Grandparents Day

Thank you to everyone who attended Grandparents Day on Monday. It was a lovely day and the children

enjoyed showing their visitors around!

Important Information - Planning for 2020

The start of each school year can be run more efficiently for students, parents and teachers if the school

knows how many students will be returning in the new year. This is of particular importance for 2020 as

the school is extremely close to increasing to a 25th class. As a school, we need to notify the Department of

Education ASAP if we will require an additional classroom teacher and demountable. Parents who are

planning on withdrawing their child/ren from Lane Cove West PS at the end of the 2019 year, can you

please advise the school office ASAP so we can confirm student numbers for 2020.

Class Placement Requests 2020

Term 4 is a very busy time, especially for the staff at our school with ongoing teaching and learning and

assessments a high priority, as well as the time and personal effort that goes into writing the Semester 2

reports and forming classes for 2020. Both the writing of reports and formation of classes is well under

way. As a result, parent requests for 2020 were asked to be sent in to the school by the end of last term.

Please be aware that any parent requests provided to the school after this Friday 18 October will not be

able to be considered. If you would like to discuss your child’s class placement personally, please make an

appointment to see Mr Thomson or Mrs Weston through the school office or school email.

Information for Kindergarten 2020

The Department of Education has made some changes regarding enrolment processes and acceptable

forms of proof of address. At the end of the newsletter is important information regarding these

changes.

If you have a child who will be commencing school next year, please come to the office to collect an

enrolment package or download an enrolment application form from the school website to ensure you

receive all relevant information. There are a number of current families that have not yet completed all of

the paper work for next year. We ask for your cooperation in finalising this as soon as possible.

Volunteer Thank you Morning Tea

If you have volunteered at the school in the classroom, at

events, carnivals, or uniform shop, just to name a few; the

staff will be putting on a morning tea to thank you.

Save The Date – Online Guardians

Online Guardians are experts in the field of Social Networks and Adolescent Development. They have been

booked to do a staff presentation and parent presentation on the ever changing online world. There is

further information in this newsletter on what will be addressed in the parent session.

Time: 6.30-8.00pm Venue: School Hall

Next year, we will ask parents to RSVP so we know how many will be attending and will provide some

sandwiches and tea/coffee.

School Grounds - Update

Sensory Garden

Urban Landscapes have been engaged to manage the Sensory Garden STEM project that our current Year 6

students designed last year. We hope to set up a meeting time shortly for Urban Landscapes to meet with

Year 6, go through their design ideas and work collaboratively in ensuring the Sensory Garden that will be

built truly reflects the student’s ideas and designs.

Sandpit - Update

Urban Lasndscapes have also been engaged to redesign the sandpit area which is in much needed repair and

upgrade. We envision that Urban Landscapes will collaborate with Year 3-6 SRC to redesign the sandpit area.

STEM Classroom - Update

Asset Management have been in contact regarding the STEM Classroom build. I have met with the architect

and Asset Management and have provided all the suggestions the students, teachers and parents have put

forward to consider when designing the STEM Classroom. The architect will now come up with two concept

designs and once these designs are available to our school, further feedback/suggestions will be sought

from the community. It is very exciting to see this community project start to come together!

New additions to the Bush Tucker Garden

As part of their ‘Food and Fibre’ unit, Stage 3 students are

studying the sustainable management of plants in the

Australian environment, and helped to plant some new

additions to our bush tucker garden last week, including

lemon myrtle, saltbush, Davidson’s plum, finger lime,

aniseed and native spinach and herbs. At the end of the

unit, students will be harvesting some of our school’s

flourishing natural resources to sell at Lane Cove West

Public School’s inaugural Green Christmas Markets, to be

held after school on Tuesday 3 December from 3:15pm –

5:30pm.

Student Attendance

While the attendance of students at Lane Cove West Public School is generally positive, it is timely to remind

parents of their responsibilities regarding absences. In addition, we will be implementing a few additional

procedures starting this term to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students.

Late Arrivals

Many students are arriving to school after 9:25am without a parent. Late arrivals require a late slip from the

office. I understand that parking can be difficult, however parents will need to accompany their child to the

office to sign them in. If this does not occur, parents will be sent home a note to provide an explanation. This

will need to be returned to the class teacher.

Unexplained Absences

Parents are required to provide, an explanation, within 7 days. This can be in the form of an email, hand

written note, phone call or verbal notification to the class teacher.

To support parents who may forget to provide an explanation, an automatic notification system will be set up

to send a reminder email the day after an unexplained absence. This will be sent to the family ‘preferred’

email address only. If absences are still not explained, the class teacher will make further contact with

parents.

