Beltrami UK Ltd is a major UK natural stone wholesaler of granite, basalt, slate, marble and limestone tiles, paving slabs, wall coverings and slabs for fabricating imported from quarries all over the world. With it’s tile stock warehoused in Harelbeke, Belgium and it’s slab stocks held in it’s UK warehouse in Halesowen, West Midlands, Beltrami makes weekly deliveries with it’s own fleet of trucks direct to customers.

On the forefront of innovation and sustainability, Beltrami is a member of the ETI and aims to purchase only from quarries committed to sustainable and ethical working practices.

Supplying stone and useful information to professionals in the landscaping and building industry, a full external range of stone is available along with an extensive internal flooring and wall cladding range.

There are a wide variety of sizes and looks available, from contemporary looking basalts – TWILIGHT in particular, to more traditional looking limestones such as SIMYRA – the only 2cm thick beige frost-proof limestone which is suitable for the UK climate. Available in a brushed finish with straight edges or an antico finish with tumbled edges, this limestone is perfectly suited for inside and outside use making it the ultimate kitchen to garden patio/terrace stone. Another useful stone is TANDUR GREY – a light grey limestone available in various finishes for external use – great for the current trend for greys.

Many of the stones in the range have versatile swimming pool copings available which can also be used as wall coping stones or steps – 2 designs available, a bullnosed edge or a straight honed edge.

Also expanded this year is the Stoneskin range, 9 stones are now available in this rugged 3-D wall-cladding system including Everest Green, Black Quartz and NEW Pepperino Dark all of which will be available to view on our stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park, London this September.

The importance of hedging and screening can be overlooked – that is until you suddenly find yourself in need of privacy or protection. Instant Hedges receive many phone calls each day from people who are desperate for a solution to block out external influences from their private space but are unsure of how to achieve it. The reason behind their request can vary hugely from problematic neighbours to noise pollution from roads to visual eyesores. Regardless of the reason Instant Hedges are passionate about finding the correct solution for their specific situation. They are proud to be able to offer a range of hedging and screening from 60cm to 600cm tall. Over the years they have identified some key trends in screening and have responded to these by increasing their range. The popularity of pleached trees over the past few years has skyrocketed. Pleached trees have the advantage of sitting neatly over a fence panel and extending the screening by almost the same height as the fence. In the past conifers may have been used to gain the height required but as land becomes more precious, economically and aesthetically, pleached trees have really found their niche. The structure of the pleached tree means minimal space is used in the garden and screening is given exactly where you need it.

Instant Hedges business and reputation has grown over the years but their commitment to offering complete end to end service from consultancy through sourcing, supply and distribution to planting and maintenance has remained. Managing Director Nick Angel concludes: “Our reputation has been built on the expertise of our personnel, our appreciation of customer expectation, the quality and service and the value-for-money we are able to deliver on each and every project.” www.instanthedges.co.uk

Consider an array of “Spiral Trunk” olive trees for impact. Or one or two ancient olive trees as conversation pieces. Come and see samples on their stand at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September. www.villaggioverde.co.uk

Villaggio Verde has been established for over 15 years, and is now one of the leading growers and suppliers of Olive Trees to the trade. This award-winning company (latest award - RHS, Gold Medal Winners 2013) specialises only in olive trees, and holds many thousands of olive trees in stock - this means Villaggio can offer the best deals on olive trees, with extremely competitive rates and professional next-day delivery options. Whether you are looking for an ancient gnarly olive tree, centuries old, with a trunk and crown of a specific dimension… or a whole grove of smooth-trunked olive trees, in varying ages, Villaggio Verde can take your brief, and fulfil your order - usually directly from stock. You can even select your olive trees and get a video of each tree before you buy. Either select your tree on the website, call or email Villaggio and one of the team will identify your ideal tree(s) and make a 360degree video for you.

Given enough space and light, olive trees can thrive indoors and are a graceful addition to many shopping malls and offices. Olive tree roots are not aggressive and easily-contained, so they suit limited planting spaces that may harm other trees.

Perhaps eventually we’ll stop creating sterile play spaces and focus instead on ‘playable landscapes,’ where contact with natural elements and materials adds play value and makes the play space more exciting and interesting to use too… watch this space! Come and listen to Play England and Aileen Shackell from ASA Landscapes tell you more about how to create successful play spaces at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. www.asa-landscape.com

In 2008 Play England and the DCMS together published Design for Play: a guide to creating successful play spaces, and a revised edition will be published later this year. Whereas ‘messy’ or un-tidy play spaces are taken for granted in places like Germany, in the UK we still seem to expect our play spaces to look like sterile versions of ‘indoors’. But Design for play has helped many people to be more creative, and as a result play spaces are increasingly often landscapes with carefully-integrated play equipment, rather than just the traditional ‘Kit, Fence, Carpet’ model (as coined by Helen Woolley of Sheffield University) which focuses on a lot of equipment, set in an impact absorbent surface, and usually surrounded by fencing. Our children deserve much better than this and we’re pleased to see that clients across the country are continuing to experiment with play design. Tree swings are making a come-back to our open spaces; sand and water are becoming more common, and even planting is often included too.

Hampton decking is designed to be easy to install with a very simple yet affective clip system, giving a pre-determined gap of 5mm between the planks. The clip allows the planks to move with the co- expansion and contraction from heat, which is crucial with any plastic decking product, reducing the fixings from breakage. Imagine the potential in the domestic market for this product! Vist them at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. www.masterjoint.co.uk

Masterjoint, a sister company of the The Mayfield Group, launched a brand new decking product earlier this year, designed specifically for domestic homes. With over 20 years’ experience in the design, manufacture and installation of plastics, the all new Hampton decking includes the very best of all the ideas and experience and is by far the best product we have ever produced. No products are recession proof but having a new product that ticks all the boxes and is very competitively priced is the absolute perfect recipe to ensure this product will be a market leader. The Hampton decking is made from some incredibly clever technology, incorporating some very modern materials such as ASA and Carbon, offering far better long term weathering benefits than all the other plastics they have used or produced before. So confident are they with these materials that they are offering a lifetime warranty with our entire range of Hampton decking! Even with all this new and incredible technology they have ensured that the core of our product is being made from recycled uPVC, which accounts for 85% of the decking, ensuring they maintain their pledge to be environmentally conscious.

Walk onto a Grono artificial grass lawn and you’ll feel the difference. First of all it looks just like grass, plus it’s both practical and beautiful at the same time - but even better than that, you’ll never have to do any of the hard work normally associated with having a lovely lawn.

Materials and technology have improved their artificial grass so it now creates a lawn that looks and feels like natural grass and will last up to 20 years!

