EEB HUBThe Navy Yard, PhiladelphiaThe energy efficient building along with the public park will serve as a demonstration tool for energy efficient technology that is affordable, innovative, and near market ready. The site will provide a learning hub for the constructability of energy efficient components through holistic integration of parts. This will be achieved through a series of dynamic learning constructs that are perceptive to various learning curves. Using energy efficient retrofits in a didactic manner will facilitate accelerated market adoption by setting an example for innovative design. This will foster high performance outcomes leading a considerable return on investment, prompting the encouragement of the industry to use energy efficient practices, promote job growth, and set a new standard in the project planning process.

Master PlanThe programs found through the park were used to match 3 elements; a campus feel, educational, and sustainability. The master plan shows the breakup of the vegetation, spaces, and circulation.

Butterfly RoofThe roof features a sedum green roof that allows excess water to be centrally collected to be used in a gray water system and green wall located inside of the building.

Operable BlindsAutomatically controlled solar shading devices integrated into the air cavity control the amount of daylight allowed into the space, limiting glare, while double acting as absorption elements for the solar radiation.

Air CavityA cavity allows for an air gap that is naturally ventilated, with air entering the space from below, and exhausted at the top, ventilated both from and to the outside by buoyancy stack effects during the summer months and periods of solar irradiation.

Outdoor PlazaSix Saucer magnolias are located in the space providing a 4 season beautification of the space, while also providing small shading for the buildings southern facade during the summer.

IntegrationThe collaboration of IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) allowed the team to coordinate a successful design through the integration of the landscape and building. In order to maximize day lighting into the spaces, while balancing and controlling the solar heat loss/gain through the envelope, we collaborated in creating a two level double skin façade along the southern face of the classroom corridors. The dynamic features of the double skin façade allow for added control of the day lighting and heat gain into the spaces. Along with this geothermal wells are placed in the landscape to provide heating and cooling loads for the building, leading to a Platinum Energy level building.

Independent StudyInterior Day Scene3D modeling programs are proliferating and increasing in integration capabilities to other software products. 3ds Max is a program that generates models and renderings while being highly software compatible to other programs, such as Revit. The interior scene shows diffused indoor lighting with realistic material choices in order to communicate photo realism.

Toledo, OhioLake Erie during 1780’s used to have 7,800 square miles of wetland, as compared to now with only 700 square miles. The shipping channel in Toledo, Ohio has a growing problem with dredging. This dredge material has the opportunity to act as a revitalization tool for Lake Erie. The Harbor Lands project looks to solve this issue by using dredge material to build an Emergent Habitation Unit.

The creation of a series of wetlands, constructed through the natural hydraulic processes found in Lake Erie will produce a diverse set of wetlands that are categorized through a wave classification system. These margins of estuaries are periodically inundated by water level changes.

Educational ProgramThe interaction of people and the space is limited by a controlled path in order to allow for the least disturbance possible while providing key observational and educational programs. Visitors that enter the site are shown a snapshot of the form of an evolutionary landform that is a product of a dynamic equilibrium between key physical processes.

Wave Break System

Wave Classification SystemThese wetlands are produced and transformed by a wave classification system. The system is comprised of sheet pile set at certain height to allow water into the wetlands based on the wave’s height. Next comes the wave break on average lowers wave amplitudes by 50% resulting in a 75% wave energy decrease creating calmer waters, an ideal situation for wetlands to establish and thrive. The wave irrigation tubing floats allowing for adaptation to changing water levels.

Avian Species MatrixMigratory paths through the western Lake Erie region provide crucial resting and feeding areas for birds in the Mississippi flyway. Mixed emergent wetlands and open water wetlands provide the highest opportunity for migratory bird species due to the low human impact and the abundance of food. This matrix provides clear and simple information of the avian distribution within the wetlands.

Walt Walters CourtyardPennsylvania State University CampusThe Courtyard is used as a space of relaxation where students can contemplate. The ability to undercut mundane expectations by seeing a space in a new way is achieved through simplistic ideas, this helps to promote the opportunity of contemplation. This is achieved through the use of focused and controlled views as pedestrians move through the main walkway. The creation of physical models generates an interpretive perspective of space, fostering an enhanced understanding of the site.

International ParkToledo, OhioA scheduled 28 million dollar proposed pipeline for stormwater overflow is to be implemented through International Park in 2015. This catalyst sparked a redesign of the park. The design is focused on creating a unique series of undulating landforms within the surrounding flat topography of Toledo. This themed design would be immersed into existing structures through a purposed gradient style.

Immersed Commercial StructureA design dominated by landscape forms provides the opportunity to merge the built environment with the natural. One way to combine the landscape to the structural element is by morphing a building into an earth mound, resulting in a unique experience and providing an extensive green roof.

Spring Creek Canyon ParkState College, PennsylvaniaSpring Creek Canyon contains natural rarities that include mature native forests, endangered species, extensive biodiversity of flora and fauna, high quality cold water fisheries, and an invigorating canyon. Due to infringing agriculture these rarities are endangered, thus a call for a revitalization design has been issued. Through a study of suitability analysis, a series of programs and placement of an education center, trails, restoration/preservation of forests, and roads has been implemented.

ImplementationMixed Border PlantingThe design’s visual aesthetics of the space captures visitor’s eyes, while subtle smells of the perennial flowers engage the user. The diverse and creative plant pallet allows for a unique experience that serves multiple functions while creating a seamless interaction for individuals. Construction drawings provide the contractor with simple and clear instructions for the correct procedure of planting the vegetation.

ImplementationCenter for the EnvironmentThe Center for Environment is a purposed educational program that focuses on creating sustainable practices, specifically for stormwater management. In order for a design to manage stormwater on site in a successful manor, grading must be accurate to allow for smooth positive drainage, correct slopes, and achieve the lowest cost for cut & fill.

Residential DesignLong Island, New YorkThe client wanted to create a more vibrant backyard that would heighten seclusion and offer a more pleasing experience. The design featured a three system patio creating a public space, private space, and a secluded recessed pit. The vegetation around the pool allowed for screening of infrastructure and multiple elements to touch the water’s edge. Edge plantings create the seclusion the client desired, while also screening unfavorable views.

Castle On The HudsonTarrytown, New YorkThe hotel required expansion and renovation to their existing site, the multi-disciplinary firm Peter Gisolfi & Associates won the bid in their design. The rendered master plan provided a visual aid for the clients to see the integration of exterior spaces in relation to the building structure and its new expansions.
