale
farming.● community gardens add beauty to the community, filter rainwater, and help keep
lakes, rivers, and groundwater clean.● they restore oxygen to the air and help to reduce air pollution.● development and maintenance of garden space is less expensive than that of
parkland. ● community gardens provide a place to retreat from the noise and commotion of
urban environments.Example Model: Farm Shop→ create certain crops within in a designed area, community members help maintain the farm, and help distribute the food. It’s an actual business.
Green Roofs● Reduces runoff by
trapping rainwater● Provides space for
vegetationo Can be used to grow
food/herbso Can improve air
quality in urban areas currently affected by vehicle emissions
Partnerships
● energy- solar panels, LED lights within our green space
● Buildings- using rooftops as place to create green space. Vertical Farming and Big Box Farms.
● Water- green roofs help alleviate runoff.
● Waste- work with city to conduct curbside composting.