Fake grass is much more cost-effective than paving or other artificial coverings - and when you measure the investment over the life of the grass it can even work out cheaper than laying and maintaining natural turf.

Imagine a beautiful lawn that requires virtually no maintenance at all and stays green and lush as the day it was laid. Fake grass is great for kids, pets, parties and it’s very hard wearing, it can even handle the rough and tumble of sports and play areas.

No mowing, no muddy/bald patches, no weeds, hard wearing (lasts up to 20 years), fade resistant, flame retardant, green all year round, no maintenance, great for hay fever sufferers Come and see Grono at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park on stand CP13.

The Ardosia Slate Company Limited has over 20 years’ experience in the manufacture of slate products for both interior and exterior use. Only the finest quality raw materials are used in production, with stock items manufactured in the country of origin (mainly Brazil) and bespoke items at their facility in North Devon.

Their range of slate slabs for use in hard landscaping projects is generally available in either ‘graphite’ (black) or ‘blue/grey’ (some people identify it as ‘greenish’). The slabs are ‘hand split’ and have a riven texture, they can be supplied in thicknesses from 10mm to 40mm (50mm to special order) and large quantities are held in stock ranging in size up to 2.2metres by 1.3 metres. Cut to size and edged these slabs make particularly attractive steps and cills and we also stock ‘rustic’ monliths up to 2metres high.

Their garden furniture range is almost inexhaustible and includes slate planters (stock sizes and made to measure), slate tables can be circular, hexagonal, rectangular, square (dining or coffee height), whilst slate benches are available in a variety of lengths (with or without backrest). Slate stools are designed and produced to complement the tables and benches. Barbecue and food preparation surfaces can be manufactured to order, or simply use a standard size slate slab.

Hannah Griffiths is a mosaic artist and painter; she makes bespoke mosaics for public and private clients. Trained as a fine art painter, most of her work is initially developed through painting and then she loves the process of transposing these designs into mosaics, which is a beautiful and tactile medium. Working with a variety of materials including glass and ceramic tesserae, gilded glass and broken china she has undertaken diverse commissions including wall art for colleges and hospitals. Numerous domestic commissions for floors, kitchens, tables, mirrors etc. have been inspired by diverse subject matter including African textiles, Moroccan pattern, Italian church floors, the crown jewels and red hot chilli peppers.

In 2012 Hannah created an exquisite egg ‘Conchiglia’ for The Faberge Big Egg Hunt London. In 2011 she made a beautiful crocodile, ‘Flora’, for Jungle City Edinburgh, and in 2010 she made ‘Figgy’ for Elephant Parade London.

In 2009 Hannah was honoured to be awarded a scholarship by QEST to attend the Master in Mosaic course at Orsoni in Venice. The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust was set up in 1990 by the Royal Warrant Holders Association to award scholarships to talented craftsmen and women. At Orsoni she learnt how to work with smalti mosaics, which are made from beautiful handmade enamelled glass and cut with a traditional hammer and hardie, in the oldest and most respected mosaic establishment.

Examples of Hannah’s work can be seen on the QEST stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Fernando Gonzalez Garden Design is an award-winning practice with a reputation for making gardens that are artworks in themselves, whilst pushing the boundaries of conventional design by employing state-of-the-art technologies and manufacturing processes. In 2013, FGGD was named one of the 50 Most Innovative Practices across the Globe by Digital Landscape Architecture Now. At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013 Fernando Gonzalez was awarded a Silver-Gilt medal for the garden called ‘ The Sound of Silence ‘.

Fernando describes the garden, saying “It is a different and contemporary view of the traditional Zen garden , an abstracted small landscape that captures the essence of nature by contrasting opposing elements – the silence of the mountains made from Hi-Macs natural acrylic stone, the elegance and serenity of the bonsai and the sea made of gravel all contribute to the sense of calm and aesthetic pleasure. These elements provide clues in search for the garden’s deeper significance.

Fernando is one of the featured speakers at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) was formed to try and raise and maintain standards in the industry and to help consumers make an informed choice in a market place that is susceptible to problems. Formed in 1995, the APL, which operates as a Specialist Group of the Horticultural Trades Association, represents landscapers who have met a required standard of professionalism. Members of the Association are registered with the government endorsed TrustMark Scheme and are annually inspected and agree to follow a customer charter with clients. All APL members also hold the appropriate insurance and have traded for a minimum of two years. The APL provides homeowners with an even greater choice when selecting a landscaper. As a customer, you can feel confident that the APL landscaper you have chosen has met prescribed professional standards. The APL have a close partnership with the RHS and are responsible for the ‘Low Cost, High Impact’ gardens at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The category was introduced to the show for the first time last year providing APL members with an exclusive opportunity to showcase their work. The gardens showcase a practical approach which also provides a wow factor. The aim is that visitors will be able to recreate the garden design, based on a fixed budget for hard landscaping, plant material and labour. This ‘Low Cost, High Impact’ concept has been so successful, it has also been rolled out to RHS Flower Show Tatton Park. The APL also host regular cluster group meetings around the country. These meetings offer members networking opportunities and sharing of ideas and best practice in the industry through the course of the year. The Association of Professional Landscapers also have designated website with an easy-to-use map of the UK to help you find a contractor near you. The APL is looking forward to being at LANDSCAPE again this year, which provides a great environment and opportunity to discuss with potential new members and consumers about the benefits of membership and of using an APL registered contractor. Why not come along and say hello.

ASLAAmerican Society of Landscape ArchitectsFounded in 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) represents more than 15,000 landscape architecture professionals and students in the United States, its territories, and 42 other countries around the world. ASLA promotes the landscape architecture profession and advances the practice through advocacy, education, communication, and fellowship.

Nearly 80 percent of ASLA members work in private practice; 12 percent work in the public sector; five percent are full-time educators; and the remaining members are employed by developers, corporations, and institutions. ASLA members work on projects of every type, scale, and budget. Residential, urban design, and parks/recreation are the largest markets, but planning, hospitality, campus design, and healthcare represent significant practice sectors as well.

The ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO is the largest gathering of landscape architecture professionals and students in the world. More than 6,000 attendees and nearly 500 exhibitors are expected to participate in the 2013 Annual Meeting and EXPO in Boston, Massachusetts, November 15-18, and the Society welcomes participation by UK professionals and exhibitors. One of the most frequent requests ASLA receives from meeting attendees is for more exhibitors from the UK and Europe. Attendees want access to products that are well-designed and feature the highest quality craftsmanship. The Outdoor Stylist was founded by Anne Robert, it is a marketing consultancy dedicated to helping brands decode and navigate the global outdoor market.

