Landscapes of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, & Oman
Program OverviewExplore Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs with its mysterious history, the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), and Oman, ancient lands with Southwest Asia’s most modern & vibrant cities: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, & Muscat. This course will ignite students’ interest in the rich culture of the Middle East, a land of Old World ideas & modern, eclectic pizazz! Students will delve into cultures that differ from those of the U.S., yet have surprising similarities subtly woven into the fabric of the region’s daily life. Through the use of GeoSpatial Technologies, students will gain deeper insight into the physiographic characteristics, climate, and environmental problems & solutions of the region.

Students are eligible to apply for this program if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Students must be 18 years of age• Any degree-seeking student, undergraduate (including
freshmen) or graduate level• Good judicial standing• 2.50+ GPA at time of application• All students must enroll in the GGY 480 or GEO 592

In GGY 480-001 or GEO 592 students will earn 4 UNCW credits: 3 for the Fall ’18 course, which is preparatory for the trip, and 1 credit for the winter trip, both mandatory. The class begins in August with an on-campus geographic exploration of Egypt and The U.A.E., to include assigned readings, study guides, and presentations by the professors. The on-campus portion has two parts: the introduction to the region with Dr. Hines and the geospatial exploration of the region with Dr. Ghoneim. The final on-campus portion requires individual projects, the topics

of which will be selected by each student, for a documented presentation to the class at the end of the Fall semester. Upon conclusion of the on-campus course, we will travel abroad for continued hands-on exploration.

Cairo, Egypt; Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Umm al-Quwain, and Al-Ain, UAE; and Muscat, OmanAfter 3 nights in Cairo, we fly to Dubai, from where we will take the short drives to Umm al-Quwain Nature Preserve & Abu Dhabi, then on to the Al-Ain University’s Desert facility for guided tours & to meet and work with Al-Ain Geography & GIS faculty & students. Next we will travel to Muscat for two days & nights in Oman’s museums, souks, and ports. From Muscat, we return to JFK. Accommodations will include hotels and/or apartments where the group will always be lodged together with the Professors. All land transport will be in modern vans with professional drivers.
Locations
Three nights in Cairo with outings to the Pyramids & Sphinx at Giza, Cairo Museum, historic Islamic sites (Al-Qalaa Fort & Al-Muizz Street), the Souk (Khan el-Khalili), & a Nile dinner cruise. Six nights in the U.A.E. include outings to Abu Dhabi & the Umm al-Quwain Nature Preserve with a guided Ecology tour, New Year’s Eve in Dubai, & two days & nights in the desert campus of Al-Ain University. The trip concludes with 2 nights in Muscat, returning to JFK from there. Prior to the program, students will visit the Qaboos Center in Washington D.C. over fall break (Oct. 11-13, 2018).
