The CommuniTy of Langa

Langa is the first Black Township, established in 1923, and named after Chief Langalibalele. Owing its for-mation to the deep political division of South Africa, Langa played a pivotal role in the emancipation of African people with a very rich history. A communitythat has produced many talented icons, Langa has triumphed through lots of trials and tribulations.

The community of Langa is friendly, warm and wel-coming. This is seen through the tourism activities that started as walking tours in Langa, and evolvedto the establishment of Bed & Breakfasts and Ho-mestays. We have many tourist attractions which will allow a visitor to learn more about Langa, such as Guga S‘thebe, Dompass Court Museum, the re-sistance campaign and others.courtesy of Nomtha Dilima

WhaT is open sTreeTs?

‘Open Streets’ is a worldwide movement of citizens who are reclaiming their streets as public space. During an ‘Open Streets Day’, streets are closed off to motorised transport to create a platform for community building and healthy recreational activity. Rather than being an event, Open Streets is simply a day to reimagine public life and use our streets differently. Open Streets Cape Town is a non-profit organisation working to create sha-red spaces that embody respect for everyone and help bridge the spatial and social divides of our city.www.openstreets.org.za

WhaT is red BuLL amaphiko?

Red Bull Amaphiko is a programme to support social entrepreneurs who are using their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to make a difference in their communities. It also aims to inspire a broader audience of young people to do the same. The Red Bull Amaphiko Academy took place at the new Guga S’Thebe theatre in Langa from 30 October to 8 November 2015, where a group of social innovators from all over South Africa collaborated with leading international and local experts to take their skills and projects to the next level.