As part of their activities, they track trends and analyze designs arriving on the market. On their web site you will find a selection of designs available most often in both Europe & the US., although when not available in both regions, they hope that they inspire and give a feel for things to come.

There are so many designs and so many options available with collections, as often as possible we provide links to e-catalogs so you get the most complete view of what is available without drowning you in an information overload. Where possible they link to videos and provide price pointers too.

Their goal is that you leave the site having a frame of reference of what is ‘out there’ and enough data about a design so you know if you want to invest time in researching it further.

Anne Robert is a featured speaker at LANDSCAPE this September, come along and listen to her seminar.

Q Lawns are looking forward to exhibiting at the LANDSCAPE show this autumn and will be showing some old favourites and one exciting new product that will have the designers drooling.

This year, the Norfolk based grower celebrates 20 years of supplying quality turfgrass to the nation. Over the years, Q Lawns turf has been used in such prestigious locations as the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, Legoland Windsor and the Olympic Park. Sales and Marketing Manager Chris Carr says “We’re proud to have reached this landmark anniversary and see it as proof that landscapers and gardeners like our turf and they like our service – they must do – because they keep coming back for more!”

Another popular product grown on the Q Lawns’ farm is Enviromat sedum matting which is great for low maintenance ground cover, but what it’s most often used for is creating living green roofs on garden buildings. Living roofs are more or less mainstream these days and because Enviromat is lightweight, easy and competitively priced it just keeps on increasing in popularity.

Page 39: Landscape Show News August 2013

Q Lawns are constantly looking at ways of making Enviromat even more convenient to use, including, touring the Country giving talks to landscapers and garden designers on how and why to incorporate green roofing.

“Biodiversity, using native plants and cutting maintenance costs are all hot topics at the moment” says Angela Lambert from Q Lawns. Meadowmat their wild flower matting meets all three of these criteria and it’s so much easier than seeding or plug planting. Angela said “We’re doing a little bit of product development at the moment and hope to have something exciting to show off at the LANDSCAPE show later on this year”. www.qlawns.co.uk

Ivan Black was born in London in 1972, he works predominantly in the medium of kinetic sculpture. His interest in sculpture began at an early age and motion quickly became central to his work; adding as he saw it another dimension of complexity and interest to his experiments. An inherent problem solver, he spent his early years amassing multi disciplinary skills in the pursuit of the means to realise his ambitious ideas.

Ivan uses his unique methodology to create kinetic works that mutate upon the introduction of energy. The repetition of identical elements is a recurrent theme in his work, by this means he builds complex fluid structures. Each work is a section of a potentially continuous sequence, generated in form by the application of systematic rules to the geometry.

Ivan takes inspiration for his designs from iconic natural forms, combining mathematical concepts and the pioneering spirit of the British engineer to create a synergy between science, art and technology.

Ivan Black

His meticulously engineered and seamlessly integrated mechanisms are central to the behaviour and appeal of his work. Tending towards the minimalist in design, the movement is allowed to take centre stage.

His work has been widely exhibited including at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice and The Cass Foundation Sculpture Park, Interart Sculpture Park in the Netherlands, Palmyra Sculpture Centre Mallorca and the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden. He is a regular exhibitor at the Kinetica Art Fair and his work is included in many significant private collections.

Ivan Black will be presenting a new range of hanging and free standing wind powered kinetic sculptures at this year’s LANDSCAPE show. The works rotate gently in the wind creating striking and mesmerizing centrepieces for gardens and outdoor spaces.

When it comes to needing soil, you don’t get more demanding than the needs of the critically endangered Sumatran tiger. With only an estimated 400 left in the wild, the Tiger habitat at the ZSL London Zoo had to pull out all the stops to make their new enclosure suitable for our furry friends.

Using Tru-Grow soil from MCM, the ZSL expert horticulturalists could carefully mimic the tropical foliage of the island of Sumatra.

Tru grow was perfect for this as it is sand based and when mixed with PAS 100 compost it made it lightweight and easy to use. With the rigorous testing done, everyone is now happy that the tigers, Jae Jae and his mate Melati, will have a lovely new home to settle into.

Other prestigious projects that we have used Tru Grow include the Olympic park redevelopment at Stratford and a famous film studio in Watford.

If you have any questions or would like to come have a look at this amazing soil then visit MCM at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

GLDAThe GLDA is Ireland’s only association of professional garden designers, horticulturists and landscape architects. Individual members provide garden and landscape design services throughout Ireland. Every Full Member is rigorously assessed by an external panel of professionals, made up of experts from the design, horticultural and academic sides of the profession.

Objectives:• To set standards for garden and landscape design.• To raise public awareness of garden and landscape designers and the services they have to offer.• To liaise with relevant organisations in order to provide comprehensive education and ongoing training for members.• To facilitate the exchange of information between members, suppliers and the public. What The GLDA DoesThe faith of those early members was not misplaced. Within a few short years the GLDA has grown to become a dynamic force for good, which is now at the fore-front of the revolution in Irish gardening. Through its ongoing training opportuni-ties in drawing and surveying, its practical workshops and field trips, its intelligence gathering network, and most publicly, its highly acclaimed annual international de-sign seminar, the GLDA disseminates new information on methods, techniques and current best practice in landscape de-sign and horticulture, and has created a new demand for improved quality and in-creased availability of a much wider and more interesting selection of plants.

Nidagravel is a gravel stabiliser product that has considerable benefits when used in conjunction with a traditional loose gravel finish. Thanks to nidagravel walking, cycling and wheeling a bicycle, wheelchair, pushchair or pram across gravel are no longer a problem. The gravel is laid in honeycombs which keep it in place and prevent it moving or migrating. Ugly ruts, puddles and potholes are a thing of the past.

nidagravel sheets are made from extruded polypropylene and have a hollow, hexagonal structure (honeycomb structure). These sheets are light in weight and pressure resistant and are intended to reinforce and stabilise areas covered with gravel and pebbles. They are highly resistant to aggressive products, micro-organisms and rodents and are also recyclable.

Deep Root Partners is a leading urban landscape products and ecosystem services supplier whose mission is to integrate green utilities such as trees, soil and storm-water in to the built environment.

The Silva Cell is a specialized tool to meet sustainability goals and improve the ecological function of urban sites through the integration of large tree growth and on-site storm-water management.

The modular Silva Cells stack to create customized void spaces beneath paving (footpaths , plazas, etc.) that is then filled with soil. This soil provides unlimited rooting space for trees, enabling them to grow large and improving canopy cover without disrupting surrounding utilities. The same soil volume simultaneously acts as on-site storm-water management, significantly reducing non-point source pollution and controlling the rate, volume, and quality of water runoff.