Daily Absences

As an added measure to ensure student safety, we will also be implementing an automatic notification to

parents the morning of an absence. This notification will be set for 10:30am and sent to those with an

‘unexplained absence’ (please note that class teachers may not update explanations until later in the day, so

even if you have provided an explanation that morning, the system may not yet reflect this). Although this is

not a Department requirement, it will ensure that parents are notified if their child is not at school. In the

unlikely event that a child should be in attendance, parents are encouraged to contact the school in the first

instance.

Transition to School - Kindergarten

We held our first Kindergarten Orientation Session today. The children all settled very well and enjoyed their

time in big school. We would like to extend a warm welcome in particular to all our new families that have

joined the Lane Cove West community.

Well done Millie!

Congratulations to Millie G from year 6 for receiving the Fred Hollows Humanity Award along with other

Stage 3 students from across New South Wales. The Award recognises Year 6 students who follow in

Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community. It celebrates students who show

compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, just as Fred did. Millie has been recognised as

demonstrating these values in her everyday dealings with others and especially in her work alongside

teachers, her peers and younger students this year. Well done Millie!

Student medical and contact details

Today all K-2 students will be receiving a large yellow envelope containing their current medical

information and contact details. Please read the enclosed letter carefully and make any necessary updates.

All documents then need to be returned to the school before 15 November even if there

are no changes.

Students in years 3-5 will receive their envelopes next week.

WriteOn Competition: LCWPS Entries

WriteOn is an annual writing competition open to all NSW primary students in Years 1 to 6. The

competition provides students with the opportunity to become published authors with winning entries from

the competition being published in a Best of WriteOn anthology. Below are some outstanding pieces of work

submitted by our students. They should be congratulated for crafting such interesting and creative

responses to the stimulus.

Ora’s Hat Collection– By Evelyn

Saturday 13th of January

Dear Diary,

Today Willow came over to my house. Willow is my best friend, she has dark brown hair and green eyes. I

have blonde hair and brown eyes. We played with my magic hat collection. My hats can transport the

wearer to the world of that specific hat when you put them on. Today we tried on my top hats, which took

us to Victorian times. Our hats and dresses were covered in frills and feathers and lace, they were terrible!

We laughed and snorted, I guessed it was improper for girls in that time to do that. We danced through the

murky puddles, catching eyes from people walking by.

Then Willow rubbed her hands on the grimy cobble road and smeared dirt on her dress. We threw our hats

on to a spiky metal fence, then climbed up and got them down. “Hey!” yelled a man at the bottom, “Get

off my bleeding fence!” We then took our hats off, and were back in my cramped bedroom, standing in the

pile off hats. I looked down in horror to see that our hats were ripped, Willow noticed too, “Oh gosh! I’m

so sorry Ora, they must have ripped when we threw them on the fence” she had said. “We can never go

back” I said, defeated, an amazing idea popped into my head. I ran into mums’ study and took out a roll of

black thread and a needle. I sat down on my bed and started stitching. I tried one on, but nothing worked. I

sighed loudly. Just then, a bright white light enveloped both top hats, we both shielded out eyes, then it

stopped and THEY WERE FIXED!! I was SO happy.

So that’s what I did today, I’m really happy that the top hats were fixed.

A Time Traveller’s Adventure Summer looked at all the hats. Which one should she choose for her adventure? The engines of the machine

whirred to life. Summer was in the quaint living room of her house. Except it wasn’t so quaint, because

there was a giant time machine with all these wires sticking out.

Summer looked at the Timing of the Hat Machine she had invented. All you needed to do was insert a hat

from a time era in a small compartment on the right. It would scan for radioactivity and find the time. Then

with a flip of a switch, you would hop inside. It transported you to where the hat came from. To go back,

you have to go to where you arrived. The machine would take you back by scanning your DNA and checking

radioactivity. You then travel back.

Summer looked at her reflection in the glossy surface. Her shoulder-length ginger hair lay on her shoulders

and her warm smile lit up the room. She was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. Her grey eyes twinkled

with more wisdom than an average 23 year-old as she picked up the pharaoh’s crown from a nearby table

piled with hats from different eras.

She inserted the hat into a compartment and locked it with a key. She put the key in her pocket and flipped

a lever. She hurried into the time machine and closed the sliding door. She waited for a moment and then it

felt bumpy. There was a giant CRUNCH and the rocking stopped.

