CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

Sir Gil Simpson, KNZM, QSM, D.Sc (honoris causa) Chief Executive Officer, Jolly Good Software

Sir Gil was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1948 and at age 18 began his career as a computer programmer. In 1969 he wrote the initial direct debit and direct credit applications which are in common use throughout the New Zealand banking industry today, and by age 22 he was Head of Computer Programming at the Comalco aluminium smelter in Bluff, which at that time was the largest industrial project ever undertaken in New Zealand.

He lived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, working as a programmer for Caterpillar Inc. between 1976 and 1978, after which he returned to New Zealand to develop a new concept in computer programming through his creation of the fourth generation language known as LINC. Distributed by Unisys Corporation, LINC was adopted by more than 4,000 organisations globally, generating billions of dollars in revenue for Unisys. It is still sold today and remains New Zealand’s most successful software export to date.

In 2000 Sir Gil was chosen to receive the New Zealand Computer Society’s Supreme Award for the most outstanding contribution to computing in New Zealand in the 20th century. That same year he was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the computer industry and the broader community, and in 2003 he received an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Canterbury. He was President of the Royal Society of New Zealand 2000-2003. Sir Gil was inaugurated into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame in 2005, an honour reserved for business leaders responsible for outstanding contributions to the nation. In 2008 Sir Gil received an NZX Flying Kiwi Award and joined the PricewaterhouseCoopers NZ Hi-Tech Hall of Fame.

Gilbert EnokaGilbert Enoka is a matter of fact high achiever who has worked alongside and inside some of New Zealand’s most elite sporting campaigns. He thrives on assisting individuals with ‘performing under pressure’ and has compiled an impressive list of international successes. His stable includes a smorgasbord of NZ’s sporting elite – All Blacks, Black Caps, Silver Ferns and Canterbury Crusaders. He is fresh off championing Back to Back rugby world cup victories – a feat many pundits thought was unattainable.

His work across the high performance landscape has been recently acknowledged with him being awarded a 2016 New Year’s Honour – Officer of the New Zealand Order of merit for services to rugby and sport psychology.

Sit back, buckle up and enjoy Gilbert’s reflections as he shares with us his latest success.

Joanne Aquilina, LNA ACT NSW

Joanne Aquilina is the CEO of the LNA Master Landscapers Association, NSW and ACT in Australia. The LNA was formed in 1979 with the aim of raising the public perception of the landscape industry via increased quality in landscape construction works. Since that time it has grown to be the peak industry body in NSW and the ACT and represents hundreds of landscaping businesses in the region.

Joanne brings to the conference a wealth of experience in the landscaping industry and conference participants will find that many of the challenges, issues and industry advances faced in Australia are very similar to those of New Zealand landscapers, businesses and organisations. Joanne’s contribution to the conference offers a unique opportunity to share information between our two countries. The LNA is deeply committed to increasing green infrastructure and biodiversity in Australian cities and urban environments and Joanne works tirelessly as an advocate for this cause with all levels of government and other organisations associated with the landscaping industry.

Olivia Kwarda Tuivaga, Houzz Australia and New Zealand

Olivia is the Events Coordinator and lead for the Industry Marketing Team at Houzz.co.nz - the world’s largest online community for architecture, home design and renovation.

She is a Graduate Architect of the University of Sydney and an Interior Designer, with a background in event marketing and fashion. Olivia started at Houzz shortly after its launch in Australia in 2014. Since then she has grown the regional events schedule for Houzz across Australia and New Zealand - hosting exclusive events for industry professionals, delivering access to unique data, insights and marketing knowledge.