By integrating trees, soil, and storm- water, the Silva Cell improves sustainable site design. It is ideal for use in cities and towns and meets engineering and loading standards with no loss of structural hard landscape integrity. Landscape Institute of HorticultureThe Institute of Horticulture (IoH) is delighted to announce that Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to grant a Royal Charter to the Institute of Horticulture. The Institute’s Royal Charter will come into legal effect when it is sealed by the Crown Office at the House of Lords. It is expected that this will be completed in the New Year 2014. The granting of a Royal Charter has been an aspiration of the Institute since its inception in 1984 in view of the major benefits it will bring to the Institute and its members. A Royal Charter will enhance the Institute’s ability to present our profession through increasing the profile, recognition and standing of professional horticulture. As a Chartered body the Institute’s ability to raise standards will be strengthened and the Institute will be better placed to represent and support horticulture as a profession and assist members in the practice of the profession. On becoming a Chartered Institute in 2014 all members will retain their existing membership level but will also have the benefits associated with membership of a Chartered body. However, the Royal Charter equips the Institute with the new ability to award individual Chartered status to members of the Institute. This new prospect would be optional for members to apply for should they choose. Individual Chartered status will recognise the achievement of a senior practitioner level and this will support members by confirming their high level of professional expertise. This has the major potential to help individuals in all aspects of the Industry. The Institute of horticulture are proud supporters of LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September and look forward to meeting members there. www.horticulture.org.uk

Judith’s pots create dramatic forms for the contemporary house and garden, drawing on traditions as diverse as Minoan Crete and Art Deco, and inspired by the dramatic qualities of light and shadow in the Mediterranean and North Africa. Judith uses a range of techniques; including throwing and coiling to produce unique handmade pieces with bold geometric designs and strong simple shapes. The resulting work is dynamic and striking.

“I enjoy the interplay of strong clear lines and edges and each pot that I make feels like an exploration of this.”

She also makes lizards and geckos, many combined with pots, which have unusual vibrancy and a lifelike quality, they bring an element of the unexpected, the unpredictable to the garden. Judith was a student on the Harrow Studio Pottery course from 1983 until 1985. She now lives and works in Bristol in a purpose built studio in her garden. She is a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Over many years of making pottery and ceramics her ideas have shifted in focus and emphasis but the core influences are unchanged: open spaces, straightforward shapes, a simple ceramic palette crisp lines and bold patterns.

Bonar introduces Duracover: the first completely biobased ground cover. Ground covers – also known as weed control fabric – have been common for years among those who work in the areas of landscaping, gardening, etc. The principle of the ground covers is simple: by minimising the light transmission, the germination and growth of weeds is also prevented. Woven ground covers also allow water to pass through, however, so the rain can get into the ground without problems.

Originally, these ground covers were made primarily out of polypropylene. For several years, though, the awareness has been growing that an alternative was needed. Plastics should be avoided in nature, where possible. Here and there, biodegradable alternatives did arise. In terms of ease of use, quality and effectiveness, however, those alternatives did not even get close to the traditional ground covers.

Researchers from the Bonar Research Center made a breakthrough with the invention of Duracover. Duracover is completely biobased, which is why it ea rned the highest 4-star certificate from AIB Vinçotte. The researchers also succeeded in developing a ground cover with the same quality as the traditional BONAR ground covers: very user-friendly, almost completely opaque, well permeable, UV-resistant and very strong.

Bonar will be showing this innovative product at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

His work to date has included commemorative gifts, public art projects, memorials, signage and artwork for exhibition.

Seeking to achieve the highest levels of craftsmanship, he is dedicated to creating beautiful inscriptions and low-relief carving. At LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September, QEST scholars will be demonstrating their skills and talents and look forward to being part of things in a big way.

We are grateful to LANDSCAPE for their generous support and foresight and look forward to a great show this September.

UK based garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin has been commissioned to design a show garden for the inaugural Australian Garden Show, Sydney in September 2013. The garden is created in collaboration with Tom Harfleet who Fisher Tomlin worked with to create a Gold Medal winning garden in New Zealand earlier this year.

Andrew said “This is an amazing opportunity for us to showpiece UK design down under and is a natural extension of the success we have had taking our design ideas overseas. We were attracted by the new show because it aims to offer more than the traditional garden show with cutting edge design and horticulture but also an incredible night time experience not seen anywhere before.”

The inspiration for the showpiece garden, called September Sky, comes from those spring skies when days become longer and the light becomes clearer, where colours are sharp, crisp and silver. The garden uses typical Australian natives from a perspective of the outsider to the country, a fresh eye in a contemporary setting where strong architectural forms engage with a much wilder planting.

Andrew added “Light, fire and sound will be brought in to transform the landscape at night-time. It’s the first time we’ve had a cocktail lounge right next to our show garden so we’re going to create something special for all those night time visitors.”

The inaugural Australia Garden Show Sydney will open 5-8th September in the city’s Centennial Park. The show is developed by Destination New South Wales on behalf of the New South Wales Government and will be the launch platform for the stunning series of floral and garden events taking place throughout the region from spring onwards.

Andrew Fisher Tomlin is one of the many international speakers at this years LANDSCAPE event in Battersea Park this September. Register for free tickets and come along and listen to him.

Juliet SargeantTaming the rural landscape to create a pleasing garden to suit your lifestyle can be a challenge.

There is an abundance of beauty to be found in the countryside, but Nature will inevitably throw up difficulties, such as water-logged heavy clay, windswept hillsides and fields that flood.

Juliet Sargeant thrives on a challenge and has many years of experience in moulding the landscape and selecting the right plants in order to create beautiful gardens that sit well in their surroundings.

Last year Juliet was awarded the 2012 inaugural prize for a sustainable garden by the Society of Garden Designers. Her own garden is a windswept coastal site.

So, if you are wondering how to co-exist happily with the rabbits and deer that graze your garden, please contact Juliet for a consultation or visit her website:www.julietdesigns.co.uk

Schellevis slabs have a very distinct character and can easily be recognised as they have a surface with an irregular pattern of little bubbles. Each and every slab has a different pattern, no two are the same. Unlike most other concrete products Schellevis slabs hold their characteristic appearance over the years. They do change, but in a natural way. Five different colours are available to suit your taste and they can be used in both modern and classic settings; they seem to adapt themselves to the scenery.

This is why many architects and landscapers on the continent appreciate the beauty of the Schellevis slabs and Schellevis look forward to showing you their range of beautiful products at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Boot & Co. Nurseries will also be part of the Dutch Pavilion. Founded 60 years ago, they specialise in the production and supply of top quality hardy nursery stock, for use in landscape projects and by Local Government. Their extensive product range includes - trees, specimens, shrubs, hedging, perennials, conifers, rhododendrons, fruit and bulbs.