She had arrived in Ancient Egypt. Summer stepped out of the time machine. It was a cloudless scorching hot

day in Egypt. The only shade was from the giant pyramids, looming over the tiny people of Egypt. Summer

took a closer look at what looked like the Great Pyramid of Giza. It was only partially constructed. ‘How

strange,’ Summer thought. Then she remembered that she was in Ancient Egypt.

Suddenly a man appeared behind her. He looked like he was about forty and wore a Pharaoh’s clothing. He

was draped in gold and silver and had a funny goatee. It was the Pharaoh Khufu. He said something in

another language that was probably something to show amazement, given the dumbfounded look on his

face.

“Hello.” Summer replied to whatever he said. He said something that sounded familiar. “Isis.” He said, with

more or less amazement. Summer thought for a moment. Ohhhh…. He thinks I’m the Egyptian goddess Isis!

She thought.

Suddenly, two men grabbed Summer. They shoved her onto a podium. Sacrifice? She thought. A man

wearing only linen pants held a weird rope. He wrapped it around Summer and left it loose. Weird… thought

Summer. “Isis! Isis! Isis!” They chanted. Then something glowed. Summer was suddenly back where she

started. Back in her living room in the present. Summer looked at all the hats. Which one should she choose

for her adventure?

Grandparents Day:

Thank you to everyone who donated cakes/slices and fruit. This support of the band is very much

appreciated. Huge thanks to Sarah and James who coordinated the BBQ and Cake Stall on the day with

thanks also to the parents, teachers and year 6 students who helped to serve hundreds of sausage

sandwiches, cakes and cups of tea in a short time frame.

Money raised will be used towards purchasing additional instruments to provide all interested students with

the opportunity to be part of a concert band.

Solo Challenge:

All band students are encouraged to choose a fun piece of music and start practicing for their Solo Challenge.

These will be performed in band rehearsal during week 9.

Students should choose their own piece of music to play as a solo.

Ask your tutor for help.

Search online or in music shops for a piece arranged for your instrument

Percussion may use a backing tape. Accompaniment is not required for other instruments

Timing: 60 sec for junior band; 90-120 sec for Senior/Concert Band

Students who participate gain a sense of accomplishment and will also receive an award.

Return of Band Hire Instruments:

All instruments hired through the school band need to be returned following the Solo Challenge in week 9.

Please advise your tutor you will not be available for a lesson in the final week of school.

Joining Band in 2020:

If your child is currently in year 2, a try-out session will be held in Term 4. This provides the opportunity for

the students to see, hear and blow some of the concert band instruments.

Students currently in Year 3-5 are welcome to join the band program next year. No previous experience

Chess Club

Chess Club is open to students from Year 1 and operates Mondays 3.30pm-4.30pm in the Year 5 Classrooms.

Children enrolled in OOSH can still attend and will be escorted to OOSH at the end of class. Run by the Sydney

Academy of Chess, the club caters for beginners to advanced players and offers the opportunity to participate

in friendly interschool tournaments during the year.

Get involved in the School Banking program

You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

The Online Guardians are a new business who are experts in the field of Social Networks and

Adolescent Development.

They have presented to over 400,000 people over the past decade and have a wealth of

hands-on experience working with schools and young people in the ever-changing online

world.

A session with the Online Guardians will assist parents and carers to understand the current

challenges faced by young people, whilst providing effective strategies and tools to assist

guide their children through the complexities of social networks and the online world.

may very well turn out to be the most important parenting seminar you will ever get

involved in.

Does your child become very afraid of certain situations or objects, worry about a lot of things, get very distressed, or try to avoid things they fear?

About the studyOur team at Griffith University may be able to assist you. We are conducting a nationwide study that includes the following services at no cost to families:

• A thorough assessment of your child’s anxiety with a trained psychologist via the telephone;

• Your child receiving one of two kinds of home-based treatments delivered on a PC, laptop or tablet; and

• Two follow-up telephone assessments with a trained psychologist 6- and 12-months after treatment to track your child’s progress.

The study aims to find out if these two treatments are as effective as each other, and which children have the best response to each kind of treatment. This will mean that there are more evidence-based treatments available for helping anxious children.

About the treatmentsEach treatment involves your child completing treatment sessions at home on a PC, laptop or tablet.

Each treatment involves your child learning practical strategies to better manage anxiety.

• One treatment helps children learn to control the focus of their attention on helpful things around them.

• The other treatment helps children learn to think differently and approach things they fear.

Each treatment includes information, telephone or email support for parents in assisting their child to better manage anxiety.

Prior studies have shown that children who complete each treatment experience significant reductions in anxiety.
