Design Features Social gathering within the Fountain House parking lot indicates the desired function

of the space. The proposed plaza features a central fountain, which pays homage to

the site’s history and a large plaza with movable seating. Overhead, a bosque of Honey

Locusts provide shade throughout the summer months. Runoff from the plaza and street

is directed to the various stormwater planters throughout the site.

Sustainable Communities - Ambler Pa

Design Features The master plan refl ects the sustainable mission of the center. Working with the

existing landscape, invasive plants were removed and a native plant pallet was

established. Outdoor classroom space and native vegetation doubles as a setting

where staff can educate visitors of sustainability in a residential setting.

Design Features The Dixon roof garden provides visitors with a visual to the benefi ts of minimizing rooftop runoff. Both extensive and

intensive green roof systems were utilized to show the variety of vegetation that can be planted on rooftops. Two

plazas occupy the corners, which provides classroom space and accentuates views to the gardens below.

Analysis

Design IntentThe core of Villanova lacks a unifi ed central gathering space. Currently, the space is primarily used for circulation.

The surrounding buildings are isolated by strong edges and the lack of continuity. The redesign of the space unites

the surrounding buildings and provides space for social interaction, while maintaining the circulation requirements.

Design Features Removing the central staircase unifi es the frontage of Vasey Hall with the lower plaza. A grand staircase and an

elevator provide access to the upper plaza. The upper plaza features two rain gardens that collect runoff and an

elevated dining terrace off of Dougherty Hall. The master plan improves circulation and provides space for social

interaction.

Design IntentThe park is within a community of LEED certifi ed modern buildings and renovated historic structures. It is a sustainable

model that can be used to educate visitors about LEED, the benefi ts of rainwater management in an urban setting and

how reused materials can be used in appealing way. The park ties the Corporate Center to the Residential area to the

south.

Design Features

The Central green features a strong visual axis towards the historic

Receiving Station. Recycled and reclaimed materials from the Navy

Yard (pergola above and below) are used to strengthen the relationship

between the sites history and the new structures. The impervious

surfaces from the plaza drain into a stormwater planter to the south.

The park features a variety of spaces that will attract different user

groups from the different districts.