Considerable resources are put into breeding new plant varieties and developing new production methods; to minimise our impact on the environment and reduce maintenance to a minimum. Noteable examples of this are their award winning ‘Fleur Robuste’ Landscape Roses, hybridized, selected and trailed by or R&D department, to provide a long period of colour, disease resistance and minimal maintenance; their ‘Fleur Robuste’ range of Perennials, selected varieties providing a long period of colour, disease resistance, minimal maintenance and insect nectar. Includes some familiar varieties and some less well known subjects.

Production of shrubs in biodegradable pots, made from rice husks and other waste products. We produce several hundreds of thousands of these a year. These save on depotting costs and disposal of plastic waste.

Come and talk to Boot at this years LANDSCAPE Show at Battersea Park, this September.

Schellevis Beton was founded in 1937 in the Netherlands and will be featured as part of the Dutch Pavilion stand at LANDSCAPE this September. Schellevis is producer of a wide range of concrete materials, among wich the paving slabs and stones are the most important. 25 dedicated employees daily work to make top quality paving materials in the factory in Dussen.

This year, the LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park, will feature an Italian Pavilion. Flora Nord is just one of those companies taking part who represent a cooperative of ten companies from Northern Italy.

The companies within Flora Nord are all production nurseries and have recently made the decision to export directly.

The plants from this area are more cold resistant due to the harsh winters in Northern Italy and therefore more suitable for the UK.

The range offered by the cooperative include rare species of plants like Firmiana, Halesia, Nyssa, Syncopsis and Stewartia and above all you can find real specimen plants that are truly hard to find!

Flora Nord can organise the logistics so there is no minimum order per grower, and partial loads are possible. Do come along and speak to them at LANDSCAPE this September to see what is possible.

At LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September will be a pavilion of exhibitors from France. One such exhibitor is Catriona McLean who represents many of the France’s best known potteries manufacturing classic handmade terracotta vases, oil jars, pots and sculptural pieces not to mention other decorative terracotta garden ornaments. For the LANDSCAPE Show Catriona has selected five of her best makers, with whom she has been collaborating not only on export sales but also on design and trends for more than 15 years. One of them, Ampholia, are based in Anduze. They are a small artisan atelier who make all their vases by hand, by using moulds and hand finishing with a particular and very distinctive antica glaze. Poterie Le Chene Vert is also based in Anduze and make a classic range of ornate glazed Anduze vases of all sizes. Hand thrown, or using moulds they are also now making very large contempory style vases using the” rope method”. Poterie Terre d’Albine is a family run pottery that makes fire bricks and roofing tiles – classic Provencal style using their own terracotta clay from earthworks on their land near Toulouse. Atelier Ficat is a small artisan atelier near Toulouse. Trained in church sculptural renovation this stone mason has now developed his own range of exterior or interior sculptured pieces. Claude Destand started in St Jean de Fos in the Hérault, as a wine grower, like his father before him. He turned to also making traditional pottery from the region carefully and meticulously recreating the pottery designs made by the towns’ 17th century potteries. Emerging Talent In Garden Design

The Inchbald School of Design pioneered garden design training in the UK, providing courses that focused on garden design for the domestic environment. This remains their speciality, but they have expanded and refined their garden design courses to accommodate the increased demand for professionalism.

The garden design school maintains strong connections with the garden design profession enabling them to place students with established designers. They continue to pride themselves on the success of their students in the marketplace. Front-runners in the world of garden design include Inchbald garden design graduates.

The comprehensive one-year course for the Diploma in Garden Designprepares students to enter the garden design profession. Through a series of practical design projects, underpinned by an understanding of garden design principles and concepts, students develop skills in garden design, design analysis, planting design, hard landscaping and construction, drawing and presentation.

At The London College of Garden Design the aim is to provide world-class, inspirational garden design training. Their garden design courses and the Garden Design Diploma have been created to enable students to learn from the very best in the profession every day. All their tutors have the most up to date knowledge and information to support you in your chosen career whether it is the one-year Garden Design Diploma or their programme of short courses and readers’ days.

The London College of Garden Design one-year Garden Design Diploma classes take place in the Orangery conference facilities at the world famous Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and our ongoing programme of short courses is delivered from other venues across London, chosen for their relevance and easy access for those coming from outside the capital. We continue to offer courses at Regent’s College in the Regent’s Park as well as other venues such as the Royal College of Physicians.

Please do visit them to find out more about the courses they run and the qualifications that are available.

The natural environment, the coastal shoreline and the beauty of the Weald countryside in Kent where she lives inspire Lynda Hukins’ work.

British wildlife is her dominant theme although in recent years she has created abstract sculptures. Many of her wildlife bronzes hint at abstraction in their simplicity of form, giving them a contemporary character. Lynda is drawn to the strength and movement she finds in her subjects and uses a strong definition of line to draw the eye to the sculpture, and express these essential qualities.

Samples of Linda’s work will be available for viewing at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

Come visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park. www.tamata.co.uk

At Tamata, they specialise in growing Acer palmatum (Japanese maples) to a mature specification in nurseries in New Zealand where plentiful sunlight, high rainfall, and fertile soil combine to produce a strain of Acer palmatum uniformly of superior quality and strength.

As mature specimens, Tamata trees are ideal for planting (in pots or in the ground) within up-market design projects where the desired effect is an instant “established” garden. Additionally, the taller upright varieties are well-matched for commercial applications such as parks and street plantings.

Their product range is extensive, offering some unique cultivars as well as better known varieties grown to a specification rarely previously available in the UK; giving an opportunity to add a touch of uniqueness and individuality to projects.

Their trees are subject to the regulatory requirements of UK government agencies such as DEFRA and FERA to monitor, inspect, test and sanction Tamata’s product starting 12 months prior export, before the tree is even lifted from the field. At export time, each tree is physically inspected prior to placement in a shipping container and on arrival DEFRA complete a final inspection prior allowing the trees into the UK.

Gaze Burvill creates the finest outdoor oak furniture for both private gardens and public spaces – with trademark elegant curves, created by specially bending the wood by use of steam. Each Gaze Burvill piece is made for comfort, beauty, lasting quality, and with a commitment to design integrity. The company has worked with many of the large public gardens in this country, and several overseas, to create seating, planters and terrace furniture for visitors, sometimes creating a new bespoke design, like the Border Seat project for the RHS at Wisley, and sometimes working from the established collections, for example some lakeside seating for Hyde Park, or a spiral bench provided for weary shoppers in Petersfield, for the local County Council.

