What Else Check Valves Do

• While many people don’t think about keeping dirty water from migrating back into the sprinklers and laterals,

• It is a major cause of sprinklers sticking-up due to grit, damaged riser stems, and no rotation

• This protective feature is also in Techline® CV!

“Normally Open” Vs. “Normally Closed” Drippers• Until now, dripperline drippers have been “normally

open”. That means:– Water could flow out of the dripperline on zone shut-down,

causing water waste and low drainage problems,– Water pressure in the soil (saturated or over-saturated soil)

could force silt and clay-laden water (and debris) into the dripperline,

– Long laterals could take additional time to “recharge” on turn-on as the tubing refilled with water, and

– Air/vacuum relief valves were required

“Normally Closed” Drippers

• Techline® CV uses a “normally closed” dripper. That means:– The dripper “shuts itself off” on zone shutdown– The diaphragm seals against the inlet hole of the dripper– This action:

• Keeps water in the dripperline from leaking out,

• Keeps outside water from entering via suction,

• Eliminates low area drainage issues,

• Zones, even with long laterals, and/or slopes, all begin operating at the same time, and

• No air/vacuum relief valves are required

How Much Water Can You Save?• Every foot of Techline® CV holds 0.0133 gallons of water,

therefore,• Every 100’ holds 1.33 gallons• To calculate actual water savings:

– Multiply how many 100’s of feet of Techline CV you have on the project x 1.33 gallons

– This will be the total amount of water not draining out on each irrigation. Then,

– Multiply the gallonage above x the number of irrigation cycles annually

• These features make Techline® CV superior to any other product available

Keeping Roots Out

• As long as soil moisture is adequate:– There is no threat of root intrusion

– This is easily accomplished by daily or every other day irrigation

• The Techline® CV “physical root barrier” has several unique features:– The water exits the dripper from one location, and exits the tubing from

another,

– Unlike other products, there is NOT an open passageway into the dripper through the tubing hole,

– The raised exit hole is yet another very effective barrier for roots, and

– Techline CV drippers “shut off” after operation, sealing the dripper so they aren’t a target for roots. (Can be caused by overwetting the soil surrounding the dripper outlet)

Techline® CV - What Changes?• Dripper operating range:

– Techline CV drippers operate from 14.7 psi - 70 psi (Techline is 7 - 70 psi)

– The CV dripper doesn’t open until line pressure is 14.7 psi

– All drippers shut-off at 2 psi

– That equates to a 4.62’ check valve feature (20.433 = 4.62’)

– Because Techline CV has a higher opening pressure, the recommended minimum opening pressure is 20 psi

– When zones on slopes have an elevation change of more than 4½’, integrate the inline Techline Check Valve (TLCV)

• TLCV is installed in-line like any other fitting

• It have an opening pressure of 7.1 psi (4m)

• It has a closing pressure of 5.7 psi (5m) (13’ of elevation change)

• Flow range: 0.9 - 4.4 GPM (200 - 1,000l/h)

Techline® CV - What Changes?• System components:

– No automatic flush valve is needed:• Why?

– While flush valves purge debris out of the dripperline,

– They may also allow water to drain out after zone shut-down

• “What should I do?”– Because consideration for maintenance and winterizing is still

important,

– A TLSOV or FIG8 line end should be installed at the point farthest away from the source

– Either of these will allow manual flushing, and a good winterizing port, but will not allow water to drain from the line during the irrigation season

– No Air/Vacuum Relief Valve (A/VRV) is required:• Relief valves allow air out of dripperline when the zone is

activated, and

• Allow air into the dripperline after shutdown

• They typically work in conjunction with a line flushing valve

• In Techline CV, water is kept in the tubing after zone shut-down (up to a 4½’ column)

• As such, there is no reason to install an air/vacuum relief valve(s) or the valve box(es) they would go in

• This makes installations faster, easier, and less expensive

• On heavy clay or clay-loam, the USDA recommends a maximum precipitation rate of 0.20” per hour on a covered 0 - 5% slope