Only certified timber from sustainable sources in Europe is used, and all the oak pieces are made by the company’s craftsmen in the Hampshire workshop. John Cullen Lighting are part of the Steering Committee for the LANDSCAPE show. Lucy Martin, their Design Director talked to us about one of the their recent projects.

She says “The brief from the client was to create an inside/outside party space. Lighting was layered to produce dynamic effects across the split level garden. At high level light skims down the wooden terracing whilst accent lighting is added with spiked 1w LED Kew spotlights and Hampton flood lights to planting and to uplight the olive tree.

At low level 1w Oslo floor washers create a floating effect under the table and benches. To create the party feel, a panel was back lit with colour changing LED RGB Slinky strip which reflects colour throughout the garden. The water rill was lit from under the stone paving with an LED strip adding drama and interesting reflections. Additional colour changing LED strips create the illusion of the water rill extending towards the house and adds more colour and drama close to the house. As a final touch oversized pots were uplight and framed with 1w LED Sienas for a dramatic play on light and shadow.”

Come and listen to Lucy’s colleague, Sally Storey, talk about “Lighting – the forgotten tool in the garden” at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.

Aggregate Industries provided the solution by supplying 1000m2 of Chinese Winter Green paving with a riven finish, which was used within the parkland setting. Additionally another 1600m2 of Chinese Green Sandstone with a sawn and finely textured finish, was supplied which was used around the perimeter of Coworth House and also The Garden Terrace and Formal Gardens.

A further 3000Lm of Granite Kerb was used as a contrast banding against the Green Sandstone Setts at the entrance to Coworth House.

Aggregate Industries are part of the Steering Committee for LANDSCAPE at Battersea Park in September.

Cooking today is a social occasion unlike in earlier times when the cook was shut away in the kitchen for hours and cut off from the guests. Now we want to have a great time with our guests and this will preferably take place outdoors in nice weather. We want to lose as little time as possible and eat together heartily.

The Belgian company indu+ is introducing a completely new cooking experience. Its rolling trolleys mean you can move the kitchen outside in an instant. The induction hobs in the trolleys are modular and can therefore be easily changed and adapted to the menu requirements: cooking, using a wok, grilling, teppanyaki... Outdoor cooking no longer has to mean just a (gas) barbecue. With the indu+ trolleys it has a completely new dimension. The modularity of both the trolleys and the hobs means your outdoor kitchen can be fully personalised. Induction cooking is also advancing irresistibly as this type of cooking is quick, safe and energy efficient. The company uses the trolleys to adapt perfectly to a fluid, flexible lifestyle and the trend in which the boundaries between indoors and outdoors fade away.

Full details of the entire Indu+ range will be available on their stand at LANDSCAPE.

Jennifer Gray designs and makes objects and jewellery in a range of materials, which move in and out of the hand-made, and the digital. Each series is unified, in particular through use of traditional hand carving methods, enhanced by taking advantage of emerging digital technologies. Jennifer sees herself as a link in a chain of makers. She uses what she has learned from the past to blend it with what is available to her today to contribute towards the future. She wants to demonstrate that new technological approaches can blend naturally into a piece of work as a means to build upon what’s gone before.

‘Amphora Garlands’ and ‘Tessellating Wall Tiles’ have been made using digital carving methods developed during her postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Art. She casts the final pieces in reconstituted marble in a mixture of marbled tones, which are then deliberately distressed to give the impression of something more ancient.

These wall tiles can be applied to interior or exterior walls using regular household tile adhesive.

Jennifer will be part of the QEST demonstration area at LANDSCAPE in Battersea Park this September.

A feature at this years LANDSCAPE show will be “Gin Garden”. A travelling, unexpected bar which you will often find across London, popping up in unexpected spaces, mixing and serving drinks.

They work with distilleries, complementing the botanicals of their unique gin with local herbs, fruits and flowers and they source as many ingredients as possible from local artisan producers and small businesses. The drinks are unique to the area they are created in.

The Gin Garden can come to your space and make your location blossom into a decorative scenic background. They can “bring a strip of velvety turf, with a hedge of lilac or red may, or whatever happens to be in season, as a background, one or two cherry trees in blossom, and clumps of heavily-flowered rhododendrons filling in the odd corners; in the foreground you have a blaze of carnations or Shirley poppies, or tiger lilies in full bloom.”

Gin Garden love learning about the botanicals in gin and about the fruit, flowers, herbs and spices that they use to make their drinks. They know lots of other people do too.

So whether you are interested in how to grow chocolate mint, how to mix a drink using preserved plums or the health benefits the ginger in your hot toddy could bring you, one of their team should be able to tell you, and if they don’t - they know someone who does.

Come and visit them for a taste of LANDSCAPE at the show this September.

Andrian Melka is a figurative sculptor working with different materials like marble, stone and bronze. The majority of his works have been commissioned by private clients in Uk and USA on which he has tried to develop and refine his own style. Working directly on the stone block without the need for detailed models make his work more challenging but ultimately more satisfying Andrian says.

In 2008 he was honoured to receive a QEST scholarship to study different methods of working in marble. He spent a month at Franco Cervietti’s workshop in Italy working alongside old marble masters. In 2010 he created a statue of The Medici Venus for Chiswick House gardens collaborating with English Heritage. One of his major involvements were in the project for recreating The Spirit of the Ocean Fountain for Santa Barbara Court House a historical building. Together with a team of 5 other carvers the fountain was finished in 7 months.

Andrian is recognised for his skills in the sympathetic restoration of antique sculptures.

Currently he is working on the restoration of the Grinling Gibbons Memorial of Archbishop Sterne which resides in York Minster and he will be featured on the QEST stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park, London.

Zoë Cull designs and makes functional and ornamental works in natural stone. Following two years’ training in the traditional skills and techniques of architectural masonry and carving, a grant from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust in 2003 enabled her to spend short periods of apprenticeship with five of the country’s leading letter-cutters. She subsequently set up a workshop with partner, Alex Evans, with whom she collaborates under the name Stoneform.

Aided by a Crafts Council Development Award in 2006, Zoë worked to establish a body of creative work, leading to a diverse and interesting variety of private, corporate and public commissions. These include a suite of liturgical furniture for the Church of St Anthony of Padua in Radlett, Herts; a trio of bench seats for Salisbury District Hospital; a large sculptural feature for David Wilson Homes in Bristol and a landscaped space incorporating carved paving and seating at Poole Crematorium, Dorset. She has exhibited widely, including in selected shows at West Dean (‘Art and Memory’), Roche Court (‘Riddles’) and The Garden Gallery.

Recently, Zoë has become interested in using other materials in association with stone, and also in the further integration of her work with its surroundings through the use of hard and soft landscaping. She welcomes all opportunities, no matter how big or small, and will apply herself as dedicatedly to the carving of a simple house name as to the undertaking of a complex and large-scale artwork.

All lighting is carefully selected to ensure full customer satisfaction, with initial product specifications being improved on to provide well made and reliable light fittings. The Roof Gardens in Kensington has long been one of London’s most spectacular and extraordinary landmarks. Originally designed as an escape from London rather than a pedestal above it, The Roof Gardens comprises of three themed gardens spanning across 1.5 acres, a private members Club and Babylon Restaurant all 100ft above Kensington. This summer, The Gardens are celebrating their 75th Anniversary so there is plenty planned throughout the year to help commemorate such a special occasion!

No other location in London offers beautiful rooftop gardens with fully grown oaks and fruit trees, a flowing stream stocked with fish and wildlife and of course the resident flamingos.

The Roof Gardens has also introduced a mini meadow at the far end of the Babylon terrace which was inspired by the wider popular movement towards creating wildflower meadows that is occurring right across the UK.

Sir Richard Branson says “It is fantastic to see The Gardens celebrates its 75th Anniversary this year. Everyone involved with The Roof Gardens should be very proud of what it has achieved; especially David Lewis and his team as the Gardens are a testament to their hard-work; they look absolutely stunning and really do allow visitors to feel like they are worlds away from the hustle and bustle of London.”

Richard Miers has been designing gardens for over 15 years, both in the UK and abroad, including a country garden for a grade 1 listed house in Norfolk, a 15 acre garden for a new build Palladian mansion in Surrey and numerous town gardens in London. Lauded as one of the top ten up and coming garden designers by House and Garden Magazine in February 2011 he was also invited to design a show garden for The Daily Telegraph/House and Garden Fair in 2007. Of which Susan Crewe, Editor of House & Garden, said of ‘The Scented Garden’: ‘An inspired piece of design; so much of the moment, yet with its roots in a thousand years of horticultural history and tradition.’

Despite being rooted in this time-honoured tradition, his gardens are clean and classically contemporary in style, with a strong sense of geometry. When designing, Richard likes to begin by putting structure into the garden, be it with hedges, walls, paths, terraces, water, trained fruit trees or an avenue of trees. These divide the garden into areas of manageable human scale, defining spaces and giving each area a purpose whilst providing shelter, varying points of interest and framed views; they also help hold the garden together through the winter months. This structure is then softened with bulbs, herbaceous flowers, shrubs and roses so that with the advent of spring & summer the excitement of the budding flowers adds a new, altogether softer dimension to the garden.

Richard Miers

If there is a theme that runs through his work it is the curved hedging that winds its way though his herbaceous borders or stands out in sensuous baroque curves against lawn or gravel. Symmetry is also important, coupled with a sense of balance and proportion, resulting in gardens that are both harmonious and handsome. Design ethos: ‘Good garden design is all about teamwork and communication. Translating ideas coherently to both client and contractor is key.’

Richard was chosen to represent the United Kingdom in the 2012 Gardening World Cup in Nagasaki Japan and is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park in September.

One of Addagrips most recent projects has seen them working at Abbotsford House in Scotland, the home of the novelist, playwright and poet Sir Walter Scott. Abbotsford House is currently undergoing a lottery funded restoration to both the internal and external areas of the property.

As part of the overall restoration works, Addagrip approved contractor, The Fraser Bruce Group, carried out the installation of 6mm Rhine Gold Terrabound Resin Bound Surfacing at a depth of 18mm to the courtyard and garden pathways totalling 850m2. It was essential throughout the project that the aesthetics of the system were not compromised and that joints were kept to a minimum.

Andrew Sinclair ARBS is one of this country’s leading figurative sculptors, with an impressive catalogue of work that graces distinguished historical properties and public places such as the Royal Box at Ascot, Epsom Racecourse, and the beautiful Crosby Hall (Sir Thomas Moore’s old palace) in London. His recent success at The Chelsea Flower Show exhibiting a life-size dinosaur sculpture this year was the impetus to take part in the LANDSCAPE Show for the first time.

Andrew’s talent extends across all genres of sculpture, from historic bronze re-creations for public spaces and private commissions, commemorative portraits for museums and industry magnates, to award winning fantasy sculptures such as dinosaurs and dragons. Andrew’s passion is figurative sculpture and his attention to detail, symmetry and design is awe- inspiring, whether he is creating a personal portrait or sculpting a 10ft automaton King Kong! He has produced a spectacular array of bronze sculptures for the Garden of Heroes and Villains owned by Felix Dennis, most recently a life-size creation of Albrecht Durer’s 16th century Rhinocerus woodcut, a sculpture of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian man, plus a life-size Minotaur, as well as the afore mentioned King Kong.

Andrew will be featuring a selection of his work at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park, London, why not come along and talk to him.

Greenleaf are specialists in urban tree pit design. They are the UK market leaders for tree pit products that give trees in towns the best opportunity to thrive. Local authorities, landscape architects, engineers and other related professionals increasingly turn to Greenleaf for guidance and best practice advice in tree planting implementation. At LANDSCAPE this year Greenleaf will be showcasing a variety of these products including their recently relaunched ‘Arborguy’ tree guying system. This patented design, unique to Greenleaf provides fast easy installation. Greenleaf will also be featuring their industry leading StataCell. Built to advanced engineering specifications to support greater vertical loads which brings tree-root systems closer to pavement surfaces. Engineers have calculated that with only 300mm of granular pavement depth, a StrataCell matrix can support maximum pedestrian and pavement traffic loads. With vertical and lateral forces also considered in the engineering make-up of tree pits, StrataCell’s well-designed matrix units lock together well, forming a monolithic framework with excellent modular strength. Make sure you visit Greenleaf to see the StrataCell in action! Visit their stand at LANDSCAPE this September.

More than 25 years ago, when the Rothfuss company introduced spot-welded gabions to the German market they were captivated by the idea of using durable, galvanized screen-mats to build retaining walls out of rock or other natural materials. The large-dimensioned metal baskets, called gabions, facilitate the engineering of firm structures by providing a supporting framework to nature. Playing the role of the pioneer of the industry, Rothfuss continued to research and develop new areas of applications, from facade greening to fencing gabions, by transforming their creative concepts into practical solutions.

Rothfuss, based next to Stuttgart, Germany, is a medium-sized family enterprise manufacturing products out of steel wire, for more than 160 years, and meanwhile servicing many European markets. The company is guided by the spirit of invention, innovation and constant improvement, which is the typical mentality of Southwestern Germany, with Porsche, Mercedes and Bosch as the most prominent representatives of this region.

Hugo Bugg Landscapes is one of the UK’s most celebrated and ambitious new garden design practices. Based in Exeter, we design internationally and domestically with a range of uplifting and modern urban and country gardens as well as public spaces. Our ambitious studio has been appointed design consultants for the Princess of Jordan’s 450 acre Royal Botanic Garden, the first of its kind near the capital of Amman. We are also designing the exciting Tanzanian tropical landscape within the Tropical Glasshouse of the new Museum of Science designed by Renzo Piano in Trento, Italy.

Through our refined aesthetic approach, we are known for creating gardens that exceed the needs and desires of a diverse clientele. Our work has a depth of structure and texture with innovation and juxtaposition serving as key themes of expression. From plants to wood to stone, we eloquently re-imagine uses for traditional materials while exploring possibilities in new materials. Our gardens are inspired by the relationships between the formal and informal and draw inspiration from both the natural and architectural worlds.

Round Wood Trading is set to continue its recent, rapid expansion after acquiring the Pot Company, one of its long-standing suppliers. The provider of Home & Garden Features, has historically specialised in large scale cast iron products, including benches, urns and lamp posts. Over recent years, however, they have become increasingly active in the pot and planter market, with a focus on large scale, quality models well suited to the landscape market.

A significant portion of market share, both trade and retail, has been won in this time through effective pricing and the development of supply chains. Whilst many products have been sourced from a number of international partners, a key relationship was established with the long running ‘Pot Company,’ based just 15 miles away in Lamberhurst, Kent.

As such, when Pot Company owner Kevin McMahon made the decision to retire recently, it seemed a natural fit for the two companies to open a dialogue. Discussions reached a successful and rapid conclusion that has facilitated a seamless and smooth transition.

The Pot Company has been sourcing garden planters from around the world for almost 30 years. This depth of experience has allowed them to develop a unique and varied range featuring consistently popular design themes and materials with proven durability.

A selection of their range will be available to see at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Shade Solutions is Kemp Sail’s fabric and textiles shade sail and garden canopy division. They specialise in designing and manufacturing standard and bespoke garden shade sails, and in particular, working with landscape contractors and outdoor architects, to design, incorporate and implement, contemporary outdoor shaded or sheltered fabric covered areas. These may be in either domestic or commercial settings.

Fabric shelters and shade sails can be a really striking way of creating a useable space and a visually very attractive feature. They have made many retractable and fixed solutions, but as they are essentially temporary structures, yet are subject to the rigours elements of weather, Kemp Sails bring the experience to ensure that the project works practically and exceeds all the expectations.

Kemp Sails can bring assistance to the design process and advise with aspects of shading, shelter, drainage, windage, materials and fixings. We do not generally undertake installations, preferring to assist and support contractors with incorporating the installation into their own program of works, (which keeps the project price controlled and potentially adds another profit centre for the project). They do however maintain alliances with several Approved Installers who can offer an implementation service depending upon budget and location.

Mondi is the name of the founder and owner of their plant nursery, and it’s apt that his name sounds like the Italian for world, “mondo”. This noun could have been a perfect name for their company, which employs people from three different countries.

Mondi began as a local producer/supplier of bamboo in Pistoia,Italy in 2000. In the next two years Mondi began to export a wider range of plants to the French market, and since then it has developed to the point to which we now export the entire Italian outdoor ornamental plant range for clients in Ireland, the UK, France, Switzerland, Albania,Holland, and Jordan.

We recently spoke to Jonathan Denby who shared his thoughts about follies. He told us “I’ve always admired the way Victorians would build a Folly on their land, which had no other purpose than to look good and be admired. One such Victorian was Alexander Brogden, the owner of Holme Island in Grange who, when he had finished building the Furness railway, built a circular Temple of Vesta in his garden. I came across a photo of the temple while I was doing some research on Grange in the Barrow Records Office and was immediately captivated by it. I was told that there was no possible chance of the National Park planners giving me permission to build a modern folly, but, with the thought that the Victorians wouldn’t have been daunted by such a detail, I drew up some plans and put them in. The doubters were wrong and the plans were passed, albeit with the unnecessarily sarcastic comment that it was “more Las Vegas than Lake District”. It has taken several years, but the building is now finished. I think it’s rather lovely. I’ve called it The Rotunda. It isn’t a folly as such but has a practical, and of course commercial purpose as a wedding chapel. A licence has been granted for couples to get married in the chapel, but they can also spend their wedding night there, as it can be magically transformed into a bridal suite. There’s a hidden bed, which comes down from a wall; a secret door to a concealed bathroom and a TV which drops down from the ceiling. You can lie on the bed and look at the stars through the glass domed roof. Perhaps the planners did have a point after all when they mentioned Las Vegas.” Jonathan Denby is one of the featured speakers at this years LANDSCAPE exhibition in Battersea Park this September.

Director Andrew Fisher Tomlin said “we were conscious that it is tough out there and we want our graduates to succeed in their new careers so we decided to offer them a free focussed day’s training to update them on the skills that really matter.” The 2013 Graduate Inspiration Day will inspire new thinking and update professional business skills. As well as the College Directors graduates will benefit from specialist talks on engaging customers through social media and how to create a business that is bigger than just themselves. Fisher Tomlin added “we always want to display the talents and achievements of our students and graduates and this new day is another way in which they get value for the investment that they have made with us. It is vital that our students succeed as it reflects on all we do for them.” In recent years London College of Garden Design students have won more awards in the Society of Garden Designers Awards than any other college and in 2012 and 2013 students have reached the finals of the RHS Young Garden Designer of the Year competition. In an age of franchise driven high streets and off the peg landscape solutions, the local, unique and historic are all too easily lost. Re-establishing a sense of place, history and local identity is a core need for our environments and site specific artworks offer a unique and high quality solution.

From small scale interventions such as QR code paviors to large landmark sculptures Gary Drostle’s work has been re-connecting communities with their environments by enhancing local identity and bringing hidden histories to light.

Award winning London based artist Gary Drostle creates site specific artworks for landscape and architecture. Specialising in wall and floor mosaics and mosaic sculptures Gary’s work brings colour and durability to the environment. His work uses natural stones, hand made Italian glass or tough ceramics to create these beautiful features, each one designed uniquely to reflect the character of the area. With over twenty-five years experience Gary has built an international reputation for his mosaic art and can create works in both traditional and modern styles, always with a strong emphasis on design. Developing ideas in collaboration with architects, landscape designers, local communities and local authorities Gary’s work can be seen in parks, town centres and public buildings across the UK and in the USA.

Gary will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September as part of the QEST demonstration area.
